  • An honest talk about the drawbacks that come along with working as a marine biologist and dive instructor at a small marine conservation organization in a rural location. I promise it's not all bad, but I definitely think this is an important video to watch if you are interested in a similar type of job.
    Absolutely no hate to the organization I worked for. I still view it as a dream job and an amazing experience. This video is simply a list of the things I wish I would have known more about prior to working a job like this, and some recommendations I would tell people interested in pursuing something similar!
    Hope you enjoy the video and stay tuned for the next videos in this mini series!

    Hey can you do a video on the difference between a deep sea marine biologist and a oceanographer

      I'll have to put that in my idea bank for future videos! Thank you for the suggestion.

    Thank you for making this video it was super helpful! I recently did a 10 month internship on an island (off of North Carolina) and definitely related to some of what you mentioned. Did you go to grad school?

      Hi! I'm so glad you found this useful! I have not been to grad school. My highest current degree is a bachelor's.

    What was the pay though? Everyone says “low” and never says a number. Your low could be different than my low

      In these kinds of jobs you should always look away from the money, because there‘s not going to be a lot. If he‘s working for a non-profit my guess would be if anything maybe a few hundreds and living costs.

      For a job like this, working in conservation and/or the diving industry in the Bay Islands of Honduras, you could expect to make somewhere between $800-$1,500 per month. There are definitely exceptions to this, but that number ranges based on the experience you have, the position you are working, and the organization you are working for.

      @@oceanscholar thanks for the transparency! I’m looking to transition from office white collar work to this kind of work and know it’ll be a huge cut, but this helps tremendously with budgeting and getting my affairs in order for the switch.

      @@80rippo59 you can say don’t do it for the money which is fine, but bills have to be paid at the end of the day so knowing the actual amount to compare and for budgeting is extremely important. It’s fine that it’s low, I don’t care about it being low, but it does matter what the amount is so I know how to budget properly.

      @@WeiseGuy91 you‘re right. In that aspect actually knowing some numbers would be great. I see the creator also answered you already so there they are. :)

    Hi. I love your Channel very informative!.
    I really want to do this course But I'm currently living in Vancouver Canada. Do you know if I can do this course online? Also can I do the science diving if I'm not a biology marine?

    • @oceanscholar
      @oceanscholar  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm so glad you've found this useful! This course was actually a job I had! And no it was not available online. I do believe you can do a science diving course without having a marine biology major, but I would contact an organization that offers science diving near you for more information!

      @@oceanscholar I'd love to!!! thank you! Very much appreciated. My dream was to become a Marine Biologist since I was very little. But I studied Interior Design. I'm really interested in changing careers. Better late than never... I would like to start to take some courses and hopefully I can find a job in some field of biology. Thank's again, I hope to hear from you soon. :)
