Luzerne & Susquehanna Railway in downtown Wilkes Barre

  • In the spring of 2018 I met up with a friend who was on the Tuesday L&S job for downtown Wilkes Barre. From there I followed him downtown and back, stopping many times to catch them.

    My wife never knew me when I was young and she is originally from LA, I am from the northeast and she couldn't believe the triple decker houses in the video and she had a vague idea of what kind of work I did back in the day but she actually put it together after this video. I was a insulation/weatherization specialist and walked those high roofs for years without safety equipment stepping off 40 and 60 foot ladders to put in vents and such, most people couldn't do it cause of the heights but I was paid handsomely for years. Never fell thank goodness. It was funny to see the expression on her face when she realized that I was stupid crazy when I was young. That was 20 years ago and I have long since retired from it and live in Arizona now. I miss the fall season but not much else. Thanks for the great video and the memories.

    Thanks for the railroad tour of Pittston and Wilkes Barre. My family is from Mountain Top, PA so I spent a lot of time in WB and the Pittston area several of those crossings looked familiar. Happy new year

    They haven't "upgraded" anything. Hard to believe but at one time this was Lehigh Valley's main line into Wilkes-Barre and interchange with DL&W, PRR and CNJ. This line continued from Wilkes-Barre and up the side of Penobscot Mountain to Mountain Top as LV's "passenger main" until 1965, when everything started going via the eastern side of the mountain to Pittston, where this line initially splits.

    The bridge over that creek at 1:43 looks like it has been around a long time and I bet it could tell some stories about wobbly trains and rushing snowmelt!
    Ditto all the comments about the engine. I love those switchers, little engines that *can*.

      Thanks! The line sees lite traffic and only on Tuesdays and Thursdays so it's not the highest upkept. In downtown WB they go on the ground every now and then. I myself haven't heard of any incidents near river road except for some dense drivers not yielding lol.

    The Baldwin engine with the Radiator covered with a tarp!!! Still has the bell mounted in front of the 1st exhaust stack. I think they are older than I and it means over 60+ years.

      Yes its not far from it. Nanticoke is about 15 minutes south of there.

      The rail line is currently ran by RJ Corman Railroad. The same locomotive in this video (still as you see it here) is still used on that line.

      Jaw Tooth welcome to NEPA. They never did work. Despite the fact they are on the Ex LV main line and Ex D&H main line the whole time. Also this is one of only 2 locos that they normally run. Both Ex B&M. The railroad is interesting and has things some class one railroads don’t.

      Matt's Mocs: I was thinking almost the same thing here. Except for the short length hand railings, the B&M's (former) tri-weekly "local," EMD SW1's, numbers 1229 &1231, would travel NE from Brattleboro, VT to Keene, NH along their "Ashuelot Branch" (to include a back up move via the Fort Hill Branch up to Dole Junction) to serve customers in Keene and, the Towns of Winchester, and Hinsdale, NH. They had an engine, number 1115, stationed in Keene and, employing a local crew to do the switching.
      In 1983 even the Green Mountain Railroad (now, the VRS) attempted to serve this branch, using their ALCO #305.
      The rails got pulled up in 1984 after the B&M opted to repair some of the washouts along the line so to bring in a string of gondolas so to remove the rails in the freight yard, etc.

    Do they cover the radiator because it's cold outside? I've seen that on diesel trucks and buses as well, only reason I can figure.

      Yes it’s to keep the operating temperature up. Pulling such a short train the engine is hardly working hard enough to stay hot

      Wind break for the locomotive internals.

      The tarps are put on the engines to help reduce the amount of cold air that's getting sucked across the radiators. These older emd engines have roots blower(s) that run colder than engines with a turbo. In the winter they run cold and tend to "soup up" meaning that oil blows by the oil rings and works its way into the exhaust manifold and out the stack. An older machinist that worked at enola with me once told me that the blower emd engines oil rings wouldn't seal right if the outside temperature was lower than 40 degrees.

    Not in all places but a lot, some people have to get out and just do it no pay. But make sure they are trained with weedwacker and chain saws. Send a few crews out no pay, but trained. The problem is everyone has too get paided, that Is bullshit, send some prison crews out.
