Four orphaned goslings early on a Saturday morning…

A heartwarming start to the weekend… 🥰
Four tiny goslings, just days old, suddenly appeared in an enclosed back garden on a residential estate with no adult geese anywhere in sight. The poor babies, that were terrified and running around in a close group all over the garden, were thankfully caught easily with my big net and transferred into a box provided by the lovely lady who had contacted us.
Geese are outstanding parents with extremely strong protective instincts. They tend to live in large families, often watching over each others goslings and it’s not uncommon for lost or orphaned goslings to be adopted (or just outright pinched!).
I knew there were greylag families with goslings of the same age at a lake nearby, so we decided to take the orphans over there to see how the goose parents reacted to them. It had to be better for them to be raised naturally rather than going into care, so we wanted to at least try to give them that chance…

We saw them this morning and they had gained another fluffy so were at nine!
