Armed with 650 horsepower and a 6.2L supercharged V-8, the 2020 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is the fastest and most powerful yet to bear the nameplate. However, its unprecedented performance and dynamics are no surprise given the depth of engineering that has gone into its making. Here is how Chevrolet engineers built the most potent Camaro ZL1 ever.
Aerodynamic efficiency
Coaxing 650 horsepower and 881Nm of torque out of a supercharged V-8 was just the beginning of the Camaro ZL1 performance story. To make the car as rapid as possible on the track and yet refined on the road, Chevrolet engineers made several aerodynamic enhancements to ensure this performance car forged a path of least resistance through the air.
Unique features such as the available carbon fiber rear wing, specific air deflectors and dive planes on the front fascia produce grip-generating downforce to help the car stick harder and drive faster in turns.
Furthermore, to ensure better cooling of the monstrous V-8, the Chevrolet bowtie on the front grille is hollow to aid airflow. Overall, the Camaro ZL1 has as many as 11 heat exchangers for optimal cooling of the powertrain on the track.
Cutting-edge suspension
The front-end ride height is adjustable, along with the camber geometry. The rear stabilizer bar also offers three-way adjustability. In fact, the 2020 Camaro ZL1 can achieve unprecedented 1.02g max cornering.
Additionally, the self-adjusting Magnetic Ride Control dampers can read the surface of the road up to 1,000 times per second, making automatic adjustments to the ride quality on the fly. This ensures that the Camaro ZL1 is comfortable on the road and while continuing to be poised on the race track.
Quick-shifting transmission
While the standard six-speed manual transmission with Active Rev Match feature offers engaging dynamics, the available 10-speed automatic transmission has been calibrated for lightning-quick shifts and optimized for speed. With unique Track Mode settings and 10 ratios, the 2020 Camaro ZL1 is always in the perfect gear, when rolling on or off the throttle. The paddle shifter behind the steering wheel, meanwhile, makes manual gear changes easier than ever.
True to its racing heritage, the Camaro ZL1 delivers incredible performance on-track, however, the extra ratios in the transmission mean that while cruising on the road, engine revs can be kept low to reduce fuel consumption. In essence, the 10-speed automatic delivers the best of both worlds - performance and fuel efficiency.
The heart of the beast
Sitting at the core of the Camaro ZL1’s performance lies the 6.2L supercharged V-8 engine developing 650 horsepower and a prodigious 881Nm of torque, enabling a benchmark run of 0-100Km/H in just over 3.5 seconds. The quarter-mile is dispatched in just 11.4 seconds, making it one of the fastest cars in its class.
Chevrolet engineers also paid extra attention to ensure that the Camaro ZL1’s immense power could be reined in as effectively when required. The Camaro ZL1 can go from 96-0 Km/H in just 35 meters (107 feet), ensuring both remarkable track time and safety, thanks to its Brembo performance brakes.
Additional ZL1 1LE features include:
Downforce-producing aero: Unique features include a carbon fiber rear wing, specific air deflectors and dive planes on the front fascia that produce grip-generating downforce to help the car stick harder and drive faster in turns.
Adjustable suspension:
Racing-derived, lightweight Multimatic DSSV® dampers front and rear offer exceptional wheel and vehicle control. The front-end ride height is adjustable, along with the camber geometry. The rear stabilizer bar also offers three-way adjustability.
Wheels and tires:
Specific lightweight forged aluminum wheels are an inch wider but an inch smaller in diameter, front and rear, than standard ZL1 wheels and are used with new summer-only Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar 3R tires1 that deliver max lateral grip of 1.10g.
Lighter weight:
The lighter wheels and dampers, along with thinner rear glass and a fixed-back rear seat, contribute to more than 50-pound lower curb weight than a standard ZL1 Coupe.
Supercharged performance and more:
The power behind the ZL1 1LE is the 650-horsepower, supercharged LT4 engine. Brembo brakes are included, along with dual-zone automatic climate control, Bose premium audio system, heated and ventilated front seats and heated steering wheel.
The ZL1 1LE Track Performance Package has an MSRP of $7,500 and the available 10-speed automatic transmission an MSRP of $1,595.

