This moment is my favorite through all HL series, it breaks the fantasy a little bit and puts you down to a real position of needing help and being just one more in a fight but however it doesnt take your importance out of the fight, by the contrary it shows how skilled you are as Gordon to the point of being on the same level of the Vortigauns really made you feel like you were there and danger is just your job winch you are really good at
The only moment in halo that made me feel this way was in the first halo when you blow up the pillar of autumn and go through a whole warthog section where all the covenant aliens are running away
Try halo CE havoc mod, music added in places it makes it insane, the final level the maw even has a moment where everything they ear is you is playing while you Johnson and a spartan(I assume it's Linda 058) are mowing down an army of covenant elites and hunters
Ikr? This is one of, if not my most favorite moments in my time gaming. The single tunnel three lights got me excited for a battle, I was kind of disappointed but relieved that I saw the Vortigaunts... then Vortal Combat kicked in, all tunnels lit up with three lights and I got the fight I wanted. Best few minutes of my life and possibly the best sequence of events anyone could have done in this situation.
Yep, they have a few interesting execution animations if an Antlion gets too close. They also have a couple for zombies as well, similar to Alyx in EP1.
My favorite part about this scene by far is the fact that you dont even have to fight. The vortigaunts can pretty much solo all the antlions on their own, as mentioned in the dev commentary. Really goes to show their true potential and that they're far from weak.
Episode 2 has so many great combat encounters, but I think the music makes this my favourite. (Also the absolute WTF moment of seeing three lights everywhere)
I’ve always loved the relationships the Vorts share with the human rebels. That one duo I think in Half Life 2 one of the humans and Vorts they seem to have an almost sitcom like relationship which is hilarious, I think they modify your vehicle if I remember correctly but they bicker but clearly are friends
Just remember that you were destroying these guys at one point. And now you are fighting alongside with them, in a battle that is truly badass. It was so ingenious to have you fight with them after so long fighting against them.
It was 2007, I was on my computer playing episode 2 being watched by a friend who just burned me a copy of both expansions. The music started to kick in and I was transported back to "we got hostiles" from HL1 and the dope semi-edm track that accompanied it. I blasted through them, and paused the game as I turned to my friend: "I fucking love half life" 12 years later, we double teamed his wife.
1:15 when that music came on i was like AW SHIT FUCK YES i even had to pause because of THE ADRENLINE IN MY VEINS WERE PUMPING AND I WAS GETTING GOOSEBUMPS
The developer commentary notes that Griggs and Shekley were supposed to be killed pretty quickly within this fight but were made stronger because players were confused on how to fight all the antlions without any guidance, and I'm so incredibly glad they weren't. Throughout the series civilians and allies that aren't plot relevant are constantly treated like cannon fodder or just a comedic way to introduce that a new enemy will attack you, and it gets so dull and repetitive. I'm supposed to be these peoples messiah-like hero and they're constantly shown to contribute nothing to my goals aside from opening a door for me or giving an informative dying spasm when I arrive, and Griggs and Shekley are an awesome break from this. Two random rebels that don't even have unique models being shown to have their own dynamic, jobs, tactics, and interests randomly running into Gordon Freeman and holding their own, side-by-side with you, as an equal. Working alongside rebels that do more than hand medkits and stand in your way makes this my favourite segment of the entire series, and ironically completely steal the show from the vortigaunt for me (The entire point of this battle in the first place is to make you excited to fight with vortigaunts)
I hadnt played Episode 2 in over a decade, and replaying this segment recently was absolutely THRILLING. When that music by Kelly Bailey kicks in and youre pushed to your limits with Antlions flying everywhere, ouuff. I havent felt something like that in a video game for a long long time
One thing that I think is actually kind of moving about this scene is that this is the first time that we ever actually physically fight alongside the vortigaunts instead of against them. There’s a particular line one of them has - “it is good now that we fight together” - which I didn’t previously realise the significance of. It’s also interesting to note that when we fight them in Half-Life/Black Mesa they aren’t nearly as aggressive or brutal as they are here. I wonder if it’s because they’re no longer enslaved and actually fighting for something they believe in.
What about the 2 times you had to run away from those massive things in half life black mesa their name escapes me at the moment, the 2nd encounter was quite insane, you literally had one oft hose things just blow his way through a solid truck with a massive propane tank accompanied by awesome music then the 3rd encounter would be a run for your life situation as dozens of them were straight up hunting you down@@djk1288
Omg this part in the game.... I was shooting at the antlions, but there was so much chaos all around. And at one point I stopped and just stood there for 5 seconds looking around and ask myself ,,WHAT THE HELL IS HAPPENING" whle antlions jumping and flying above me
Episode 2 truly is a masterpiece. Along with Opposing Force, it's my favorite HL games, and that's saying a lot, since all Half Life games are perfection for me.

