One of the greatest ever SNL sketches. Really brilliant. Flipped the “fish out of water” comedy tradition and turned it completely on its head, and found the humor in the character being a fish completely *in* water. Don’t think I’ve ever seen that done so well in comedy. It’s also one the handful of great SNL skits that promote pure racial harmony. Love it.
The writing is also fantastic. During their whole discussion, they never explicitly mentioned ethnicity as a reason for why John's character was nervous to meet her family. It was always "they might not like me" or "I'm a nerd from the Midwest." The ethnic differences are certainly implied, but as they interact with the music and the side characters, we find that the ethnic differences were truly never the issue being discussed.
The greatest thing about this skit is that John's character is 100% white. He doesn't try to sound black. He doesn't attempt to use street slang. But at the same time, he has a deep knowledge and respect for black culture. And this respect allows him to comfortably engage black people as PEOPLE while being the white man that he is. Damn I wish real life was like this!
I think part of the reason why it works so well is because some of these things like church and greens are just Southern things. I'm white, but I'm familiar with some stuff just because it's sort of regional. Plus, everybody likes the Cha Cha Slide, so it automatically made the skit fun for everyone. :)
"And this respect allows him to comfortably engage black people as PEOPLE while being the white man that he is. Damn I wish real life was like this!" With all due respect you’re blind and brainwashed. I think one of the funniest parts of this sketch is that everyone unilaterally agreed upon a specific dance move heretofore known as 'Beyonce 1' and 'Beyonce 2'
extra funny because in every group I've ever been in no one can agree on what the correct moves are for 'Charlie Brown' - different everywhere I've been
Kelsey Schoenbaum yeah I watch this over and over just to watch the background dancers take on the dance. Это самое замечательное достижение. Понимание языка во многом связано с пониманием культуры, лежащей в его основе. Это очень сложно. Вы должны обладать способностью впитывать нюансы. Это большая редкость.
The best part of this skit is, he wasn’t nervous about being the only white person there, and she wasn’t concerned about him “fitting in” in a “black” sense. It’s more, “I don’t really know your family” nervousness. The “race” angle , though there… isn’t. Love this skit.
To me that's the real charm of the skit - that you think it's going to be about him being the only white guy there and it has NOTHING to do with the humor - nobody else even remarks on it, they all just accept that he's there. The way the world should be!
Britt G. Howard University is a historically black college in Washington DC and Kappa Alpha Psi is a black fraternity so it’s funny that John, a white man, was in this fraternity at Howard.
For the people who don’t get the more subtle “black” things outside of him knowing the cha cha. -He’s a member of a BGLO (black frat) -He went to an HBCU and knows the chant “HU; U know!” -He says the phrase “on punishment” -He plays spades -Power -“Pray on it” -“‘Preciate you” - The church fan - Addressing an elder by putting “miss” in front of the name, “Hey Miss Daley”
I think one of the funniest parts of this sketch is that everyone unilaterally agreed upon a specific dance move heretofore known as 'Beyonce 1' and 'Beyonce 2'
I know how to play spades and I'm white ...my parents taught me and I also use the phrase pray on it(probably because of my religious background but I digress)...so this was interesting to see a different perspective the other things mentioned tho I've never done so nice to be informed thanks.

Wishing this was our real world. Where each of us invests in another's culture embracing it and respecting it. The writers are definitely on point. Love it.
Yvette A., I Wish it was the way this world was, too!! Btw, I'm white, but was raised up among black people my whole life. I've always figured, LIFE is hard enough, with out hating people because the color of their skin may be different from mine. People are JUST PEOPLE.
@@KeepOnRecord Very few white guys are members of that frat (it's a traditionally Black fraternity), and though there are people who aren't black at Howard U, it is a HBCU (a historically Black college or university) so a majority of students and graduates are African-American.
I worked at House of Blues and did almost every Gospel Brunch for 9 years straight. I'd be so tired from bartending Sat p.m. and being back at 8 am to set up, but I heard that phrase for the silliest things and would turn my head. "Well, my 25 year old daughter thinks she's grown enough to move out!" "Well, Giiiiiiirl! I'ma pray on it for you!"
Whats funny is that if you look at the dude on the end at the Left side at 1:19, he accidentally drops his church fans while stirring the grits and almost panics.
I can never get enough of this beautiful sketch. It is funny and heartwarming because it is so respectful to Black Culture. That is rare. Thank you #SNL.
Sorry in advanced if this is an ignorant question but I was just wondering what was necessarily Black Culture about about the sketch? I only ask because I related to like 90% of what was going on and I'm white as a ghost lol Again, i hope my question wasn't disrespectful in any way, just genuinely curious
Cyber Saiyan - Well, I think a lot of this stuff relates specifically to black folks, but that doesn't mean that you can't relate to some of it. If you grew up in the south, then a lot of this will seem familiar to you, no matter your race.
Cyber Saiyan Cha Cha slide said some obviously stereotypically black things, John produces a mixtape for a guy, and he says he went to Howard, which is an HBCU.
@@CyberSaiyan13 You don't have to be black to experience or grow up in black culture just like you don't have to be white to experience white culture. The adjective that goes behind "culture" is just a handy way of saying that it's the culture belongs to most people of that group or originated from them.
When I say this is the blackest SNL skit I have seen in my life...that is a compliment!!! Omg!! I wanna know who was in the writers room because this was too much 😂😂😂
@@jvgreendarmok With the vital input of Mulaney who went to school in the DMV and with his keen eye, has an affinity for p/u the quirks of diff communities. In this case, the black experience is executed w/o predjudice. And its hella funny!!

