Just drove a GTS/4 Targa 6500 kms in 12 days all over Europe. 8 mountain passes 2500 kms on the Autobahn & 7 countries. Had a MB AMG GT 63 2 weeks ago on some of the same roads 2200 kms in 36 hours. The GT 63 was fast but the 911 was just so much more fun to drive.
Let me talk about mountains and tunnels. Cabriolet in the mountains is an unparalleled experience. The views are mindblowing. You see so much more with the top down. Your passenger will love it too. But the best part? The way the exhaust echoes of the mountian walls back into the cabin. It sounds like an F1 race. Tunnels too! But just driving past streams, waterfalls, overlooks - oh and sunsets with the top down!! At night you can look up see the milky way. If it starts to sprinkle drop to 30mph and the top goes up in 7 seconds. Highly highly recommend Cabs
Boxster 981S. Flat 6. Midnight Blue with full Luxor beige interior. Great handling, great sound, great look from every angle. Love it fully open, incredibly quiet with windows up if trying to have a conversation or listen to music (I prefer to listen to the flat 6 - glorious!).
The Targa wears the brake shield on its neck - above 100 km/h it gets uncomfortable and loud. Porsche would have to integrate wind tunnels to divert the wind flow. What the video shows excellently and unintentionally, however, is the iron-hard suspension set-up of the GTS (1st car). Rather not a daily driver. Thanks for the informative video and all the work! Best wishes from Germany.
Let me open by saying I’m not trolling anyone. As a long time porsche fanatic and owner of a few 911’s along with other Porsche’s, I have some strong opinions. In my opinion, a 911 Cabriolet is totally a chick car. One of my 911’s is a Targa 4S manual 992.1 and I love it. It looks better than a cab and I think is much more unique and I think safer too.
Cab is the best way to experience exhaust and surroundings- especially if you get to drive in beautiful countryside. Use the wind deflector and have the windows all the way up for the best usage. Use AC or heat as needed and you get an awesome, unparalleled driving experience.
You didn’t pop up the Targa’s wind deflector that is built into the top of the windshield. You would have had a much more enjoyable experience with that deflector popped up!

I always drive cab (not a Porsche) with the front windows up. When hot, ac is turned on, when pleasant temp, it is ideal to drive with windows up, when cold, heating is turned on.
Thanks so much for this. I don’t think anyone has done a full back-to-back comparison like this before. I am a former 991 gts cab owner and considering the targa since I agree that the looks are much better and I live in western Canada where the all wheel drive and more secure top is appreciated. I’m also a motorcyclist so wind doesn’t bother me but the “whomp whomp” buffeting does. This is a great breakdown and will help in making my decision. Cheers!
You may have left off the ceramic brakes on the GTS description, which is a $9k option. Very expensive build. The Targa is by far a better looking and more desirable car, and holds value better/longer. I have had both and your description of the ride/noise is spot on. I enjoyed the cab a lot, but the Targa is just plain special.
Cab all the way! The targa may look a little nicer but the cab can put the top up or down while driving up to 30ish mph. The targa has to be at a dead stop. It takes longer top put a targa top up or down. Imagine if it starts raining and you have to pull over and find a place to come to a complete stop and wait for the slower top to raise. Also you have to be careful to not have anything directly behind you because the glass top goes back farther than the bumper of the car. The glass roof is heavier and puts the weight up high making the car not as stable or handle as well as the cab. The cab has magnesium panels under the fabric so it is strong and well insulated for noise and temperature and much lighter. Get the heated cooled seats, heated steering wheel, burmiester for great clean loud sound, sport exhaust, sport chrono and you have the best of all worlds- quiet refined top up or sport or sport plus sporty driving top down with loud clean music or enjoy the top down sounds of the sport exhaust. To cool down after a spirited drive you can turn off the sport or sport plus a quiet the car down and soften the suspension and just cruise. Again best of all worlds and much less buffeting!
I sold my 918 for an incredible offer and received a Turbo S. It’s a great car but my 1997 Turbo is still my favorite. That whale tail just can’t be beat
Great review and hair Mike! Targa w/7 speed Stick is heaven. Odd how the cabin on Targa looks more confined vs Cab. Maybe seat height. Enjoy your presentations. ✌️
Ok cab is better with roof down but personally I don’t like the side profile with the roof up. Targa more buffeting with roof up but looks way better with roof up or down imo?
Gorgeous vid. Nice to see that the angle of the windscreen is the same as the non-convertible’s. Thats the right experience of open driving like mine Saab 9-3 OG convertible. About feeling secure in an open car…you have to have some skills to own a convertible, one of that is to have some authority 🤓 so people will not enter your car.
Cab all the time, because i like to drive open also above 100 km/h and then the Targa is horrible with all that noise. It is a pitty because it is a beautiful car.
I am your target market and local here about 1-mile from your dealership. Love the Targa but you guys have always made it hard to buy a car from you so I gave up.
I love my Targa Heritage Edition. Literally everywhere I go, I get a “nice car, man.” The Cab has such a strange looking butt-hump. If I had to pick, I’d take a Coupe before the Cab, and a Targa over both. One commenter mentioned the Targa’s enhanced resale value. That’s 100% true: It’s really hard to get ANY new Targa. In the DC area, it;s like an 18 month wait to get delivery of your allocation.
Ha, no, you didn’t miss it. I didn’t know the Targa had a deflector. I will go try the car again with the deflector and see what difference it makes. 👍🏼
was the wind declector real up at the targa? according from the vid I m not shure. i mean making such a vid without evern speaking about it does zero sence.
The wind deflector at the top of the windshield on the targa automatically goes up when the top is stowed, and cannot even be put down, so that’s why I didn’t mention it.
@@mikerusznak Sorry no, it does not do that in full. There are two stages of opening the wind deflector. The first is automatic. The second must be operated manually. At least in Germany. The second stage reduces the helmoltzeffect/buffering above 70 KmH (kmh not miles.) The first between 0-70kmH.
I’d cut my hair and not worry. Better still wear a hat. And always drive with the side windows up, the aerodynamics are designed to work with windows UP…..

Targa cabin buffeting is reduced dramatically by deploying the wind deflector built into the windscreen.
You would think Porsche would find some way to vent the air out the back so it’s not to have the buffeting.
@@mikerusznak They did design a way. The retractable wind deflector works perfect. No buffeting when deployed even at highway speeds.

I sold my boxster and brought a 992 targa. Sold it after 6 months and brought another boxster. The targa is far far too noisy with the roof down.
What difference did the windshield deflector have on the buffeting? @sxsw12

Hard choice but my heart says the targa and my bank account says mazda miata
Targa looks best, but... The targa jas no big tank, no pasm with minus 10mm and the wind noise is terrible... But i love mine
