- Making walls and building bridges from scratch can be a lot of fun, this was no exception. For the layout we needed to avoid wasting space.
This model railway layout has been fun so far and I hope you have enjoyed the journey building the shunting layout

Great video. Now I know how to weather a brick wall, which was previously a total mystery to me. Really enjoying this series as it is teaching me a lot in bite size chunks!

What I use for mortar in embossed brickwork is very fine ready mixed polyfilla. Once the paints all dry, I just rub it in with my finger, and it fills in the mortar lines lovely, is a good natural colour, and once all excess is wiped off with a damp cloth, it dulls down and blends in brickwork. Give it a go on a spare bit of brickwork when you get the chance

I love how everything is a bit of a tight squeeze for the locos! It gives it that old Victorian sans health and safety feel. Great work as always Tris… loving all of this 🎉
If you're chasing a bit of realistic design, your tank bund walls can actually be much lower than that. I have a simple spreadsheet calculation if you're interested. Also one detail you might have want to add is a fill point for the tanks (usually a camlock fitting with an isolation valve, where someone can hook up a hose to over the bund wall). Also there's usually a set of stairs to get over the bund wall, if its too high to just step over.
Great work Tris. The way you just mellifluously narrate your way along, it's just so personable.
But why oh why with your dobbing do you use a paintbrush? The cheap and cheerful art sponges leave a very natural texture and are very nice to use. I'm guessing the sponge technique just doesn't work for you? The magnificent builds of the frightfully expensive bar mills, Campbell, or master creations wood kits by the likes of asd asx are mindblowing, and he'll use a brush, but generally just as another painting tool.

Think its already been mentioned about the bund walls being lower. The ball park figure is 1 - 1.5m high or 110% of the capacity in the biggest tank if you wanted to work it out for realism.

Thanks for sharing the retaining walls and girder bridge as I’ve purchased both items to put on my OO9 project and was struggling on the best way todo it. Now I know how to. One thing you could add it a girder on the under side of the bridge that will change the look of the comparison of the road level. Thanks and have a happy New Year

Enjoying the build. I believe the word you are looking for with the wall around the fuel tanks is bund. An idea for that is to inset the tanks into the board a little with steps down for general access (as how do your miniature people get in ATM?) and if there is a spill, fuel is contained within the area

Coming along nicely, but you will need a door or a gate in the oil tank wall for personnel to get in.
Yep. I've seen some where there are steps going up with a gate. I guess it's raised to contain any spills within the walls if something goes wrong.

Great video and I am looking forward to seeing more in 2024. I suggest you add a footway alongside the bridge beam and parapet to raise the level and give an illusion of depth for the bridge deck. This will level a little triangle of carriageway where the car can be parked. Some 'concrete' coping stones on top of the oil tank bund would set it off. Keep up the excellent modelling.

I’m going back to 2007 & I used to watch an elderly gentleman who built shunting layouts they were built out of 8x4 plywood and were 8’ long & 2’ wide I’m thinking that they were based or built around the Scottish Network they were absolutely beautiful layouts I believe one had a Cement warehouse at one end & a small station at the other
The loco’s would appear from under a bridge they would run up to the siding by the station then an 08 would be despatched to collect the wagons & take them to the cement works via a head shunt I believe he built 3 layouts all the same just different time spans & the point work was controlled by coat hanger wire & springs
And then he & his layouts disappeared & I don’t know why it was such a shame as they were beautiful modelled layouts which gave hours of viewing pleasure
It wasn’t Deresley David. Hydes layout that was another fantastic end to end before he ripped it up & it’s not Dibs Yard I think Jenny Kirk built a puzzle layout too

Tris, raise the height of the road by adding layers of 5mm foam board to the height required.
Great video, love the brickwork. It may be my perspective but it looks like the wall round the oil tanks blocks off access to the back two stand pipes for connecting hoses, also the wall does look rather high for the workmen to climb over maybe needs a ladder or a gate?
Loving the progress- same as previous comment- how do the workman get into the tank area ? Good job though
Bunds are normally scaled by ladders. Outlets are normally under or through the bund wall. I worked with bunded fuel tanks for a number of years.
I need to add some form of steps which is in the plans but thanks for pointing it out 😊
@@gordonhumphris5420 depends on the tank size, but for these little tanks, the bund wall would be low enough for just a couple of steps...
@@BrendanRaymondKoroKoro agreed but in real life the bund capacity would be 50% more than total tank capacity, I think Tris got it about right.

These were part of the guttering kit they do.

Am looking to start a train layout but I live in a flat which is not that big any advice in what size I can do
Hello, if you make it so you can fold it away that’s a start. This one is 30cm by 150cm. The fold away section is 30cm which means I can enjoy it on a small table
when the time comes to ballast the track do you plan on weathering the track?
