@@9WERKSTV They all sound the same since the 991.2.....................with minor differences due to various filters and sound deadening. The ST is marketing over substance.
Great video, road test. I’ve been waiting for this comparison for 2 years. I’m an original R owner myself. I was offered an S/T if I trade back my R. I didn’t. The conclusions are what i would’ve predicted but
I've pretty much ignored every other S/T video from the more cliched, generic car reviewers over the past few months, knowing that this would be the only review worth watching Lee. It definitely did not disappoint, great video as always and thank you.
I could happily watch an even longer version of this video - this was fantastic to watch, thank you Lee. A quick question about the driving position for Right hand drive 911s - I'm aware that the air-cooled era 911s have pedals that are offset in relation to the 'H-point'- but is this still the case with these modern 911s too? Keep up the great work!
Great to watch your enthusiasm ! And of course every comment you make is music to our ears. If only all 911 lovers could wake up and find an ST in their garage 😅👏
Good comparison. The double-wishbone set-up at the front of the 992 S/T transforms the 911 into a modern day supercar. I've driven the 911R, and whilst it's a fun car to drive, it didn't feel very different to a 991.2 GT3 Touring. That said, the 911R looks so good in Lava Orange! Think the S/T looks a lot better in a darker colour.
Great video Lee - fascinating to see these back to back on our roads. Tough choice indeed! I’d go R purely based on it’s dimensions and greater engagement at “lower” speeds 👌
Lee, these vids are just plain fantastic. ❤ Thank you a lot for all the effort you put together in order to make these vids. As a long term overseas subscriber of Total911 and a proper 911 nutter. When the mag is now long gone, these vids just make my day.😊 Keep on pushing, well appreciated! Greetings from a 991RS owner from 🇫🇮👍, so 911R any day , all day! 😇👊
Brilliant video Lee. Really well filmed and edited. Your knowledge is incredible and superlatives and facts just roll off your tongue 😄 The R has always been my “lottery winning” car
Great comparo video! Count your blessings to have the opportunity. I was fortunate to own a 991.2 Touring from new and took some epic drives in it, which had a lot of the 911R DNA in it. Doubt I’ll ever get to even sit inside an S/T, though maybe I’ll be lucky enough to get a 992.2 GT3 Touring, which A.P. explained has the S/T suspension tuning and otherwise a lot of the S/T bits baked in. It’s funny/ironic that what seems to happen to us all is that we get nostalgic for the foibles of the cars we drove we when first became obsessed with these cars and then, despite progress and evolution, think the latest/greatest has somehow “lost” that “traditional feel”…. For you (and me, too, as we are about the same age), our first 911’s were 996’s, and our “peak” 911’s were 991’s. Yet of course our elder enthusiasts of course think the 997’s (or 993’s) were peak 911.
Thank you! Was very aware of the privilege during the test, and every day since! Great to read your sentiments on Porsche and how the journey has evolved for you, which chimes with my own story (save for the fact you’ve owned the nice cars, I’ve only driven them!). I wonder if, in 10 years, we’ll all be singing the praises of 992s. Let’s see.
Great review, Lee. If I had the funds, the R would be the only choice- the 991's lines are beautiful, the 992's are not anywhere near as resolved and to my eye, are a backwards step in the 911's evolution.
What a line up you have pulled off👏🏻and thank you for filming this comparison too, really informative. Considering that manufacturers have to follow the exponentially-ever-so-stringent safety regulations and fit more catalytic converters to pass emissions (e.g. the just-unveiled 992.2 GT3s), its incredible that Porsche have managed to keep the weight fairly similar between these two cars. One question about the gearing 15:21 - you mentioned that they share the same ratios. As the 911 S/T has shorter gearing than the 992.2 GT3 manuals, does that mean that the 991.2 GT3 manual cars also have longer gear ratios too? Many thanks in advance.
gear ratio is identical 911R and 991.2 Touring … S/T has shorter ratio and now so does 992.2 Touring … your descriptions feel dead on and highlight each special and unique qualities THANK YOU !!
The S/T must have shorter gearing than the R, how else can you explain the S/T being nearly 30 BHP more powerful but having nearly 20 mph off the top speed? Great video, the dream would be to have both!
Lovely video Lee (currently watching during the kids tennis lesson). Appreciate the effort/editing/time that goes into making these vids…… and i will take one of each btw! 🏎️💨💨

