Before I go into my description, here are the tabs! Though I advise you to read the rest too, since it mostly covers the transcription process and my issues with it. I decided to split up some chords between the guitars because that made for a more coherent tab, even though it sounds slightly different in the recording.
    GP5: drive.google.com/file/d/17XQU...
    PDF: drive.google.com/file/d/1SXjM...
The reason I was doing this video was actually the tab. I don't really think I had to record a playthrough for this song. I felt kinda indifferent towards it, even though it's definitely a cool song. Hell, this was my jam when I was around 19 years. I was a huge fan of this album. I always wanted to learn this song but back then there were no accurate tabs. Some time later I got into transcribing and started doing this song. But there were some parts I couldn't make out. Kinda lost the motivation for it, just did the solo and recorded a video for that. That was it. This half-finished tab has been sitting on my hard drive for years now and it's been on my bucket list ever since.
Because I usually share my tabs and because that's the actual reason for me finishing it, I made a video too. But just playing it on, you know, regular speed and stuff, would be boring, right? I mean, I already have a video for the solo! Why do the same thing again? I think this was a good compromise for me to challenge myself and to also play the original "slow" version for you.
Originally I didn't plan on recording this in one take. I had planned two seperate takes with a small cut in it. But I practiced it the way you see here and it went suprisingly well with that mid-song speed up. The playthrough is not perfect. I'm a bit early on some notes. Some of the tapping notes are a semitone higher, but you'll barely notice on the faster tempo. The faster shred parts could be cleaner/clearer. I also play the second fast alternate picking run slightly different. But for a full 5 minutes playthrough I'm satisfied enough to share it.
    Now to the tab!
The issue with the tab were the chords right in the first bar. The last two of it. It's actually just a minor third. Nothing special. Or so I thought. The longer I listened to the song and all the times those chords are played the less sure I was. There's definitely some low end in them that sounds like the third doubled an octave lower. So root, major sixth, octave. For most of the transcribing process I was sure its a three note chord. But sometimes when the chords are repeated in different sections it sounds like the low note is missing on one of the guitars. But not on the other one. I couldn't make sense of it. The highest note is also not always quite audible.
So here's what I was able to hear. In the intro section it sounds like a three note chord, but the left guitar sounds a bit more pronounced on the low notes and the right guitar on the high notes. Could be the differences of two guitar players. But Muhammed, as far as I know, recorded this alone. So it should be quite consistent in terms of attack and how he mutes the notes, or at least somewhat consistent, considering this was recorded in 1998. But it's a hell of a clean record for that. Then it might be that the guitars are eq'd slightly different. Left guitar less mids, right guitar more. Sounds like it. But, and that's what I settled for in the end, he could've split up the three note chord into a lower and higher two note chord. I can definitely hear this approach on some of the open chords (bar 11 in the tab).
What I do think actually is, that he used all of the above. In the intro it might be the three note chords but later when those chords are repeated in that picking passage that has some short tapping in it, it sounds like they are split up into left low and right high. Problem is, it doesn't sound consistent enough throughout the song to make a proper decision on it. I know Necrophagist use both intervals (a minor sixth is prominent in the Seven intro and thirds are prominent in many songs) The full three note chord is actually one I don't see much. But the songwriting, for me, also seems a lot more "random" than Epitaph for example. So it's possible that things don't make as much sense. The time signatures are also part of that whole "feeling a bit more random". Based on all this I could've made three versions of the tab:
1.A tab of what I actually hear
2.A tab with the full chords everytime they come up
3.A tab with clearly seperated voicings based on what I can hear and what would make more sense to me.
I settled for the third version, just to get this video and tab out. Actually, my playthrough is a bit mixed, I do play the full three note chord sometimes. I might upload different versions later, because I still have to fix the time signatures in the solo! Enjoy the video!

Same here! A nostalgic tech death song for me and I was also always bummed about the lack of good covers and tab. Hell, there's not a single live video of that song, but I do think they played it at one time (think I saw a setlist somewhere with that song, but I could be wrong).

Thanks, the sound was actually the reason it took me so long to get this video out. I already recorded this over a week ago haha. I thought my recording tone was good enough with only minor tweaking necessary for the mix, but of course, I was wrong lol. Took me a lot of reamping to be satisfied with something and I wanted to come close to the original guitar tone, because that one is legendary for me :)
Well, I still have that cover of Scorched on my channel ;-) Other than that, Eve of Contempt was always a song I wanted to record, but it's not really a priority for me right now.
Next up are two classical pieces, actually one is from the baroque era and the other one from the romantic era. And another Gorod song, but for a technique demonstration and potential tutorial, because that song taught me that specific technique!

Well, that description was necessary. I actually would've needed another one for all the stuff I wanted to list from the tab. All the stuff that might be different from the record and all my thoughts about it. Because you might play from the tab and notice something sounding slightly different. But there's probably a reason why I tabbed it that way. Though all the single note stuff should be pretty accurate. It's just some of the palm muted chords where I couldn't decide 100% and the time signatures of the solo that still need fixing :)

Haha yeah the chorus riff of "To Breathe In a Casket" is a classic. The only issue I have with the song is its repetitiveness and that kind of sucks for a cover video. I still have a finished tab of "Mutilate The Stillborn" which I never shared. So that one might get a video some time.

