Something worth mentioning is how Plankton was supposed to be an extremely minor character. In fact, his first appearance was supposed to be his only one, but Plankton’s voice actor, Doug Lawrence, loved the character so much, he wanted to include him in more episodes. In fact, Plankton didn’t officially become a main character until season 4. All together, he only appeared 19 times in the first 3 seasons. Thank Doug Lawrence for why we even have so much of Plankton in the first place.
Also, similar stories with Karen. Karen's name is never said out loud in the first two seasons, she doesn't exist in mobile form until the first movie and "Friend or Foe" and gets more personality after the first movie.
I also wasn't all that fond of the seahorse episode from season 3, but the ending where spongebob says, "just get out of here you stupid animal" and patrick emotionlessly walks away still kills me
Hillenburgs marine biologist background added so much charm to the show, and I really hate how after he left, they stopped using real marine animals on characters. so many ugly bizarre creatures in modern seasons with no basis on real life.
@@frankthomas1569 Yeah I know there are still actual marine animals like Yeti crabs and such. Hate was a strong word to use, but the show definetly moved from great accuracy to random weird puking worms and whatnot.
I was actually a music student under the guy who wrote Gary Come Home! He's also won a Tony and all the works, but he finds it charming that his students get so excited about a song that he made really quickly for a cartoon. Can confirm, Stew's an awesome professor :)))
Remember:Patrick was fine with just getting a handshake, reasonable given his gift was just a little heart. But when Patrick saw Spongebob gave literal strangers better gifts, he then went bezerk.
FOR REAAL! When people remember the episode they usually seem to forget that he isn’t mad about the handshake, he’s mad about not being treated fairly for being his bestie. It’s kinda sad ;-;
A note for the beeves and butt head clip about the house fire. The kid had actually never even seen the show. His mother decided to blame that except for her bad parenting of legit letting the kid play with matches and a lighter. The creator of the show actually asked the kid years later, and is how the mothers lie got found out.
2:50:33 dude spongehenge was the scariest episode for me as a kid too, just thinking about spongebob spending the rest of his life in that cave alone and then seeing the jellyfish touring the monuments never knowing or understanding the person who made them and the conditions they worked under was way too existentially scary
It somehow brough peace to young me, like stil lscared the shit out of me as an adult though I can earnestly say that it is one of the better episodes of season 5
Fun little fact for the episode The Sponge Who Could Fly: In the scene in which Patchy goes around and throws all the Spongebob merch and bedsheets after being let down by the walk cycles, all of that merchandise he throws around was actually all knock off's as at the time Spongebob didn't sell any official merch so all the soft toys, bedsheets and backpacks were all things they bought from stores that sold merch just to fit the scene.
When I was a kid, the episode “Wormy” absolutely terrified me because of the butterfly close-up shots. It also gave me an irrational fear of butterflies for about 7 years
I also got scared of it, but the rest of the episode was so good to me that I'd memorize when the bug closeup was on screen, and then cover my eyes lol
I noticed that as the show went on, there were less real life picture gags. Like, instead of using real pictures of gross or icky stuff, they just drew it. For example, the episode with the ticks, they drew the ticks in extreme detail, while in the classic series, the ticks would have been footage of a *real* tick. I think that’s a reason the later episodes aren’t as funny or sureal, they lack those real life images to give it that, for lack of a better term, “fish out of water” feel
they also don't feel like characters living under the sea anymore, the new character designs and just overall premises are so out of place that it just feels like a show about nothing; in the first seasons being underwater really had an element to the scenery and situations of the episodes. For example, it would've been easy to just make spongebob and patrick addicted to... idk, lolipops or something, in the episode "hooked" but instead they used hooks to represent danger a fish might face underwater, i hope im making sense here lol
@@eyeslikeajungle No, I get it. Hell, the character of Narlene doesn't even feel like she belongs in the universe - she's just stapled onto the cast for no good reason to sell the Kamp Koral spinoff just like Maya from the Proud Family reboot is shoehorned in to fill the void of Sticky Webb after Orlando Brown's public meltdown.
@@matthewmorrison3745 while that is true, it was designed to look as accurate yet disgusting as possible with the given recipe. Tis not copium. Tis the truth!
@@ninjascoutwell he did say that the episode has a lot of great gags, he just didn't want to mention that as an example instead of the room decorating and room service
So in regards to “Squeaky Boots” episode you didn’t like very much, I think it’s worth mentioning it’s a play on Edgar Allan Poe’s story “The Telltale Heart”. I enjoyed that a lot as a kid.
When we read Telltale Heart in my English class (I can't remember which grade I was in) I remember being blown TF away when I put together that Squeaky Boots was alluding to the Poe story. My mind absolutely burst.
I actually liked when Krabs would feel some guilt over doing something wrong, in this case taking SB’s whole pay check. They made him too cartoonishly bad later on
It’s fine mark didn’t like it and he thought characters were out of character; it’s not that anyone should have acted the way they did, for this episode it was a play on the telltale heart, so in that regard characters could/were out of character and that’s why it’s worth mentioning
In poland they skipped it for some reason alongside some of season 3, we had to wait a couple years. Had to watch them on other sites because they almost never air on tv.
Don’t know if it was intentional, but Mark slowly starting to say SpongeBob’s name wrong and the title cards spelling it wrong, was actually pretty funny.
@@CommissarMitch the thing is that the misspelles go along with the episodes He called him Sandbob in the Sand episode Or Speechbob in the Oral Report episode And most of the time he would say his name correctly after misspelling it So I feel like it was done on purpose

