I tried reading the 1st Harry Potter book as a kid and I thought it was so boring. I DNFed before I even knew what DNFing was 😂 and I never looked back🤷🏾♀️ I’m just not interested.
Ok guys, here's my confession. I still love Harry Potter 🙈 It was just such an integral part of my childhood and the first series that really marked me as an "avid reader". I feel like I spent way too much love and energy learning every single thing about that world to just give up on it! Idk you guys 😟
Harry Potter was the first saga I read at 12 years old (and the first I reread as 5 times in a row, before finding standalone novels and other sagas), and I *loved it.* Even without having that special relationship that some potterheads have with the franchise because they grew up with the characters (I read the saga already finished, yk) And despite my obsession with the books, I was never attracted by the movies (they were everywhere, so I only saw parts). Instead, I interacted a lot with other fans and platforms (mainly those made by fans), until I got sick of it. Long before J.K. Rowling exposed herself as someone closed-minded and unconnected to reality (I followed that infernal debate on Twitter and *nothing* productive came of it for anyone; I even read the essay where she remains firm in her opinion, based more on her personal experiences and prejudices than facts), the whole universe of HP was already _meh_ for me (although I was outraged by the bad-fanfiction-material that was Harry Potter and the Cursed Child lol). So yes, I spent a lot of love, energy and time on HP and gave up on it. It’s like when you have a best friend in elementary school but the paths of both separate and stop talking. It didn’t happen because there was a drama between the two, it was something natural that can (I emphasize the 'can', it doesn’t always happen, nor to everyone; proof of this is that I still love some other sagas I read back then and you still love HP), come when we grow and change. I understand you and it’s cool that you like HP, I think you don’t have to justify yourself. If you’re critical of the material and aware of it, I think it’s okay. Despite my current indifference and exhaustion with everything related to HP, I appreciate it for being a positive part (I got used to reading a little more, not to mention the strong emotions, enjoyment and happiness that gave me at the time), of my life as a reader.
I cant read classics bc of the old English. I use AAVE so heavily reading Austen and Dickens screws with my mind. I can read books from that same time period by Black authors though 😂 bc the AAVE is familiar
That person who re-writes everything must just think they have way better ideas than any other author? Lol. I can imagine re-writing certain scenes in some of my favorite books but not the entire book?? Is that person even giving the book they’re reading a chance if they’re re-writing in their head the entire time? Lol
14:00 I've circled around to feeling bad when I read a whole bunch of books in a month because so many people talk about feeling bad for only reading a couple books a month. So I'll down play what I read on social media a lot of the times.
mine is i wont buy a book if i dont like the cover. people say dont judge a book by its cover, so i bought one i didnt like the cover of (we were liars) and i hated it. i know its only one experience but ill never do it again.
I have problems concentrating, probably because of my anxiety, and I'm always re-writing the books I'm reading (in my head). Sometimes I like my story so much that the book becomes boring and with my lack of concentration I end up giving up reading it.
As for the comment about "love for books" I think the person means they love to read for reading's sake and are not much concerned about the book(s) as an object. Hope that explanation helps.
I want to like YA but I had a horrible time in high school and ot brings me back to my PTSD. It sucks. I love your dress! And Toni Morrison is one of my favs. ♡ love your channel
John Green is like Ed Sheeran for me, but with books. I think he seems like a pretty chill / cool guy, but I can’t stand his writing. I try not to have expectations with books (or movies) because I know if I read reviews, I’ll be influenced by them. Like I wasn’t a big fan of The Folk Of the Air series, but I probably would’ve enjoyed it a bit more if I hadn’t read the Goodreads reviews for it.
The only times I've bought hardcover copies was for preorders of books I was too excited about to wait for the paperback, other than that I never voluntarily pick hardback over paperback if I have the choice
I can't explain it better than them but I think that person meant they like reading the stories but they aren't passionate about books. I don't know if that makes more sense but I actually agree lol. The one about ruining paperbacks - I felt that. But not because I read them in the tub (respect to anyone that does that, but also, WHAT). During middle school, I always brought my books to school, and the way I carried my supplies around meant that my books were underneath my pencil box. The covers of paperbacks ALWAYS got caught in the box corner, and most of them are ruined because of that 🥲it hurts seeing my ACOTAR paperback because it has the original cover, but it’s all ripped at the sides because of my stupid box. I don’t bring books to school anymore lol. I read the first HP book and didn’t care for it. I preferred the movies. Also just realized I’ve been pronouncing SJM’s name wrong for three years💀She’s one of my favorite authors too (ik she’s controversial but her stories have genuinely made me so happy) I’ve been saying it as mah-s and not mass.
6:10 I certainly relate to this one. I absolutely despise classical fiction and I find history dull. I adore fantasy for the vast expanse of possibilities that comes with it- the worldbuilding, the characters, the style- everything is interesting and new and fun. fiction, though, I can't seem to connect with the characters. They're usually dull and boring and don't have the sense for adventure that I have and love to see my favourite characters have. The sense of moral conflict, the sense of worthlessness and everything above- everything that is in fiction and more.
