The fact a ship named after Marie Curie is straight up debris in this dead world with what remains of it diseased by the WAU, adds just another layer to how grim the game's setting is. Unless it's named after Microsoft Curie
From the fact that the remnants of MS Curie's crew are much more decomposed then others (and from records about the scavenger team) we can assume that it had crashed before the WAU took over Pathos II. As we can see in the video, the WAU had reached the wracked ship from the ground, possibly indicating another area connected to Pathos II (something like tubes, corridors or shuttle station). This theory is further supposed by the Curie itself being buried very deep, almost like it just pierced through the ocean floor into the mentioned area.
I've always been fascinated with this unique ship. It also has (in my opinion) one of the best moments in the entire game, and that is when the reactor explodes and you have to run back to the escape pod. Not that the gameplay is spectacular, or that it's scary but the sound effects! Those god damn sound effects of the whole ship breaking down, it's so damn immersive. All of the sound design in soma is in my opinion masterfully done. I've once heard that soma has 18000 sound files for all of it. Throwing cups vs chairs onto metal or structure gell. This often gets overlooked but i think it just adds that much more to how great soma is. Truly frictional's magnum opus, and my third favorite game of all time, with my favorite narrative of all time
I have an absolute obsession with Soma's lore. So much unknown not known and it's thanks to you and other TH-camr's who make the unknowns of the lore known bit by bit of course. Hopefully we get a Soma 2 and it's either a prequal where we get to experience the calamity of the world being destroyed and where we have to activate the WAU to save it or a sequel where we're Simon again and we have to go back to get the other copy of Simon and their mission is to escape the ocean and get back onto land and try to build their world or one Simon turns evil and the one we left sleeping has to survive the end game Simon.
The fact that Simon was a legacy scan as part of David Munshi’s AI neurography development kit means that there could’ve been countless other resurrections of Simon throughout the world, possibly some still around by the end of the game, in other underground facilities around the world (I would not at all be surprised if PATHOS II was the only one, plenty of underground military/government complexes in mountain ranges).
I wonder if the WAU is actually taking advantage of the MS Curie's reactor as a additional source of power, that would explain why it keeps it stable and functioning. Maybe it was even utilizing it as a backup power source since Upsilon is/was failing.
From what I've researched semi submersible vessels don't submerge that deep, just enough to sink most of the deck (a few meters). I highly doubt the WAU was responsible to what happened to the Curie since it is at the very bottom of the ocean. The ship should also have survived the almost a year or so since the comet destroyed earth, and most modern ships hulls can last like more than a decade. I think it either crashed with another ship or the crew messed up and there was some kind of explosion.
Could you do one on the WAU itself next? Obviously including the heart itself, and if possible a sort of overview of site alpha from above (that place is a maze and hard to get your bearings). But also maybe some of the other manifestations throughout pathos 2 if they seem interesting. Dunno if there's enough to make a video out of it but if you're also doing architecture and objects on top of the entities then the wau feels right. You could maybe show what happens behind the scenes when simon shoves his arm in the WaUssy if that's possible.
It's crazy to think that something like this actually exists. It's such a strange sea vessel. It's also crazy how much it has changed since this was an early map for early in the game.
man this game made me genuinely so depressed when it first came out, once i realized in the setting that humanity and likely all of earths large terrestrial fauna had been wiped out. tbh these aspects of the game still make it difficult for me to replay (the biology student with a bleeding hearts curse) but man i cant describe how good it felt whenever i saw a living organism unaltered by the wau when i got to the ms curie. even just the coral and macro algae around the ship had me REALLY reluctant to progress further since i knew i wouldnt be able to return. i still kind of wish the game had a mercy kill ending because for some reason the idea of the ark always creeped me out more than anything waiting back on earth did tbh.
It's really interesting to see that the vessel was designed to operate in different orientations! I also really enjoy the little peek into the early development version of SOMA, with different factions and differently looking areas (that old reactor room looks really eerie to me), like seeing what SOMA could have been like, while also naturally appreciating what it actually did become! I believe it was better off without the factions, so that it would feel much more like a lonesome and isolating adventure. Probably not comparable, but Outlast II seemed to feature factions, and it confused me greatly, but that might just be me.
The Early SOMA was certainly a bit more of a "whimsical" adventure if that makes sense, the current version is a grittier, gloomier themed story with some science fiction sprinkled in between
any information for the door at 8:28 ? you can get to it by just jumping over to it. it has a unique interact prompt but will softlock you if you enter, its a completely pitchblack room, with no textures. not even the flash light works. But you can still hear your footsteps. was wondering what it looks like in the map viewer. theres also a glitch where if you skip picking up Catherine, once you enter the ship, parts of the map completely unload for some reason. this glitch slightly changes the rest of the game in weird ways if you continue playing. sound effects are slightly off and monster ai can break, especially at theta. had the server room proxy somehow glitch his way to the starting area bay doors
well I did zoom in a little and there is nothing behind it, so I guess you either float in the void or if there is a leftover loading trigger behind you will bring you to the next map but the placement is messed up, since it´s not the way you are supposed to get in

I have a suspicion it might just be a shortening or joke on "courier"
@@CreeketsCreekYeaah, I thought the same thing, since Curie's was supposed to deliver products from a region to another

makes sense, the shuttle train tunnel goes in that direction as well

Yep, in terms of sound design Frictional is at the top of their game with SOMA
the underwater soundscape is unmatched
@@umukzusgelos4834 indeed, the abyss especially, just the muted explosions you hear, either from vulcanic or tectonic activity is just chef's kiss

that´s very plausible
could explain why the Flesher is so hostile, want´s you to get your grubby hands of the power

The fact that the emergency lights are still on after who knows how many years of being in that wreck state is really haunting

WAU will certainly be subject at one point

Wohoo! Another SOMA video, here we go! We love your work m8
6:21 Aww, what a cute hammerhead shark ❤
A happy thanksgiving, kind stranger. Your enthusiasm for SOMA and Frictional games is a delight.

What if a Leviatan is what damaged the vessel making it sunken to the bottom of the ocean ? That thing is big and strong enough to pierce metal
Possible, though considering were they usually dwell I find it unlikely for it to swim up to the surface

Reminds me a lot of the US Navy R/P FLIP
Awesome showcase! Curie also had a server room in the old version in which u would kill the flesher in, but the room itself is nothing special.
hammerhead's like "hulloo"

Love your stuff dude, Soma is such an awesome game and its great to see you putting so much time and effort into these deep dives. ❤
Thank you
Take a look at the destroyed earth in the soma editor for the next video
It might be weired but I like old Curie more.
As the new one is basically "Oh wow flesher is gonna make you wish you never played this game"
This Ocean was so dark that I can't see
How did you get access to the older versions of the game?
Through a Modd that restored them, I used the same for the Proto Flesher Video:
