Surprised i'm seeing this just now. I hardly see people talking about Junko and her backstory. This is amazing! One of the most saddening backstories in Touhou Project and I am glad to see that it's told via a song
Junko has the ability to purify something and make it divine making her a rare god creating goddess, Junko never uses her power to make someone fully divine but makes people’s powers divine like her anger. Junko is a divine spirit fueled by divine anger but she isn’t an animal her tactics are straight forward but she can be resonated with and eventually calms down.
It should be noted that her purification of Clownpiece made a simple hell fairy, about as strong as the average fairy at most, into a presence rivalling even Reimu and Marisa in raw strength, and both Touhou protagonists have actively beaten actual gods before. Clown only lost against Reimu, who has the power to become intangible and has infinite destructive power with homing bullets, and Marisa, the magician trained by *the* great vengeful spirit who rivals Touhou's equivalent of Satan herself in magical strength and even overpowers Shinki in many ways. Junko is strong.

Hello, I come again to offer my insight into this metal cover. This is a breakdown of the lyrics, as well as providing backstory to one of Touhou’s deeply tragic characters. The divine spirit of pure fury, Nameless Being, Junko. All of what I write is taken from the official Touhou wiki as well as a bit of fan material, since much of Touhou’s popularity and content is generated by the fandom. (Warning! Long post incoming!) (edit: spelling) So for some much needed background, Junko’s story is based on both a historical Chinese narrative and legend. In history she was known as Xuán Qī, but was nicknamed Chún Hú (lit “Pure Fox” and alternate spelling of Junko). She was married to the leader of the Xia Dynasty, Hòu Kuí and both had a son together, Bó Fēng. Hòu Yì, the Lord Archer, enters to take over the empire and exiles Hòu Kuí, kills Bó Fēng, and forced Xuán Qī into marriage. Enraged and desiring revenge, she conspired to kill the tyrant with Hòu Yì's minister, Hán Zhuó.There is also Hòu Yì in legends, where he saved the world by shooting down 9 of the 10 suns. In ancient China, one week was considered 10 days and with it there were 10 suns each, but on one day all 10 sons rose at the same time, threatening to burn all life on earth. It was also here where he was known to be the husband of Chang’e, Moon Goddess who drank the Hourai Elixir that Hòu Yì brought back which granted immortality and floated away to the moon. Touhou combines both stories into one but there are many omissions and discrepancies. Such as no mention of Hòu Kuí or Hán Zhuó, and even changing the relation of Bó Fēng into Hòu Yì’s son, rather than Hòu Kuí's. Thus making the murder of Bó Fēng filicide. And so, the story goes as follows… Chapter I: Viloma It was the dead of night, the moon rose full to shine it’s pale light across the land. In the far corner of the empire was a small villa, home to the beloved young prince. He was so innocent, playing with his toys past his bedtime even though he risked his mother scolding him. But he had heard the news, his father would be returning from his long journey to find and meet the great lunar sage. He could not contain his excitement this fateful night, as it has been an age since he last saw his beloved father. It was when the moon rose at its highest when he returned, the young prince saw his shadow and turned way to be reunited. And it was at its highest that tragedy struck, when the walls were stained in red. The emperor had slain his own child to further fuel his own ambition, as he could never be content with ruling the earthly world, but desired a place higher than the heavens where the divine beings reside. For he was promised that if he were to take the hand of his beloved Goddess, he would ascend and take his rightful place. All he needed was to gift her the drink of immortality… and do away with his old life, with such a meager price, nothing could be more simple he thought. All he had to do was kill one defenseless child… Horror lays before my eyes My blooded hands tremble in fright They’ve taken the light and joy from my life My son’s life paid in the blood of your kind The Empress had returned later that night, the dead was done. Shock and horror was shown all over her face, there lay the still warm body of her son, an arrow deep into his heart. There was no question in her mind who had him slain, for an arrow to strike so true and so precise means there was only one man. She had known the truth, she had known his ambitions, and yet to believe that it would all lead to this, she could never have known. The moon shines its light on this quiet night A remembrance of a terrifying crime As I raised my cries into the blackened sky My despair and grief shall make me sanctified The children of the moon shall feel my hate Rage so pure, I am vengeance incarnate The fury in my heart, I won’t forsake Now your kind shall taste wrath immaculate It was sadness and despair which had pierced her heart like the arrow to her son’s own. But then came rage… grief, hatred, vengeance… a fury so pure it burned away at her body. She would not just swear to kill him, but all those who could be implicit to the crime, those who call themselves divine shall know her pain a thousand times. She screamed that she would become vengeance, to become a divine hate, she would forsake everything she was in the name of her own fury. Chapter II: Confrontation It would not be long before she would have her chance, before the Emperor could return to his Goddess, she had chased him down to a corner of his palace. There he now faced the unbridled might of a The Fury. But he was the greatest archer in all the land, he who saved the world from the might of 10 burning skies. To him she was no different than the monsters he slew many times before, the irony lost upon him. Arrow after arrow he flung with great power, but not a single one could even tear past the fabric of her robes, before he knew it the battle was over just as it started. In a single instance, before he could let loose his last arrow. The Fury closed the distance with a blink of an eye. “What did you feel when you butchered my son?” She uttered coldly, he could not answer with the piercing of her claws through his lungs. “When my tears flowed into his puddle of blood?” All he could respond back was a cough, the taste of iron filling his mouth. The pain was agonizing as she slowly drove deeper into his chest, her grip tearing through his flesh. “Taking your life won’t be enough” He felt his strength leaving him. His last thoughts were questioning how this could have happened? Should he have killed her first? Was he tricked by his Goddess? Is her rage truly so unfathomable? “But it will be the start of what must be done” He could not hear the last words. For in his mad quest to reach the divine, he would spend an eternity in the burning blazes. As I savor the sound of your final sigh My eyes lock with yours as it turns to white And while the world knows that my act is justified I find vengeance to be a sweet delight It was done, vengeance was had. The Emperor and murderer of her beloved son was no more. She took a great joy in his death and greater joy watching him fade away as she embraced one last time, savoring the warm sensation of his blood on her hands. It was swift, merciless, and absolutely wondrous. As I stand, the victor, over