Totally agree with your feedback on the two of them, the 991 R retains the classic 911 front end feel while the ST comes across as a more serious car. I also prefer the 991 exterior and interior design, it will age better. I would pick the ST just because that 911 R didn’t have the 9000 RPM engine from the 991.2.
Having owned and driven both I concur with your views/conclusions and observations . The R has in it the DNA of the true essence of the 911 quirkiness. The bobbing nose, the five dials (4 analogue) the ability to keep you on your toes and a feeling the car wraps around you. The ST is simply incredible , peak 911 , the engine , the ride, the noise , the engagement, I did not want to like it but I loved it. But……it takes itself into the sort of car a non 911 person would own and love. The appeal is broader and probably there because of, legislation etc. a testament to Porsche. Progress is not always for all but as a piece of engineering it is exquisite. If I had to choose one, it would be the R but then I am a Porsche person.
Great video. Rare earth stuff. To be honest, I don't know what I would choose. I drive a 991.1 daily and I love the ergonomics and how the car feels. I'd probably pick the R
A truly great video of the greatest 911's ever made, but the 911 R has it for me. Just a better looking car and the true icon for the 911 fans. Porsche clearly listened to its owners. And delivered the ultimate 911.
No doubt the 911R is the better looking car with the S/T having the 992.1 face only a mother could love. I think for me not having driven either I'm wanting the S/T. Higher redline, more composed, no rear wheel steering so it's more pure in that way. I think for me I want the best that Porsche offers for this era which is going to be an S/T, not something in the middle. If I want something more 911, more raw, just give me a 997 GT3 RS. And the reality is that people who are in these kinds of cars don't often have to choose just one, so give me the best of the new, something supremely capable and yet still pure paired with something older with hydraulic steering, the more involving, more raw 997 RS.
Superb comparison of to absolute dream cars with amazing machinery but stratospheric price tags. For us mortals maybe 991T with some refinements or 997.2 S for that analogue feeling. Maybe an Idea for a another comparison?
Take them to some real roads, not beat up flat tiny roads and reassess. Spent 10 days in the Alps with my S/T last summer and can honestly say cars don’t get any better. It’s a car that gives you all the old old school feels but includes modern day touches that we all want. It’s a monster that comes alive when pushed, yet doesn’t beat you up. You can drive the S/T all day as a result because it’s calm and refined when needed, but an absolute beast when pushed. Perfection
Those were proper roads. If you need to take a car a 1,000 miles away to enjoy it, that's a problem. Personally, I want to enjoy a driver's car regularly, not a few times a year. So, bouncy B roads are where a car needs to perform.
@@flat6croc I have owned and put tons on miles on most Porsches. Those crummy roads should have only accentuated how much better the S/T vs the R. S/T handles road imperfections so well, much better than R. As such there is no way that anyone with any decent driving history could think otherwise. It then further distinguishes itself by coming alive on fine roads like those in Austrian Alps making it without a doubt the best driving road car Porsche has made. Unfortunately most people fall into the trap that a louder car must be better, so on that metric folks might conclude the R is better. But nothing is better to pile on miles than an S/T, it’s so good. Like I said, have had them all so don’t have anything to gain, just throwing my 2 cents in
@@Porsche311 Sounds like you have a bee in your bonnet about the ST. And calling those roads 'crummy' speaks volumes. They're the best kinds of roads for real-world driving fun. Alps roads are a different kind of enjoyment, but speeds and risks if caught etc are a different ballgame. Lumpy, tortuous B roads are the best. Flat surfaced, fast Alpine roads relatively dull by comparison. Scenery is great, driving more questionable. And as for falling into the trap of louder being better, the argument here was that the ST has more aural drama, not less, but that the R was still preferred. Anyway, personally find the R far more appealing. But they are both undoubtedly fantastic cars.
@@flat6croc I prefer the looks of R, the S/T isn’t a beautiful car. But since I can’t see either when driving and I don’t buy cars to collect, it’s the S/T as the better car. Not sure what bee bonnet means
Both great cars. Though i'd probably take the 911 S/T if I could find (and afford) one pre-owned as it's such a versatile car from road to track days, and a bit more forgiving.
You say the transmission feel was really great, so I'm wondering which vendor Porsche used to build it? Was it Aisin, ZF or Getrag who built it to Porsche design and specifications. I like both of these 911's, but I like the 997 generation the best. The change on the front suspension was a good move and should have been done as far back as the 996, but maybe the funds weren't around for the change then. I'd have a barn full of selection if the wherewithal existed, but I think we all might. Thanks again for a great comparison video.
ZF makes the PDK for Porsche. I was surprised when I learned that, because they're responsible for all those boring 8 speeds BMW and everyone are currently using. They're high quality transmissions, but still the fairly lifeless feel of a torque converter. Annoys me that BMW is using them on M cars now, they clearly could've had ZF design them a new 8 speed DCT, given the great quality of the PDKs. I'm a manual guy, so I was never shopping for ZF8 cars anyway, but BMW's fairly recently retired DCT was 2nd only to the PDK.
992.2 Touring - cheaper and larger production numbers (as long as they have improved the suspension tuning as they did with the S/T vs 992.1 Touring). R or S/T as investments only.

Ahahaha! Love that. Was certainly counting lots of blessings all day, and everyday since!
The 911r everyday and twice on Sunday.
Don't particularly like the S/T, the lack of RAS hurts it and the shorter gearing is unnecessary.
Got to say I really prefer the cleaner look of the R
With the ST, it's all gone a bit far. Fussy styling, wide body etc. The R is much more appealing from a pure driving perspective.
The S/T is about to dethrone the R🏎

I’m with you on the 911R, but that said when I add ‘what’s important to me' the list has to include affordability - GOAT for the masses
Based on that I found this comparison interesting

The r no question, more raw
Am getting maself a 2025 911 GT3 touring.thank you
My heart lean towards the 911R. The 992 platform is such a bulbous-looking car.
I think the R sounds better from outside.
We need to collectively stop using the term “goat“
Why?
Just from watching this vid i think the 911r would be my pick .Great production keep them coming
Thank you
The best spec C16 911R ?
I think so! Have always adored it, was a real privilege to drive it too.
just saw an S/T on a dealership floor. 'SOLD' obviously but wow. What watch is that?
Elliott Brown Bloxworth.
Drove a 992 911 T recently when my 997 was in for servicing. Felt as big as my Macan. Ridiculous really. I think the 911 peaked at 997.
