      So you`re telling me there is a chance...

    • @Dillsfawn
      @Dillsfawn 3 ปีที่แล้ว +77

      More like one in a never chance.
      -Hunting group too large.
      -Hunting group too far away.
      -Hunting group would never attack head on(they'd sneak up behind the herd as they flee, and pick off the elderly or sick).
      -Bison herd would never turn away from a bunch of sticks in the ground(they'd trample through them)
      -Bisons are not lemmings and would not charge off a cliff.
      -And a Bison would not hook a victim then charge a long distance to throw them off the cliff(they'd gore them, then slam them onto the ground and trample them to death right there).
      There is a certain amount of "suspension of disbelief" one can spend with movies, but this scene went bankrupt and then just kept spending. Completely ridiculous.
      EDIT: Also just from a practical standpoint, even IF the hunters cajoled the bison's into lemming diving off the cliff, why keep fighting to the "front line"?! There are now a bunch of dead bison at the bottom of the cliff. Hunters could'a just fled at that point gone to the bottom and collected the now dead lemming bisons.

    • @steringp1434
      @steringp1434 3 ปีที่แล้ว +66

      It's impossible to say how pre-historic bison would react. They are bigger than modern buffalo and probably more aggressive. Their bigger size might have them utilize more of a fight than flight response. Think of a big animal like a elephant. They are probably more likely to charge a threat than to run away from it. Native Americans and Paleolithic hunters did actually drive herds over cliffs to kill the animals. Piles of bones from hundreds of herd animals, that clearly fell at the same time, have been found at the bottom of cliffs. the bones show the tell tale signs that the animals were butchered using stone tools (cut marks on the joints, etc.).

      @@mybluebelly They would have looked the same as we do. Genetically, humans have not changed for about 50,000 years. So, they were modern humans like us. The bison did not "jump" off the cliff. They were stampeded off. They probably couldn't tell that there was a cliff ahead of them, and even if they could, it would have been too late because the bison in the back would have pushed the ones in front over the edge. There is actual evidence that driving herds of animals over a cliff have been used. Even as late as the 1800's, Native Americans would do it. The practice was even witnessed and recorded by Lewis and Clark.

      The tribe would have moved and set up their camp at the bottom of the cliff. They were already nomadic hunter gatherers. They would force a herd over a cliff only about once a year. Then they would have enough meat to feed the tribe over the winter. They would preserve the meat by smoking it or cutting it into small strips and hanging it to dry and make a type of jerky.

I only ask because anyone who has wouldn't be asking that question. Yes, of course they could not get down that cliff. What they would do is the same thing that people today would do. They would find a place where the cliffs end and there would be an easy way there. You didn't think that the cliff went on forever did you? They might have to walk a few miles, but there would be some way down that was not a sheer cliff. Even at the Grand Canyon there are paths down in some places, but you could not get down in most places. Also, the hunters weren't stupid. They wouldn't stampede the animals over a spot where they couldn't get to the bottom. That wouldn't make any sense. They would probably have the rest of the tribe already waiting at the bottom of the cliff first.

    I love how the movie portrays the "𝙋𝙡𝙚𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙘𝙚𝙣𝙚 𝙊𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙠𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙃𝙮𝙥𝙤𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙨". This is basically as true as prehistory itself on how prehistoric modern humans would hunt and kill to feed large communities. In order for such communities numbering from 50 to 60 units, to feed itself on the during the long, harsh and dreaded winters of the Ice Age, they would hunt down large amounts of herbivorous Megafauna such as extinct Giant Bison (Bison latifrons) as shown in the movie and Mammoths (Mammuthus Primegenius). Yes, overkill sounds dreadful and certainly did drive the Mega Herbivores to extinction but this was one way to prove how modern humans would certainly survive the Ice Age and remain the dominant species.

    • @jt0094
      @jt0094 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You’re not seriously suggesting humans are solely responsible for the extinction of many large species of megafauna past 10,000 years ago are you? Considering this comment was a year ago, I’d imagine you’re views have changed with new findings. I once bought the overkill hypothesis but it’s just that, a hypothesis…. A cataclysmic event isnt an overstretch & is far more believable.

    • @yerman0564
      @yerman0564 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@jt0094 overkill hypothesis does make sense. Africa and Antarctica are the only continents whose megafauna ecosystems remained intact after the rise of humans. African animals were given time to adapt to simian shenanigans, and Antarctica was too cold and isolated for anyone to reach it. India also remained relatively unscathed, but India was naturally one of the first places humans entered. How would a cataclysmic event wipe out North American and Eurasian megafauna 10,000 years ago, but Australian megafauna died off 30,000 years before that? New Zealand's megafauna were fine until the Maori arrived in the 1200s. And every large species had gone through several interglacial periods and came out the other end. There is no reason to believe this one wiped them all out, but somehow humans and other African animals went unharmed.

    • @jt0094
      @jt0094 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@yerman0564 hmmmm that’s true, I just detest the idea that it’s only the doings of humans, it’s clear that around 12,000 years ago there was a huge string of destructive events on a near-global scale, and the consequences of that cataclysm (I believe), are the reasons we see so many species completely wiped out in North America, nearly all of which are very large mammals, it’s possible food became scarce due to said events slowly leading to mass extinctions, mass populations of species being obliterated by said events, or simple human desperation took over and the rest is history… I’d like to imagine it’s a mixture of them both. South America is also seems less affected, on a similar scale to Australia so that could explain why so many remained unscathed here. With the latest findings and our current understanding I think the overkill hypothesis being the sole reason for the extinction of millions and millions of mammals is far-fetched and widely overstretched… there were more mammoths than humans in America during the last ice age, and then with the younger dryas period…. Gone!

    • @yerman0564
      @yerman0564 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jt0094 oh I'm sorry I should've elaborated. I don't think overkill was *entirely* responsible for the demise of the megafauna, but I do think it was the final straw. During the interglacials climate change would've forced animals to adapt. During this period of adaptation natural selection would've wiped out huge percentages of species, leaving the species as a whole vulnerable to outside influence. In this case, that influence happened to be humans.