my mortal foe My soul calms now that I’ve settled the score But why does my shattered heart yearns to do much more? My sights turn to a new foe to oppose At last she pulled away leaving the corpse of her former husband to fall to the floor. A smile washes over her face as tears streamed down from her maddened red eyes. And yet, when the moment has passed and she stared down her once mortal enemy, what should have been her finest hour turned unsatisfactory. The Fury realized that it was not enough, it will never be enough. So long as his Goddess existed along with her kind, there will be no end to her grief. Chapter III: Condemnation Widow of my foe, I call you from below My anger still grows, retribution I’ll uphold It had been many years since that fateful day. The world had turned over a thousand times since she had declared war against the moon. Yet even now The Fury had not forgotten her purpose, the reason for continued existence. She must kill Chang’e. Alas, things are now not as simple as it was when she murder the Emperor. Horror plagues my troubled mind (They murdered my dear child) Memories of the light of my life (He had the sweetest smile) I set my goals towards the moonlight (Soon vengeance shall be mine) Now begins the end for your kind (Now innocence shall die) The memory of long ago still burns bright within her soul, though the details have mudded with time. The life as pure hatred had caused her to lose sight of herself, even now she can’t remember why she started this war, or even her true name… All she has left is the burning feeling of loss deep in her heart. Though she knows not what the pain means anymore, the end goal is still the same. The weakest of all, I’ll uplift and purify The Sea of Tranquility I’ll fill with life And as your kind flees amidst the rising strife I’ll see to it that by my hands you will die My anger and rage, now refined and purified Now extends to all of your damned kind And once I am done with you, I shall seal their fate They shall know naught but my divine hate In her latest hour she would not strike alone. For in a pact made with a Goddess of Three Hells, who desires the same vengeance as her, The Fury now has an army to strike the lunar capital. With her powers to purify she granted them overflowing life, the very force that the Lunarians are weak against. They could do not against the swarm, not without risking their own lives. And so they flee in terror, but it would not be for long. It does not matter if the innocent shall die from her wrath, for what was taken away from her, nothing shall be spared. And Chang’e will watch it all. This is the divine justice, this is anger and wrath made a manifest, this was her grief and despair brought forth in return, She would be called The Fury, the Great Invader. She would give one name in return. Junko There are times when the grief overtakes her once more. She returns to a lonely grave with its description time faded. Littered were offerings of a child’s belongings, and long into the days and nights she would sit here. She could not remember this child’s face, their name, nor could she remember their death. Yet the tears would flow all the same. All that remained here where faded and bloodied memories… and a broken heart for two.
This is such an amazingly creative way to explain the story to those unfamiliar with Touhou. I love how you made your story newcomer-friendly while still being accurate to canon and the presentation in the song. Not to mention, you're an amazing writer - it was very engaging, even to somebody familiar with the story already. Bravo!
Amazing explanation. I would only add one clarification about her plan to strike at the Lunarians, though: The reason why the fairies' "overflowing life" is so dangerous to the Lunarians is because they are "pure" existences to which the environment and life energy of Earth and its inhabitants are "impure" and thus incredibly toxic to them. Even something as seemingly innocuous as gaining immortality through drinking the Hourai Elixir "taints" the drinker with the concept of death by the very absence of said concept from them (yes, it's weird metaphysics). On a side note, there is an additional element of horror to Junko's current state of existence. She originally purified herself into a pure incarnation of rage, hatred and resentment to fulfill her revenge against her son's murderer, yet when that was achieved, she found that the hatred in her soul still burns and turned her attentions to Chang'e (and by proxy, the Lunarians). And that makes sense; having reduced herself to nothing but hate and resentment, she literally cannot do anything but act upon that emotion. So one shudders to imagine what would happen if she does manage to murder Chang'e after exterminating the Lunarians to make her suffer; in all likelihood, the cycle would repeat and she would be compelled by her own fathomless hatred to find something else to "avenge" herself upon. Who would be her next target? The people of her country, perceiving them to have "failed" her son by "allowing" his murder? And after genociding them, would she then turn to neighboring countries, driven by similarly perceived connections to her son's murder? And when Earth is just a sterile wasteland, would she go out to the rest of the universe to seek the next inhabited planet, with the intent on "punishing them" as well? Would burning the entirety of the universe to ashes finally bring her peace, or would she stand alone in the lifeless void, tormented by an all-consuming hatred that she can no longer fulfill? Is she even capable of committing suicide at this point? Would it even change anything? Is it possible for her to commit the ultimate suicide and erase her existence completely? Really, when you think about it, Junko's existence is arguably one where she's doomed to inevitable misery.
BTW, you have a few typos and the occasional missing word, like misspelling "complicit" as "implicit", but nothing that impeded understanding of what you intended (unless the reader is has a low grasp on English).
@@MarqFJA87 i think she failed to fully purify herself, its the reason why she can be reasoned with after you beat her. The reason i think that is, is because at some part of herself, she cannot forget here child, no matter how low that impurity is, it cannot be removed, and the only reason she has any concept of self left.
there is no rage one should fear more than the parent of a child who was killed in cold blood. I don't know much about Touhou lore so do forgive me if i should but I they can never make me hate Junko.
Lunarians are jerks. In fact they are actual guys responsible for youkai nature of being malevolent towards humanity. So, Lunarians are the source of sufferings for many.
From what I gather, she's not so much evil as she has become a force of nature that is incapable of feeling any emotion that isn't resentment, with the Lunarians (and Chang'e in particular) being the *current* focus for said emotion after she killed her son's murderer. You can no more demand that she stop seeking the extermination of the Lunarians than you can demand a typhoon to stop wrecking your homeland with tree-ripping winds and coast-drowning high waves.
You're right on the money here. Junko's son was killed by the lunarians, a race of moon rabbits (hence why the person she kills has rabbit ears), and she swore vengeance against the Lunarians entirely. The Lunarians are also just terrible in general, so it's completely justified.

