  • Frustrated by Poppies? Here’s the way to master the most beautiful and most frustrating flower of all! Paint along with me and learn an easy method of bringing light into the red of the petals and life into the whole plant. AND you only need four colours to paint this flower successfully.

    The colours I used were:
    Paynes Grey tinyurl.com/tzwrr7fv
    Quinacridone gold tinyurl.com/2b53nta5
    Olive Green tinyurl.com/pskenpvk
    Bright Red tinyurl.com/2kjzbaxb

And the brush I buy is Series 11-2
List of Recommended Materials and Equipment from Jacksons Art
    PAPER
Both these papers (Bockingford and Langton) are ideal for learning to paint, as they offer correct response from the watercolour paint, and yet allow corrections and alterations which more expensive papers do not permit. You need Cold Pressed (NOT) paper. Choice of size is up to you, as is the format.
    BOCKINGFORD : GLUED PAD : A4 (8 x 11 ins): 300GSM (140lb): 12 SHEETS : NOT (Cold Pressed Medium Texture) £8
This paper is ideal for beginners as it is tough yet responsive. It is easy to make corrections on this paper, which has an attractive and distinctive texture. It is available in lots of sizes and as pads, blocks and sheets. It is available in Hot Pressed, NOT and Rough.
Here is a link to an A4 glued pad (NOT texture) tinyurl.com/w89h7k8b
    DALER ROWNEY: LANGTON : A4 (8 x 11 ins) 300gsm (140lb): 12 SHEETS:NOT (Cold Pressed Medium Texture £8.50
The Langton is a high-quality watercolour paper ideal for beginners. The paper is colour-stable, mould-made and acid-free, and is designed to withstand repeated washes without pulping or cockling. It is available in three surfaces: Hot Pressed, NOT and Rough. It is available in pads, blocks and sheets. Here is a link to an A4 glued pad. tinyurl.com/h7wjhvs7
    BRUSHES
I use mainly round synthetic brushes. You will need sizes 5, 7, 11 and 14. I recommend the following brand: PRO ARTE PROLENE Series 101 or 007
Prolene brushes use refined synthetic fibres specially developed by Pro Arte. A popular and versatile brush. Available in a full range of sizes and shapes. Click on link to see more.
    PRO ARTE : PROLENE PLUS : SERIES 007 : ROUND : SIZE 7 £5.33
Improved colour holding and pointing properties. Set in a beautiful ferrule which is plated with gold. Polished teak handle completes the brush. Here is a link to a size 7.
    tinyurl.com/bem677ev
    PRO ARTE : PROLENE PLUS : SERIES 101 : ROUND : SIZE 7 £5
Used mainly for watercolour, they are exceedingly hardwearing and unlike sable, will not damage easily. Finished with seamless nickel ferrules, and black polished handles with gold tips. Here is a link to a size 7.

    TUBE PAINTS
I always have a tube of White Designers Gouache on hand for lights and corrections

These colours are very useful and don't usually appear in the sets the manufacturers make:
    Naples Yellow

    Quinacridone Gold
    amzn.to/3qb3FMs
    Permanent Rose

    BRUSHES
Princeton do a good range of synthetic squirrel brushes. This is a size 10 round.
    amzn.to/3q6Y35F
And Winsor and Newton Cotman brushes are also good. This is a size 10 round.
    amzn.to/36Xn8Zb
I often use a rigger brush (called script liner in the US) and this is a link to the Cotman range of riggers, this is size 1.
    amzn.to/3a0nikC
A size 3 would also be useful.

Just came across this Diane. I love the loose way you painted the poppies and I must try it on my quest to loose watercolor painting. I’ve just finished the squirrel family in their Fall houses. I’m pretty excited about it! Now, to see if I’m brave enough to share in the FB group. Hope you are all well❣️

Did you ever try a Betta Fish? Couldn't find one in your list and would really like to see one "wet in wet", abstract style.

Love these poppies...how did you keep the Paynes gray from bleeding, unless you allowed the yellow to dry, which the video didn't say you let it dry??

    • @DianeAntoneStudio
      @DianeAntoneStudio  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thanks! It was nearly dry at the inner edges by the time I put the grey in. The paper is quite absorbent and the grey was relatively thickly mixed so it didn’t really run. Hope that helps!
