The Office ran for years, but when was it at its best? In this video I go over my favorite seasons of NBC's hit sitcom (that most saw through Netflix) as well as the ones I don't think worked.

Since I watched it on Netflix. The Office is split into three categories in my mind:
Season 1
Normal Office
Post-Michael
I think 6 and 7 are their own category. A lot new things were introduced, the quality kind of declined, but there still was Michael.
6 and 7 were like GoT S05 and S06
Great Final Momentum in S07 until Michael leaving and S06 Winds of Winter
but these 2 seasons weren't as strong as last Peak 4 seasons
and in between those 4 and the Disaster that were to struck
@@gbrow1604 I’m not dismissing this, but even when the writers got more lazy the show still felt similar (when Michael was around) especially when one watches the Office over the course of two months or so.
@@gbrow1604 I don't think the writing declined until after Micheal left as someone who watched it way later on Netflix and even after it's still been an entertaining funny experience
@@daredevil6145 I could not possibly agree with that comparison, seasons 5 and 6 of GoT were absolutely nothing compared to the first 4, the first 4 are peak Television due to GRRM's writing while they butchered books 4 and 5 with season 5 making that season a massive step down (because even though they still had book material they absolutely ruined it by squishing 2 books into 1 season and making beyond dumb changes) and season 6 only seems good because of all the payoffs but those don't work if the setup is downright mediocre with the neutering of characters like Euron and Tyrion. Whereas seasons 6 and 7 of the Office are while by no means 2 of the best still around the same quality as seasons 2-5 (I think they're better than 1 personally)
Season 2-4 are all awesome. Best 3 seasons easily for me
2, 3, and 4 were a joy to watch. By 5 it was getting a bit too exaggerated and over-the-top and had lost that special something of the earlier seasons, but was still enjoyable in its own right. After season 5 the show began a definite, steady, downward slump.
@@planescaped both 5th and 6th seasons are better than season 4.
@@ragnarok283 NOT EVEN CLOSE IM SORRY! Season 5 has great episodes but it’s not as good overall
Agree
@@MinerFun I think season 5 had some of the greatest ideas within the show. Michael Scott Paper Company was gold, stress relief was amazing, I just wish they did more with Pam and art school and not just make her fail it and come back. I think they should’ve ended it after michael scott paper company gets sold because the other episodes are a bit filler and it would’ve made sense to start a new season with Michael as a boss again. Does all of it make it better than 4? No. it doesn’t have an episode as good as Dinner Party and 4 being so short actually made me love it the most. I love a short and sweet season and that did it for me. I would however say 5 is good whilst being a bit overstretched.
Andy is one of the weirdest characters in Tv, he starts off as a side-character in Jim's plotline of S3, then goes to Scranton to become a villain, returns as a minor-character, becomes a main-character, becomes the new Michael, and then fucks off on a boat for like a season then returns and shits on a car.
Got that just right
I think this was because he filmed one of the hangover movies during season 9(hence the absence), and the show always had to end with Dwight as manager 😅
That character assault is very difficult to watch.. As he sucks in sale and aces in management, they could've given him a less regressive arc but they somehow rubbed his character into a pile of shit. I skip the portions when andy quits to audition for a movie star dream 😮💨😮💨 jeez that just cranks up the misery and cringe to a 100. those two anger management session and field trip payed off for nothing, I know I'm nitpicking because no office works like that but someone will surely get a company closed if they fck off for 3 months
I still maintain Robert California was more threatening than Ultron as a villain
Robert California was a light in the darkness which was the later season.
He was certainly more frightening
He kinda softened in the later episodes but still enjoyable.
I'm the fucking lizard king.
Season 5 was peak The Office for me. The Michael Scott Paper Company and Idris Elba's arc were my favorite parts.
Can i have a rundown of that please?
@@richardbradley2335 ...What's a Rundown?
@@spiderman110990 like a summary
Honestly, rewatching that span of episodes with my sister, I realized that Idris Elba's Charles Minor was too mean. I didn't like him.
+ it was Dwight's best season
The Office at it's high points during S2-4 is absolutely untouchable.
Nah season 2 isnt as good as 5
@@henriklewis792 are you mental🤣🤣 s2 is quite easily the best season and its not very close
@@joetucker3539 explain how. Season 5 has stress relief pt 1-2, lecture circuit pt1-2, weight loss pt 1-2, the michael scott paper company, framed
@@henriklewis792 lecture circuit is not that good. Season 2 has the injury, casino night, the fight, the dundees, the fire, email surveillance, booze cruise, Halloween, etc. season 5 is good but it has some pretty low moments, season 2 has no bad epsidoes
Everyone talks about how rough season 1 is but i absolutely loved it. The awkward and cringe feeling is so funny to me
I find season 1 hard to compare to the other seasons because it feels more like a real office documentary, which is what the show was purported to be about. Season 2 on is more sitcom like and comfy, which is why the show gets re-watched so many times, but the cost of that is the increasing cartoonishness and loss of tension from feeling less and less like a real office. So I really like season 1 and the following season or so.