When I heard you were doing a cover of Pure Furies, I knew it would be godly, but this surpassed my expectations in every way! I love the story you wrote for the song, the prose is amazing, and the art is great!! The instrumental is epic, and the singer is so talented and compliments it perfectly, you can hear the pain and anger in her voice so clearly.
@@strgunlinr2464 There are 3 reasons as to why. 1. The belief of purity (purity in soul from the cycle of life and death, thus making them immortal. Life is considered "impure" thus Earth is an impure place that goes against the Lunarians' beliefs of purity) 2. The belief of purity (as mentioned above) makes Lunarians seemingly racist and xenophobic to humanity on Earth (although, as shown with the Watatsuki sisters, they're not as racist as the fandom portrays them to be.) 3. Due to their racist tendencies, It was implied in obscure lore that the higher echelons of Lunarian society developed various plans to eradicate the Earth of all impure life (mass genocide) so that they will resettle the Earth as a pure, lifeless, yet still inhabited world.

She was already immortal, that's why she could purifie her rage without dying. Not a true immortality but immortal enough, like the other gods from the moon.
her form of purification is like what is used in metal working or chemical, not what you think of as the religious side aka removing evil. As an example, she could make something pure evil, or pure good, this is a bad thing tho, because of the religion she comes from, a thing is defined and given self by its flaws, thus something pure has lost its identity.
@@zetaking2909 Which is why, as she is now, she doesn't remember... anything about the woman she was. Her name, the reason why she must take revenge, the child she lost, what his name was... nothing. But every so often, she still feels these pangs of utter despair and sorrow, and she finds herself visiting a certain grave that has long since been worn and eroded by time. She then begins to cry for days on end, not knowing why or for who she's crying. But these emotions come all the same. Junko is a deeply tragic character, and is one of two characters I know of that is the purest embodiment of the phrase "Revenge is a poison that kills two people." Who's the other? Ai Enma, the Hell Girl.

this hits so hard, it threw me to the moon and back it really feels so criminal to have only a few lines of comment, but it's all my brain can think of idk, this music just threw everything i knew away idk if i feel happy, sad, depressed, angry, it's either a mix of emotions or one yet to be discovered yeah... congrats
The story is great, and the art is incredible, but by god are the lyrics the absolute peak. Some of the rhymes are fantastic, like the hate/incarnate/immaculate in the first part is great. But the part that's stuck in my head since hearing it is "Widow of my foe, I call to you from below", because holy shit does that line slap. Plus, it has multiple meanings, outside the story of Junko, since "From Below" could also refer to hell in western culture, giving off the vibes of someone having a grudge strong enough they're coming for round two from beyond the grave. And "Widow of my foe" in general is chilling when spoken by someone full of rage since it's implying they're coming after not just the person that wronged them but everyone else. Though within the context of the story it's because Chang'e was responsible as well, but separate from the story it's a line that hits hard as fell. Overall, absolute 11/10 banger, really reminds me why my favorite genre of music is Touhou.
I think junko would just kill angron, because he killed a lot of his sons, then see if she can do something to help the world eaters, but if it's after the hh and they are corrupted, she'll probably just kill them too.
Her in 40K would be.... interesting, her ability would have massive ramifications on the warp, and the emp. She would split each of the chaos gods into there component parts aka korn would be broken into at least violence, honor, justice, rage, hate, martial tradition, gods. Magnus and chicken boy also have a big gamble with her, she could purifie there flesh of its mutations, or purifie them to the highest form of said mutation >.>;