My all-time favorite moment in the series is in Christmas Who?, when Squidward, dressed as Santa, tells SpongeBob this; "I didn't bring Christmas to Bikini Bottom, SpongeBob. YOU did." It's so sincere and sweet. Props to Rodger Bumpass' amazing line delivery.
Funny, I just remembered that line earlier today! With absolutely not have watched that episode recently. I think I randomly got the Christmas song from that episode stuck in my head and then remembered the line
its one of my favorite episodes, its a weird subversion of the usual formula where Squidward realizes he was being an ass instead of getting punished for it by outside forces and he goes through a whole ordeal to rectify it that Santa himself gives his approval for his actions and his moral character.
My favorite joke in the show is and always will be the one where SpongeBob breaks through the wall after squidward mentions Mermaid man and Barnicle boy. How Squidward says their names, the jank cg when sb pushes his body full force through solid iron, and the way the door was RIGHT THERE NEXT TO HIM just cracks me up every time.
Me too!! Definitely one of my favorite visual gags. The ominous cg doesnt fit the 2d environment at all and id say thats actually what makes it so funny to me, because its so out of place and unexpected.
@@justinqueso9644 maybe, but last i saw a pop culture reference was in battle for bikini bottom: rehydrated. I would check to see if the release dates correlate but im lazy.
@@mikethegoo ha! Yeah it's a forgettable piece of crap alright! Squidward forbids SpongeBob and Patrick to play in his yard so they dig tunnels under his house to get around this but it ends up bringing his house down and eventually the same with the rest of Bikini Bottom.
As a kid “Have You Seen This Snail?” Was always my favorite episode for the sole reason of there being a scene in which they make popcorn and popcorn has always been my favorite food. What can I say, I’m easy to please
2:18:00 So Tuck Tucker was a professor at the college I went to. He was just as goofy as his name implies. All around great guy. He worked predominantly with the original run of "Hey Arnold". I think there are videos of him that Nickelodeon did back in the day where he talks about & demonstrates his character design philosophy. Remember watching them on TV way back when as well. Anyways, I wanted to bring him up because, sadly, he passed away fairly recently. I knew him personally & enjoyed the time with him. He wasn't your typical professor; was definitely a goofy animator who wanted to share his passion of the craft with the next generation. I didn't know he worked on this episode in particular, but I do know he worked in a surprisingly wide amount of things. He even did two boards of "Drawn Together".

