I think David Bowie would make for a great addition to the playlist concept. His career went through so many different stages, and his discography is so unique, spanning from Glam Rock to Soul to Funk to Art Pop to Electronica etc. Plus I never felt like ChangesOne and ChangesTwo ever did him justice.

Personaly i really love His late 70's era and also His 90's and 2000's stuff, but that's just me

Back in fall 1967 I was a sophomore in High School. I lived in a North West Detroit suburb at the time We had a form for us to fill out the first week of school, voting for a band we would like to perform in our gym. I don't remember which band I voted for, I was't thinking as big as the student counsil was thinking about, I didn't think it was feasable. About a month later The band was announced, it was The Who! I was buying my ticket as soon as tickets went on sale, It was my very first concert, I was barely 15, in fact I was still 14 when the band was announced. The evening of the concert, I met up with some friends and we walked the almost 2 miles to the school, watched the concert which was The Frost, Amboy Dukes and then The Who and walked the 2 miles home. The Who played their full set even if it was a High School gym and closed with My Generation, then busted everything up, It was awesome!!! What a way to start a lifetime of concert going! The last concert I went to was Peter Frampton's good bye tour, which I am so glad it was before Covid came along! I hope to catch a few more great rockers while we're still alive once this covid thing is over and done with!

I always saw the stuttering in "My Generation" as a subtle way to poke at the establishment, especially "why don't you just f...ade away." We all know what they meant lol.

The stuttering on 'My Generation' is Roger Daltry implying he's about to say 'Fuck off.' But he instead says, 'Fadeaway.' It's a very British attitude when one feels their back is against the wall, so to speak.

Here's my favorite Who songs list
    My Generation
    Substitute
    I'm A Boy
    A Quick One
    Boris The Spider
I Can See For Miles (from Sell Out, their most fun album)
    Rael
Magic Bus (Meaty Beaty Big & Bouncy)
    Pinball Wizard
    Amazing Journey/ Sparks
    Summertime Blues (Live At Leeds)
    Won't Get Fooled Again
Love, Reign O'er Me (from the most serious album Quadeoohenia)
    Long Live Rock
    Who Are You (Keith's swansong)

  • @alkholos
    @alkholos 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

OK. I have some probably peculiar suggestions: "Cobwebs and Strange," "Boris the Spider," "A Quick One While He's Away" (that should never be off any list of the Who's greatest compositions), and of course, "Happy Jack." I was so happy to see the Who perform back in the day. I saw them play live at least a dozen times, and you always got your money's worth. They'd play 3 hours without a break. Entwistle was without a doubt the greatest rock bassist ever, and Moon at 17 was the fastest drummer (not the best) in the world. A friend of mine, an aspiring lead guitar player once told me that Pete was just a glorified rhythm guitarist. I replied that I hoped he would be nearly as good with his six-string playing lead. So far, no way.

    • @JTCurtisMusic
      @JTCurtisMusic  3 ปีที่แล้ว

A QUICK ONE was definitely considered, but because of its length, it would have taken up a lot of time and it just doesn't hit me personally the way the other bonus tracks do.

    • @alkholos
      @alkholos 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@JTCurtisMusic I suppose I'm informed by my advanced old age, and having followed the Who since their beginning, likewise The Yardbirds, Cream, etc. Your list is your list, and mine is somewhat different. I'm just happy that young musicians like yourself recognize that the old British Invasion produced some amazing talent. And all the artists just got better and better as they matured. I can't help but wonder what might have been if some that had died much too young had managed to get past their 30th birthdays. Can you even begin to imagine what Jimi Hendrix might do in his 70s? Thanks for your thoughtful playlists!

Good call on The Real Me. I believe the riff is loosely based on the cover of Baby Don't You Do It they were playing live in the early 70's. Supposedly during the Success Story sequence of The Kids Are Alright John is shooting down some of Roger Daltrey's gold records.

One of my first big rock concerts was The Who in Helsinki, July 9th 2007, their first Finnish concert since 1967. It's still one of the most amazing rock concerts I have ever been to. Roger and Pete were on fire that night. Totally mind blowing. I have the show on CD and DVD so I can listen and watch it any time I want to go back to that show.
Won't Get Fooled Again is my absolute favorite Who song. They do have some gems on their most recent albums, like Real Good Looking Boy, We Got A Hit and Mike Post Theme.

