    Hey Roger, it is amazing. I just cant wait to have one of these. I really loved the board, the keys/pads, how the notes are disposed, like a horizontal harpejji, but much better... of course... but i think it could have a touchscreen where we could visualize and navigate better through all its functions.

    • @rogerlinndesign
      @rogerlinndesign  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If you consider it a desktop workstation, then a touchscreen would certainly be appropriate. But if you consider as a musical instrument , then I feel that a touchscreen is less less appropriate, especially if you play it standing. For example, I don’t think it is appropriate to add a touchscreen to a guitar, cello or saxophone. If you agree, then it is appropriate to ask what can’t you do easily with the current UI. If you read the Panel Settings page on my site, you may find that its very easy to use and understand and as a musical instrument, you may find yourself spending all your time playing music and not adjusting settings.

    Thx Roger, I love this demo compilation! Such an interesting controller... so much expression... I bet it could be used for many more things than music. I guess there is an SDK and drivers for Win/Mac/Ux? Sorry to ask, but just being honest: Why is it still so unknown (even among musicians)... Marketing? If more people knew about it and became interested, maybe the price could come down? I know there needs to be a compensation for the idea/R&D, but the materials don't seem that expensive, am I wrong?... and it probably could be mass-produced with proper demand.

    • @rogerlinndesign
      @rogerlinndesign  ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Thanks for your kind words. Answers:
      1) Other uses than music: Perhaps, but I'm not aware of any other application that requires precise sensing of 3 continuous dimensions, independently for each of multiple simultaneous touches.
      2) SDK/drivers for Win/Mac/Linux: LinnStrument is USB class-compliant so it uses no custom drivers but rather uses Win/Mac/Linux built-in drivers. And for this reason, there's no need for an SDK. However, it has extensive MIDI communication, a special User Firmware Mode, and 100% of the software is open source. To learn more, see the LinnStrument Support page at rogerlinndesign.com and see the links under "Developers".
      3) Not well known / too expensive: LinnStrument actually is fairly well known given that there are over 4100 LinnStrument owners in the world. The problem is that most musicians are happy playing music with the on/off switches of their MIDI piano keyboards or drum machines and see no need for expressive touch control. There aren't that many people in the world who think out of the box. Regarding price, perhaps you'd prefer to pay $6510 for a full--size Continuum or $4910 for the small Continuum model. Regarding marketing, Roli has spent lots of money on marketing, yet they're selling their 4-octave Seaboard Rise 2 for $1399, $300 more than my 4-octave LinnStrument 128 model. The truth is that though you may not think that the materials are expensive, they are. These are all fine professional expressive musical instruments and it is expensive to make an instrument that senses 3 continuous dimensions for each of simultaneous touches, at high precision and low latency on a large playing surface. Not to mention a quality musical instrument made from steel, aluminum and wood, with a quality padded case, instead of the common cheap plastic products that often masquerade as musical instruments. Would it be less expensive if more people bought it? Yes, that's the nature of economies of scale. But until people see beyond the limitations of playing music with on/off switches, I'm content to focus on making a quality professional musical instrument, which earns me less than most silicon valley engineers but enough to sustain my tiny one-person company and my outsourced manufacturing. And because I never take investment or go into debt, you can take comfort in knowing that I'll stay in business year after year, so LinnStruments and replacement parts will always be available. To quote E. F. Schumacher, "Small is Beautiful".

    • @matrixview
      @matrixview ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rogerlinndesign Thanx Roger for your extensive answer! I've looked at all 3 (plus GeoShred software). Haken (indeed very expensive) SEEMS to have the most "organic" touch, but I don't really like the layout and size (same with Roli, which software does have some pretty good default sounds, although I hope to see more MPE VST plugins in general over time). I come from guitar so your Linnstrument's layout, efficiency, size and multi-colored lighting make it better (or more suitable) in my view... And also its possible other uses (besides music)... maybe: coding/AI/automation/etc...which seems much better on a more general raster/matrix layout. I saw a video where someone made a silicon-touch-overlay for the linnstrument, but I have no clue if it makes it more playable or feel more organic. I really don't know... just my initial thoughts. I hope you didn't view my questions as criticism... I really love what you did for music and controllers. And yeah, having a small company does have some great benefits, also for the customers. I can't really think of an inventor that answers all his customers personally. So, cheers to you!

