Google (while its own researchers warn about the negative consequences)... is continuing to push generative AI and "AI Solutions" down our throats with zero remorse.
The Internet is getting bombarded now by a never ending torrent of AI generated slop, and google (fully aware of what's happening)... has decided that it may just be totally fine with them. From Facebook, to scientific research, AI is infiltrating our everyday lives, backed by trillion dollar corporations and even their own staff members are sounding alarm.

I mean, people don't even advocate for their own rights, or for what's in their own best interest. That's what got us into this mess in the first place. So I very much doubt the broad public will ever advocate for "AI rights". Corporations might do though, disguised as grassroots activism, by astroturfing, as they've always done.
Capital rules the collective because it rules the individual. Everyone, who has a traditional job at a bigger company is contributing to it, including me, and probably you, if you're honest.
If there is such a thing as hell, we're ALL going there, just by matter of proximity. It makes people like Ted K. seem reasonable and the "everyday citizen" like a brainwashed slave. I hate it, but I have no other choice but to comply, or be cast out.
As Daniel Schmachtenberger says; we have to fix the incentives. And it starts by dismantling corporate monopolies, taxing the rich up the wazoo, and if that's not possible, by manipulating and poisoning the mega machines we are part of from the inside.
Hard work's a grift. Steal from big corporations as much as possible and try to lose your bosses as much money as possible without getting caught or fired. Talk about your class situation and how work is killing us all slowly with your friends and family. Because it's true.
It's all we can do as individuals. Slowly dig at the foundation, bit by bit, not hoping for a total collapse, but a gradual shift. And draw hope from the collective that you know exists somewhere beneath all the layers of bullshit.
I believe the shift is already happening. I just hope it reforms us before it kills us.

I don't think there's ever been a collective understanding of reality. People used to believe the nonsense written in the printed press, now they believe things made up using AI. History repeating itself. Deep fakes maybe take it to another level, but there's already so many video clips, that are cut to give a false context, that's totally misleading, but people still think they're real. It has always been the case that if you repeat a lie often enough, lots of people believe it.

It is not able to infer or interpolate into the future like our brains can. Our best AI doesn't even come close to having the intelligence of an ant. AI is nothing more than a glorified search engine that gives you answers that are an amalgamation of what humans have already said or wrote. Think of it this way, chat gpt can only give you a "re-written" version of the data it was trained on. It can't formulate ideas or think like a human. Don't panic yet. I just read a Futurism article today pointing out that AI hasn't just been a dumpster fire: but a money fire as well. And lots and lots of companies are planning to either scale back or not increase funding for AI projects due to the fact that the magical "profits" from AI features have basically not materialized. A big problem is hallucinations, as well as the massive cost of using these services in the first place. These AI models require huge amounts of processing power to run at enormous cost with very little benefits to most companies. What's the use of an AI powered customer service chatbot that gives incorrect information and exposes your company to liability? So it seems we're about to hit the trough of dissolutionment on the Gartner Hype Cycle.

You are actually getting near a core truth there, Google still classifies YT as a 'public posting host site' but it now acts entirely like a private publisher, with full ownership and veto of all content assumed. However governments all over the world give it major tax reductions or even no tax at all, to provide the public service it pretends it is.
Most Google products are the same, being versions of products classed under telecommunications act and/or the UPU as essential utilities; but if they were to be compliant with that description, they'd not be alowed to own users content, nor trade it, nor have any say in what content it pleases them to delete/hype or which people can be banned; which is how google search and YT were when they started, just extensions of postal services. Now Google gets to exist dualistically across the two realities, as both an essential utility peoples asset AND a private corporate publisher; which is outright fraud.
So it is a utility - partly paid by the people, the regulations already exist; and google criminally and flagrantly ignores them and decietfully demands more money from advertisers and users, under the pretense it needs that to survive when it does not, evident in Alphabet Inc's ridiculously high profits.

I think the only way to fill people in on what's happening is to shame them when they fall for this stuff. And really, to inform them is the best you can hope for. The bar, as low as it is, is already high enough to fool them.

The fun part with the google AI is that you can turn it off by adding "problematic" terms to your search. I've taken to just adding "-gun" to the search and AI won't touch it. The minus ahead of the term says "don't give me terms with this word" so as long as you're not searching for guns you're fine.

It's a fundamental problem that is occuring now, that we'd been warned about by the people who did all the ground-breaking work of designing and coding for the concept of AI in the 60's. AI can be used as a beneficial tool, a free public utility of great benefit, what google want is to use it to weaponise and turn all their products into deceptive, digital dumpster fires devoid of human creativity or autonomous thought expression. Also they will be/already are lobbying regulators and Gov to give them exclusive corporate use of the tool.

With that next will come fully digitalised monetary system. Progress has its own ways of manifestation.

Guys, don't you think it is kinda fuxking brave of _the people who actually work at google_ to publish as comprehensive information as they can (I suppose), about the biggest issues and concerns, they recognize in their own workplace, or maybe even in their own projects, they are working or have worked on?
I'm asking, because I hope you DO realize, that even if these researchers would quit their work, someone else would replace them immediately. Therefore, I think, by writing and publishing such research paper (and I hope, this is just their first one, of many to come), these workers rather showed they in fact do care, and they care a lot, about what's happening in this huge and powerful corporation.
Oh, and also, do you think that if google stopped developing all this sheit, everyone else would stop too? At least google has people, who are willing to share with us and publicize what kind of abuses we can more or less expect in the nearest future

The modern internet is way more functional than old internet. You don’t have to deal with dialup, everything runs faster and you can do a lot more with web pages. However it’s certainly become much more centralized, more toxic and less free than it once was. I grew up on 2000s internet, but I try not to let nostalgia cloud my judgement. I suspect that a lot of people, if transported back to the 2000s internet would find themselves yearning for the speed and functionality of the modern web before long.
And I say this as someone who often pines for the days of web forums and YTMND
Also the ceiling for the quality of web content has dramatically improved. A channel like UEG would probably be unheard of in 2007, as well as like 12 hour reviews of Oblivion lol