Be VERY scared of the angry mom. She killed Houyi of all people, the man who shot down 9 of the 10 Jinwu’s, AKA, sun birds (The 3 Legged Golden Crow)! Basically, each of his arrows are capable of destroying the sun… Junko sure is scary… Also, sadly, she will never fully complete her revenge against Chang’E, since she has drunk the Hourei Elixer, making them quite literally impossible to kill. Also also, Utsuho gaining her sun god powers is probably a direct result of Houyi killing 9/10 Jinwu’s. Since Kanako basically fed Utsuho the eyeball containing all the power of a Jinwu (The Eye of Yatagarasu). This probably also means that 1 of the 9 Jinwu’s Houyi killed was Yatagarasu. This makes Junko even scarier, because Utsuho is one of the stronger characters, and Junko killed a man capable of killing Utsuho with a single arrow. Now for a fun and funny Touhou fact. The lunarians living on the moon got angry when they found the American flag planted on the moon, and took it as a decoration of war. So canonically the US is basically at war with the Lunarians (AKA Space China). Although, funny enough, the US probably isn’t aware that the Lunarians exist, so it’s a very one sided war declaration (Albeit, I find it funny to think that the US does in fact know. And I choose to have this be my head cannon, because the thought of NASA secretly battling it out with the Lunarians is hilarious to me) Also, a funny hell fairy named Clownpiece saw the American flag on the moon, thought it looked cool, and now she wears the star spangled banner as an outfit lol. (I think she also likes that it makes the Lunarians angry, but I forget lol)
@47syorha52 That’d be impossible, since the Hourei Elixir literally separates the soul from reality itself, making one truly immortal. Every character that’s drank the Hourei Elixir is truly unkillable and immortal in the truest way possible, with no way to kill them at all, as their very essence of existence is completely separated from reality itself. So no matter what you ‘do’ to the body you see infront of you, a new body will only appear in the next moment completely unharmed. Touhou powers usually do exactly what they say they do, with no defined limitations. And the Hourei Elixer takes precedence over even other hax like powers. As even Yuyuko has stated that her power of straight up death is incapable of killing the likes of Mokou and Kaguya. (And being separated from reality means their immortality transcends space and time, so no time travel shenanigans would work either) In terms of power, I have no doubt that Junko would absolutely thrash Chang E’, but there’s no chance of killing them, as there isn’t a single power in Touhou capable of breaking the neutronium clad rule of True Immortality granted by the Hourei Elixer.
@@backgroundcharacter2585counterpoint; it's directly stated that Junko would be able to kill the protagonists if it wasn't because of Eirin's medicine. You know, one of the protagonists being Reimu Hakurei, the person able to float outside reality.
@ Then my other point I’ve been saving, is that the Hourei Elixir IS also Erin’s medicine, not only that but it’s her Magnum Opus. And even more, it’s essentially the distilled essence of Kaguya’s power, the power of Eternity, the ability to be untouched by time. So even if you try to rewind the drinker back to the point before they drank the elixir, they are Eternal, and thus time can’t affect them. So that’d be two points lol. The Hourai Elixer does exactly what it says it does, it makes it impossible to die, even if you want to. This is getting fairly abstract lol, but your point is a good one. Being able to ignore Reimu’s power is definitely a solid one, but in the end the Hourai Elixir just has everything going for it.
Great video I've been waiting this for so long. My only criticism is that I wish it was uploaded during the mooncake festival because it's very fitting that you upload a song about chang'e nemesis in a holiday where she ascended to the moon. But than again it's just nitpick so don't think about it that much. Overall great video

Oh and lunarians are harmless to her. I forgot why she's like that but if I remember her purify ability is different from the "purity" of the lunarians and junko can also straight up instantly kill them somewhat. Something about removing lunarian purity to strip their immortality. Epic character. Number 1 lunarian slaughterer.
Other note. Moon rabbits are not considered true lunarians. So moon rabbits are the only defense against junko the lunarians have. Again that's why the lunarians held gensokyo hostage to Kickstart the events from legacy of lunatic kingdom. Overall junko Def a 10/10 character. Did she die after purifying herself to hate? So many questions yet non mandatory to be added. I like junko. (:

If you think about it, Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom was just about trying to convince an inquisitor to not exterminatus a world out of boredom because the chaos cultists already left it.
Not out of boredom per se, more out of vengeance. To put it bluntly it's exterminatusing a planet because one chaos cultist killed your kid (that one chaos cultist is dead, dead as hell)
The issue there is that the imperium are such shits that I'm pretty sure exterminatus-ing a planet because it *previously* had chaos cultists on it is considered well within acceptable bounds of behaviour for inquisitors

Imagine an alternate FAM x 2hu timeline where the moonies killed one of Tracy Stevens' two sons, she'll be so mad that she became 20th Century Junko (America edition). ...There's a lot to compare when talking about the Moon and an angry mom who just lost a child.
Discussing a certain event, I was called out for my lack of shock or horror at someone being killed in front of his family. I responded with, "Why kill an enemy in front of his family when you can kill his family in front of him?" That was the end of that conversation.

Junko is angry/vengeful because her son was murdered by the husband of the moon goddess Chang'e. She possesses the power to "purify anything", which isn't as simple as it sounds. The power lets her strengthen one aspect of something by removing or reducing other aspects of the thing (similar to purifying metals). She used this power on herself, purifying herself into a divine spirit of hatred and rage even sacrificing her name in the process (Junko is one of the few characters in the series to not have a last name, she almost certainly would have had one before this (I think)). After killing the husband of Chang'e she turns her hatred towards Chang'e and the lunarian people on the moon (who are all kinda awful tbh). The lunarians have achieved a form of immortality by completely seperating themselves from the concepts of life and death, turning the moon into a "pure realm" where nothing is born and nothing dies. This does mean however that their immortality is reliant on them not coming into contact with anything heavily tied to either concept (somewhat hilariously this means a new born baby would be highly toxic to the lunarians, you could probably kill one, or at least cancel their immortality, by just making them touch a baby). In the game Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom, Junko teams up with the goddess of Hell, Hecatia Lapislazuli, to invade the moon and kill the lunarians. Junko uses her power to supercharge a bunch of fairies with life energy and use them as an army to bring life to the moon, in doing so cancelling the immortality of the lunarians and poisoning them with life, thus also bringing death. This forced the lunarians to flee to the dream world to escape from Junko. The Lunarians then decided they would have to relocate, and would you look at that Gensokyo (the home of the rest of Touhou) looks mighty suitable, only one problem, it's still full of that pesky thing called life... the Lunarians deem this a fixable problem and set out to invade Gensokyo. The player characters are not strong enough to actually beat the lunarians, but don't share their weakness to Junko's strategy, so are forced to go stop Junko so the Lunarians don't need to invade Gensokyo any more.
The only context you need to understand the song is that Junko, the main character here, had her son killed by the Lunarians, the people of the moon with rabbit ears. This enraged her, and she swore vengeance against the Lunarians. The explanation above does a great job delving into more of the lore behind it.
They really don’t, that’s Yorihime’s ability specifically and we never see the two fight. While Junko is a terrifyingly powerful foe, even more so than Yukari, it was Purification ability used on Clownpierce(An *impure* fairy) that cause the Lunarians to nope the fuck out because they *really* cannot deal with opponents that abuse impurities. Like SSiB!Reimu forced Yorihime to admit a draw despite being horribly outclassed at the time simply because she summoned a God that unleashes impurities.
Imagine getting persued by what is the personification of pure, unbrided anger for more than a thousand years, just waiting for a chance to strike once and obliterate everything you've ever loved...

