This was a very fun build. It was a bit tough going through that footage, We lost Gypsy (White dog) last November. Terribly sad. We miss her. She was a wonderful creature.

I like to make things! This was a very rewarding build. Looking back on it, I am so glad that Wenonah didn't have that yoke in stock, because I would have bought it and this build never would have happened. I know I like the one I made so much more than the one they offer. That really worked out in my favor. I appreciate the comment, I really like that background I have going on here as well. Man stuff! Nice job! I made a yoke years ago based on an article in the old "Canoe" magazine. Yours looks great and I can't wait to see it in action on a future trip. You're going to get a lot of enjoyment out of using it! Until next time...be well.

looks good. love making my own stuff. maybe a big washer on the head of the bolt to stop it pulling threw the wood. well done boss.
Thanks man. I do have washers on both sides of the wood. I probably should have shown that configuration more on the video.
Very nice work. If you did not have a jigsaw, you could have considered an inexpensive coping saw. I think that might have made the initial yoke shape less work. Anyway, thank you for an informative video.

I just received my new solo canoe and need to do exactly this - make a yoke. I would like to know what “this” is…….that’s all you said about the bolt/tightener thingy ; ) . Those black tighteners look much better than standard wing nuts for aging arthritic fingers.

Thank you for the kind words. They are simply called threaded knobs. I picked mine up cheap at the local hardware store. They work great. What did you get for a canoe!!??

Nice yoke. You could probably have slimmed it down to half thickness out towards the gunwales.
That is a good suggestion. the thought never crossed my mind.....Thank you. I may have to revisit this project. The yoke is still going strong, and it fits my new canoe as well! I suspect I will get a lot more use out of it....

I don't make and sell them. I have considered it as a good winter hobby. But I just don't have the time right now.
Are you happy with the comfort level without pads? Some folks just use their PFD for comfort while portaging. You have built a beautiful yoke!
I am quite happy with the comfort level. I put some pretty heavy contour into this thing, it fits nicely on my shoulders. Also, the straps of the backpack offer some protection as well. It all worked out quite well. One of the portages I did last season was well over a mile, I had about 70lbs of gear, including the canoe. That weight seemed very manageable and I don't seem to recall any real noticeable discomfort from the yoke.
This was a very fun build , I am extremely pleased with it. I hope I have it for years to come. Time will tell. Thanks for stopping by man!
Nice work. I need to make one of these for my new canoe. Can I ask about a small detail, what is the purpose of the small notches on the gunwhale side of the edges? Thanks 🙏
That is a very good question. Those notches are to give room where the end of the rivets stick out on the inside of the gunwhale. This way the yoke is not pushing on the rivets.

That build looks great. Are you concerned about the wood marring the gunwale of the boat? It looks like it would be easy to add some padding to the yoke clamps (although you might need a longer bolt then. 😄)
Thanks Doc! I did glue a piece of thin closed cell foam to the yoke to protect the gunwale and give it more grip. You scared me there, I had to go back and check to make sure I put that part in the video. I didn't put any on the clamp that grabs the bottom side of the gunwale though. I think I am going to. I don't believe it will make much of a difference in grip strength, that seems real good as it is, and I am not really concerned about the cosmetics of that side of the gunwale. But there is a little bit of a squeak when I am walking....I believe it to be the wood on metal contact. If it is squeaking it must be moving enough to create that noise. So maybe it will improve grip strength..........I may need a longer bolt LOL!
@@ItsGoodintheWoods I apologize for missing that if you showed it in the video. That's the problem of watching youtube while I'm working. If the squeak bothers you, consider adding a delrin bushing to the bolt hole.