    • @rogerlinndesign
      @rogerlinndesign  ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@matrixview One problem that I occasionally encounter is that because LinnStrument bears a vague resemblance to one of the many cheap arrays of lit on/off switches, people sometimes assume it should be priced similarly. So I must explain the difference between a cheap on/off switch clip launcher and a fine musical instrument that senses 3 continuous dimensions of touch, polyphonically, with high touch sensitivity and location precision, low latency, and on a large playing surface, which is a very difficult engineering task and expensive to both design and manufacture. I find that those who question the price are often clip launchers who merely want to occasionally wiggle their fingers and see what happens, whereas LinnStrument owners approach it from a different point of view: they value it as a fine musical instrument that allows them to bring the expression of fine acoustic musical instruments to the world of electronic sound, and compare its price not to cheap clip launchers but rather to fine acoustic instruments, for which people often pay multiple thousands of dollars.
      Regarding the video you saw for the alternate playing surface called "Speedbumpy", this was made by a LinnStrument owner who had an idea that if the rows had a gentle curve, it would be easier to feel them and therefore reduce dependence on the lights. I wanted to help him explore his idea so I gave him not only my 3D engineering files for LinnStrument's playing surface to work from, but also offered to introduce him to the company that fabricates my playing surfaces and consent to let him use all of my material formulas if he chooses to go into production.

    • @rogerlinndesign
      @rogerlinndesign  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The problem with USB-C is that it’s too fragile and would too easily break if someone tripped over the cable, especially when playing LinnStrument standing up. It’s the same reason that guitar manufacturers never switched to the far more popular 1/8” audio jacks.

    @brendenirwin1237 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Roger, what daw is linnstrument most compatible with?

    • @rogerlinndesign
      @rogerlinndesign  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      LinnStrument sends standard MIDI, so it works with every MIDI synth or DAW in existence. If you want to use LinnStrument’s MPE capabilities, then you’ll need a DAW that sends all 16 MIDI channels to the track, because MPE uses a different MIDI channel for each touch. If you’re looking for a DAW with built-in synths that take full advantage of MPE and LinnStrument’s touch expression, then Logic is an excellent choice because it sends all 16 channels to the track, it’s internal synths are all MPE-compatible, and I offer a free file of LinnStrument-optimized sounds for Logic. If you’re not on Mac, then Ableton Live works and is popular, though only a few of its internal synths are MPE compatible. If you like Live’s look and feel, Bitwig is also an excellent DAW because it is MPE compatible and I include a free license for Bitwig 8-Track with every LinnStrument purchase.

    • @rogerlinndesign
      @rogerlinndesign  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Please note that this is not a forum for 40 year old products, but rather a video about a new instrument that represents the future and not the past as drum machines do. If you watch the video, you may actually discover this.

    • @rogerlinndesign
      @rogerlinndesign  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@larrytan73The Akai Force is nothing like LinnStrument. Force is yet another pad matrix / clip launch controller with the minor addition of sensing pressure. Akai didn’t copy LinnStrument but is attempting to offer an alternative to Ableton Push. If you take a moment to learn what LinnStrument is, you’ll realize that it is not yet another drum pad controller or clip launcher. Rather, it is a new musical instrument that senses pressure, left/right finger movement (for pitch control) and front/back finger movement, and does this polyphonically and independently for all simulataneous touches. That’s 3 dimensions, not 1 like Push or Force, and fully polyphonic. Otherwise stated, it brings the subtle expressive control of fine acoustic instruments to electronic sound. Music is more than just making beats or playing someone else’s premade clips. The tragedy for beatmakers is that LinnStrument also tremendously expands their musical palette, but few have the vision to see that this is the future. The 4300 people who play LinnStrument do.