The basic jist is that the archer shot down the suns (old Chinese myth) and one of them assumedly killed her son in the crossfire. So she took revenge by killing him, but in the process became a human-shaped being of pure resentment, essentially a daemon
TL;DR Chang'e's husband killed her child. Her ability is to purify things, which made her purifying her own grudge, leaving behind only pure rage against Chang'e

Surprised i'm seeing this just now. I hardly see people talking about Junko and her backstory. This is amazing! One of the most saddening backstories in Touhou Project and I am glad to see that it's told via a song

Junko has the ability to purify something and make it divine making her a rare god creating goddess, Junko never uses her power to make someone fully divine but makes people’s powers divine like her anger. Junko is a divine spirit fueled by divine anger but she isn’t an animal her tactics are straight forward but she can be resonated with and eventually calms down.
It should be noted that her purification of Clownpiece made a simple hell fairy, about as strong as the average fairy at most, into a presence rivalling even Reimu and Marisa in raw strength, and both Touhou protagonists have actively beaten actual gods before. Clown only lost against Reimu, who has the power to become intangible and has infinite destructive power with homing bullets, and Marisa, the magician trained by *the* great vengeful spirit who rivals Touhou's equivalent of Satan herself in magical strength and even overpowers Shinki in many ways. Junko is strong.

