A band I’ve followed for over 20 years - everything they do takes you away to a different place and multiple, multiple listens unlocks so much more. Really one of the best bands going.
The call recall is Ian Anderson. He does multiple voice-overs in the record and has a nice flute solo on one of the tracks. Joey Tempest sings on one of the tracks, as well.
Ian Anderson narrates the part of the father. And Mikael’s daughter voiced the “disembodied” voice which is supposed to be the ghost of a secret daughter with Polio (or something like that). I absolutely love that the growls are back!! The album sounds like a huge mash up of all of their previous styles, and I think you can definitely hear the influence of Mikael writing for Clark
Opeth are legends. I got introduce to them (well, their music) around the time their Blackwater Park album came out (early 2001). It was actually their slowest hit on the album, Harvest, that drew me to listen to them. So i do appreciate their more melodic side. That said, I was a huge fan of their album Deliverance album, one of their heaviest albums ever (the live DVD was AMAZING!). Haven't listened to them much since Watershed ('08), still think Blackwater Park and Deliverance are their best works, along with lesser lights like Still Life and My Arms, Your Hearse, but I will definitely be checking out their new album. I am blessed to have had some musician friends as I grew up, mainly metal guys, who introduced me to all the wonderful music/bands from Europe that most people in NA never got/get to hear.
This new Opeth album is the first one I’ve explored and I like the mix of clean vocals with death metal growls. What I’ve heard so far from it really captures my imagination. I still listen to albums, but then, I’m 60 years old. Cheers!
Love mikael akerfeldt. His stuff with bloodbath is incredible aswell. His harsh vocals from 99 to 05 will never be beaten. Love his prog rock era too. He just ticks my boxes
Really surprised that you covered Opeth. I just listened to the album myself, it is incredible and a wicked return to form. I think Mikael is kicking ass, and it feels super tight.
Loved the song and his voice. It is very cool that they made this concept album. I feel that there is a certain group who will get into the story or theme, and others can still find a song that they choose to listen to more exclusively. As an aside, your intro was especially melodic today.
Second mic for the JHRA acoustic guitar is a colossal upgrade, and will improve the clarity of the vocals and the guitar in the mix. As discussed before, death growls were invented by John Entwistle of the Who on the song Boris the Spider, so no surprise that Opeth might re-embrace that rock vocal style. Dancing to prog metal is a varied thing, with some sensibly headbanging and others engaging in a strange form of freestyle dance or air guitar. Joakim Svalberg does indeed have an impressive collection of vintage electronica. In terms of bringing the Queen guitar sound to prog metal, that is largely down to Dream Theater.
I've listened to the whole album one time during my commute to and from work, I got to §6 during the drive home and maybe I was tired but the insanity of that track made me say "oh my God" and just start laughing at one point
Martin Lopez one of the best drummers ever in my eyes . I lost all respect for opeth after they sacked Lopez replacement after a decade of being their drummer, all because he refused to take a jab
@@marcot4863 youre way off bro, first of all you are referencing Martin Axenrot, not Lopez, who left due to medical issues and Axe replaced him. What were the band supposed to do ? Never tour because Axe wasn't willing to get the vaxx ? So those other guys give up their livlihood because Axe made a decision not to engage in the only way he could keep his position ? Axe made his choice, Mike and the rest of the guys owe him nothing at that point.
HAIL OPETH. This album is brilliant. I’ve been a die hard for for 22 years, this might be their best ever. Not my favorite, that belongs to Still Life, but this is the zenith of their ability and Mikael’s songwriting and vision.
OK, I write again to give my view to your questions at 16:29 : 1st: I find great that there are still bands doing conceptual albums🎉🎉🎉 2nd: Mikael is a great singer, he can do whatever he wants with his voice, I mean, I enjoy the way he goes from one sweet melodic voice to the most f***ing strong guttural in the world🤘🤘🤘 3rd: I enjoyed every second of the song, I can't wait to listen to the full album🖤🖤🖤 PS: 04:50, 06:37 The prog dance!!! 🤣🤣🤣 I took note of it to put it into practice next time I go to a prog concert😆😆😆😜
Not sure what happened there but I somehow donated $2 trying to send a comment which is fine but I just don't see the comment that I made. The reason I commented was when he said I see a little silhouetto of a man. I wasn't expecting the growl at the end and I was eating some nuts and almost got choked laughing. Anyway was hilarious one of the funniest things I've seen in awhile because I wasn't expecting that. But anyway very funny
Ooooohhhhhh!!! Finally OPETH!!!🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 02:18 😂😂😂 03:00 😂😂😂😂😂 03:20 the part of _"yes I can, Watch this! Grrrrrrllll"_ 🤣🤣🤣 OK, I'll focus on the video because if I don't do it, I'll be pausing it every second of the 17 minutes that it last😂 Thanks a lot Justin!!! Have a great weekend!❤😘
As an early days of Opeth fan, I really like the move here. I never really listened albums after Watershed, even tho I listen prog music a lot. Like I'm huge Porcupine Tree fan and really loved Storm of Corrosion (Mikael and Steven!) But somehow the prog rock side of Opeth never delivered it to me, compared to the metal music side..
Martin Lopez one of the best drummers in the world. I lost all respect for opeth after they sacked Lopez replacement for refusing to take a experimental jab.
@@marcot48631. It wasn't Lopez, it was Ax. 2. Without having the vaccine, traveling internationally became a huge issue for a band that travels internationally. 3. Are your feelings hurt, snowflake? Ax was a big boy and deserved the sack, especially for ghosting the band. Frederik confirmed this (ghosting the band).
This album is a bit more predictable than most of their discography. I don’t know if it has to do with the concept, which is kind of a closed story, and the fact of it being the same guy reading the whole thing, but generally they have a couple of surprises, sonically speaking, a different instrument, some arrangement, some harmonies… this time around I feel like it is all familiar. Yeah ok, he sings a bit lower than usual at times, but I don’t think it is a surprise per se or something remarkable.
I"m probably one of the only people out there that prefers he didn't growl. "m just not a fan of that stuff. His singing though is great and the music has always been amazing.
I used to listen to Opeth alot, and I e seen them live so many times. However, I’ve moved on from Opeth. Checked the album out earlier. It’s ok, but I find prog stuff pretty boring now.
I have always like Opeth's music, but have never been able to get into it because of the vocals. I just don't like any of what he does, the singing or the growl. It's just wrong for the music, for me.
Well it's a good thing most of the music scene considers him to have one of the best growls of all time, and he sounds just as good live if not better now than he did at the end of their prog death metal era
HAIL OPETH. This album is brilliant. I’ve been a die hard for for 22 years, this might be their best ever. Not my favorite, that belongs to Still Life, but this is the zenith of their ability and Mikael’s songwriting and vision.
WHOA, Justin reviewing Opeth?! This album definitely has a buzz around it. Well deserved. It is a masterpiece.
A great return to form. Mikael sounds so good here, the growls are nice and guttural. Fan since 2001 🤘
A band I’ve followed for over 20 years - everything they do takes you away to a different place and multiple, multiple listens unlocks so much more. Really one of the best bands going.
If I were ever to win the mega lottery, I'd pay silly money to have Justin be my evil hype man for a day.
Yep. I agree.
I believe in a thing called Opeth.
A video about my favourite band of all time?! Yep, you've got my attention. 👀
Justin Hawkins likes "Heritage"? Something I never thought I'd hear, maybe I assumed that bit. I love heritage.
The call recall is Ian Anderson. He does multiple voice-overs in the record and has a nice flute solo on one of the tracks. Joey Tempest sings on one of the tracks, as well.
Opeth is simply the best at what they do. I will travel far to see them perform. They operate on a whole other level. Really a first class act.
Thanks Immy!
Hell yea! So glad you've finally reacted to Opeth. Incredible band 👍
never thought id see Justin review Opeth!
i hope you do some more of their songs
Scott Walker is a good shout, Mike is a big Scott fan
Heritage rules. It’s my favorite album from the no growl era. Very abstract songwriting.
I've seen Opeth countless times, including an acoustic show with porcupine tree at berklee college of music in Boston. Great, great live band.