Recently I picked up a CD copy of "The Who By Numbers." I hadn't listened to the LP in some time, but there's something I should say about. I have never heard a LP which so vastly benefits from a remix and remastering. The bass and drums are so clear that it's close to being a different record/CD. There's no iconic song here, but the songwriting quality is high, and the performances are up to their standard. I think they just wanted to do an LP without drama or hype. The only other Who LP to compare it to is "Who Are You," and "By Numbers" is better.

Great list. Just five substitutions from me: Instead of "Magic Bus" "The Seeker" "Success Story" "Join Together" "Bell Boy":
"Christmas" "Summertime Blues" "Going Mobile" "Let's See Action" "Drowned" (Live At The Royal Albert Hall versions for the latter two)
If your restriction to the original lineup is meant for us as well, I'll go with the original "Let's See Action" instead.
The Live At Royal Albert Hall "Drowned" should pose no issue since it's drummerless. My top 10:
    1. See Me, Feel Me/Listening To You
    2. Love, Reign O'er Me
    3. Behind Blue Eyes
    4. Won't Get Fooled Again
    5. I Can See For Miles

I would have a hard time, if I should stick to that time rule. And right now I'm not sure what songs to include and which to exclude.
But I like your list (just as I would probably like almost any list of Who-songs). It contains many of my favorites, and I can accept most of those which are not exactly among my top-favorites.
    - With some few exceptions ...
Guess I would replace "Succes Story" with "Silas Stingy", "Substitute" with "I'm A Boy", ""Young Man's Blues" with "Shakin' All Over", Join Together" with almost any other Who-song and "Bell Boy" with "Doctor Jimmy", and then call it a really great list.
... But surely not the only one possible.
Here (without limitations and in chronological order) some other of my personal favorites, that haven't been mentioned yet: "The Kids Are Allright", "It's Not True", "A Legal Matter", "Run Run Run", "Boris The Spider", "A Quick One While He's Away", "Happy Jack", "Pictures Of Lily", "Tattoo", "Our Love Was", "Dr. Jakel And Mr. Hyde", "Overture" (to "Tommy"), "Amazing Journey", "Christmas", "Underture", "Go To The Mirror", "Guitar And Pen".
And I simply have to mention a few covers well: "Leaving Here", "Anytime You Want Me", "Bucket T", "Summertime Blues".

A brilliant analysis, it brought tears to my eyes.
One of the few compensations for getting really quite old is that the second gig I went to was The Who playing the Il Rondo ballroom in Leicester - (the first was Jesse Fuller who wrote San Francisco Bay Blues, same venue).
Decades later I did a few solo (bar) gigs in Canada. I was astounded when I played Behind Blue Eyes that almost everyone in the crowd knew ALL the words and sang along.
An outstanding band. Unique in every way.
    Thanks, JTC.

While I do agree with the comment that the My Generation stutter was mostly likely a setup for the "f...ade away" joke, I love the way it also suggests the adolescent combination of bravado with a deep, underlying insecurity. Call me insensitive, but that aspect helps make the song for me. The Who had a real way with psychological complexity and ambiguity.

As I commented on your Beatles list, a near impossible task for the greatest live act in rock... ever! Good effort, though.
I agree with some other commenters that the epic A Quick One should be there - my fave version being from the Rolling Stones TV special. From Who's Next - Going Mobile, Love Ain't for Keeping. The single Long Live Rock is great. From Quadrophenia: 5:15 is a must. Also Is It in My Head, Sea and Sand, Drowned, Cut My Hair... I could go on... Who By Numbers is very personal, but I like How Many Friends and Slip Kid. Who Are You is a missed opportunity to showcase John's Trick of the Light - an under appreciated rocker.
Agree with cutting off at Keith's death, but a few songs on Face Dances are okay. I can't agree with you about Eminence Front. WTF is it with that song that people like so much? I don't care for it or any other song from It's Hard.