I agree.
Don’t get me wrong: it had its moments, like Diversity Day and a few other episodes. But the first time I watched it, I just didn’t get why so many people ADORE this series (yet!). Fortunately, every single episode of S2 (the best one by far) is where the show really took off. In fact, it found its footing sooner than Parks and Rec (which was just ok until Ben and Chris came in). Both shows had the same pilot season syndrome.
Weird opinion but season 1 was my favorite season...
The pam crying when michael pretended to fire her was so funny in like a feel bad way
Season 2-5 is peak office. I go back and fourth on which one I like the best but right now it’s honestly probably season 3
This is the most optimistic view on season 8 & 9 that I've seen. I know you aren't saying they are great, but you're pointing out the positives instead of the negatives.
I appreciate that breath of fresh air
I like to look at the office’s quality like a plane journey. Season 1 is that awkward getting onto the plane with people in the aisles trying to put their luggage away, nothing going quite right but getting to know the environment you are about to spend however long inside. Seasons 2 & 3 are the taking off rising incredible high so quickly and having a lot of fun on the way. Then 4 - 6 are maintaining that high level as you relax into this world with a little turbulence along the way. Season 7 is the beginning of the slow decline. Season 8 is the final steeper decline in for landing, making you a little nauseous. Finishing off with Season 9 as the anxious landing, pulling off overall a good ending to an incredible journey that you would happily get on all over again with no regrets.
Yes! I love your analogy- it describes the show perfectly! 🙌🏼 :)
Great analogy!
Peak
S7 > S6
The best Office moment is when Michael went to Pam's art show. The candy bar in the pocket made it perfect😄👌
Is there something in your pocket?
@@ill_at_ease a chunky.
Definitely didn’t expect Season 1 to be ranked so high
I'd rate it just above seasons 8 and 9 personally.
The show was *very* rough in season 1. Though it had its moments and "that special something" absent in the later seasons.
I think I used to also be in the same boat as you.
I'd recommend the show to people and advise them to hold on through season 1 to get to the vastly superior seasons 2 and on...
But with hindsight, aside from the pilot episode, season 1 is very strong.
It feels a little older and a little different from season 2 and on (when they really hit on the heart of the show, balancing Michael's behaviour out a bit more evenly between douche boss and honestly loveable, trying guy).
But in terms of developing its identity as separate from the original series and laying the foundation of where the characters would go, season 1 is much better on a recent re-watch. All opinions, of course - if you've rewatched recently and still don't expect season 1 to be so high, power to you.
It’s better than season 9, 8 and 7
@@ragnarok283 I agree. Just didn’t expect to see it over 5, or even 6
S1 is not that bad people
season 7 being such a good michael season really puts it up there for me. the fact that you finally get to actually like him is just so amazing
Maybe the same tier list for Parks and Rec would be interesting. IMO apart from season 1, Parks has maintain decent consistency throughout its run.
Yeah, its really rough when I try to recommended Parks & Rec because s1 is not good. I go as far as to tell people to skip s1
@@gabrielcastejon7914 Andy was only funny thing
@@gabrielcastejon7914 I just started watching it and yea season 1 was rough but after that it’s near perfect so far (season 4 now)
Literally just watched it cover to cover and it’s probably the most consistent show ever. It never skips a beat and it’s consistently funny throughout. It also ends very well which gets you bonus points 😂
Season 1 wasn't that bad. Kinda.
It's just clearly worse because the rest of the series is so great. Any flaw in season 1 (and there a quite a few) will seem bigger. Still had some gems in there
Season 5's gotta be favorite for a variety of things:
the Michael Scott Paper Company was my favorite story arc of the series
Jim getting engaged to Pam, Michael's relationship with Holly, the Andy-Angela-Dwight fiasco
the hiring of Erin, which is my favorite supporting character in the series
I agree about Michael Scott Paper Company that was the best stuff the show ever did
Office seasons 2,3,4, and 5 will always be some of the best tv I ever watched. The only comedy show rivaling it was late Parks and Rec
I agree. Those were the golden 4 for me. Season 6 was still good but I think it was the start of the decline and the second half was mostly kind of bad.