ZL1 has a wet sump oil system and no Active Fuel Management. The valve train is there but it’s deactivated. Owner of a 2018 ZL1.

This ZL1 is the only high horsepower supercharged muscle car available in a convertible too.
The 5th gen convertible ZL1 had the 13/14 GT500 convertible to cross shop. The 6th gen ZL1 vert doesn't have anything to go up against. Even the ZL-1 1L-E coupe out performs the GT500 track PKG/carbon PKG with high down force wing.
This standard ZL1, with it's magneride suspension and heated/cooled seats, is the one I'd have to choose because of how roads get destroyed here in winter time.

The ZL1 does not have a dry sump oil system, neither does it have Active Fuel Management Cylinder Deactivation. Source: I own one.
Does the automatic have cylinder deactivation? I know for sure the manual doesn't.

Correct - ZL1 with LT4 engine has a wet sump oiling. Corvette Z06 LT4 is dry sump.

Where is your source that the 10 speed automatic uses a clutch and not a torque converter? I've never heard that about the 10R80 before and it's used in almost a dozen different cars.
There is no clutch in the 10R80. This is incorrect Information.

I would really like to drive a zl1, my bolts on SS is fast but i would like more top end power! I feel like after 150 mph it stops pulling

Does it really have Active Fuel Management system? I was told, that feauture exists in a similar engine when used in a corvette but does not apply to zl1.
Abu Kx active fuel management cylinder shutoff is no good. It will cause the lifters to go out in time. It’s stupid of the GM to have AFM cylinder shutoff on their V8’s and the funny thing is that it’s just a marketing scheme. It don’t even help fuel mileage.
The active fuel management like Ryan said can be debatable. What he saying is probably right as much as I don’t want to believe it. I have a Z06 and it probably could do without four-cylinder shutting off and get the same gas mileage.

The ZL1 does not have a dry sump oil system as you claimed. It is still a wet sump. Also, you never mentioned that there is a 6-speed manual option available. Though the one you tested is the 10 Speed Auto.

Sorry for the late reply, I didn’t get a notification. I hear that too but I have it in my Corvette. I’ve had no problem in the last four years I’ve had it. I want to think that if you turn it off and don’t use it you will lose it and it will break. I have it on all the time in eco mode.

LAHOLM Observatörium that’s a good thing then. Cylinder shutoff will give problems. GM messed up by doing this. Plus it don’t even help fuel mileage. It’s known for causing the lifters to go out. $3,000 dollar repair if that happens. Maybe future GM V8’s won’t have cylinder shutoff

J Chavez I think the standard colors like red hot come with red belts. The tint coat colors like garnet red come with black belts. That’s how it was. Not sure about 2020

just ordered a ZL1 2020 and you can get red seat belts it a option
It has to do with the car's color. If the car is red, white, or black, it comes with red seatbelts. If it is blue, green, or grey, it comes with black.

Steve Anderson Good question. I love both but Z06 all the way! Although the ZL1 is 20k-30k less than a fully loaded Z06. Z06 are rare and can hang with the best sports cars today.

@@RANDsreviews I'm looking at both now. What's most important to me is witch one would be best for weekend street driving ( would not use on the track). My big problem also is 2015 through 2019 z06 's prices are 65k to 75k used. At that price they are pushing me to a new zl1 or ordering a new c8 corvette. A new C8 would be about 78k for what I would order so what they want for a used c7 z06 seems high. I've have driven the z06 but I guess I still need to drive the c8 and zl1 before making my decision.
Steve Anderson I did a full review on the C8 Corvette. Believe me you’ll be really happy with that car. I believe the Z51 package makes a big deal since it has so many options like magnetic ride control. The technology in the car is superior to my Z06 and the ZL1. Test drive all three cars. The new Corvette may be too low, the Z06 May have too much power, and the Camaro may be too bulky. Have fun and good luck!

I've lost sleep over this subject but in the end the Zl1 isn't worth the extra for most of us.
In fact, I would go on to say the Zl1 is track car with a warranty and not a daily driver.
The standard ZL1 is an exceptional daily driver, I think you may be talking about the ZL1 1LE.

The new vette even got trucked by this. Its nicer but this car was well made, and forged. C8 z06 will be better but not the base.
