Alright guys, my dream offensive line has been sent into the ether. Little worried about Druski on the blind side, but I have conviction in my scouting. Who is your dream offensive line? (no NFL boys allowed)
"Speed" is probably the most misunderstood concept by football fans. Most people will look to a guy's 40 time to discern whether or not a player is fast. This metric only informs a players acceleration from a dead stop. It does not measure the most important aspects of playing Speed. For example how quickly can someone throttle down? How much does a guy throttle down before making a cut? Can he cut at full throttle? What's a players terminal velocity or long Speed. All of these examples are far more useful metrics for evaluating play speed. It baffles me that as data becomes more ubiquitous modern scouting has not evolved to create more predictive measurements. Also fans who like to get more granular in the ways they understand the game would love new toys to play with.
And also route running. Aside from Tyreek Hill the best receivers usually don't have the fastest top end speed because their route running is top notch
The Saints had kind of an unfair advantage having had so many games against Ridley when he was with the Falcons. They know how dangerous he is when he gets a totally free release in single coverage.
Also another thing that contributed to this was the horrible O-Line play. You can see Trevor getting pressured before he can do anything on so many plays
Thank you. Thats what this youtuber fail to see. The jags O line was terrible last year so T Law didnt have time to find Ridley down the field. Most of the time, T Law had to run out of the pocket to avoid getting sacked.
As a Jags fan I attribute Calvin Ridleys wasted potential to be a number of things that was plaguing us. 1. TLaw and Ridley were constant on different pages 2. The Jags were notorious for big gains getting turn apart by penalties 3. Ridley had a decent drop issue. Not big but decent 4. Ridley would sometimes give up at the top of the Route. Leading to picks 5. TLaw constantly felt the need to play Hero ball because his offensive line was utter garbage. 6. Because the o line was so trash.... Ridleys route running tree was very limited to deep comebacks
I went down to make this exact comment and saw I didn't need to lol. I'm a jags fan and I am confident he is gonna have a great year with the Titans now that he's not getting that X treatment
Brian Callahan is a coach that has tendencies to put players in the best positions to succeed. Seen this a lot in Cincy. They know what Calvin is best at, so I expect them to do what hes best.
I'm convinced the jaguars have been wasting talent everywhere. They have decent players on defense including what should be one of the better LB groups in the NFL yet their defense is slightly above average. This shows how they ruined using ridley and Lawrence took a step back. I think they got a new def coordinator and Brian Thomas JR may be a better fit than Ridley. Maybe they bounce back
When your defensive and offensive lines are horrible on the interior you're going to waste talent. If your interior O line sucks your offense will suck and same with the defense.
Thank you for this. So many fans/fantasy players claimed Ridley was washed last year, but JAX did not use him correctly at all and he still got 1,000 yards, like you mentioned. Using him as the X negatively impacted his ability to perform. It’s no coincidence that his best games of the season are games in which Zay Jones was healthy and operating as the X.
Most Jags fans already knew this thats why we needed another wideout at the X to keep Ridley at the Y and Kirk in the slot instead of solely relying on him to do everything.
That’s the future market rate for a young starting QB. I think they should have waited a year to give it to him to see how he performs because she’s certainty underwhelmed
@@ahastar1141 I mean the other alternative is finding another QB cheaper to pay that is on TLaw's level at 24 yrs old that is worth the long term contract. Talked a lot about that Browns game and didn’t show the plays Ridley straight up didn’t run routes so he could turn and argue with the ref once the play started
I agree with this assessment. Though I wonder if it could have been explained simpler as a #2 WR being missed casted as a #1? I also think Lawrence’s regression this past season plays a factor. Good video..
I think on the ball vs off the ball is much better than 1 or 2. Some teams' #1s are on the ball and some teams' number #1 are off the ball, so not sure how that would clarify anything.
Biggest reason Ridley played so much X was because of Zay Jones being hurt so much and missing most of the season. Zay was the only bigger bodied receiver that could line up on the line which is why it was such a huge deal when he went down.
You're assuming Ridley was the target on all those plays. The jags have a platoon of good targets, as opposed to the falcons. Maybe Ridley was a decoy on those plates. Also, he was running the wrong routs on key hot plays and third downs.
As a Jags fan, I’m glad that somebody has finally realized that Gabe Davis is Ridley’s replacement. Too many people saying we drafted Brian Thomas Jr. to replace Ridley.