@@gbrow1604 season 7 imo is underrated
Seasons 1-8 of It's Always Sunny for me.
After that the show didn't really feel the same, which tends to happen as a show starts to run long.
I'd argue it's rivalled by The Good Place, Parks and Rec and It's Always Sunny as just the absolute best of what comedic TV can offer.
@@omegashinra7672 Arrested Development has to be there
S4 is my favourite by far, I think it has the funniest gags while developing Michael as a purely lovable character rather than guilt lovable, and it has, IMO, the best chemistry between Pam and Jim, not a hint of awkwardness because they're dating, and with none of the flirtatious energy from season 2-3 lost between them. My comfort season, even if Michael really does suffer under Jan for a lot of it
As someone who also watched it live, I knew from the start which season would be number 1. You had to be there to understand how much a cultural phenomenon the show was at time. Every new episode was an EVENT each week
Honestly season1 was hard to believe it got a yr 2, nbc had nothing and liked Greg danniels and Gabe it another run, season 8 was awful in the 1st run and was hard to return week after week for Robert California's weird boss week after week, also turning Andy from Dwight's foil into Michael Scott part 2, also letting Paul take over full show behind the scenes didn't work for me, yr 9 Paul was busy with The Farm spin off so Greg Daniel's returned making the show much ore watchable.
Yea fr was raised by that shi
Yea me n my brothers used to watch i was super young very nostalgic now older and rewatching it just makes me realize the masterpiece even more and i have no complaint im not a peaky critque kind of person
I wouldn't put season 1 above 5. I think the Michael Scott Paper Co was one of the best arcs the show had, and I wish they would've taken it further.
I agree. I like Season 1 better than most Office fans, but the Michael Scott Paper Company arc, one of my favorites in the show's history, elevates Season 5 over 1 for me. In fact it almost puts Season 5 over 4 for me. But I would otherwise agree with these rankings.
I’m a person who started watching The Office only a few years ago and I find myself much more in the same boat with you. I think my season ranking would be the exact same. Basketball is I think the most underrated episode it’s amazing
Man, without micheal scott this brilliant show became so damn dry
So true especially the last season it was so boring and unfunny
Season 8 was actually painful to watch
It like seinfeld if Jerry left
That's what happens when 90% of the show revolved around him
Erin certainly was a saving grace for the latter half of the show
Oh really? What was Erin's arc?
@@firstlast4592does she need an arc to be a good character?
i’m so glad you share my admiration for the deposition. Dinner Party (which is still an amazing episode) always steals the thunder from it but The deposition might be my favorite in the whole show
You posted this while I've been binging Office clips, nice.
The Robert California subplots are great. You alluded a bit to it visually, but he expanded the world.
Great video!! The run from season 2-4 is some of the best TV in American history
I would love to see you talk about Parks and Rec like you do the office
2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 1, 6, 8, 9
Basically same ranking but I loved season 5 and 7 way more than season 1, and yeah season 6 can be a slog
Holly, the Micheal Scott Paper Company arc, and Pam’s character arc almost made me put season 5 above Season 4
I like the new season 8 Andy and hated how Season 9 backtracked on that development and Robert California was a really interesting character until they kinda flanderized him into oblivion in the latter part of the season to justify getting rid of him (The Lizard King line is iconic tho!)
This is an amazing ranking
This has always been my opinion: if you view the show post-Michael Scott as its own series, it’s not all that bad. If you view them as the same, you can clearly see that they were running out of ideas and trying to do whatever they could to keep viewers entertained. The tone and content of the last two seasons would have worked better as a spin-off. They aren’t terrible and I’ll admit, a lot of episodes I still find thoroughly entertaining. But I think we can all agree they feel drastically different than the show when it still had Michael. And no one can deny: they took WAY too many swings and misses. Everything with Cathy, the love-hate relationship with Robert California as a character, Jim and Pam seeming like they’re gonna get a divorce, Andy referring back into a complete dick out of nowhere…I could name many more.
I couldn’t have ranked them any better. I agree 100% with your assessment.
So my number one and two are a toss up between seasons 2 and 3. Both are basically perfect in every way and are what solidified this show’s iconic legacy. Gay Witch Hunt..Drug Testing..The Convict..all classics. It’s Michael Scott as his best. Only episode that can top all those is Dinner Party (best episode of the series imo). Season 4 also hovers just on the outside of perfect. Seasons 2-4 is some of the greatest television of all time.
I like watching an old video of captainmidnight and I see the notification of a new one that I click to immidiately
It's crazy, I haven't watched the Office in a while and literally found myself laughing when remembering the plots of some of the episodes as you mention them in the video. Such a great show.