Hello, I come again to offer my insight into this metal cover. This is a breakdown of the lyrics, as well as providing backstory to one of Touhou’s deeply tragic characters. The divine spirit of pure fury, Nameless Being, Junko. All of what I write is taken from the official Touhou wiki as well as a bit of fan material, since much of Touhou’s popularity and content is generated by the fandom. (Warning! Long post incoming!) (edit: spelling)
So for some much needed background, Junko’s story is based on both a historical Chinese narrative and legend. In history she was known as Xuán Qī, but was nicknamed Chún Hú (lit “Pure Fox” and alternate spelling of Junko). She was married to the leader of the Xia Dynasty, Hòu Kuí and both had a son together, Bó Fēng. Hòu Yì, the Lord Archer, enters to take over the empire and exiles Hòu Kuí, kills Bó Fēng, and forced Xuán Qī into marriage. Enraged and desiring revenge, she conspired to kill the tyrant with Hòu Yì's minister, Hán Zhuó.There is also Hòu Yì in legends, where he saved the world by shooting down 9 of the 10 suns. In ancient China, one week was considered 10 days and with it there were 10 suns each, but on one day all 10 sons rose at the same time, threatening to burn all life on earth. It was also here where he was known to be the husband of Chang’e, Moon Goddess who drank the Hourai Elixir that Hòu Yì brought back which granted immortality and floated away to the moon.
Touhou combines both stories into one but there are many omissions and discrepancies. Such as no mention of Hòu Kuí or Hán Zhuó, and even changing the relation of Bó Fēng into Hòu Yì’s son, rather than Hòu Kuí's. Thus making the murder of Bó Fēng filicide.
And so, the story goes as follows…
Chapter I: Viloma
It was the dead of night, the moon rose full to shine it’s pale light across the land. In the far corner of the empire was a small villa, home to the beloved young prince. He was so innocent, playing with his toys past his bedtime even though he risked his mother scolding him. But he had heard the news, his father would be returning from his long journey to find and meet the great lunar sage. He could not contain his excitement this fateful night, as it has been an age since he last saw his beloved father. It was when the moon rose at its highest when he returned, the young prince saw his shadow and turned way to be reunited. And it was at its highest that tragedy struck, when the walls were stained in red.
The emperor had slain his own child to further fuel his own ambition, as he could never be content with ruling the earthly world, but desired a place higher than the heavens where the divine beings reside. For he was promised that if he were to take the hand of his beloved Goddess, he would ascend and take his rightful place. All he needed was to gift her the drink of immortality… and do away with his old life, with such a meager price, nothing could be more simple he thought. All he had to do was kill one defenseless child…
Horror lays before my eyes
My blooded hands tremble in fright
They’ve taken the light and joy from my life
My son’s life paid in the blood of your kind
The Empress had returned later that night, the dead was done. Shock and horror was shown all over her face, there lay the still warm body of her son, an arrow deep into his heart. There was no question in her mind who had him slain, for an arrow to strike so true and so precise means there was only one man. She had known the truth, she had known his ambitions, and yet to believe that it would all lead to this, she could never have known.
The moon shines its light on this quiet night
A remembrance of a terrifying crime
As I raised my cries into the blackened sky
My despair and grief shall make me sanctified
The children of the moon shall feel my hate
Rage so pure, I am vengeance incarnate
The fury in my heart, I won’t forsake
Now your kind shall taste wrath immaculate
It was sadness and despair which had pierced her heart like the arrow to her son’s own. But then came rage… grief, hatred, vengeance… a fury so pure it burned away at her body. She would not just swear to kill him, but all those who could be implicit to the crime, those who call themselves divine shall know her pain a thousand times. She screamed that she would become vengeance, to become a divine hate, she would forsake everything she was in the name of her own fury.
Chapter II: Confrontation
It would not be long before she would have her chance, before the Emperor could return to his Goddess, she had chased him down to a corner of his palace. There he now faced the unbridled might of a The Fury. But he was the greatest archer in all the land, he who saved the world from the might of 10 burning skies. To him she was no different than the monsters he slew many times before, the irony lost upon him. Arrow after arrow he flung with great power, but not a single one could even tear past the fabric of her robes, before he knew it the battle was over just as it started. In a single instance, before he could let loose his last arrow. The Fury closed the distance with a blink of an eye.
“What did you feel when you butchered my son?”
She uttered coldly, he could not answer with the piercing of her claws through his lungs.
“When my tears flowed into his puddle of blood?”
All he could respond back was a cough, the taste of iron filling his mouth. The pain was agonizing as she slowly drove deeper into his chest, her grip tearing through his flesh.
“Taking your life won’t be enough”
He felt his strength leaving him. His last thoughts were questioning how this could have happened? Should he have killed her first? Was he tricked by his Goddess? Is her rage truly so unfathomable?
“But it will be the start of what must be done”
He could not hear the last words. For in his mad quest to reach the divine, he would spend an eternity in the burning blazes.
As I savor the sound of your final sigh
My eyes lock with yours as it turns to white
And while the world knows that my act is justified
I find vengeance to be a sweet delight
It was done, vengeance was had. The Emperor and murderer of her beloved son was no more. She took a great joy in his death and greater joy watching him fade away as she embraced one last time, savoring the warm sensation of his blood on her hands. It was swift, merciless, and absolutely wondrous.
As I stand, the victor, over my mortal foe
My soul calms now that I’ve settled the score
But why does my shattered heart yearns to do much more?
My sights turn to a new foe to oppose
At last she pulled away leaving the corpse of her former husband to fall to the floor. A smile washes over her face as tears streamed down from her maddened red eyes. And yet, when the moment has passed and she stared down her once mortal enemy, what should have been her finest hour turned unsatisfactory. The Fury realized that it was not enough, it will never be enough. So long as his Goddess existed along with her kind, there will be no end to her grief.
Chapter III: Condemnation
Widow of my foe, I call you from below
My anger still grows, retribution I’ll uphold
It had been many years since that fateful day. The world had turned over a thousand times since she had declared war against the moon. Yet even now The Fury had not forgotten her purpose, the reason for continued existence. She must kill Chang’e. Alas, things are now not as simple as it was when she murder the Emperor.
Horror plagues my troubled mind
(They murdered my dear child)
Memories of the light of my life
(He had the sweetest smile)
I set my goals towards the moonlight
(Soon vengeance shall be mine)
Now begins the end for your kind
(Now innocence shall die)
The memory of long ago still burns bright within her soul, though the details have mudded with time. The life as pure hatred had caused her to lose sight of herself, even now she can’t remember why she started this war, or even her true name… All she has left is the burning feeling of loss deep in her heart. Though she knows not what the pain means anymore, the end goal is still the same.
The weakest of all, I’ll uplift and purify
The Sea of Tranquility I’ll fill with life
And as your kind flees amidst the rising strife
I’ll see to it that by my hands you will die
My anger and rage, now refined and purified
Now extends to all of your damned kind
And once I am done with you, I shall seal their fate
They shall know naught but my divine hate
In her latest hour she would not strike alone. For in a pact made with a Goddess of Three Hells, who desires the same vengeance as her, The Fury now has an army to strike the lunar capital. With her powers to purify she granted them overflowing life, the very force that the Lunarians are weak against. They could do not against the swarm, not without risking their own lives. And so they flee in terror, but it would not be for long. It does not matter if the innocent shall die from her wrath, for what was taken away from her, nothing shall be spared. And Chang’e will watch it all.
This is the divine justice, this is anger and wrath made a manifest, this was her grief and despair brought forth in return, She would be called The Fury, the Great Invader. She would give one name in return.
Junko
There are times when the grief overtakes her once more. She returns to a lonely grave with its description time faded. Littered were offerings of a child’s belongings, and long into the days and nights she would sit here. She could not remember this child’s face, their name, nor could she remember their death. Yet the tears would flow all the same. All that remained here where faded and bloodied memories… and a broken heart for two.
This is such an amazingly creative way to explain the story to those unfamiliar with Touhou. I love how you made your story newcomer-friendly while still being accurate to canon and the presentation in the song. Not to mention, you're an amazing writer - it was very engaging, even to somebody familiar with the story already. Bravo!
Amazing explanation. I would only add one clarification about her plan to strike at the Lunarians, though: The reason why the fairies' "overflowing life" is so dangerous to the Lunarians is because they are "pure" existences to which the environment and life energy of Earth and its inhabitants are "impure" and thus incredibly toxic to them. Even something as seemingly innocuous as gaining immortality through drinking the Hourai Elixir "taints" the drinker with the concept of death by the very absence of said concept from them (yes, it's weird metaphysics).
On a side note, there is an additional element of horror to Junko's current state of existence. She originally purified herself into a pure incarnation of rage, hatred and resentment to fulfill her revenge against her son's murderer, yet when that was achieved, she found that the hatred in her soul still burns and turned her attentions to Chang'e (and by proxy, the Lunarians). And that makes sense; having reduced herself to nothing but hate and resentment, she literally cannot do anything but act upon that emotion.
So one shudders to imagine what would happen if she does manage to murder Chang'e after exterminating the Lunarians to make her suffer; in all likelihood, the cycle would repeat and she would be compelled by her own fathomless hatred to find something else to "avenge" herself upon. Who would be her next target? The people of her country, perceiving them to have "failed" her son by "allowing" his murder? And after genociding them, would she then turn to neighboring countries, driven by similarly perceived connections to her son's murder?
And when Earth is just a sterile wasteland, would she go out to the rest of the universe to seek the next inhabited planet, with the intent on "punishing them" as well? Would burning the entirety of the universe to ashes finally bring her peace, or would she stand alone in the lifeless void, tormented by an all-consuming hatred that she can no longer fulfill? Is she even capable of committing suicide at this point? Would it even change anything? Is it possible for her to commit the ultimate suicide and erase her existence completely?
Really, when you think about it, Junko's existence is arguably one where she's doomed to inevitable misery.
BTW, you have a few typos and the occasional missing word, like misspelling "complicit" as "implicit", but nothing that impeded understanding of what you intended (unless the reader is has a low grasp on English).
I have no idea how you are able to write such a creative take of a song the same day it dropped. Still I find it quite fascinating. Well done!