Great video! I never knew about the differences between the "X" and the "Z" in regards to lining up on or off of the line, and regardless to preferred skill set and body type! Also, I do believe that the Jaguars may have blown their window last year, and that they wasted some elite talent. In addition to Calvin Ridley, they had an elite Running Back, an elite Tight End, and a receiver that had 1,000 yards the previous season (Christian Kirk). I was willing to argue that they had one of the best skill position groups in the league. Do you know how many teams would wish to have a group like that? They also had a 5-2 start that they squandered. The way that they handled Trevor Lawrence's injury during the last month of the season was horrible. But, who would you hold at fault for squandering this talent? Coach Pederson? The coordinators? The Lawrence injury, and the way that it was handled?
He also dropped multiple game winners. The fact is he was rusty. He had so many chances to have more yards and touchdown but he didn’t preform in big moments. Talk about Calvin Ridley dropping passes and touchdowns. He’s the reason his stats are that. Dropped at least 3 tds I can remember. Several first downs
Stud, true #1 receivers could play on and off the ball. Rod Smith didn’t need motion or space to get open. He got open and fought for ever yard. That’s elite talent in action. Unfair comparison for Ridley, but he should aspire to greatness.
Why would you take someone that can play well and force them to do something else? You don't take a Darren Sproles type RB and try to turn him into a 3 yards and a cloud of dust battering ram. You try to maximize what you have. One of the jaguars problems in this respect is that their TE Engram is barely a TE so hes not great at lining up on the line either. Basically their whole team is off the line type finesse players, which is why someone like Gabe is a sorely needed addition - someone who is both a deep threat but also a more physical player. Ridley probably should have been the one to play off the line though, he gives you the biggest upside from the guys we had when he wins.
@@BlGDaddyRob Not only are they finesse players but they were saved by consistently good scheming which explains the pass production in 2022. Show how many times ridley ran the wrong route or dropped the ball. Tf being lined up on the Los have to do with catching and running your designated route?
TLaw was awful last year for his standards. Ridley had a 4.4% drop rate, 6 on 136 targets. According to PFF, average drop rate among recievers with 52+ targets is 6.7%. Ridley was 33% better at catching than the average nfl receiver. Ridley also ranked 82nd in catchable targets, at 64.7%. When adjusted to compensate, his true adjusted catch rate is about 86%. Meaning if TLaw threw Ridley 10 *good* balls in a game he would come down with 8 or 9 of them.
.........yes it is the Jaguar fault for using his skill set incorrectly. " A completely different player was able to do it despite also being small" irrelevant That's the equivalent of getting a small QB just because you saw Drew Brees be successful while being small. Even if people are similar, they still have individual skill sets and it is your job as a coach and a team to bring out the best of that skill set if you're using it incorrectly. It is undoubtedly your fault. Non-debatably
@@dishantithomas4198 so he’s a limited player that can only get open when the defenses play some type of soft coverage? the standards could not be any LOWER
@@patek9789 literally every player has a limited skill set it is your job as a coach to use that skill set correctly IDC how good you think Edelman is he's not winning jump balls like Calvin Johnson IDC how talented you think Calvin is he's not running routes like ochocinco IDC how talented you think ocho is he's not as sure handed as Larry Fitzgerald IDC how talented you think Larry is he's not as fast as Tyreek Hill IDC how talented you think Tyreek is he's not as good of a blocker as Brandon aiyuk Etc etc every player has a specific skill set and it's your job as the coach to put them in the best position to utilize that skill set. If you cannot do it then you're just not a good coach. It's very straightforward
Imo the team's problems all trace back to offensive scheming. So Press Taylor and Doug Pederson. They both better be gone if Jax and Trevor don't really step up this year.
“Out of position” you don’t know ball brother he dropped at least 9 passes 5 of which were tds. Position doesn’t correlate to on or off the ball. Ridley was running the wrong routes constantly too along with giving up on plays. Ridley wasted our time.
it was not the Jags fault when Ridley consistently ran the wrong routes and dropped multiple big throws and would be TDs. plus he only had one 1000 yard season prior to joining the Jags so not sure how you can possibly consider him elite
Calvin Ridley isn’t elite the dude can’t catch he dropped a lot of passes and he couldn’t catch a cold in winter that’s how bad he was and he ran the wrong route majority of the time
Trevor Lawrence was ass last year would only get ridley involved last year after yall were getting spanked and no chance of coming back. that contract yall gave Lawrence is ridiculous if we going by last year.
