    I was and still am a fan of the Fleisher Superman cartoons. They had some good Superman adventures for their time and showed the type of hero Superman always was.

      Couldn't agree more, they're fun little things that one can still share with their friends and have a good time, me and my friends always had a good time with them.

    Incredible! I'm a fan of Betty Boop, so it's interesting to see them doing something more naturalistic and yet still so ambitious and visually stunning. I'm definitely checking these out!

    I consider JL The New Frontier to be a finale to these. It works well.

    For anyone interested in some of the stuff Max Fleischer did after he, his brother and Paramount Pictures broke up, check out some of these (rather obscure) Columbia Pictures/Screen Gems Shorts, he worked on a couple of them : th-cam.com/video/Op6_4e0mMN0/w-d-xo.html

    Wouldn't peter pan be the birth of the modern superhero?

    • @sergeantpanther678
      @sergeantpanther678  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Well, was Peter Pan's focus heroics, to be a bit of a symbol? In a way yes, but I'd argue he's a full on fantasy character living in a deliberate fantasy world. Superman, especially in this form is more of a (pardon the pun) New breed of genre character. Parts Hercules and yes, in small parts Peter Pan but being more representative of the (then modern) new york of the 1930s and the world view and social problems of somebody living there.

      @@sergeantpanther678 Peter Pan was focused on heroics. He saved the kids from the pirates. You don't remember the part where the pirates kidnap the kids and Peter goes to rescue them? Besides mermaids and fairies living there how was Neverland a full on fantasy world?

    • @festo8756
      @festo8756 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Why is it in your mind Neverland is a fantasy world but golden age Metropolis isn't. Keep in mind during the golden age mxyptlik and mermaids existed in supermans world.

      First off: Thanks for being so passionate and writing comments, it really helps me in the algorythm.
      Second: Thanks for being so passionate about this topic, I think you might really like the companion video to this one I did. (link at the end of the video or in the description.
      Main piece:
      Well I'm talking about really early stories where you could argue that superman was a reaction, to contemporary life in new york. After all his first appearance was just catching regular criminals.
      Mr Myxcnsdjkhnds (I'm militantly against spelling it right) was introduced in '44, when writers were doing more fanciful stuff with the character. But what I'm saying is Superman created the template for a mighty hero of the modern age, I was actually looking at some other characters for this like Hugo Hercules from 190X who was super powered yes... And is considered one of the candidates for the Title of the first superhero but... Well was deliberately evoking Hercules, a much older character. And also wasn't very popular, which is why I cut that bit for the sake of making the vid more snippy.
      Obviously this whole thing about definitions is fuzzy but there isn't an entire stable of Peterpans, flying with fairies, kids never wanting to grow up, elvish looks... Other than maybe Link from Zelda but you wouldn't go and call him a Superhero first, you'd probably call him a Fantasy Hero first.
      Superman set the template for superheroes for a long time, it's literally in the name, you can't call him anything else first without reaching. And that's what we call De Facto, Festo:
      He was De Facto the first modern Superhero without stretching.
      Man, I feel like I'm doing a Letter column at the end of an old comic. Really giddy about that fact ;P

      @@sergeantpanther678 Metropolis was based on Toronto not New York. That's why Clark Kent worked for the daily star. The newspaper of Toronto. Myxyptlick was created by Jerry Siegel and Joe shyster the creators of superman.
      Peter Pan protected Neverland from the pirates. Only Peter pan didn't grow up. The lost boys did.
      Peter pan had an arch enemy. Fortress of solitude. Girlfriend who gets captured by the arch enemy. And hero has final fight with villain.
      Did Hugo Hercules have any of that? Did Hugo Hercules have any of the superhero cliches.