The reason i think that is, is because at some part of herself, she cannot forget here child, no matter how low that impurity is, it cannot be removed, and the only reason she has any concept of self left.

Yeah that’s a loose summary of Junko’s motivation to declare war on the Lunarians(the moon people)
Lunarians are jerks. In fact they are actual guys responsible for youkai nature of being malevolent towards humanity. So, Lunarians are the source of sufferings for many.
From what I gather, she's not so much evil as she has become a force of nature that is incapable of feeling any emotion that isn't resentment, with the Lunarians (and Chang'e in particular) being the *current* focus for said emotion after she killed her son's murderer. You can no more demand that she stop seeking the extermination of the Lunarians than you can demand a typhoon to stop wrecking your homeland with tree-ripping winds and coast-drowning high waves.
You're right on the money here. Junko's son was killed by the lunarians, a race of moon rabbits (hence why the person she kills has rabbit ears), and she swore vengeance against the Lunarians entirely.
The Lunarians are also just terrible in general, so it's completely justified.

When I heard you were doing a cover of Pure Furies, I knew it would be godly, but this surpassed my expectations in every way! I love the story you wrote for the song, the prose is amazing, and the art is great!! 1. The belief of purity (purity in soul from the cycle of life and death, thus making them immortal. Life is considered "impure" thus Earth is an impure place that goes against the Lunarians' beliefs of purity)
2. The belief of purity (as mentioned above) makes Lunarians seemingly racist and xenophobic to humanity on Earth (although, as shown with the Watatsuki sisters, they're not as racist as the fandom portrays them to be.)
3. Due to their racist tendencies, It was implied in obscure lore that the higher echelons of Lunarian society developed various plans to eradicate the Earth of all impure life (mass genocide) so that they will resettle the Earth as a pure, lifeless, yet still inhabited world.

But every so often, she still feels these pangs of utter despair and sorrow, and she finds herself visiting a certain grave that has long since been worn and eroded by time. She then begins to cry for days on end, not knowing why or for who she's crying. But these emotions come all the same.
Junko is a deeply tragic character, and is one of two characters I know of that is the purest embodiment of the phrase "Revenge is a poison that kills two people." Who's the other? Ai Enma, the Hell Girl.

The story is great, and the art is incredible, but by god are the lyrics the absolute peak. Some of the rhymes are fantastic, like the hate/incarnate/immaculate in the first part is great.
But the part that's stuck in my head since hearing it is "Widow of my foe, I call to you from below", because holy shit does that line slap. Plus, it has multiple meanings, outside the story of Junko, since "From Below" could also refer to hell in western culture, giving off the vibes of someone having a grudge strong enough they're coming for round two from beyond the grave. And "Widow of my foe" in general is chilling when spoken by someone full of rage since it's implying they're coming after not just the person that wronged them but everyone else. Though within the context of the story it's because Chang'e was responsible as well, but separate from the story it's a line that hits hard as fell.
Overall, absolute 11/10 banger, really reminds me why my favorite genre of music is Touhou.

Be VERY scared of the angry mom. She killed Houyi of all people, the man who shot down 9 of the 10 Jinwu’s, AKA, sun birds (The 3 Legged Golden Crow)! Basically, each of his arrows are capable of destroying the sun… Junko sure is scary…
Also, sadly, she will never fully complete her revenge against Chang’E, since she has drunk the Hourei Elixer, making them quite literally impossible to kill.
Also also, Utsuho gaining her sun god powers is probably a direct result of Houyi killing 9/10 Jinwu’s. Since Kanako basically fed Utsuho the eyeball containing all the power of a Jinwu (The Eye of Yatagarasu). This probably also means that 1 of the 9 Jinwu’s Houyi killed was Yatagarasu. This makes Junko even scarier, because Utsuho is one of the stronger characters, and Junko killed a man capable of killing Utsuho with a single arrow.
Now for a fun and funny Touhou fact. The lunarians living on the moon got angry when they found the American flag planted on the moon, and took it as a decoration of war. So canonically the US is basically at war with the Lunarians (AKA Space China). Although, funny enough, the US probably isn’t aware that the Lunarians exist, so it’s a very one sided war declaration (Albeit, I find it funny to think that the US does in fact know. And I choose to have this be my head cannon, because the thought of NASA secretly battling it out with the Lunarians is hilarious to me)
Also, a funny hell fairy named Clownpiece saw the American flag on the moon, thought it looked cool, and now she wears the star spangled banner as an outfit lol. (I think she also likes that it makes the Lunarians angry, but I forget lol)