Plus the version from the Rolling Stones RnR Circus is... well, it's a masterpiece, so much so that the Stones were embarrassed by how badly it blew their performances out of the water. It’s funny, if asked I’d almost certainly rank The Beatles and Rolling Stones above The Who as all time favorite bands of that era, but of all the albums those three bands produced, Quadrophenia is the one that still just amps me up and reminds me that I’m still a true believer in the power and potential of rock and roll. It makes me feel at age fifty five exactly as it made me feel at age fifteen when I first heard it: full of pent up anger and yearning, just ready to tear into life, to see what’s out there and to find out who I am (spoiler alert to youngsters: you never get a complete answer to those questions). Any album that can do that to a man approaching sixty is a work to be treasured indeed. Sometimes the Beatles and Stones just make me feel old. The Who make me feel alive.
It’s hard for me to listen to a single song from Quadrophenia , I always end up listening to the whole thing. Some of the deeper cuts that don’t make a lot of sense outside the context of the whole piece are so good they kind of defy the power of any superlatives to adequately praise them. The Punk Meets The Godfather, I’m One, Cut My Hair, The Dirty Jobs, all are sublime in their musical power and lyrical precision. Sea and Sand, 5:15, the entire track listing really.
From Who’s Next, Bargain is a favorite, as is Getting In Tune, and the woefully overlooked Going Mobile (the envelope follower auto-wah guitar solo, an effect pedal I generally loathe, is fantastic). My Wife is the quintessential Entwistle song, hilarious, literate lyrics, inventive chord progression (used to play it in a band years ago, never failed to puzzle most of the audience), and a cool brass section.
One personal favorite that would have to be on any list of mine, Slip Kid from The Who By Numbers. Not sure exactly what it’s all about, but if I had car, I’d surely want to leave the keys in it along with my vacuum flask full of hot tea and sugar, and I am damn sure planning on being a soldier at sixty three.

It was unimaginable luck that we lived in that post WW2 era that gave rise to the technology that made all this music possible. I'm now 74, and loved the Doo-Wop era, the 50s music that included Buddy Holly and Elvis. Then on to the sweet, smooth sounds of great Soul music from bands like the Drifters, then the Temptations and the Four Tops, as well as dozens of others. In 1965, the entire Ike And Tina Turner Revue with the Ikettes played a free concert at my local junior college. And young people take all this for granted!

Yeah, I prefer the live versions of two Who songs which are found on “The Kids are Alright”. These are “My Generation” (Smothers Brothers) and “Baba O’ Riley”. I consider these live versions the definitive versions of these two songs. They are much better than the studio recordings, they have much more energy and I believe that the “true” nature or essence of these songs comes through in the live versions.

At 3:02 Paul is playing an upside down right-handed Gibson. If it is strung normally that means changing the NUT.
that seems like a lot of work just to use that specific guitar! Were there so few L-handed guitars in the '60s?
Also the story of the 3x Danelectro Basses is alarming! Why not use a Fender or Rickenbacker?

The Who after Moon weren't The Who. Not because of Moon, but because Townshend was no longer interesting to listen to. He had no voice.
    .
    I love their earliest albums -- ! T.
I've been a long-time fan of Townshend as the essence of The Who lyrically, musically, and functionally. Surprising and sophisticated songwriting and deeper than most. Lovely ideas.
Who delivers them matters. The Who with Moon got Pete an audience.

The Who didn't make the theme song to Law and Order. You may be thinking of one of the CSI shows (two of which I actually worked on the crew for, no joke) all of which had Who songs as their theme songs: "Who are You" (CSI) "Won't Get Fooled Again" (CSI: Miami) "Baba O Riley" (CSI: New York) and "I Can't See For Miles" (CSI: Cyber).

While I disagree with some of your selections, I’ve been a huge Who fan, especially the early Pre 70s Who, since I purchased their first album upon release (I’m 72). Also saw them on their very first stop on their very first U.S. tour at the last Murray The K rock variety show, where about a dozen bands appeared to each play one or two songs. The Who did Anyhow, Anywhere, Anyway. Cream was also on that Bill. Anyways, what I’m posting about is a subject that’s always bothered me, the fact that great rhythm guitarist skills are routinely overlooked, and no rock guitarist was ever better at that than Townsend. It’s infused not only in his writing & rhythm work, but also in the way he approaches & executes his leads. While I’m here, I might as well mention my opinion on Daltry, the only member I don’t care for. Soul? That’s the last thing I take from his voice. I don’t like anything about it. The only vocalized coming from The Who came from those that Pete himself sang. Daltry especially stands out like a sore thum in the company of a trio of some of the finest musicians to ever grace a rock stage.I would love to have heard them in their peak years with an other frontman..... just my opinion, of course 😊

I believe it's short for "Modernist." It was kind of a culture of England that centered around Motor-scooters and soul music of the 60s, as opposed to Rockers of England who were into Motorcycles and 50s rock and roll. The Who heavily modeled their style after Mod culture. There was heavy conflict between them in the mid 60s like rival gangs, which is explored in QUADROPHENIA. There's a good film adaptation of it staring Sting, highly recommend it.
