    Lamar Jackson has evolved and is tearing up the NFL. Defenses have no idea how to rush him because he’s become as much of a passing threat, as he is a running threat. He is about to win his 2nd MVP and is about to lead the Ravens on a Super Bowl run that should go much better than it did in 2019. What has made him so good? And why can’t anybody come close to stopping him? This week’s episode uses the coaches all 22 to analyze Baltimore Ravens Quarterback Lamar Jackson.

    As a rabid Ravens fan....Greg Roman was the perfect coordinator for Lamar in 2018 & 19 (he wasn't officially the OC in 2018, but once Jackson took over as starter it was Roman's offense). In 2020 we started seeing signs that Lamar was ready for a more complex passing attack, but despite having all of the 2021 & 2022 seasons, with passing game specialists added for 2022, the Ravens aerial attack was severely limited both by talent at wide receiver and by Roman's play designs. By last year, most Ravens fans wanted a new OC in place, and thank goodness we finally got Monken (and some better receivers).

    Thank you.
    For explaining in detail Greg Roman tenure as Lamar OC.
    Fans have believed the organization didn’t try to help Lamar. While it didn’t happen immediately, although they were attempting, to build a strong WR room around Lamar.
    Roman was good for his development. The MVP year accelerated expectations for Lamar and that’s fair.
    However the organization has always supported Lamar and have done their due diligence when necessary. ~ Lamar’s college coach recently praised the organization for their dedication and due diligence in support of Lamar since before the draft. Most recently in their search for an offensive coordinator that would elevate Lamar.
    Also FTR
    I recently rewatched that 2019 game. Lamar played much better than the stats indicated. Although putting up over 500 total yards in any game is insane.
    The receivers had 7-8 drops. The very first was momentum changing.
    Greg Roman also 💩the bed in that game putting Lamar in a position / formations he hadn’t been in all season.
    Nonetheless,
    Context matters. Salute to you for providing such on this video

      I think another factor as well with the 2021 and 2022 season is how injury depleted we were those seasons. Ronnie Stanley was out most of those two seasons, all three of our runningbacks were out or struggling to come back ( Dobbins, Gus and Hill). Last year our wr depth was basically gone, Bateman was suppose to step up and become our #1 or at least a legit #2. Missed most of the season. Duverney was out half way through the season. I mean, we were starting DeSean Jackson later in the season.... Finally getting healthy and bringing in Todd Monkin made all the difference.

    The defense of Roman “early in his (Lamar’s) career” is bogus. The ravens had an objectively terrible WR room and passing scheme which they masked with Lamar’s legs, whether it was him running guys open or rushing. They leaned into narratives about him being a “running QB” which were blatant fabrications that completely ignored his passing performance in college with Louisville receivers. The ravens and Harbaugh used Lamar to bail them out in 2018-2019.

    • @maskedman5657
      @maskedman5657 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      No the defense is correct. I don't think that Lamar would have been near as successful or got MVP that early if not for Romans run schemes. Yeah he got predictable down the stretch but the Ravens were dang near unstoppable in 2019. And I don't just mean because Lamar. I mean their run game was almost impossible to stop.

      @@maskedman5657by 2021 Roman should have been fired. Their run game is still almost impossible to stop because when you have Lamar you can always scheme a run game. • @dsoshea06
      @dsoshea06 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Agreed. Roman ruined Jackson. Playing on his strength of running, Roman didn't and wasn't capable of taking Jackson's passing game to the next level. The Ravens brass didn't help in that regard by not firing Roman 2 years before they did.
      When teams have the defensive player talent to force Jackson to throw the ball, game over.
      The Steelers prove this as Jackson has a losing record against them and has more interceptions than TDs. Opponents copy the Steelers defensive scheme against the Ravens in the playoffs, contain Jackson by zoning the gaps and press the receivers.
      The legs give out first, so once Jackson slows down, he won't even be an average QB.
      And now with his salary taking over 20% of the team's cap money, talent at WR and the other 21 starting positions will soon thin out, not including the erosion of talent at the backup positions.
      Double-digit regular season losses on the horizon.
      Go Orioles!