9:39 I've done something similar, not rewrite but I get inspired easily, at this point it's annoying because I can't stick to one story, like I was watching Ozark the other day and came up with a story idea and next minute I'm watching Stranger things and coming up with another story idea. Like can I give some of this passion to someone.
i 100% re-write books while im reading them, or come up with a whole other side-plot / edning and get pissed when the author doesnt read my thoughts in advance. I know its a red flag but ive chosen to accept it
Love all your opinions which encourage people to read how or what they want to! 💖 I like classics but just recently I read Macbeth as a school edition because it makes it much more accessible to understand! Also book boyfriends can be fun, I guess, but it's always uncomfortable when it's people being older referring to characters which are minors :')
hiiii, i just started like really reading this year and i absolutely love your channel and i trust your taste in books so if you see this could you give me book recommendations written by poc?
the bluest eye by toni morrison, an ember in the ashes by sabaa tahir, raybearer by jordan ifueko, legendborn by tracy deonn, the poppy war by r.f. kuang, grown by tiffany d. jackson, the jasmine throne by tasha suri, the kiss quotient by helen hoang. lots of options from contemporary to fantasy here! make sure you check trigger warnings before reading🥰
Is the "literally" in 17:54 spoken in british accent or am I crazy? I've always heard (from movies obv, i'm not native) it spoken differently in britain or american set stories.
I love reading and of course have an obsession with buying books. But honestly I really just reread my comfort books and continue to watch my tbr to grow..
In an alternate universe, Instead of Jane Austen we have James Austen and he writes romance from the point of view from the male characters like Mr. Darcy, Mr. Knightley etc😅
I've been wanting to read some classics and I cannot relate to any of them, I'm gay and trans( although I highly doubt there will be any older books with trans characters) but I was wondering if there are any classics with at least a little good rep of gay people in it I think that would be super cool
The Picture of Dorian Gray is pretty gay; nothing is explicit but Oscar Wilde was very gay and it’s really in the subtext. The Color Purple also has queer characters!
I don’t know if they’re old enough to be “classics” but the fiction that James Baldwin writes contains good gay representation (Baldwin was gay himself)
I think some of the Hunger games fans are very toxic. I don't know if it's books fans exactly, but after the movies came out (no, even before, when the cast was announced) there was a lot of outrage about Rue being black (in the movie) because people just imagined her white/white tan. Almost the same about Tresh and even Cinna.
Definitely agree with your advice to read a book while listening to it at the same time - I'm reading To Sleep in a Sea of Stars rn and while I really love it, it's also over 800 pages and would take me forever to get through if I just read the physical copy alone. Bonus points: Jennifer Hale's voice acting lol
honestly whenever I feel bad about not having read for a long while i always come to watch Hayley's videos because they just make me feel so much better about it. in every video she always makes a point of its not how much you read but the fact that you read.
I dont read classic bc...simple, i cant understand them. Now, eng is not my first language but it might as well is because i was thrown in English language preschool and advanced to intl school my whole academic life. However, we dont study literature like that..so like... the language is just hard for me to read. I bought charles dicken oliver twist just for the sake of wanting to feel 🤩smart🤩 and 15 pages in, i’d never felt so dumb my whole life. It got me questioning my English ability 😭 because I understood every word written but why couldnt i GRASP the book???? I surmised it was the writing style back then, not my forte. Bye😭
🛑🛑🛑🛑 wait a minute… The only reason the Hunger Games fandom seems so civil is because they can’t afford any more negative PR. Turn back your clocks to just after they announce the casting for the movie when all of them went rabbit races over the casting of a black actor for a black character that they’re bad reading comprehension skills fold them into believing was a white character. I will never forget that comment; ‘is it wrong to say that finding out that Rue is black makes her death matter less to me?.’ I believe that that is the same fandom that someone from the Department of Education made a informal statement about the state of reading comprehension in America because of. The only way I will except anyone calling them civil is in the same way people say that the UK is less racist than America. It’s like it’s different but that doesn’t make it better.
That’s just awful. I cannot believe people would say that. I’m very sorry about these other fans saying this kind of stuff. Not all of us are like that, but their negative attitude makes it seem that way.
finally another spoiler connoisseur lol no, I did intentionally spoil myself for books before when I had trouble continuing... also unintentional spoilers usually don't spoil my fun ^.^ Edit: also just because you know that character is going to die, doesn't mean you know when or how it is happening. there were some really aggrivating characters and I looked them up and when I saw that they are going to die I was much better equit with dealing with the book until it finally happend lol

STARING AT THE PAGE WITHOUT THE AUDIOBOOK! Omg i thought it was only me. Also it helps because your brain cant pronounce the weird fantasy names.
fantasy can be so hard to get into😭
i 100% re-write books while im reading them, or come up with a whole other side-plot / edning and get pissed when the author doesnt read my thoughts in advance.
