    If You soak the knives in hot water for a short time, when removing and reattach the scales, they will last for longer and may not break to much.

    The micarta scales look great! There's a cavity under the multi-purpose hook where you can store the pin. I store a sewing needle wrapped with a few feet of thread along with a small rare earth magnet within the curved hook part. You can use the magnet to magnetize the pin and make an improvised compass.

    Oh! I thought you were disappointed of Victorinox. Greetings from a distant country.
    As shown in SAKWiki, there was a knife model discontinued in 2017 known as "Duke of Edinburgh" with the 1.3403.NP code and exactly the tools you show: a "Compact" (1.3405) but with Phillips-2 screwdriver in the back instead of corkscrew. But the "Duke of Edinburgh" had rounded tip for the blade and a special "DofE" logo next to the shielded scale.
    So in fact you did a super-custom "Duke of Edinburgh".
    I modified few of my Vic knives at some point...it is harder than it looks like, since a rivet can be overtighten and the tools associated with that rivet will be too hard to open.
    For the central rivet you took, since it doesn't have securing ring like the rivets at the extremes, the form of the head of that rivet should be maintained, so a good practice is to buy a brass rod of the same diameter, cut to size and use a hammer to form the heads, instead of putting the old rod, as a hard effort on the screwdriver could end in a disassembly of the beloved knife...but looks to me you were lucky.

    • @EDCQ
      @EDCQ  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! Yes, I was very lucky getting this knife reassembled and functioning properly.
      I’ve never heard of the Duke of Edinburgh model but I will definitely try to track one down.
      Thank you so much for watching and commenting!

    Ah the compact. The straight pin has been surprisingly useful for me. Ink pen has saved many days too! So great...

    • @EDCQ
      @EDCQ  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I actually have some scales in coming that can house both those items… might be switching the scales out and adding the pen and pin back. They really can be useful and are so small, why not.

    Omgs for a moment I though you were about to say "If this goes poorly I'll be searching for another husband" 😂 My wife always points out that I'm a guy of many talents but taking a decent picture isn't one of them!!
    Anyways, I'm always surprised by the corkscrew/philips divide across the atlantic. I came across this vid as I was looking at 'hybirising' a tinker deluxe with a compact. That is, replacing the philips and the hook on the deluxe with the corkscrew and 'filed' hook from the compact to get what I think used to be the "climber deluxe" of days gone by (with the added filed hook as a bonus).

      Came here to say the same thing. I find that I can usually reuse the scales if I remove them when they're nice and warm, about as hot as you can comfortably hold the knife.

    Nice work, A! The green Micarta scales are a great idea.
    As for the parcel hook, you can look online and find a LOT of uses for it, such as twisting and bending wire.

    • @EDCQ

  • @stevenhodgson834

    Haha, that looked a fiddly and frustrating task! Up until recently (when they discontinued a lot of models) it was pretty easy to find a model that was "the same as X, but with tool Y instead of Z". For example the Fieldmaster is a Huntsman, but with the 3D Philips instead of the corkscrew.
    I've always thought it would be great if Victorinox did a "build your own knife" product, where you chose the size, tools and scales yourself.

    • @EDCQ
      @EDCQ  ปีที่แล้ว

      That was insanely frustrating. I really wish they made all knives with a corkscrew or Philips option, I think the choice would be awesome.
      I absolutely love your idea of build your own, I would so do this. Probably have a few!

    Hi A. Cool project . I like the look of the new scales. I never liked the 3D screw driver myself and when I used to carry my tinker I would use the can opener end with the small flat head instead for the Phillips driver , so I prefer the cork screw over the 3d driver. I have edc'd the tinker , cadet , forester and the classic SD but lately I edc either the army ranger or the classic SD. I find the army ranger has all the tools I prefer but it's a little bulky but I'm ok with that but often I need a more discreet carry so I go with the classic SD. I have some other small multi tools and knifes that I like as well but the SAK army ranger so far is the closest to perfection for edc due to its tool set and size . Thanks for another great video . Thanks

    • @EDCQ
      @EDCQ  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much!
      The army ranger does look a little bulky but man does that thing have a lot of tools! You could handle almost anything with that. I LOVE the SD. It is keychain, mini, perfection. One of the best multitools in my opinion, and you can carry them anywhere they are so small.
      Thank you so much!

    Question please. Did you use a new pin or the same pin that you dremeled and punched out? If you used a new pin, where did you get it? Thanks.

    • @EDCQ
      @EDCQ  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The same pin. I was very lucky it still worked and fit. Not sure where you would get a new pin, maybe eBay or victorinox’s website.

  • @StevanMilesevic
    @StevanMilesevic ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Well done. Here's a thought though: since you lose the ball pen anyway, why not just buy a SuperTinker and swap the scales on that? You'd have all you wanted (scissors, Philips screwdriver etc.) but without all the hassle. Unless of course that was the whole point for you -- doing it as a project.

    • @EDCQ
      @EDCQ  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you!
      I actually have a Super Tinker. It’s a great tool but it is a layer thicker, this is thinner and makes a difference in pocket. If something ever happens to this one tho I will either buy an already modded one or will carry the Super Tinker.

    • @garthtimmins2852
      @garthtimmins2852 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a Deluxe Tinker that comes with all that plus light-duty pliers. The downside is that it is kind of big and bulky.

    I really want to try some modding, but I’m not sure I understand the basics… why did you use a Dremel instead of a drill? And how did you secure the pin after reinstalling? Did you need to get another one of those collars and peen it?

    • @EDCQ
      @EDCQ  ปีที่แล้ว

      I watched a few videos of other people switching out tools on a victorinox. Followed the steps the best I could with the tools I had. An excellent option would have been to make my own pin instead of trying to get that one back in. I’m definitely a novice at modding. Luckily this one worked out well and gets carried and used frequently.

    Definitely not going to mod a Swiss army knife 😂. Only thing about the camera angle, is the lighting. Light source needs to be above or behind the camera. When you hold stuff up to the camera, it's shaded.

    • @EDCQ

      I wouldn’t recommend it! 😂😂😂

      I agree! I’ve just for so long wanted a compact with the screwdriver and finally made my own. I absolutely adore this knife and it is by far my favorite SAK!!! But I do agree, and aside from potential scales, I probably won’t ever do that again to an SAK. They are amazing tools!