@47syorha52 That’d be impossible, since the Hourei Elixir literally separates the soul from reality itself, making one truly immortal. Every character that’s drank the Hourei Elixir is truly unkillable and immortal in the truest way possible, with no way to kill them at all, as their very essence of existence is completely separated from reality itself. So no matter what you ‘do’ to the body you see infront of you, a new body will only appear in the next moment completely unharmed.
Touhou powers usually do exactly what they say they do, with no defined limitations. And the Hourei Elixer takes precedence over even other hax like powers. As even Yuyuko has stated that her power of straight up death is incapable of killing the likes of Mokou and Kaguya. (And being separated from reality means their immortality transcends space and time, so no time travel shenanigans would work either)
In terms of power, I have no doubt that Junko would absolutely thrash Chang E’, but there’s no chance of killing them, as there isn’t a single power in Touhou capable of breaking the neutronium clad rule of True Immortality granted by the Hourei Elixer.

@ Then my other point I’ve been saving, is that the Hourei Elixir IS also Erin’s medicine, not only that but it’s her Magnum Opus. And even more, it’s essentially the distilled essence of Kaguya’s power, the power of Eternity, the ability to be untouched by time. So even if you try to rewind the drinker back to the point before they drank the elixir, they are Eternal, and thus time can’t affect them. So that’d be two points lol. The Hourai Elixer does exactly what it says it does, it makes it impossible to die, even if you want to.
This is getting fairly abstract lol, but your point is a good one. Being able to ignore Reimu’s power is definitely a solid one, but in the end the Hourai Elixir just has everything going for it.

Great video I've been waiting this for so long. My only criticism is that I wish it was uploaded during the mooncake festival because it's very fitting that you upload a song about chang'e nemesis in a holiday where she ascended to the moon. But than again it's just nitpick so don't think about it that much. Overall great video

If you think about it, Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom was just about trying to convince an inquisitor to not exterminatus a world out of boredom because the chaos cultists already left it.
Not out of boredom per se, more out of vengeance. To put it bluntly it's exterminatusing a planet because one chaos cultist killed your kid (that one chaos cultist is dead, dead as hell)
The issue there is that the imperium are such shits that I'm pretty sure exterminatus-ing a planet because it *previously* had chaos cultists on it is considered well within acceptable bounds of behaviour for inquisitors

I hereby called upon the touhou fan to explain the context of this song cause i pretty sure i am slightly confuse at the moment
Junko is angry/vengeful because her son was murdered by the husband of the moon goddess Chang'e.
She possesses the power to "purify anything", which isn't as simple as it sounds. The power lets her strengthen one aspect of something by removing or reducing other aspects of the thing (similar to purifying metals).
She used this power on herself, purifying herself into a divine spirit of hatred and rage even sacrificing her name in the process (Junko is one of the few characters in the series to not have a last name, she almost certainly would have had one before this (I think)).
After killing the husband of Chang'e she turns her hatred towards Chang'e and the lunarian people on the moon (who are all kinda awful tbh).
The lunarians have achieved a form of immortality by completely seperating themselves from the concepts of life and death, turning the moon into a "pure realm" where nothing is born and nothing dies. This does mean however that their immortality is reliant on them not coming into contact with anything heavily tied to either concept (somewhat hilariously this means a new born baby would be highly toxic to the lunarians, you could probably kill one, or at least cancel their immortality, by just making them touch a baby).
In the game Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom, Junko teams up with the goddess of Hell, Hecatia Lapislazuli, to invade the moon and kill the lunarians. Junko uses her power to supercharge a bunch of fairies with life energy and use them as an army to bring life to the moon, in doing so cancelling the immortality of the lunarians and poisoning them with life, thus also bringing death. This forced the lunarians to flee to the dream world to escape from Junko. The Lunarians then decided they would have to relocate, and would you look at that Gensokyo (the home of the rest of Touhou) looks mighty suitable, only one problem, it's still full of that pesky thing called life... the Lunarians deem this a fixable problem and set out to invade Gensokyo.
The player characters are not strong enough to actually beat the lunarians, but don't share their weakness to Junko's strategy, so are forced to go stop Junko so the Lunarians don't need to invade Gensokyo any more.
The only context you need to understand the song is that Junko, the main character here, had her son killed by the Lunarians, the people of the moon with rabbit ears. This enraged her, and she swore vengeance against the Lunarians. The explanation above does a great job delving into more of the lore behind it.

They really don’t, that’s Yorihime’s ability specifically and we never see the two fight.
While Junko is a terrifyingly powerful foe, even more so than Yukari, it was Purification ability used on Clownpierce(An *impure* fairy) that cause the Lunarians to nope the fuck out because they *really* cannot deal with opponents that abuse impurities. Like SSiB!Reimu forced Yorihime to admit a draw despite being horribly outclassed at the time simply because she summoned a God that unleashes impurities.

It’s about Junko, a character from Touhou. Like with Shinmyoumaru and Okuu.
The basic jist is that the archer shot down the suns (old Chinese myth) and one of them assumedly killed her son in the crossfire. So she took revenge by killing him, but in the process became a human-shaped being of pure resentment, essentially a daemon
TL;DR Chang'e's husband killed her child.
Her ability is to purify things, which made her purifying her own grudge, leaving behind only pure rage against Chang'e
As to why she's killing moon people (lunarians), the person who killed her son was the husband of Chang'e, the moon goddess.

That was awesome, but~ wouldn't trying to pull off Astarte's power armour made for women to use as idols somehow to represent each 9 loyal Legions which are now chapters and Chaos Space Marine Legions too? I ask because you did one with a Ork by doing TG. So I don't see a reason to find some method similar to that, would too difficult to pull of right?