Season 2 is the best season but season 3 contains my favorite office episode. That being S3 EP13 “The Return”
I think the departure of MIchael Scott brought 2 problems. 1) It showed that the story was clearly gassing out and the characters were, for the most part explored, and 2) Any attempt to bring in a new manager and shake up would require main stay departures for it to actually gain ground and reach the heights of the best seasons. Don't get me wrong, I was happy with the finale, and over all I think it's a great show, but very much agree with your list.
"Business School" was filmed at CSUN, I took classes in that room. Kinda cool.
i liked when somebody asked Erin if she’s adopted and she says no not quite because she couldn’t close the deal
I agree with season 8 being last but the incentive and Gettysburg are some of the best episodes in that season imo
I would rank them all exactly the same way, except with Seasons 2 and 3 being interchangeable. Those two seasons are both sitcom perfection.
First half of season 8 honestly is some of my favorite stuff for Andy alone. He is so likable and tries so hard to be a likable boss and I just can’t help but love the whole dynamic of everyone. The incentive is honestly one of my favorite episodes
Solid ranking 💯
I think mine would go
Season 8
Season 1
Season 9
Season 6
Season 7
Season 5
Season 3
Season 2
Season 4
I’ve seen a lot of people hate on season 1 but I actually like. It feels a lot more real, especially compared to how cartoonish the show got in later seasons, but it’s still funny and it has some really good episodes in my opinion like Diversity Day. It’s not my favourite season but it’s definitely up there.
True and it's still good but season one was trying too hard to copy the UK show.
Office 3-4 are my favorite, because i feel like the side characters personalities (Kelly, Ryan, Oscar etc.) were really taking off in those seasons and it’s always been about the ensemble for me. In s2 they still felt like a group of straight men just there to react to Michael, Dwight, and p&j
Yeah, I agree with this. I’ve always said that in season 2, it kind of felt like they were still finding their footing. Though it’s definitely a good season, for sure, seasons 3-5 are what I would personally consider to be the “golden years.”
I really liked season 9 because the last three episodes felt like one Grand finale and I loved it
The last seasons weren't the best, but, unpopular opinion, I still really enjoyed them. The show still had me laughing and crying
The final seasons are when the show became a cartoonish parody if itself.
Me too! They're my least favorites but I can't deny I had fun watching them.
Sorry but them dancing down the isle will always be iconic
I can’t decide if I like season 2 or 3 better
Same they are on top for me
Agreed with most of where you put them, expect for 5 and 1. My order from weakest to strongest is 8,9,6,1,5,4,3,2, although 3 and 2 switch often.
Your ranking looks like mine. Where would you put Season 7?
100% accurate list, season 2 the 🐐
Facts
Ha! Chair Model was the very first episode I watched, and it's still about my favourite. In fact, season 4 overall might be my number 1 season.
One thing that the D'Angelo, and neighbouring storylines really capture is the feeling of what really happens when you lose a boss and have to go through a handful of weird ones until you get another.
I saw smth that perfectly summarized the/a problem with The Farm episode is that Dwights family is too normal especially when compared to how crazy he always describes his family
What a coincidence you release this video after I've been watching a bunch of clips this past week
Mine from worst to best, 8, 9, 6, 7, 1, 4, 5, 3, 2
Wouldn’t have ranked it different myself
Season 2 without a doubt was my favorite
Writing this before watching to see how similar our lists are
9, 8, 7, 5, 6, 4, 1, 3, 2
Mine are [worst to best] 8,9,7(hard to watch because I know Michael is leaving),6,5,1,3,2,4
4 was my favorite because the show felt like it really knew itself at that point. You even see Michael's maturity start when Holly Shows up and he willingly resists a "That's What She Said" opportunity. It feels like the season that takes us out of the office and into their lives. Especially with the Dwight / Angela arc.
I agree with so much here, especially your favorite season. I’ve watched that season so many times, every episode slaps and the arch is the best in the show.
This is literally EXACTLY my ranking
shocked and saddened that i wasn't invited to join captain midnight's new 1940 flight patrol
Crazy that Steve Carrel wrote Cassino Night
Yes he did. Steve wanted the writers to push a bit on the tension in the Jim and Pam romance so he did it himself!
Michael was by far my favorite character. After he left I tried to keep watching but I just couldn’t make it through season 8.
I enjoyed season 1. It had its growing pains especially with Michael Scott. But I still found the episodes very funny. Seasons 2 and 3 were the peak. Some of the funniest television I’ve ever seen.