YES I agree!!! some ppl are so weird when it comes to thirsting after fictional characters🥴
The sass and wit, gurl im living for them
YAY i try🥰
I tried reading harry potter so many times, in my native language and in English and I always had to dnf it. I don't get the hype at all
you dodged a bullet😊
hiiii, i just started like really reading this year and i absolutely love your channel and i trust your taste in books so if you see this could you give me book recommendations written by poc?
the bluest eye by toni morrison, an ember in the ashes by sabaa tahir, raybearer by jordan ifueko, legendborn by tracy deonn, the poppy war by r.f. kuang, grown by tiffany d. jackson, the jasmine throne by tasha suri, the kiss quotient by helen hoang. lots of options from contemporary to fantasy here! make sure you check trigger warnings before reading🥰
@@HaydenBooks THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!!!
13:15 ok tbh this made me feel better Bc I’m a slow reader thx Hayley
i’m so glad it helped!🥰
I read the first book in Harry Potter last year and dnf’d the second book. I just recently got rid of the 4 I owned.
I think we do, in fact, have superior taste for being meh on evelyn hugo
so true of us😌
I literally love you sm 😂❤️
🤍🤍🤍
I started to read classics after I turned 25. Before that age, I couldnt connect to them at all.
they’re not for everyone!🥰
Hard agree on the spoilers thing. I am if the opinion that is spoilers ruin a piece of media for you, its not a good piece of media to begin with.
Is the "literally" in 17:54 spoken in british accent or am I crazy?
I've always heard (from movies obv, i'm not native) it spoken differently in britain or american set stories.
i didn’t intend it to sound like that, but i guess it might have??😭
I listen to audiobooks yet having hearing issues.
audiobooks are so wonderful🥰
jumpscare at 6:30
lmaoo 😭
3x speed?!?! bruh how???
i’ve just gotten used to it🏃🏾♀️
I just want to know the tea with harry potter, hayley 👀
jkr is a TERF and she’s written antisemitism and racism amongst other awful things in the harry potter books
I’m at 1.75x speed for audiobooks right now and now even regular talking is too slow for me
😭😭
I love reading and of course have an obsession with buying books. But honestly I really just reread my comfort books and continue to watch my tbr to grow..
10:05 me neither Hayley don't worry
😭😭😭
Great video!
thank you!!!🤍
@@HaydenBooks. You're welcome.
Who is James Austen ? 😂😂😂😂 we love James
In an alternate universe, Instead of Jane Austen we have James Austen and he writes romance from the point of view from the male characters like Mr. Darcy, Mr. Knightley etc😅
jane, james…my brain couldn’t handle them both😩
wow, the chaos
i can never escape it🤠
I've been wanting to read some classics and I cannot relate to any of them, I'm gay and trans( although I highly doubt there will be any older books with trans characters) but I was wondering if there are any classics with at least a little good rep of gay people in it I think that would be super cool
🙌👍💕thanks for the information you the best
❤️❤️❤️
Lol i have never read Harry potter either and the movies are BORING i cant get through the beginning
you have good taste!!
@@HaydenBooks lol thanks
4:42 omg I'm crying! so true.
once again a great video!
girl i want ur goodreads acc if u don’t mind
it’s pagesofhayley! all of my socials are linked in the description!❤️
I can agree, even though I’m a Hunger Games fan. It really sucks when a fandom you’re in is so toxic and knowing you’re not that toxic lol
James Austen has me HOWLING
I will never read Harry Potter because i really don’t want to support J.K Rowling.
period!
I was just trying to drink my Dr pepper :( now it's all over my room because I was laughing
LMFAO SORRYYY
watch the show for The Crows pls, it's so worth it
maybe i will!
book of the month sounds amazing, but i live in australia
Bye😭
🛑🛑🛑🛑 wait a minute…
The only reason the Hunger Games fandom seems so civil is because they can’t afford any more negative PR. Turn back your clocks to just after they announce the casting for the movie when all of them went rabbit races over the casting of a black actor for a black character that they’re bad reading comprehension skills fold them into believing was a white character.
I will never forget that comment; ‘is it wrong to say that finding out that Rue is black makes her death matter less to me?.’
I believe that that is the same fandom that someone from the Department of Education made a informal statement about the state of reading comprehension in America because of.
The only way I will except anyone calling them civil is in the same way people say that the UK is less racist than America. It’s like it’s different but that doesn’t make it better.
“Is it wrong to say” were they serious 😭 yes that’s wrong to say???
That’s just awful. I cannot believe people would say that. I’m very sorry about these other fans saying this kind of stuff. Not all of us are like that, but their negative attitude makes it seem that way.
The screaming edit 😭
I think the confusing post is about the person mostly academic books so they don't really enjoy it
ok but i have not heard John Green in a lifetimeee
YES FOR THE HARRY POTTER HATE TRAIN
Villians should go against the hero they don't have to be bad or toxic 😩
Why has this channel been missing from my life 😩 the algorithm failed me for so long
finally another spoiler connoisseur lol
no, I did intentionally spoil myself for books before when I had trouble continuing... also unintentional spoilers usually don't spoil my fun ^.^
Edit: also just because you know that character is going to die, doesn't mean you know when or how it is happening.
there were some really aggrivating characters and I looked them up and when I saw that they are going to die I was much better equit with dealing with the book until it finally happend lol
Not everyone knows JK Rowling is terrible the author of Color Me In is obsessed with her and even says in her book that she's the greatest of all time 😐😐😐😐