Spongebob's dip in quality is surprisingly fast compared to a lot of other shows whose creators left early on. Especially when it comes to jokes and dialogue, there's something so timelessly charming and witty about those early seasons.
Yeah. Most other shows like Simpsons and Family were a steady decline. You could pinpoint the exact season where they went to shit. But it took a few years to hit that point. Even Futurama's dip in quality, while being very obvious with it's cancellation and return, wasn't like this because there were still great episodes and masterpieces in the middle of mediocre to bad episodes. SpongeBob is like instant. There's a couple S4 episodes that are decent to good. But not many, it's really bad.
12:53 because things in the SpongeBob universe just stop existing when the writers don't need them. This applies to the drive thru at the Krusty Krab, The back door of SpongeBob's house, or even entire locations in Bikini Bottom. These objects and places only exist when their existance is necessary.
The fact that whenever Patrick gets any form of intellect or power, he's still a nuisance to everyone, means that it's basically just canon that Patrick is a bad person. He's not just harmful from ignorance, he's just always horrible and doesn't care about others. (At least modern Patrick)
@@brinkgruffan8218 He always had that brawn over brains vibe to him, and could be really aggressive if the scene calls for it like a lot of classic comedy/cartoon characters did (i.e. Homer Simpson, Ed from EEnE, etc.). However, the middle seasons leaned really, *really* hard into that angle of his character. Also giving him this weird arrogance to boot which, as Mark pointed out, feels really out of left field for a guy like him.
Fun fact: Waiting from Season 5 is actually based on a Spongebob picture book that had the exact same plot: Spongebob and Patrick waiting by the mailbox for a toy, it gets broken, Squidward and fixes it for them. Except in the book, the toy was literally just a piece of string that snaps in half and Squidward just ties is back together. It still has more value than the actual episode.
There were so many times throughout the video where I was like "Ok, surely I stopped watching this show at this point. I can't remember any more episodes." And then he starts describing an episode from, like, season 8, and I realized no, I still remembered commercials for this episode too. We finally hit episodes I had never heard of at S10.
Explaining the "my leg" meme as someone who just likes a nurse at the hospital so he's constantly getting hurt on purpose to see her could have been such a great episode. Such a shame the creators had no restraint at that point
I loved that episode, watched it while I was at a hotel and was absolutely excited for it. I knew exactly what episode it was from the title, and I was all for the song.
Something else about the “my leg” bit later on, besides being run into the core of the earth and then some, is that they don’t use the iconic voice clip anymore. Instead it’s a newer, way more drawn out and visceral one. I think that also plays a part in making it it less funny. The old one was so quick and overdramatic, while the new one sounds too much like he’s in genuine agony to be all that funny. Though I will say, since both versions are done by the voice of plankton, that guy is criminally underrated as a voice actor. He’s also Larry, the crazy chocolate guy, “HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO EAT THIS PIZZA WITHOUT MY DRINK?” All sorts of side characters. His delivery on them is just so raw, they don’t sound like any other cartoon characters even in the same show. Just shows how much having the right actors behind characters makes them so much more enjoyable.
In addition, they emphasize that Fred ("My leg" guy) is actually injuring his leg (or whatever body part he's screaming about) every time. I don't think there was ever a visible example of Fred injuring his leg in the earlier seasons. Like, he would get tossed by Mr. Krabs and while still in mid-air, yell "My leg!", or yell "My leg!" when getting sand in his eyes. I think part of the joke was the he would yell it for any situation at all, even if his legs are unharmed or that he would injure his leg in some way, but it would never be on-screen. You would just have to imagine how he broke his leg in the current situation, no matter how implausible it'd be.
Bit of a wild comparison here, but the intensity that Mr Lawrence has sorta reminds me of how wild Mel Blanc would go in some of the Looney Tunes shorts. I can really respect a voice actor that goes 150% in.
One thing I’ve noticed about the series is that, for a show that Nick corporate usually wants to be aimed at children, it’s funny that most of the celebrity guests they get (save for the celebrity call-in cameos from the 100th episode special) are semi-obscure people debatably past their prime that children likely wouldn’t know about. Compared to modern Simpsons which get major current celebrities like Elon Musk, The Weeknd, and Billie Eilish on board, SpongeBob’s feel more specifically chosen for more than just a bandwagon ratings pop, even during the mid and modern eras. Like seriously, what 6 year-old in 2009 would know about the lead singer of The Monkees lol
@@christopherminutolo9384 Nick probably just wants to get the parents and teens to watch SpongeBob again. Back when the show premiered it's first three season, it had high ratings from college kids who first discovered the show.
It sounds sweet that ‘Best Day Ever’ was performed at Stephen Hillenburg’s service… until you realise that out of context, that kind of gives off a different tone.
you're so succinct at explaining everything in a condensed manner, and you chose great scenes from the episodes to illustrate your points. it's so high-paced and well-put together... i can't look away. i need to escape from this video. i can't watch it for seven hours.
Funniest part about you saying “The Strangler” is a sequel to “The Bully” is that they both have the same voice actor, Thomas F. Wilson. AKA, Biff from Back to the Future!
I want to appreciate the fact that the staff of the show while they were naming characters they probably went: "Alright, we got squidward, Mr. Krabs, Spongebob, and plankton. But we don't have a name for that starfish." **some dude in the corner:** "yo name him patrick"
@@mikethegoo I just realized it was cheeks as in squirrels stuffing their cheeks. I always thought it was a hidden adult joke cause she lived in Bikini Bottom
Major props to Tom Kenny for voicing SpongeBob for over 20 years! SpongeBob’s voice has definitely changed over the years, tho. In the first three seasons, it was high-pitched, but still easy on the ears and capable of raw emotion. Then after the first movie, it got even higher and sounded rather immature and juvenile, but I blame the voice direction for that, not Kenny. And besides, getting older is natural. It’s not like he can help himself in that regard. Then after Sponge Out of Water, it dropped and sounded slightly more tolerable. Regardless, it’s remarkable how Tom Kenny has managed to stick with the iconic sponge after so many years and is still voicing him today. He’s like the Mel Blanc to Bugs Bunny and Frank Welker to Fred Jones. Thank you, Tom Kenny! 🧽🫧🍦🥜🌊🏝🪸🍔
@@kassidyryzer2909 yeah wtf do the writers have to do with how the voices are directed? not even counting the fact that tom kenny himself has been the voice director since like 2016
@@kassidyryzer2909 Yeah, you’re right. I’m sorry, I’ll change it now. In some instances, it’s like Roger Craig Smith as Sonic. Most people (expect me) hate his Sonic voice for sounding, too “old”, “deep”, and “surfer-like”. But when he’s directed well, he’s sounds great!
Actually, part of what made idiot box so amusing from the start is that SpongeBob and Patrick were the ones who ordered the television; but they only wanted the box. Squidward then asked them if he could have it--which they allowed.
For someone that’s “nostalgia blind”, you did a pretty good job being relatively fair to most of the modern episodes. I’m glad people do realize that modern spongebob isn’t complete garbage. Obviously season 1-3 are by far the best ones, but still.
People don’t give the newer episodes (id say around season 11-13) a chance, and it sticks because they’re kinda good They’ve also been adding back a lot old characters (bubble buddy, bubble bass, unfortunately no big sis Sam even though she’s my favorite AAAA-) Which makes for more interesting dynamics
@@LycanMOON its honestly largely due to how a lot of people grew up in (and still are) in that era of watching angry reviews of things without seeing it themselves with the bonus of just not having watched the newer stuff that came after, nor rewatching the newer stuff that was labled bad in the first place. Tbh I won’t lie and act like I wasn’t this person once, especially with shows like TTG Its honestly pretty easy to find weird echo chambers and wind up making mountains out of molehills. It is mildly nice to see more of the internet begin to look critically at these “reviews” and question why we ever followed them in the first poace The way some of these reviewers talked; you’d think stephen literally murdered their kid or something 💀
Quality over quantity my friend, and the writers get burnt out having to chuck so many out. The episode quality feels inconsistent, and the humor is just not the same anymore. Spongebob ended after the first movie for me.
i always felt the later seasons just ignore the fact they’re underwater. the early seasons had a weird amount of world building in showing how civilisation would work with creatures that live under water.
I really hate in love with a patty. The episode with SpongeBob falling in love with a Krabby patty! And the ending?! Why the fuck did they make SpongeBob eat it?! He could've just thrown that gross patty away!
For Mermaidman and Barnacleboy, yeah, Mermaidman no longer spoke in later seasons due to the voice actor, Ernest Borgnine's passing in 2012. Then they just didn't add them anymore since 2018 and so forth since Tim conway at the time was having health issues and ultimately died in 2019
The thing is I always thought that after the first movie we would have future episodes of SpongeBob with his struggles of being the Manager and having to look for a new fry cook and cashier while Mr Krabs has to find a new fry cook AND THEY DONT SCRAP THE IDEA HAVING HIM DEMOTED FROM MANAGER TO FRY COOK. Plus I enjoyed the idea that Patrick being just the guy who’s cool with things it just seems like he could’ve been a potential fry cook to help out with SpongeBob while he doesn’t have to be a glutton and eat everyone’s food but instead teaching himself self control
a few months ago I was in Montreal and was trying to make it out to Laval (a bit outside the city core) at like 11pm. The busses kept passing without me, and everything was just slightly 'off' from what I'm used to, and it was pitch dark. I literally felt like I was in Rock Bottom. I almost wish I didn't speak French because that would have been the cherry on top.
Not to mention it was dark af and the citizens looked alien compared to normal fish folk. But that is kinda the point since it represents a deeper part of the sea where it is dark af and animals do look super weird
I swear, the amount of scenes and clips i can quote from the first few seasons of spongebob is uncountable. You could say anything and i could most likely tie it back to a hilarious quote or scene.
Mark reviewing another cartoon that used to be stellar and has been milked dry to the point of corporate dryness for money? I love to see it. Spongebob was an integral part of my childhood, and I think I can speak for everyone that you always hit the mark (no pun intended) on your videos. Also, the amount of pain you probably had to go through while watching the later seasons is commendable so I'm glad you got through it. :)
Here’s a fact: The green part of the sponge is a scouring pad attached to the sponge for scrubbing difficult dirt/food on pots and pans. But it should not be used on non-stick (Teflon) surfaces as it will rub it off
57:48 This is actually genius continuity. First there’s the episode where Sandy goes away for hibernation, then we have the Christmas special, then we have the episode of Sandy IN hibernation and eventually coming out, then back to normal. The writers remembered that Sandy should be in hibernation for three episodes.
The fact that "Hi, how are ya?" is such a standard greeting, while also being a Spongebob reference, just goes to show how iconic the show is, even when it was in decline.
Fuck that joke! It's not clever, it's a load of shit. If he mentioned the remaining run time of the episode it'd actually be clever. Most overrated joke ever!
I know Mark specifically restrained from making Sonic correlations at a certain point but I find it fascinating how both SpongeBob and Sonic have the same exact problem of being way too reliant on nostalgia without understanding what actually made the good stuff work.
Also kinda similar timeline It's start most people regard as the best, being icons of their time, a bit after it isn't bad, infact having many good parts but you can still see something was up, it plummeting to such a low it's nearly a different franchise from its origins, to getting back on its feet making actually good content again for a while, to kinda just being safely mediocre to bad to the point of being just not too good. Thing is though with sonic, while the newest games might not be good, the movies, comics, and just love and content from the fans are carrying the franchise right now.
@@The-Mr-Man-Man You're not alone on that. S11 ended up being my main dropping-off point with the series, mainly due to the overexaggerated animation style and Hillenburg's death though I did end up seeing three S12 episodes sometime after. (The Krusty Slammer, SB's Big Birthday Blowout, Sandy's Nutty Nieces)
@@brycefourn2001 thank you! the new seasons are so expressive with the animation and stupid faces that it becomes obnoxiously unfunny. even seasons 5-8 are funnier and more entertaining than the current ones. idk why people think new SB is having a resurgence when its even worse than the dark era, shits basically bootleg ren and stimpy now lol
I’m honestly surprised he hasn’t done every Fairly Odd Parents episode yet, considering how much he grew up on the series. Maybe an upcoming project? Anyway, great work as always Mark.
It's kind of a weird note, but I only recently caught the joke in Squidward's line "I give it 11 minutes" after Sandy says she'll give it a week. As a kid I laughed at the sarcasm, but it's also a light fourth wall break acknowledging that the segments are 11 minutes long. I just thought it was a random number he threw out there to be funny, but it was meta before I even knew what that meant
1:15:26 10 YEARS! 10 years I've had that thought and nobody agreed with me, 10 years I've been stranded in my thoughts that the jelly fish jelly looks like the finest most scrumptious delicacy in existence and now I finally have gratification, THANK YOU MARK.
A minor detail I really liked is how Mark just randomly calls SpongeBob something random that just resembles his name, to the point that he also changes the titles with SpongeBob in them. Really good gag.
you slept on Krab-Borg so hard. That section with the "You've reached the navy's automated hotline" "NOT THE NAVY" and "Robots have taken over the world......... OUR WORLD!" is one of the best triple shots of jokes in the whole series.
To be honest, Are You Happy Now isn't outright horrible. SpongeBob's characterisation definitely saved the episode, but the two tasteless jokes just made me lose interest.
@@jay0787 The panty raid and old man walking the street? Its been a while but I remember the panty raid as the one big "Oh my Goodness what?!" Joke of the episode. Not trying to start beef I just thought you clarify like I said that's the only more teenager oriented joke I can remember in the episode
honestly i never noticed the character shift of patrick going from dumb advice-giver to just dumb guy. really makes me wish they kept him as the chill guy
To the people who want Mark to rank every Sesame Street episode: not every episode has been made public yet, as they haven't been rerun in years. But when they are, he will absolutely be obligated to rank them in an unprecedented 20 hour-long video.
The only difference is this time the series doesn't get run into the ground at any point (At least as the time I'm writing this comment) and stays pretty good, so I wouldn't get my hopes up. I've heard it does get worse, but never bad by any means. We'll only know if he'll make either if he releases it or dies beforehand
I completely forgot how GOOD food looked in SpongeBob. I particularly remember wanting to try the sandwiches that SpongeBob and Sandy make using karate, the krabby patty during the Neptune battle, the pie bomb, and even the ketchup and onion sundae and the stuff the cave versions of them eat in the BC episode so bad. The style and animation just nail food on the head...
glad to know I wasn't the only one who wanted to try the ketchup and onion sundae. My favorite would have to be the Super Gooberberry Sunrise from the first movie. :3
There was the episode where mr Krabbs threw a birthday party for pearl in the crusty krab. He made her a cake out of cardboard… cardboard or not I always wanted a piece
I remember back in the day when they did the “best day ever” Marathon where they played the “top 100 episodes” and the top 10 were all recently aired season 4 episodes. Even as a kid something felt really off about that.
To me, there's three "eras" of SpongeBob: 1. The Classics (1999-2004) 2. The Paul Tibbitt Takeover (2005-Early 2015) 3. Return of the Old Writing Crew and "Modern" Era (Mid 2015-Present)
The fact that this guy put so much time and effort into watching, reviewing, and ranking every single episode of the last 23 years is some next level shit. I haven’t watched the show in about 10 years and seeing a review of each episode from the last decade really reveals where show’s status currently stands.
So Squeaky Boots is actually a play on “Tell Tale Heart” which is the Edgar Allen Poe story where the main character murders an old man and hides him underneath the floorboards, but when the inspector comes he keeps hearing the old man’s heart beating and ends up confessing. It’s much more fun if you know the context, but probably went over a lot of young audience heads
Also, Day 2 of watching this video, and all I have to say is you’re a trooper for watching literally any episodes past season 4. I vaguely remember watching a few of the later episodes after school, and I had the same reaction as you, where I’d kind of just sit there expressionless and bored.
6:33:25 Squidward staying with Plankton for the night actually sounds like a way better setup than him staying with Patrick. Plankton could exploit Squidwards ego and hate for the Krusty Krab, nearly recruiting him before the nights end but ruining it in an ironic way that ties into both of their personality traits.
the "Sponge who could Fly" is the only episode of spongebob I had never seen (back when it was currently like season 7 of the show) because it would never air on tv and was originally only available tacked onto dvds of the season
oh yeah 100%, the walk cycle bit of the sponge who could fly literally gave me nightmares as a kid, and to this day it still looks insanely uncanny to me.
Me too lol and the first time I saw the episode I was like 11 (in 2015 since I wasn’t allowed to watch it when was a lot younger because homeschooler haha). But I got disturbed by a lotta random shit for no reason around that point of my life haha
I honestly wish the walk cycle was a little shorter because the Patchy segments (while good) pretty much serve as filler in The Spongebob Who Could Fly, it either had parts that were pointless or would go on for too long. Plus, if you count the commercial break (which is 4 minutes), The Sponge Who Could Fly begins with *15 minutes* of filler before the actual episode begins
To me it's the music and especially sound effects, the transition animations are one thing but the weird/wacky music and sound effects amplify the bizarre vibes
I remember watching the original airing of "Just One Bite" with the gas moment and when they got rid of it I thought I just imagined that scene for some reason. Also, that episode premiered in October 2001, so there were many factors that lead that specific scene to get cut. I just enjoyed the work around for the episode was just an unnatural zoom in for it.
I knew as a kid there was a removed scene. I always saw the cut version and squidward just randomly teleported into the Krusty krab. I always questioned how squidward got in and wouldn't Mr krabs have some sort of security?
The cloaked guys in trident trouble surprised me to see. They are a reference to ancient greek plays in which a group of figures called a chorus would be on stage and occasionally give exposition. They did a similar thing in Hercules with the singing women in the intro.
What always bugged me about the “Long Pants” episode is that the commercials for it were all over the place but literally nobody cared about it because it aired on the exact same day as the Gravity Falls finale. Seriously, they couldn’t have picked a better date?
Fun fact: Most of the storyboards for Spongebob had actual swear words inserted into them, and not just the ones where swear words were hinted at but censored (Which are essentially "translated" in the storyboards), knowing that they would be edited out by the people who put the episodes together afterwards.
@@PinClockFuntime Quite possibly, I'm a little rusty on the exact times they substituted swear words out but I know that in "Can you spare a dime" when Spongebob lifts Mr. Krabs up he calls him a "Son of a bitch" or something in the storyboard instead of custacean cheapskate, so that's about what you can expect, lol
@@MauriAllure I remember a couple Adventure Time storyboards had a similar instance. One of them that took off was just Finn staring into a window going "Jake, what the fuck", when the finalized line was "Jake, what is your deal?" The person in charge of the edit explicitly notes that they're upset because the original line was indeed a lot better.
I haven't seen that "Squid on Strike" episode in many years, but I constantly think of "Krusty Krab is unfair! Mr. Krabs is in there, standing at the concession, plotting his oppression!" And now as an adult, I actually understand what he's saying, even though Spongebob doesn't.
@@heater1237 that or maybe Simply Dad (Mark’s editor) was the one who put the Atlus related OST since he’s a Megaten fan. Still either if it was him or mark, they did pick a lot of bangers.
Seemingly the only thing I can say has improved in the later seasons (besides the great animation) is how Karen seems to have actually gotten better over time. Initially she almost only existed just to give Plankton someone to play off of that isn't from the Krusty Crab, and she was usually limited to having a stern tone in her voice. But later on I noticed how fun and expressive she's become. Which I bet some people will feel like it's out of character, but given the context of who her voice actor actually is, you can tell she's just having a lot of fun these days, so I can't help but get sweet vibes from Karen. Her development was cool.
Up until about mid s8-s9 I had vivid memories of seeing every episode on TV, even how some of them were promoted. Seeing some of these episodes for the first time, especially from a show that was my entire childhood, was surreally sad.
i remember whatever happened to spongebob? being SO HYPED UP. the ads were like “OH MY GOD HE HAS AMNESIA… WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO HIM???????” & then it was mediocre as heck
@@synodicseason The one I remember being hyped the most for no reason was "It came from Goo Lagoon". I had stopped watching at that point but the advertisement made me tune back in for that one
The problem with Futurama is that it's basically all really good so it be less interesting of a video imo. Yah there is the occasional dud but even the later seasons have some of the best episodes they ever made. I love American Dad as well but I can see that getting more grating on a long watch so it's a good idea imo.
I don't know why, but as a kid the episode Grandma's Kiss always made me tear up. Maybe it's Spongebob crying about how he still wants to be loved like a little kid by his grandma, and me feeling the same.
That whole episode made me uncomfortable when I was younger, idk I find it weird that Spongebob gets unconditional love from his Grandma no matter how old he gets while everyone made fun of him for it, which the writer still includes as the episode's final punchline. Felt strangely cruel for the time
I really loved how the Graveyard Shift episode calls back to the fact that Squidward has been working at the Krusty Krab longer than SpongeBob has, and its what drives SpongeBob's thoughts about believing Squidward's story about the previous fry cook
The whole "Doing funny faces for the sake of trying to make another meme face" really sounds right, tbh. The season came out after the explosion of the "SponGeBOB FaCe MeME" so they clearly wanted to try and capitalize on that and make another.
that logic is really stupid to me, the current storyboarders on spongebob are passionate about cartoons like tom and jerry, looney tunes and ren and stimpy, does it occur to you maybe they just draw cartoonish exaggerated faces because they find them funny?
@@bathroomshy it changed suddenly and very dramatically due to the reaction and SpongeBob has done it’s best to stay relevant and entertaining so I doubt they did it “just because it’s funny”. Being influenced by an audience that they’ve had for 20 years should make sense to you especially in todays time with all of the competition.
I don’t think that quite adds up due to the fact that episodes are often made a year or two in advanced, sometimes longer. Unless you’re implying that they can all see into the future 24/7 It just seems like a big “causation doesn’t inherently equal correlation” or whatever type thing. Its like that time some people tried to accuse the staff behind Gravity falls for “ripping off” FNAF when they happened to air an episode that featured scary animatronic around or just before the release of FNAF 2 or something. When in reality what REALLY happened was the idea came from the general fear of creepy chuck e cheese animatronics from the staffs childhood 20 years ago. And the entire episode was boarded and scripted years before fnaf ever existed 💀 I’m paraphrasing hard (cause i’m not sifting through 3 billion episodes) but this general topic was talked about on the pizza party podcast by a guest whose worked for tv broadcasted cartoons and essentially they said that as much as its fun to believe that the people behind these things are these crazy calculating, vindictive, megalomaniacal guys that are just drowning in corporate espionage and playing 4D chess with the outside world- At the end of the day, the truth is rarely that interesting; they’re just guys tryna do a job and often have 0 insight into the future a lot of the time and have 0 control over airdates so coincidences are just bound to happen occasionally.