Well he would have had about 1300 yds and 12 tds if he didn't drop so many balls including about 3-4 tds I can think off the top of my head. Let's not act like the Jags got the same exact Ridley his first year back after missing two years he was deff rusty.
they tried using him as a Z, Zay jones got injured they asked Ridley to step up and be a big boy and he couldn't. numerous drops and poor concentration on near misses made him underwhelming but he had every opportunity. the guy had 910 yards through the air out of over 1600 attempted air yards. Dpi and some other stuff interfered, sure, but realistically the guy cant win at the line of scrimmage and doesn't win after the catch. Way too much of a specialist
Kirk was 5'11, Zay Jones was 180 lbs and less talented...So who was the expecting to take on press coverage? Now that the Jags have BTJ. Ridley would have been able to be in a better role had he stayed. So what sold him with the Titans is that he could play that off the ball role and not have to worry about being pressed off the line as much.
Dougie P is a good dude, not a good coach and Press Taylor is only in the NFL because Doug loves for some unknown reason. This video epitomizes what Eagles fans felt about this duo and I'm sure Jags fans feel.
The Jaguars are the definition of solid. Qb meh if he didnt have an elite 3 game strech 2 years ago we would call him a bist. Rb really good. Wrs solid to good te above average the defense solid but nothing elite to hang you hat on
So basically Ridley never learned, nor cared to learn, how to beat press. For a receiver who doesn't like press, although I don't think any receiver does, a thousand yard is amazing.
@Sunshine4prez-kt8eb Not saying everyone wants or cares to be the best. But is that not embarrassing to be in the league that long a kids fresh out of college that have less speed and a similar built (Justin Jefferson) can beat press? Not shaming the guy. I’m just super surprised looking at this tape.
Only being able to have success if the offense is specifically catered to the one thing you are capable of doing is nitpicking a quality of elite players. Ridley was consistently out of position and it came out about halfway through the season and he doesn’t even know the offense. Make all the excuses for him you want. Trevor consistently forced the ball to him and when Kirk went down - he couldn’t pick up the slack.
ok so I’m a jags fan and I can tell you we didn’t waste nothin. First off if Christian Kirk never got hurt rid would not have even sniffed 1k yards. And second, he was not in sync wit Trevor and he ran the wrong routes on plays and dropped like so many deep balls and touchdowns. No we did not waste anything and I’m glad he’s gone to the titans, it’s like where old washed receivers go to die.
2022 offense was play called by Doug P. 2023 offense was play called by his OC Press Taylor. He also did this during his time with the Eagles. Pederson's big flaw is that he gets too cute with offensive continuity by not choosing to do what he does best.
@@AlexRollinsNFL He quit on his team not long after that. Then got suspended. Looks to me that Jax had less playmakers and they needed to use him on the line of scrimmage due to him being the best they had. Had he stayed in Atlanta perhaps he could have been the guy in his spot. he deserves some fault for his situation. Will Levis may not be the guy for him either this year. We'll see.

So it’s the Jaguars fault for him not being good at beating press coverage? Julian Edelman wasn’t big either and could beat press coverage
Thank you
.........yes it is the Jaguar fault for using his skill set incorrectly.
" A completely different player was able to do it despite also being small" irrelevant
That's the equivalent of getting a small QB just because you saw Drew Brees be successful while being small.
@@patek9789 literally every player has a limited skill set it is your job as a coach to use that skill set correctly
IDC how good you think Edelman is he's not winning jump balls like Calvin Johnson
IDC how talented you think Calvin is he's not running routes like ochocinco
IDC how talented you think ocho is he's not as sure handed as Larry Fitzgerald
IDC how talented you think Larry is he's not as fast as Tyreek Hill
IDC how talented you think Tyreek is he's not as good of a blocker as Brandon aiyuk
Etc etc every player has a specific skill set and it's your job as the coach to put them in the best position to utilize that skill set. If you cannot do it then you're just not a good coach. It's very straightforward
@@dishantithomas4198 all those players are or were good at beating press coverage besides Ridley
Imo the team's problems all trace back to offensive scheming. So Press Taylor and Doug Pederson. They both better be gone if Jax and Trevor don't really step up this year.
6:28 of course he did well against the Titans because we ran almost no press ever, but he's ours now lol
And the funny thing is, this year we're going to press a ton.
@@vonstev1668hell yea you know it
“Out of position” you don’t know ball brother he dropped at least 9 passes 5 of which were tds. Position doesn’t correlate to on or off the ball. Ridley was running the wrong routes constantly too along with giving up on plays. Ridley wasted our time.
