I did some non-musical theater and took some acting classes in college, in the early '90s. As a result, I hung out with a bunch of people who did musical theater and Lea Salonga was an absolute icon to them, because of Miss Saigon and Aladdin. I think this may be the first time I've seen her perform a full song and now, I completely understand why she was so idolized. I've never been into musical theater myself, but I think this performance might just be my gateway.
Love reading this! I do hope you'll check out more of Lea's performances. She has sung a lot of Broadway, but there are also non-Broadway songs in her repertoire.
Lea is the best musical theater singer ever. I saw her a year ago summer in Los Angeles crossing off a bucket list item. You have to hear her sing Someone to watch over me.
This is definately one of the greatest performances ever, and it is the gold standard of this wonderful song. When you have listened to Lea sing it, you will never be listening to that song without thinking of Lea's performance. Lea Salonga - Queen of Broadway!
To be able to sing with this power, convey such emotion, but yet still make it sound light and with vulnerability without being on any way harsh is just amazing. I've not heard a better musical theatre performance.
I was fortunate enough to hear her sing "On My Own" live as Eponine in Les Miserables on Broadway about 30 years ago. A memorable performance that I will remember the rest of my life. Even today she is fabulous.
The first ever Asian played a caucasian character, Eponine. She slayed playing the role that she nailed the role like a walk in the park that nobody questioned her participation in 'Les Miseranles' per se❣️
That last part always get me every time. I feel the emotion of Eponine. This is why despite a lot of performers doing belting and acrobatics of this piece, Lea's rendition is still my preference and reference. In this performance, you don't see Lea, you see Eponine.
A first-time viewer/listener but an old fan of music theater, though I've only seen a ½ dozen shows, mostly since my daughter haswever, what makes this special is I've worked overseas for the last 25 years, and many of my coworkers have been Filipinos, been in NYC. Ho and they truly are the musical islands! I'm very happy to see them gaining global recognition. Seeing a professional breakdown like this and so positive makes me very happy. Thank you! New subscriber.!
Clear enunciation, tons of pure emotion, flawless transitions and always on character. Pay particular attention to her body language (arms, eyes, mouth) pairing with her voice tone as she goes from her "happy" imaginary world to her "sad" reality. This video should be played at all Musical Theater schools around the world.
Yes, a loss. But honestly, despite her being captivating back then, it was her love of Les Miserables that really took her to the front of the list of theater singers. I saw her one night only in Miss Saigon, remembered her for sure. But was besotted when she played Eponine.
I adore Lea’s performance of this song (and this entire anniversary concert). Many of my fave versions of each song/character are here as well including Lea’s Eponine, Philip Quast’s turn as Javert, and particularly Ruthie Henshall’s Fantine. Specifically, her version of “I Dreamed a Dream” is absolutely breath taking and gorgeous. It makes me cry every time.
I would agree. That cast set the standard that was almost impossible to match. This song is vastly underated and is not performed as much as some others. Probably because no one can match it. I did not think her version of Fantine came up to the level she displaced in this character. I guess we always judge according to our ideal versions. Perhaps if we heard the movie version of Les Mis all other versions including high school productions would seem great in comparison. It still upsets me because many people had only the movie version to judge the musical versions by. Almost all the vocals were horrible.
Thank you for reacting to Leah. This is her performance on the 10th anniversary of Les Miserable. The cast on this show was the best of the best singers from around the world that performed from this musical show. I get teary eyed every time I watch her singing this song. Thanks again Beth.👏👏😎
She is def. one for the books. From Westened to Broadway to Disney's Alladin and Mulan to Broadway. He career lives on coz her voice is gold, pure gold.
I never can keep a dry eye when I listen to this. Lea is a treasure in whatever role she plays, as she always delivers the heart & soul of a song. This 10th anniversary concert has so many heart-rending performances I had to get it on Blue-ray.
For me, a great performer makes me believe that the story in the song really happened to them. Many performers just recite the lyrics, but Lea sells the song. Another from Les Mis is Anne Hathaway's performance in the movie version. Of course, she has the advantage that she's already an actor, but whatever, that performance was stellar.
One of the greatest performances ever. That whole 10th Anniversary concert is full of amazing performances. I especially love Philip Quast performing "Stars", Michael Ball performing "Empty Chairs at Empty Tables" and Colm Wilkinson performing "Bring Him Home." Outside of Les Mis, one of my favorite musical theatre performances comes from the Gypsy revival starring Imelda Staunton. Love her take on the character Rose. Her performances of "Everything's Coming Up Roses" and "Roses Turn" are terrific. And speaking of Imelda Staunton, while I haven't seen her entire performance in Follies, I've seen a video of her performing "Losing My Mind" and I love it.
Ironically Lea was not supposed to perform at the concert. The plan was to have Frances Rufelle (who originated the role and actually won the Tony for it on Broadway.) Unfortunately Cameron Macintosh totally vetoed the idea because of the past. When she was performing in the original production at the age of 21 she had an affair with the show's co-director John Caird (who was 17 years older) and got pregnant while Caird ended up leaving his wife. She became very sick during her pregnancy and had to leave the show. Macintosh refused to allow her to rejoin the show and never used her again (in spite of both Andrew Lloyd Webber and Trevor Nunn both still remaining huge fans.) In the end Macintosh overruled others who wanted Frances to perform at the 10th Anniversary Concert (a lot of famous fans, Judi Dench for one were extremely disappointed when she told them she wasn't asked) - and thus letting Lea step into the spotlight here.
The 10th anniversary concert is the only Les Miserable I listen to, to me it’s almost perfect. I worked with to Filipino women and I got major points with them for knowing who she is. Lea is only the singing voice of Jasmine and Mulan.
We've all seen this performance many times. There is a fun video on YT with Lea in a NYC bar singing On My Own. She's had a few - it's recorded on a phone - Darren Criss is there and Leah is gorgeous and spectacular as always! (maybe not quite *this* spectacular:) The only thing wrong with Lea Salonga is that she's perfect.
Always an amazing emotional performance! I just saw a video of Patti LuPone as Evita sing Don’t Cry for me Argentina at the Grammys in 1989. Another Iconic performance, if you’re looking for something for musical theater week!
Some other fantastic preformances from Les Misérables: Philip Quast - Stars, Michael Ball - Empty Chairs At Empty Tables and Colm Wilkinson - Bring Him Home
Hello Beth. Haven't heard from you for quite a while. My bad, I've been the one missing. I forgot how your singing voice was, and I'm reminded just now how beautiful your r voice is. Hats off to this post! Here in the Philippines, a singer can be popular but not revered. Alongside regine Velasquez, Leah is one of the few who's popular and revered at the same time. She is ageing gracefully.😁