Fun little fact for the episode The Sponge Who Could Fly:
In the scene in which Patchy goes around and throws all the Spongebob merch and bedsheets after being let down by the walk cycles, all of that merchandise he throws around was actually all knock off's as at the time Spongebob didn't sell any official merch so all the soft toys, bedsheets and backpacks were all things they bought from stores that sold merch just to fit the scene.
thats really funny
Question: How can you tell?
Anwser: His eyes are different and he wears a bow tie
Technically half true
They ARE all official merchandise but have to be altered because a show for kids cannot show/advertise merchandise in the US
Merchandise for SpongeBob started being sold at the time, but like Negi Kitsu pointed out, they had to alter it to abide by US law.
@@Negi-Kitsu Really? That's odd, given the US does it a lot and the EU is harsher on it..
When I was a kid, the episode “Wormy” absolutely terrified me because of the butterfly close-up shots. It also gave me an irrational fear of butterflies for about 7 years
My sister got scared of that particular episode too. Better times…
maybe i was a weird kid but those shots always fascinated me, something about it just made me wanna look at more bugs
I also got scared of it, but the rest of the episode was so good to me that I'd memorize when the bug closeup was on screen, and then cover my eyes lol
The close-up shots were from a horsefly not a butterfly.
omg, same! I could not for the life of me find out why I was so scared of butterflies for so long, and then I remembered this episode.
@@eyeslikeajungle no, i understand perfectly. And that example is perfect!