Definitely. The waves of Antlions leading up to this final assault already had me on edge, so when the lights all came on, I was making sure none of them got through
I LOVE how half life always mixed the serious with the goofy in such a cool way when those vortgaunts jump down w their goofy model any gamer may feel well this is silly then that music kicks in and they start whooping some ass and you remember why these games are the greatest
The Vortigaunts are coterminous, meaning that when Freeman was "coming at them with the crowbar" in Black Mesa, they also saw how in the future he would save them and they would become allies.
The two rebels and the Vorts in this small level had more personality and more memorable scenes then ANY of the main characters in the Disney Star Wars movies
I replayed it resently. And i think one of them, Sheckly or Griggs, in the midle of the final wave said "Did Freeman just smiled?" I remeber it clearly, but i didnt found anyone mentioning it and wiki dont say any of them said that. Weird...

Guess this fight shows us not only the skill of Freeman in Ep. 2, but in the original Half Life. The Vortigaunts are just wiping the floor with the antlions and making it look easy, a swarm of three lights scaring your human companions but seeming like nothing to the Vorts. And there you are, as freeman fighting along side them like its nothing. However these same creatures you fight next to you killed in droves in Half Life. Puts into perspective just how unkillable Freeman is.
This section made me cry afterwards just how GOOD it is. This isn't an army taking these aliens down. World is going to hell and the military has failed. Whos gonna save the day? A scientist in a suit with some guns and some chill ass aliens. THAT. Is badass.
It has been 1 minute without Hellmet. I have not been able to deploy teargas and ruin runs by shooting civilians, and it’s taking a toll on me. I pace around my room sweating, craving the thing I want, no, that I NEED the most. HELLMET. I hear the Nusian voices in my head, I can visualize their bold, yellow text, “CONTACT! CONTACT!” I need to satiate my need for door breaching. I sliently walk out of my room. My mother looks worried as I lean and slient walk. “Kris, WHAT are you doing?!” “ITS KASKA DAMNIT” She must be a disguised hostile. I grab my Leeman N24 or as they say, “P250” and pointed it at her. She ran away and called the cops. Damn… I didn’t have hardspeak… now I have to deal with the task force. No matter, I must camp in a room and wait for them to enter. I heard the multiple voices, rushing towards my room… I saw them, they were in blue and had guns. Someone must of converted them. As I wonder who converted them without warning, I got shot. I didn’t realize it was set to extremity. I should of ran double plate instead of sneakers… As I slump over, downed, vision blurred. I realized that I would have to restart to change my loadout. As the darkness creeps onto my vision, I would have to be dreaded with the gameover menu again.
Is it just me or does vortal combat give off a "We gotta defend this place until they stop coming. And kill everything that tries to enter!" Kinda vibe, which is what they were going for, and if you've ever listened to the Black Mesa: Questionable Ethics soundtrack 1 it gives off an offensive vibe which I seriously love! Yeah, this battle really has that vibe, enhanced by the awesome OST. QE1 from Black Mesa is also one of my favourite tracks. It's so markedly different from the rest of the soundtrack

Yep. They really dialed it up in EP2. It's my favourite of the Half-Life games, and it's only maybe a third of the length of HL2.

I absolutely love this part of Episode Two, the music just cranks it up to 11 and I'm jumpin and shooting like I'm playing Unreal Tournament.

The Vortigaunts are just wiping the floor with the antlions and making it look easy, a swarm of three lights scaring your human companions but seeming like nothing to the Vorts. And there you are, as freeman fighting along side them like its nothing. However these same creatures you fight next to you killed in droves in Half Life. Puts into perspective just how unkillable Freeman is.

This section made me cry afterwards just how GOOD it is. This isn't an army taking these aliens down. World is going to hell and the military has failed. Whos gonna save the day? A scientist in a suit with some guns and some chill ass aliens. THAT. Is badass.

It has been 1 minute without Hellmet. I have not been able to deploy teargas and ruin runs by shooting civilians, and it’s taking a toll on me. I pace around my room sweating, craving the thing I want, no, that I NEED the most. HELLMET. I hear the Nusian voices in my head, I can visualize their bold, yellow text, “CONTACT! CONTACT!” I need to satiate my need for door breaching. I sliently walk out of my room. My mother looks worried as I lean and slient walk. “Kris, WHAT are you doing?!” “ITS KASKA DAMNIT” She must be a disguised hostile. I grab my Leeman N24 or as they say, “P250” and pointed it at her. She ran away and called the cops. Damn… I didn’t have hardspeak… now I have to deal with the task force. No matter, I must camp in a room and wait for them to enter. I heard the multiple voices, rushing towards my room… I saw them, they were in blue and had guns. Someone must of converted them. As I wonder who converted them without warning, I got shot. I didn’t realize it was set to extremity. I should of ran double plate instead of sneakers… As I slump over, downed, vision blurred. I realized that I would have to restart to change my loadout. As the darkness creeps onto my vision, I would have to be dreaded with the gameover menu again.

Is it just me or does vortal combat give off a "We gotta defend this place until they stop coming. And kill everything that tries to enter!" Kinda vibe, which is what they were going for, and if you've ever listened to the Black Mesa: Questionable Ethics soundtrack 1 it gives off an offensive vibe which I seriously love!

Yeah, this battle really has that vibe, enhanced by the awesome OST. QE1 from Black Mesa is also one of my favourite tracks. It's so markedly different from the rest of the soundtrack