Hello I love Lea Salonga I’m not a trained singer but I love listening to her sing. Is her style of singing what a vocal teacher would describe as musical theatre?
Lea is amazing but when I saw the original cast in Les Mis, Colm Wilkinson sang Bring Him Home and I could not hold back my tears. I looked around me after he'd sung and most men were crying too (ladies seemed to be okay!). His 10th anniversary version on TH-cam is great but the original cast recording, when he was younger, is unbelievably emotional as a father.
love lea's musical prowess always!! i would highly recommend Cynthia Erivo's I'm Here performance, as she says it's the most difficult she's ever had to do live with all the emotions as well!
I love Lea Salonga. Thanks so much. May I suggest revisiting Cynthia Erivo's stage video of I'm here. It's her roots and can, as Lea shows, how musical technique can combine with acting technique to tell the story with unmatched power.
Also, Shoshana Bean sings in all styles depending on her projects. Her "Make it Rain" at the Ace Hotel is phenomenal, as is her "Pawn it All" from the Alicia Keys musical she just left, or her "She Used to be Mine" from her time in Waitress. She also has done many evenings with Jason Robert Brown and done concerts at the Apollo with Cynthia Erivo. I think singers from Broadway are stereotyped and it's too bad.
Lovely addition of various facts about Lea and her career. Besides opening for Stevie Wonder in the Philippines back when Lea was a teenager, she also performed with Menudo a couple of times on tour in the 80s. They were HUGE - basically the 80s equivalent of One Direction.