@@matthewmorrison3745 while that is true, it was designed to look as accurate yet disgusting as possible with the given recipe.
Tis not copium. Tis the truth!
Mark you missed the best joke in the series: 5:59:57
Gary is reading a cookbook titled “cooking without salt”. He’s a snail lmao.
same how he didn't talk about the scene in krusty towers with them kidnapping squidwards mother
That's pretty mid, humor is subjective though ig
Yup it's what I said to in my comment lol
I actually liked when Krabs would feel some guilt over doing something wrong, in this case taking SB’s whole pay check. They made him too cartoonishly bad later on
It’s fine mark didn’t like it and he thought characters were out of character; it’s not that anyone should have acted the way they did, for this episode it was a play on the telltale heart, so in that regard characters could/were out of character and that’s why it’s worth mentioning
He didn't recognize a Greek Chorus, so it makes sense he didn't recognize that either
Watching through this video has made me realize how often Nick aired season 4 when I was younger. Those episodes are practically ingrained in my head.
Same I don’t know why
Probably a result of how happy they were that the show continued
In poland they skipped it for some reason alongside some of season 3, we had to wait a couple years. Had to watch them on other sites because they almost never air on tv.
For me the SpongeBob era that’s ingrained in my head are the season 6-8, they came out when I was younger and just always got reruns as I grew up
Oddly, I don't remember half of them at all. Guess that's the boring writing.
Don’t know if it was intentional, but Mark slowly starting to say SpongeBob’s name wrong and the title cards spelling it wrong, was actually pretty funny.
I personally feel it is unintentional due to how many times Mark has to say the name. It is not a simple name like Homer or Peter.
@@CommissarMitch It absolutely is *not* unintentional. It's a very deliberate meme.
The SpongeBob meets the strangler was spelled as Spongerbob meet the strangler lol
aww hell nah sponacge Bob hitti n dat griddy
@@CommissarMitch the thing is that the misspelles go along with the episodes
He called him Sandbob in the Sand episode
Or Speechbob in the Oral Report episode
And most of the time he would say his name correctly after misspelling it
So I feel like it was done on purpose