We Await Silent Trystero’s Empire
Edit: wait a minute, this is not a Thomas Pynchon video essay is it?
it was not the Jags fault when Ridley consistently ran the wrong routes and dropped multiple big throws and would be TDs. plus he only had one 1000 yard season prior to joining the Jags so not sure how you can possibly consider him elite
Calvin Ridley isn’t elite the dude can’t catch he dropped a lot of passes and he couldn’t catch a cold in winter that’s how bad he was and he ran the wrong route majority of the time
Ha, no he didn't
@@vonstev1668 yes he did he dropped a lot of passes and would run the wrong route a lot of times he’s been overrated
Trevor Lawrence was ass last year would only get ridley involved last year after yall were getting spanked and no chance of coming back. that contract yall gave Lawrence is ridiculous if we going by last year.
_In other news, the Jaguars currently have Trent Baalke as their GM._
Considering his previous history, let’s see how the team looks 5 years from now.
Glenny balls at left guard is a good move. Maybe the jags should consider
Throw some of his only fans chicks on the line too with him while we at it
Well he would have had about 1300 yds and 12 tds if he didn't drop so many balls including about 3-4 tds I can think off the top of my head.
Nice! Jack Black at Centre is sick!
Ridley said he wanted to be "the guy". Well he had his chance.
How did the jags make Ridley drop passes? He was bad last year in ways that defy the explanation that it was the Jags’ fault.
I just hope coach Cally uses him correctly and he helps Levis break out
Once Zay Jones got injured, it put Ridley in a tough spot having to be used in a way that didnt matich his play style.
So we need better coaches
Great video
Kirk was 5'11, Zay Jones was 180 lbs and less talented...So who was the expecting to take on press coverage?
Now that the Jags have BTJ. Ridley would have been able to be in a better role had he stayed.
So what sold him with the Titans is that he could play that off the ball role and not have to worry about being pressed off the line as much.
Looks like the Jags have a shitty GM then .
Zay is listed a 201 pounds
Dougie P is a good dude, not a good coach and Press Taylor is only in the NFL because Doug loves for some unknown reason. This video epitomizes what Eagles fans felt about this duo and I'm sure Jags fans feel.
Cant play Ridley off ball when you're other WR is Christian Kirk
“Elite” is not a word I’d use for Ridley
1300 yards even when not utilized correctly seems pretty good to me.
@@jakethompson9260had that with falcons
Why is druski on the line 😭😭😭
Just needs time to develop
Yeah it's unfortunate like so many other great players on teams that should've won
The Jaguars are the definition of solid. Qb meh if he didnt have an elite 3 game strech 2 years ago we would call him a bist. Rb really good. Wrs solid to good te above average the defense solid but nothing elite to hang you hat on
Sir the prince who was promised is the QB it’s 100% Ridley fault
you didn’t have to come for Wes Walker like that 💀💀
Hmmmm sounds a lot like Troy Franklin here 👀👀
So basically Ridley never learned, nor cared to learn, how to beat press.
14-1500 yards huh? Did you add up all his drops😂
Waste talent is the MO of the Jaguars.
Trent Baalke is the perfect guy to run their org. Take elite talent and surround it with mediocrity.
Nice of way saying he’s a ideally a number two. If you watched him in Atlanta you’d know this.
Eagles fired Pederson because he insisted on keeping Press Taylor at OC. Eagles made the right decision.
Not the fact that Ridley kept dropping the ball?
he was targeted 136 fucking times but he dropped everything
ok so I’m a jags fan and I can tell you we didn’t waste nothin. First off if Christian Kirk never got hurt rid would not have even sniffed 1k yards. And second, he was not in sync wit Trevor and he ran the wrong routes on plays and dropped like so many deep balls and touchdowns. No we did not waste anything and I’m glad he’s gone to the titans, it’s like where old washed receivers go to die.
the curl route was his LEAST efficient route and MOST ran route. coaching malpractice
Is Doug Pederson a bad coach? I’ve always thought of him as decent, but this issue of wasting talent consistently comes up..
I have a rule that if you win a SB you are officially at least a good coach
2022 offense was play called by Doug P. 2023 offense was play called by his OC Press Taylor. He also did this during his time with the Eagles. Pederson's big flaw is that he gets too cute with offensive continuity by not choosing to do what he does best.
Did the fact that Julio Jones drew more attention help him out at all?
Yes, but he also balled out when Julio was injured that year
@@AlexRollinsNFL He quit on his team not long after that. We'll see.
Druski don’t got the footwork for LT 😂😂😂