      Even before Moss, and Gronk.
      Tom Brady had one of the most underrated pass catching backs of all time in Kevin Faulk early in his career. Then half a dozen more over the years. Fans would be surprised the “stats” Brady’s running backs have had over the years.
      Solid receiving rooms. No superstars, but talented enough to win Super MVP ~ Deion Branch. Wes Welker, the most dominant slot receiver ever. Edelman, Amendola, the TE talent.
      Brady was the ultimate distributor. Lamar is elite at it… and has improved his skills. His style is different but the results are similar. The Ravens have four different receivers with 35 or more catches… TE’s even before Andrews injury were contributing now they get receptions. All the running backs get touches in the pass game.
      That is both an intrinsic attribute for being a great quarterback, it is also a skill that has to constantly be worked on.
      Lamar has that as well, constantly working in the off season to improve. Then he is humble as well.
      I don’t get how fans “dislike” him. Quite honestly, how do they hate his style of play? I’ve been watching football for over five decades, and the most exciting players were always “beloved” even outside of their fan bases. As a fan of the game I don’t understand it. ~ I’m not naive either… I am assuming that can’t be the reason. We should be better than that. Shouldn’t we ?

      It wasn't just too vanilla but too predictable and doesn't attempt to attack defenses weaknesses in coverage. Especially in late passing downs when opposing defenses already KNOW what the play is while Lamar and his offense are still in the huddle. Also the condensed looks were played out too often which also limited Lamar's obvious threat to take off in space. So even in those passing situations the defense was ideally lined up to close in on his escape angles.

Teams are building offenses around the special talent players like this have and it is showing its dominance over defenses built to deal with pure pocket passers.

    • @fanboy50
      @fanboy50 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Nah, it really doesn't undermine it. For anyone that saw Lamar in the 2018 preseason (or watched him in 2018 period), it's entirely fair to say that first coming out of college his passing mechanics were kind of rough, in the same way that a lot of QBs' are coming out of college. There was developing that he needed to do. That's not because he wasn't a legitimate passer at Louisville, it's more that there's a big difference between what gets it done at the college level (even in Power 5 Conferences, or whatever they're called now that there's about to be only four) and what gets it done at the NFL level. But anyone who saw Lamar play in the 2018 preseason would be forgiven for assuming at that point that he was *at least* a year, if not two, away from being a "proper NFL-caliber starting QB".
      Now, I don't know how much his development is on Roman; it's clear Lamar is a smart man and has an insane work ethic, but what Roman *did* do was he built an offense that could play to Lamar's strengths as they were in 2018 (when his passing technique was legitimately pretty rough) and 2019 (when Lamar had already taken leaps and bounds forward and was already a capable passer, but was also a very young QB in his first full season as a starter) and help the Ravens be successful while he matured.
      One thing I don't think Alex covered, but which has struck me and impressed me about Lamar, is that periodically, a defensive coordinator or someone will "figure Lamar out" (commentator's and analysts' words, not mine; every player has a counter, that doesn't mean they've been "figured out"). They will come up with something that just utterly flummoxes him. There was that Miami game a couple years back where the blitz just disrupted Lamar to an insane extent. There was the Chargers in Lamar's first playoff game just staying in dime defense *all the time*. It's happened a few times. But it never works more than once. You might get one over on Lamar. You might outsmart him or find a flaw in his game to exploit once, but he always learns from it, and he punishes any opponent that thinks they can get away with the same trick.

But as Lamar has shown there are gaps that can be exploited as the defense has their own set of rules they follow for coverage.

Who takes the most dynamic qb and puts him in heavy formations instead of spreading the field with speed? This year was the ravens finally using common sense. Also Roman never allowed Lamar to audible or change protections. That alone should have got him fired three years ago

The condensed sets on passing downs took away Lamar's angles of escape as it also bunched up the front 7 to just straight up go downhill. Contrast to his threat to run in spread formations and also make pass plays has put immense pressure on opposing defenses to stay sound in their run fit.