My all-time favorite moment in the series is in Christmas Who?, when Squidward, dressed as Santa, tells SpongeBob this;
"I didn't bring Christmas to Bikini Bottom, SpongeBob. YOU did."
It's so sincere and sweet. Props to Rodger Bumpass' amazing line delivery.
Funny, I just remembered that line earlier today! With absolutely not have watched that episode recently. I think I randomly got the Christmas song from that episode stuck in my head and then remembered the line
Actually just watched it this morning!
its one of my favorite episodes, its a weird subversion of the usual formula where Squidward realizes he was being an ass instead of getting punished for it by outside forces and he goes through a whole ordeal to rectify it that Santa himself gives his approval for his actions and his moral character.
@@buwheal Pretty sure it's a Terminator 2 reference, the way spongebob comes out the wall is the way the T1000 comes through the floor
@@justinqueso9644 maybe, but last i saw a pop culture reference was in battle for bikini bottom: rehydrated. I would check to see if the release dates correlate but im lazy.
my fav thing isnt really a joke. its the line "ive come for your pickle" like why tf is that so good????
I love the cgi on the wall when he goes through
I love that Mark keeps mentioning Patrick's barbeque in his backyard, but the one time Pat actually uses it (in The Card), he doesn't bring it up.
True lol
He keeps bringing it up? I didn't hear that... Nor does Patrick ever show it unless he needs it, I think
@@mikethegoo he brought it up when talking about That Sinking Feeling in season 7
@@ShadowtheTH-camr523... Which episode is that again?

Holy hell-
Spongebob's dip in quality is surprisingly fast compared to a lot of other shows whose creators left early on. Especially when it comes to jokes and dialogue, there's something so timelessly charming and witty about those early seasons.
Honestly yeah, I was expecting him to say S4 was actually nearly as good as 1-3 but was surprised to see how much of it wasn’t good
@@hoffer_moment Look up a list for recommendations for season 4.
The fact that me and my friends can SEAMLESSLY quote ENTIRE ASS EPISODES says a lot as to how memorable the first 3 seasons were.
@@MrSupersonic2012 the quality got ripped away like a bandage
12:53 because things in the SpongeBob universe just stop existing when the writers don't need them. This applies to the drive thru at the Krusty Krab, The back door of SpongeBob's house, or even entire locations in Bikini Bottom. These objects and places only exist when their existance is necessary.
It is insane how iconic so many of the first seasons episodes were. Had no idea there were THAT many bangers that early on.
There’s a reason seasons 1-3 are considered the “golden age of SpongeBob”
Heh, classic spongebob just went "Oops! All bangers!"
The only seasons that matter.
@@bleepiestofbloops Nah, a few of the other seasons had bangers here and there too. Yes, even the much later ones.
@@chrisrockett5897 Here and there. Not full seasons.
The fact that whenever Patrick gets any form of intellect or power, he's still a nuisance to everyone, means that it's basically just canon that Patrick is a bad person. He's not just harmful from ignorance, he's just always horrible and doesn't care about others. (At least modern Patrick)
It's such a weird thing to me because growing up I always saw him as like that chill stoner friend
Patrick was just completely ruined in the later seasons. (Cool seeing you here btw Isaiah :P)
Yeah I been wanting him and Krabs d34d since season 5
He’s better in the newer seasons and was alright in seasons 4 and 5, but technically he could always be a jerk if he wanted to.
@TheGoatOne I think it’s just called SpongeBob’s New Toy. I read it way back in elementary school years before the Waiting episode aired
I remember having that book as a kid and when I saw that episode for the first time I was like, “wait I’ve seen this before.”
@@MauricioVasquezSpirits SAME!
I think the book was called "Hands Off!", my mom bought that and a Fairly OddParents book for me at the Virgin Megastore... yeah I'm that old 😅

Or if anyone would figure out that ice is the solution.

Explaining the "my leg" meme as someone who just likes a nurse at the hospital so he's constantly getting hurt on purpose to see her could have been such a great episode. Such a shame the creators had no restraint at that point
Its a bit like when a big prequel explains the entire backstory of a character’s favorite coffee cup

@@Princess-shitter-sprinkles 💀
@@Princess-shitter-sprinkles …?
Mr Lawrence and Tom Kenny were also voices in Rocko's modern life. Kinda cool that they went to SpongeBob immediately after
@@ugandahater I believe Stephen Hillenburg also worked on Rocko as well.
I can really respect a voice actor that goes 150% in.
plus, Plankton said the phrase in Pineapple Invasion, when his disguised leg was slammed on the door by Gary.
Davy Jones locker!!!!!!!
I knew about David Bowie since I saw labyrinth on tv.

@@christopherminutolo9384 Nick probably just wants to get the parents and teens to watch SpongeBob again. Back when the show premiered it's first three season, it had high ratings from college kids who first discovered the show.
Ngl I just feel like the staff do what they want.
If they want Shaggy 2 Dope and Violent J to voice two singing clownfish then they will.
It sounds sweet that ‘Best Day Ever’ was performed at Stephen Hillenburg’s service… until you realise that out of context, that kind of gives off a different tone.

Funniest part about you saying “The Strangler” is a sequel to “The Bully” is that they both have the same voice actor, Thomas F. Wilson.

Fred Jones is definitely as iconic as Bugs Bunny and Spongebob
@@qwerty5684 Well, next to Scooby-Doo, he is his most iconic role.

Actually, part of what made idiot box so amusing from the start is that SpongeBob and Patrick were the ones who ordered the television; but they only wanted the box. Squidward then asked them if he could have it--which they allowed.
Idiot Box will always be my personal favorite just on that concept alone, on top of how hilarious their voice acting is when playing pretend
Why are you saying “actually” in the context of what others find funny about the episode 🤣
For someone that’s “nostalgia blind”, you did a pretty good job being relatively fair to most of the modern episodes. I’m glad people do realize that modern spongebob isn’t complete garbage.