On a real note, thanks for your hard work and dedication, and of course for sharing with us! I first picked up guitar after listening to Necrophagist for the first time over 10 years ago and used to feel it was impossible to play their music without years and years of experience. Even experienced players could have trouble with this style of playing. Imagine my thoughts when I started seeing your covers not only spot on, note for note, but even sped up! Sheer ridiculousness, but a fantastic display of your hard work. I still play guitar off and on and periodically view your content for inspiration. I hope you are well and healthy and if dreams come true I would love to hear some original content! I remember a solo of your own and it was awesome, sounded unique and like the work of a mad scientist haha.
Thanks again for sharing your work and being a source of inspiration for myself and others

    • @KevinHeiderich
      @KevinHeiderich  ปีที่แล้ว +4

Well, as long as you don't compare my opinions to Joe Rogans, everything is fine haha
Hehe thanks, btw I am glad I didn't listen to Necrophagist yet when I started with the guitar. I see way too many guitarists these days trying to play those tech death songs way too soon. Build your regular metal chops first before starting with tech death. I mean, it's called technical for a reason. It builds upon the foundations of death metal, and that itself on the foundations of metal. So that should be the roadmap.
Also on another note, I've noticed that tech death lost it's kind of forward thinking attitude, as well as the progressive component. If you listen to Blotted Science or Spawn Of Possession, they are not just hard to play. They also have a progressive structure and play with rhythms and odd time signatures. Nowadays tech death is just regular metal with a few flashy parts in it. (First Fragment is an exception of course!)

    • @UndeadBed
      @UndeadBed ปีที่แล้ว

@@KevinHeiderich Couldn't agree more about building chops before attempting tech death, my problem was I'd only listen to tech death and had this elitist attitude that all other forms of music was inferior. I've since grown out of that mindset thankfully haha. Nowadays I like to try to learn some parts by ear and practice basic triads and their inversions to familiarize myself with the fretboard, trying to undo years of tab reliance...
I also agree with the lack of progression in tech death, prime example for me is many bands on Artisan Era; to be clear I think many of those bands are talented and indeed play technically difficult music, but they seem boring or lack brutality that I got from Spawn of Possession, Beneath the Massacre, Origin, etc (definitely don't mean ALL of their bands, I personally like Dark Matter Secret and Aethereus). Maybe I'm just getting old and don't know where to look haha

I think I played through the song twice in front of the camera without actually recording and this was the first take with the camera running. I still spent an hour more trying to get a smoother one but was not really successful haha. If you're wondering why I have some practice runs in front of the camera without recording them: I always do that because I usually play in a different position than my recording position, and those camera "practice" runs really make a difference and it also saves some battery, because the first playthroughs usually suck anyway :D

That doesn't mean I'm not interested in writing my own stuff and releasing it (some day). Just means I'm doing it all on my own. And the reason you haven't heard anything yet is because I'm really slow at writing haha. Some day, some day.
If I would form a real band, I'd still have the issues of finding people. That's always a hassle. And in general, balancing life/work with bands is difficult, not just for me, but for the other people that would be in that band too. That's basically why I'm not interested :)

Unfortunately there is no really good cover of this song on youtube. Only you could handle it. But i wish it was regularly with all parts.

I’m curious as to what it is that you want to get out of watching a person cover a song?
If you just want to listen to the regular song you could listen to the actual album.
If you want something that assists in learning the song I think this is great regardless of tempo.
If you want to see someone else’s interpretation of a song, personalised in some way to their own style of playing, then this is exactly that.

I'm sorry! Though I do play through all the parts on regular tempo once because the second half of the song is basically just the first half repeated, so there are no new parts in the faster half. I already covered the solo years ago which is still on my channel, and that's why I decided to do it this way, starting at the solo section. To be honest, some of the early Necrophagist songwriting is a bit drawn out and this makes playing through it a bit more interesting for me.
Also, according to the TH-cam analytics, most people only watch half a song and/or the solo most of the time, so this might engage them more, and if not then nothings lost anyway (current average of this song is just 2:17 minutes). I think it's a good compromise, you get the regular half and another half which bumps up the technique, since it's technical death metal after all. A lot of my viewers are interested in demonstrations of advanced techniques and this definitely features some of them.
Anyway, I do understand your issue with it, and it's something I'm always thinking about when I prepare a song for TH-cam. On one hand I also like pure playthroughs and videos, with no fluff or distractions, on the other hand, it can be quite boring, depending on the song. My TH-cam channel was always more of a "songs that challenge me" kind of thing and not a "new cover every week". The footage was actually meant for auditions because that's what I wanted to do, play for bands. That's how I usually select songs, based on difficulty and to show "hey, that's what I can do, in case you want me to play in your band". I did record some "regular" songs that were just fun to play, but I don't really see the point in me doing that constantly here on TH-cam.
And the last reason: I wanted to finish the tab and I only recorded a video to share the tab here :)

it's very easy to play over the original song, because mistakes and bad execution are not noticed. There are several notes that are taping and you don't play them, because the original backing music plays and makes your cover sound decent. I recorded a cover without music behind, maybe that would be a good job. bye