hello. can you check out Elisia's rendition of Eyes nose lips please. She was a former theather performer in the Philippines and now with kpop group Unis. many people is in the belief that she can do justice to Disney songs. thank you
Hello, Beth! My wife and I absolutely love your videos! We’d be thrilled if you could react to Milton Nascimento’s Caçador de mim, he is one of Brazil’s greatest singers and composers of all time.
This is my favourite song from 'Les Mis,' and I never knew that it was adapted from one of Fantine's songs. I think it suits Eponine''s character a lot more than Fantine's. I've always loved Lea's interpretation, but it does help that I absolutely adore her performance as Kim in 'Miss Saigon.'
I think I've written this somewhere before: I love your facial expressions. I can feel when you're in love or when you... "Oh, okay"... But I miss your reactions to Elvis. I'd like to watch your reactions to "Unchained Melody", "My Way", "What Now My Love"... and so many others, from 1973 to 1977 when your voice was at its strongest. By the way, watching your reaction to J.D. Sumner would also be very interesting.
The only comparable musical theater performances I can think of Brian Stokes Mitchell doing “This Nearly Was Mine” from South Pacific and “The Impossible Dream” from Man Of La Mancha. Check those out if you haven’t.
As much as I absolutely LOVE this story, this musical, this song and this particular performance, I can't hear this without thinking of the parody song "Prednisone" by Morgan James with the Skivvies. It touches on the steroid culture among singers. If you are or were a "theater kid", you will get a kick out of that parody song.
Girl, you really really REALLY should react to Gal Costa's performance of "Meu nome é Gal" or "Nada mais". She's the biggest Brazilian singer of times btw ❤️
I dont know if you read the comments or not but i have watched a ton of your videos. As i was watching them i realized that i Don't think you have ever reacted to Aaron Neville. Please react to don't know much live by him and Linda Ronstadt. It is one of the greatest love songs ever and Aarons voice is one of the most unique i have ever heard. ❤❤
FYI, her name is pronounced as Le-ya not Li-ya and also she's the singing voice of Jasmine and Mulan. She didn't do the speaking voices of the Disney characters.
Request please! React to Missioned Souls performance of Alanis Morisette’s Uninvited… the mom is singing and the rest of the family plays the instrument… react to the talent of the whole family and be ready to be blown away❤ Missioned Souls is the best band in TH-cam world right now❤ wonder why you missed reacting to them.
Hello, I don’t know if you have done this before but I would love for you to check out BTS. They are de a Korean band with soo much talent and so different from anything there has been. I would love to see your reaction to their voices (4 vocalists). I would highly recommend Blue and Gray live or your eyes tell or film out, beautiful songs and more vocal oriented. I found your channel through the Spanish reactions. Take your and take care ❤!
If you want to see another fantastic (male) performance, you need to see John Farnham's Jesus Christ Superstar Gethsemane performance. Truly breathtaking, and iconic in Australia for decades.
I like watching Lea Salonga in this performance because I admire her incredible musical ability. But in terms of interpretation, I prefer Samantha Barks' version (from the 2012 film), cause the song has a more consistent rhythm and is more enjoyable at the end.
Have you ever examined Willemijn Verkaik? She played Elphaba off and on for 10 years (Germany, Netherlands, Broadway, and Wedt End)? Every time I hear Betty Buckley let it rip singing Memory from Cats I'm in awe at the power of her voice. Better? Debatable. But she definitely brings down the thunder. th-cam.com/video/5mlllRdIfqw/w-d-xo.html

Incredible performance. She's such a national treasure. Lea Salonga opened a lot of doors for fellow Asians, especially Filipino singers.
I have never made it through this performance without tears.

The ONE AND ONLY.... MS LEA SALONGA. WORLD CLASS. TIMELESS
A soft, gentle voice that holds such power...she is phenomenal. Didn't see her in Miss Saigon..a loss.

Imagine being a legend before you are 26. Talented and worked hard to develop the skills necessary to do what she did!!!!!!!!!
As a Filipino, I love Lea Salonga. But I also love how this reaction is very informational and professional. ❤❤❤
When she sings "The river.. is just a river" It punches me in the solar plexus.
I felt blessed to see Lea in concert, from origins of Miss Saigon through both Eponine and Fantine in Les mis.
I adore Lea’s performance of this song (and this entire anniversary concert). Totally agree with you - isn't she just fabulous? And Colm Wilkinson as Jean Valjean was just as magical!
As a trumpet player I've played Les Mis so many times I've lost count and this has always been my favorite song. Always really enjoy your reactions!

I had the chance to see her in Miss Saigon in London. It was such an amazing performance and was my introduction to her work.
She was/is a very special gift! PS so are you...appreciate your work!
The 10th anniversary concert is a piece of art, the versions of one day more and the finale are epic
I love the way how you analyze every details of Lea's voice and singing

PPPPLLLLLLEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSEEEEEEEEEE, from the same concert, Philip Quast singing Stars, the greatest Javert!
In Disney, Lea was the voice of both Princess Jasmine and Mulan.
Lea will often sing Some to watch over me to close her concerts. You have to hear that.

I would love to see your reaction to their voices (4 vocalists). I would highly recommend Blue and Gray live or your eyes tell or film out, beautiful songs and more vocal oriented. I found your channel through the Spanish reactions. Take your and take care ❤!

can you assess Unis rendition of Way 4 luv, dream of girls and shiny stars in Kyeong Seo?