For Mermaidman and Barnacleboy, yeah, Mermaidman no longer spoke in later seasons due to the voice actor, Ernest Borgnine's passing in 2012. Then they just didn't add them anymore since 2018 and so forth since Tim conway at the time was having health issues and ultimately died in 2019

oh yeah 100%, the walk cycle bit of the sponge who could fly literally gave me nightmares as a kid, and to this day it still looks insanely uncanny to me.
Same
Me too lol and the first time I saw the episode I was like 11 (in 2015 since I wasn’t allowed to watch it when was a lot younger because homeschooler haha).
I think I had a DVD that had that scene in it?
It wasn’t banned in Canada on Netflix, I saw that scene multiple times
Someone uploaded the original airing of that online and on the SpongeBob wiki page for "Just One Bite."
I knew as a kid there was a removed scene. I always saw the cut version and squidward just randomly teleported into the Krusty krab. I always questioned how squidward got in and wouldn't Mr krabs have some sort of security?
@@captainpep3 I found the premiere: th-cam.com/video/i-DBXsHRVV4/w-d-xo.html
09:46 really is the goat of animation history
The cloaked guys in trident trouble surprised me to see. They are a reference to ancient greek plays in which a group of figures called a chorus would be on stage and occasionally give exposition. They did a similar thing in Hercules with the singing women in the intro.
Oh yes, the Muses.
What always bugged me about the “Long Pants” episode is that the commercials for it were all over the place but literally nobody cared about it because it aired on the exact same day as the Gravity Falls finale.
Seriously, they couldn’t have picked a better date?
Fun fact: Most of the storyboards for Spongebob had actual swear words inserted into them, and not just the ones where swear words were hinted at but censored (Which are essentially "translated" in the storyboards), knowing that they would be edited out by the people who put the episodes together afterwards.
nice
I wonder if Bikini Bottom's swear dictionary (Tartarsauce, Great King Neptune, Barnacles, etc etc) came out from this
@@PinClockFuntime Quite possibly, I'm a little rusty on the exact times they substituted swear words out but I know that in "Can you spare a dime" when Spongebob lifts Mr. Krabs up he calls him a "Son of a bitch" or something in the storyboard instead of custacean cheapskate, so that's about what you can expect, lol
They did the same for Regular Show although the target audience was a bit older than Spongebobs. I wonder how many others did the same
@@MauriAllure I remember a couple Adventure Time storyboards had a similar instance.
One of them that took off was just Finn staring into a window going "Jake, what the fuck", when the finalized line was "Jake, what is your deal?"
The person in charge of the edit explicitly notes that they're upset because the original line was indeed a lot better.
I cannot believe this man has watched and reviewed so many episodes on so many shows.
Same!
The biggest takeaway from this video is that Mark's editor has an incredible taste in video game OSTs
must be a large fan of atlus
@@heater1237 that or maybe Simply Dad (Mark’s editor) was the one who put the Atlus related OST since he’s a Megaten fan. Still either if it was him or mark, they did pick a lot of bangers.
AGREED
So much Tekken and Sega goodness
Gotta agree
Seemingly the only thing I can say has improved in the later seasons (besides the great animation) is how Karen seems to have actually gotten better over time.
Initially she almost only existed just to give Plankton someone to play off of that isn't from the Krusty Crab, and she was usually limited to having a stern tone in her voice.
But later on I noticed how fun and expressive she's become. Which I bet some people will feel like it's out of character, but given the context of who her voice actor actually is, you can tell she's just having a lot of fun these days, so I can't help but get sweet vibes from Karen. Her development was cool.
I think Plankton and Karen were the two characters who improved past season 3
She has gotten hotter hasn't she.

Up until about mid s8-s9 I had vivid memories of seeing every episode on TV, even how some of them were promoted. Seeing some of these episodes for the first time, especially from a show that was my entire childhood, was surreally sad.
I stopped watching around then too and even seeing it in HD is weird 💀
Yep, thats when i stopped watching too
i remember whatever happened to spongebob? being SO HYPED UP. the ads were like “OH MY GOD HE HAS AMNESIA… WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO HIM???????” & then it was mediocre as heck
@@synodicseason The one I remember being hyped the most for no reason was "It came from Goo Lagoon". I had stopped watching at that point but the advertisement made me tune back in for that one
@@Jake_is_Miffed I remember Best Day Ever's massive dumb promotion and then the special turning out pointless.
Don’t stop doing these bro, I’m hoping to see American Dad or Futurama next but I’m here for anything that’s reviewed, good stuff mark keep it up.

The problem with Futurama is that it's basically all really good so it be less interesting of a video imo. Yah there is the occasional dud but even the later seasons have some of the best episodes they ever made.
I love American Dad as well but I can see that getting more grating on a long watch so it's a good idea imo.
@@Pussyrepelent it’s his job to make videos 🤷🏽♂️ Atleast he don’t quit like Cory every 9 months
I don't know why, but as a kid the episode Grandma's Kiss always made me tear up.
Maybe it's Spongebob crying about how he still wants to be loved like a little kid by his grandma, and me feeling the same.
Same
That whole episode made me uncomfortable when I was younger, idk
I find it weird that Spongebob gets unconditional love from his Grandma no matter how old he gets while everyone made fun of him for it, which the writer still includes as the episode's final punchline. Felt strangely cruel for the time
I knew it wasn’t just me haha, that episode makes me so sad for no reason
6:29:43 I got so giddy when this theme started playing TEKKEN HAS SUCH GREAT MUSIC
This video taught me two things a SpongeBob marathon would take forever and LSMark has great taste in video game music.
yeah all the songs are CATCHY 🎶🎶🎶🎶
it's actually the editor who decides what music is played not LSMark
Especially from Sonic adventure 1
At this point he could rank all the episodes of the Pokemon anime and I would've expected it
They have the gimmick ost in crying out loud of course he has great taste in video game music
Unless you’re implying that they can all see into the future 24/7
It just seems like a big “causation doesn’t inherently equal correlation” or whatever type thing.
And the entire episode was boarded and scripted years before fnaf ever existed 💀
I’m paraphrasing hard (cause i’m not sifting through 3 billion episodes) but this general topic was talked about on the pizza party podcast by a guest whose worked for tv broadcasted cartoons and essentially they said that as much as its fun to believe that the people behind these things are these crazy calculating, vindictive, megalomaniacal guys that are just drowning in corporate espionage and playing 4D chess with the outside world-
At the end of the day, the truth is rarely that interesting;
they’re just guys tryna do a job and often have 0 insight into the future a lot of the time and have 0 control over airdates so coincidences are just bound to happen occasionally.