You seen the "Take me back" sketch? Ego's in close up for half of it and (while they don't light her like she deserves) she looks *gorgeous*. It's also a fucking hilarious sketch and Ego's expressions are amazing.

After his performance at the party I can only imagine their night would have ended in fireworks haha. But yes, I also was deeply invested in their relationship, and am really glad they never made her seem uncomfortable or alienated from her own family, which was the other way this sketch could have gone
The really funny part of this sketch is the dancers. They are the typical dancers you see doing the slide. You've got the one doing too much (lady in black). The one just having a good time (lady in blue). The somewhat conservative one who starts off slow, but really gets into it by the end (lady in green). The guy with the facial expressions (guy with no tie). Somewhat older businessman who can still slide (guy with the tie. And they're always someone who is doing the wrong move at the wrong time (the auntie).

If ironing boards are your thing...
Yes! I was just about to comment on how she's killing the cha cha
she is having more fun than I have ever had in my entire life
I prefer the woman in the blue dress.
Now you got me looking at her the whole video lol
Why aren’t these the actual steps to the cha cha slide.... like I’m down
I'm definitely passing out church fans and getting the dj to just call random stuff at mama's birthday party in February 😂😂😂
Funky fox now y'all 😜
🤣
But it makes it funny.
My favorite step is- "Beyonce 1" & "Beyonce 2"!
(Also- "Shoot them Dice" & "Roll them Sevens") 😁 👍💃
I am so impressed with every background actor in this scene. They make this whole sketch so much better.
They're seriously into it lol
One of my favorite parts
Especially the lady in the black dress lol
Especially the lively little lady on front row right.
This is hilarious 😂😂
The best part of this skit is, he wasn’t nervous about being the only white person there, and she wasn’t concerned about him “fitting in” in a “black” sense. It’s more, “I don’t really know your family” nervousness. The “race” angle , though there… isn’t. Love this skit.
To me that's the real charm of the skit - that you think it's going to be about him being the only white guy there and it has NOTHING to do with the humor - nobody else even remarks on it, they all just accept that he's there. The way the world should be!
When he pulled out the extra church fan. I died 😂☠😂
peteroc4 That goofy look on his face when he’s waving it too cracks me up
That means he’s a good boyfriend.. ;-)
I cracked up on the 1st fan he pulled out
I’m glad they’re using Ego, she deserves more screen time
Chris G. truly. i really like her
Who
Timothy Alexzander Carthan II ; the girlfriend
Yeah bro, she's as funny and memorable as Sasheer Zamata..
John Mulaneys character being a Kappa at Howard killed me
I actually didn't get it😅 Explain?
Britt G. Howard University is a historically black college in Washington DC and Kappa Alpha Psi is a black fraternity so it’s funny that John, a white man, was in this fraternity at Howard.
@@auti9401 Hahaha thanks for the explanation, that's hilarious
U knowwwwwww
Nupe! Who woulda thunk!
this skit is perfection. kenan sounds amazing, john and ego are great, and the extras look like their having the time of their lives
For the people who don’t get the more subtle “black” things outside of him knowing the cha cha.
-He’s a member of a BGLO (black frat)
-He went to an HBCU and knows the chant “HU; U know!”
-He says the phrase “on punishment”
-He plays spades
-Power
-“Pray on it”
-“‘Preciate you”
- The church fan
- Addressing an elder by putting “miss” in front of the name, “Hey Miss Daley”
did you just copy the exact comment with 11k likes lol
I think one of the funniest parts of this sketch is that everyone unilaterally agreed upon a specific dance move heretofore known as 'Beyonce 1' and 'Beyonce 2'
I’m Australian so that is helpful
@@teenindustry same!
I know how to play spades and I'm white ...my parents taught me and I also use the phrase pray on it(probably because of my religious background but I digress)...so this was interesting to see a different perspective the other things mentioned tho I've never done so nice to be informed thanks.
You know if they ever break up her friends and family are going to be like “But can we keep Daniel? 🥺”
Edit: Thanks for all the likes guys, now I get to tell my mom I’m famous!
Heck, they'll be the reason they get back together. Lol
😆
They'll create an elaborate plan to get them together
@@mangana215 I would watch the shit out of that romcom.
Trueeee😂
Wishing this was our real world. Where each of us invests in another's culture embracing it and respecting it. The writers are definitely on point. Love it.
Yvette A., I Wish it was the way this world was, too!! Btw, I'm white, but was raised up among black people my whole life. I've always figured, LIFE is hard enough, with out hating people because the color of their skin may be different from mine. People are JUST PEOPLE.
I completely agree with this statement only if we could live in a world where it was like that