Oh, you have quite a back catalog of brilliance to check out! Every album is great but I highly recommend Blackwater Park and Deliverance
If you liked the new album i recomment you their albums 'watershed' and 'pale communion'. They have a similar vibe.
You can hear mikael’s love of Scott walker in the cleans to this song ❤
Tell me that you hate something without ever saying you hate the thing. Absolutely top class reaction.
Spark-sy!!! Perfect!
Love mikael akerfeldt. His stuff with bloodbath is incredible aswell. His harsh vocals from 99 to 05 will never be beaten. Love his prog rock era too. He just ticks my boxes
Good day to you one and all!
Spoken word stuff is done by Ian Anderson from Tull!
Opeth are the type of band to absolutely be using the real deal Holyfield synths.
Whoa 😱 Reviewing My favorite band alongside Deep Purple !!💜 must be dreaming 😩
Really surprised that you covered Opeth. I just listened to the album myself, it is incredible and a wicked return to form. I think Mikael is kicking ass, and it feels super tight.
Not my bag but I can appreciate the great musical talent & the story telling. The video is compelling too.
Hey Justin! Stopping in to say it's thanks to your reviews I've found some great new bands, even saw one of them live a few weeks ago!!
Loved the song and his voice. It is very cool that they made this concept album. I feel that there is a certain group who will get into the story or theme, and others can still find a song that they choose to listen to more exclusively. As an aside, your intro was especially melodic today.
The Prog & Rock Enchantment Under the Sea Dance.
Great album! Loved your reaction.