Season 4 was good but there was definitely a decline. Seems like they struggled a bit now that the Jim, Pam, Karen, Roy arc was over. I also missed unhinged Andy although I understand why they changed his character. Season 5 was uneven although I really liked the Michael Scott Paper Company arc. Cafe Disco is one of my favorites.
Season 6 was a definite decline. I watched through the wedding episodes but started to lose interest after that. Pam changed quite drastically. Her assertiveness seemed to come out of nowhere. Season 7 was also not very good. They seemed to have run out out of ideas although i thought they handled Michael Scott’s exit pretty well.
I watched very little of seasons 8 and 9 and what I did see was pretty bad. It’s just not The Office without Steve.
While the video was shorter and less drawn out than I would have hoped, genuinely great takes that I agree with. Seeing Season 8 in 9th place for the first time was the most satisfying part of this ranking, since everyone hates on Season 9 so much.
After just finishing the offices a few days ago, I gotta agree earlier seasons where much better once Micheal left the show felt lost. 2-4 are 🐐
I think I’d agree with almost everything you said in this video, although I’d probably have swapped 2 and 3.
Personally, 2, 3, and 4 are kind of the show for me now. I usually just rewatch it starting with season 2 and then stop watching after 4 ends.
Season 4 isn’t as good as the two that came directly before it, but it’s kinda nice to just enjoy Jim and Pam being together. I love the “will they? won’t they?” in 2 and 3 but it’s refreshing to just see them together in 4.
My favourite part of the finale is the first song that Dwight and Angela dance because in the early parts of the show you can see multiple times that Dwight dances to Mötley Crüe songs and the first song that they dance is Angela by Mötley Crüe
My ranking would be pretty close to that, with a couple changes.

8. Season 8
7. Season 1
6. Season 6
5. Season 7
4. Season 5
3. Season 3

Episodes that stand out to me that you didn't mention are "The Alliance" which is my favorite episode of season 1, "Dwight's Speech" which is one of the best episodes of the show, and "AARM" which feels more like a finale than the actually finale to me. The Finale feels more like an epilogue in my opinion. "AARM" is solid!
AARM is definitely a standout of Season 9.
I love "The Alliance" and "Dwight's Speech," especially the latter. Dwight's delivering the Mussolini speech and killing at the awards banquet is so deliciously ironic, given that Jim waa setting up one of his best pranks ever. And didn't Dwight set Jim up just as well in "The Alliance"?
My list from top to bottom:

-Season 2
-Season 4
-Season 1
-Season 5
-Season 6
-Season 7
-Season 8
-Season 9
I forgot that Dwight keeps his fake moustache on even after Karen catches them spying. Love that.
My only change would be swapping seasons 9 and 1’s spots. I think season 1 was honestly mean spirited whereas season 9 had a lot of truly heartfelt moments.
Single best ranking video for this show I’ve seen. Not only is the ranking spot-on (though I might swap 8 and 9), but I also found myself nodding in agreement with the highlights and weak points of each season you identified. Great video!

I agree that s6 was the worst Carell year, it just felt they ran out of ideas in a sense because most characters had completed their arc, in tern I hated the mistresses story line , it was prolonging the end of the season , s7 is in my top 5 I just feel like we got to see more episodes centred around the minor characters and I love China because it was cool to see a completely different plot where Oscar is trying to best michael , also Michael being a mentor for Andy in business's seminar I think it's called, also Michael bonding with Toby in counseling is a high point...

The best season is whichever season you’re watching in the moment… They’re all goated
The Michael Scott Paper Company and Fire Drill are for me the best episodes. I believe you should move S5 higher. Also anyone would consider the leaving of Michael the start of the declining of the show but for me it was with David Wallace. He was the best character of the show
Almost completely agree. I might switch the last two seasons and call it good. Great video!

5-Season 6
4-Season 7

As a whole those last few season are definitely less consistent but I still absolutely loved them. Some of my favorites times were towards the end. Michael Scott is one of the greatest fictional characters ever made but I also found myself getting tired of him at times in my first watch because it felt like stretches he was literally all I saw. So, I found it very refreshing to get some more screen time with a lot of the side characters in the later years
This ranking is the most accurate ever.
I just started binging the show and I have to agree. Granted I’m only on season 2 episode 17 but in my experience as a viewer, almost all American tv sitcoms loose steam after about season 4 or 5 and just keep declining the longer it stays in the air.
Your list is 100% correct, well done
i was just doing a rewatch, so i'm glad to hear a resident expert has my exact ranking lol
Bro I'm an OG fan and I loved the incentive episode. The scene when you see everyone actually working had me dying
This list is absolutely spot on. I would rate them in the same order too.