Sigh of relief when the sketch ended on a high note. Much more pleasant watching skits where everyone is nice to each other 😄
"Kappa Alpha Psi at Howard University" I'm done 😂😂😂😂😂😭 Mulaney killed this sketch
I didn't get the reference. What was it?
KeepOnRecord Kappa Alpha Psi is a popular historically black fraternity and Howard University is a prestigious historically black university.
@@KeepOnRecord Very few white guys are members of that frat (it's a traditionally Black fraternity), and though there are people who aren't black at Howard U, it is a HBCU (a historically Black college or university) so a majority of students and graduates are African-American.
That part was golden, done soo well🤣🤣🤣
"You KNOW!" 😂😂😂
every time Kenan says: „cha cha now y'all!“ I feel like everything is alright in the world
Brings me back to middle school dances man
Feels good. I will definitely be in the floor for the cha cha slide.
Him repeatedly saying it is what killed me.
You got that right! 😆 awesome DJ vibes there!
Pick one party goer, any, watch only them the entire time, repeat: pure gold.
Will do lol
Right? The man behind John on the right makes the best dance faces lol
The guy who drops the fan 🤣. Spends time trying to reach for it
Will do.
OMG! You're right! Thanks for the tip! It gets funnier the more you watch it!
I love his face when he dances, never changes expression and knows all the steps.
3:14 "well I'm gonna pray on it" 😂 my favorite part
That part was so funny!!!!
"It's a damn shame" too Southern 😂
😂😆👍🏾🙏🏾
I worked at House of Blues and did almost every Gospel Brunch for 9 years straight. I'd be so tired from bartending Sat p.m. and being back at 8 am to set up, but I heard that phrase for the silliest things and would turn my head. "Well, my 25 year old daughter thinks she's grown enough to move out!" "Well, Giiiiiiirl! I'ma pray on it for you!"
I’m not sure anyone but Mulaney could have pulled this off so well.
DravenGal Justin Timberlake

“Now pull out that Church fan !”
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
The fact that he grew up so, so Christian makes this infinitely better~
I lost it at that part😂 he whipped out that fan quicker than any church auntie
I just noticed that the fans has MLK and Jesus on them. Great detail.
Need. Church. Fan. Emoji. Now.
Whats funny is that if you look at the dude on the end at the Left side at 1:19, he accidentally drops his church fans while stirring the grits and almost panics.
I’m mixed race, and I can totally see my Dad (white) being like this when he met my Mom’s family for the first time.
I can never get enough of this beautiful sketch. It is funny and heartwarming because it is so respectful to Black Culture. That is rare. Thank you #SNL.
Sorry in advanced if this is an ignorant question but I was just wondering what was necessarily Black Culture about about the sketch? I only ask because I related to like 90% of what was going on and I'm white as a ghost lol
Again, i hope my question wasn't disrespectful in any way, just genuinely curious
Cyber Saiyan - Well, I think a lot of this stuff relates specifically to black folks, but that doesn't mean that you can't relate to some of it. If you grew up in the south, then a lot of this will seem familiar to you, no matter your race.
This sketch is a great argument for diversity in the writers' room
Cyber Saiyan Cha Cha slide said some obviously stereotypically black things, John produces a mixtape for a guy, and he says he went to Howard, which is an HBCU.
@@CyberSaiyan13 You don't have to be black to experience or grow up in black culture just like you don't have to be white to experience white culture. The adjective that goes behind "culture" is just a handy way of saying that it's the culture belongs to most people of that group or originated from them.
When I say this is the blackest SNL skit I have seen in my life...that is a compliment!!! Omg!! I wanna know who was in the writers room because this was too much 😂😂😂
John Mulaney wrote this sketch
Galaxy Lucia yes they were on Point! One of SNLs best skits ever!

I came here just to comment on blue dress 😍🥰
“Well I’m going to pray on it”! That part took me out! Perfect blend of comedy!!
I love how sweet and clever this skit was written and produced LIVE!