Amazing band.
I love Opeth, and this is my favourite album since Blackwater Park
I like this one too but Deliverance and GR flattens this.

Haha Justin Hawkins and Opeth, whoda thunk it.
It's interesting you mention ABBA and Scott Walker, both whom Akerfeldt has expressed his appreciation for.
That was the best performance of your opening song in a long time. Clean ! ROG sounds like a great new genre of music! Or PROCK !
Love the Scott Walker reference 😂
Who Mikael happens to venerate.
Thanks!
This album is like a movie. Really epic stuff. 9/10

Thanks for the introduction to this band. Like I said i must be living in a cave im so far behind on all the different music out now.
That opening sounds a lot like Rush!❤
Please check out "Why?" by Devin Townsend, Justin.
Kinda didn't expect Opeth to feature on here.
A collab between opeth and the darkness when?

One of their older songs is actually called Mellotron Heart. Never realized it was an instrument 'til now, lol.
That’s an alternate of their song Porcelain Heart
Hey im out of my cave and there you are.
Shakey Graves. I am begging you. His Audiotree live is unbelievable, he is a one in a million talent I'd love for you to check out!
The Scott Walker comparison got me.
Mikael loves him
Real progfests only happen in Prague. Orherwise, its just sparkling wine.
😂
True fact: 'Prague' is actually pronounced 'Prog'

Section 1, not paragraph 1. The symbols are similar.
Is it though? Frederik Åkesson plays through “Paragraph 3” and Waltteri plays through what he calls “Paragraph 1” on their YT channel?
it's Paragraph, literally refering to each paragraph in the will. in Paragraph & he refers to it as such in the lyrics.
It's possible that's a printing error, but the track list uses the symbol for section, not paragraph, in each title.
@elliottjoffe145 it is paragraph symbol, as well.
sounds good but emotionally empty album unfortunately
When I listen to this kinda of music I wonder if the lead singer has a can of Diet Coke and belch,s the words and then goes back to normal 😂

Awful album! It has some good parts, but overall, it's cheesey, unmemorable and completely lack lustre compared to their older albums.
It's their worst album by far. Songs lack identity.
His growls suck to be honest. They sound like what people who don't listen to metal think all metal vocalists sound like lol
Well it's a good thing most of the music scene considers him to have one of the best growls of all time, and he sounds just as good live if not better now than he did at the end of their prog death metal era
