    △About Off-Track Family:
    We are a family of 4 with 2 children. We are overlanding for years now on wild tracks in our Land Rover Defender 110.
    Our expedition vehicle is a Land Rover Defender camper conversion. Some people say it’s more like a bug out vehicle but for us it’s the perfect 4wd off-road tourer with best 4x4 camping set-up.
    We bought this 4wd rig brand-new in 2009 and the engine is the 2.4 tdci Puma version. We transformed it time after time in a real overland 4x4 touring camper and it’s now a perfect off-grid truck for wild camping, bivouac, or simply as an overlanding Defender.
    We love enjoying time in nature and exploring the world as a family.

    Hello: Thanks for the summary of your overheating issues.
    We had a similar issue on a 2008 Defender Puma, 2.4 litre. At the time is was already re-MAPPed. The root cause of the overheat was a tiny leak on the head gasket radiator. As you say, this is a big and expensive job. And finding the problem is not so straight forward. We had two pressure tests which both didn't show the leak. The viscous coupled fan was worn out and contributed to the overheat.
    But back to the overheating. With the re-mapping we also had a larger Intercooler installed (Allisport intercooler). This brings larger volumes of cooled air into the combustion chamber via the turbo. Cooler air = denser air = equals better performance at altitude and cooler combustion and cooler exhaust gasses...
    We also had an exhaust gas temperature gauge installed (EGT). This allows you to see temperature changes second by second, as the engine works harder.
    The EGR valve(Exhaust Gas Re-circulation ) blanked off... No return of hot gasses to the combustion chamber.
    I was not aware of the 82 degree thermostat - it may be standard on the Southern Hemisphere defenders. I will check the serial number.
    The viscous fan spacer is also a great idea - it places the fan forward into the fan cowling and improves air flow.
    Thanks for sharing

    Hi there, your video have helped me on a number of occasions and I really do appreciate it. I seem to have the exact same issue as yourself. I was driving down the motor yesterday and it happened again. I just restarted the car and it was fine to drive for another 30 minutes. I did just replace the coolant pump so I may also do the thermostat now aswell. I was wonder if you thought it mat be the VCV or the CHT sensor aswell ?

    • @offtrackfamily

      Thermostat was what helped in our case. Did you watch the latest video on that topic ? We removed the spacer because it was causing premature wear on the other part.

    My puma’s temperature gauge would suddenly shoot up and the engine would suddenly cut out. Eventually I had to take it into Land Rover for diagnosis. The answer was a faulty coolant temp sensor that screws into the engine block. It was reading 80 degrees from cold, so when hot reading wrong temperature and power train module going into protection mode and closing down. £330 for diagnosis and part replacement. (Part - £25).

    Hi Emiline.. My 2.2TDCi have been remapped.. Temperature creeps up quickly when engine is under heavy load. I have just changed to a 82 degrees C thermostat. This alone manages the coolant temp and hence the oil temp perfectly. At worse 85C coolant and 105deg at 115km/h. So far I dont need the fan extender nut nor the high perf radiator az yet.. For you guys out there.. you need to have the engine oil slightly above 100C so as to vaporize moisture..

    Great video as always. Have to smile though. On my 300tdi I had to remove the fan as it just would not get hot enough. My TD5 is usually perfect and my heater works well. Never had a ford transit engined defender as I like the look but too many horror stories about engine failure. That said I have just spent £2200 replacing my TD5 cylinder head with an AMC stronger one. Keep up the videos... they are amazing. Thanks.

    Bonjour. L' erreur fatale pour celui qui va jouer dans la boue est de ne pas directement nettoyer son radiateur avant que la boue ne sèche. Un lecteur de température via l'obd nous permet de lever le pied dès que la température ne monte trop. Le moteur de nos land est , me semble t'il, trop petit pour tirer de lourdes charges ou rouler vite avec en plus une galerie bien chargée. J'ai moi même été chercher mon rrc sur remorque et fait un voyage de 1200km sans souci mais j'estime que j'ai eu beaucoup de chance et je ne m'y risquerai plus, Je pense que les 3500kg que l'on peut tirer avec un 110 2,2 puma est une valeur optimiste ... Bonne continuation dans vos aventures

    • @offtrackfamily
      @offtrackfamily  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bonjour Philippe, merci pour votre message et le partage de votre expérience. Effectivement, il est important d'éviter de laisser de la boue séchée au niveau du radiateur et le lecteur OBD est un très bon moyen de vérification de température. Nos Defender sont solides, il faut simplement bien en prendre soin et connaître leurs limites :)

    Hi there, I am still looking for a solution off a failure on my Def 90 Puma 2.4 2007. On my dashboard I get the marks of a red battery, in combination off overheating gauge and a non-working tachometer, the result is that my Def thinks he is overheated (but that is not te case) and so I lose performance of my motor. I think of a failure bij electrical cables, how do you see that?

    • @offtrackfamily
      @offtrackfamily  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry but we never had this kind of issue. It looks more like an electrical issue. The only time that we had this red battery indicator on the dashbord was when our starter burned in Scottland on the road. You should have to ask it on facebook Land Rover groups or forums like defender2net. Let us know if you find the solution to your problem. It could help other people like you. Have a nice evening!

    Hi,
    I need your advice. My 2.2 puma tdci 2015 defender with 45,000 km doesn't go above 140km . It used to before but now it gets stuck at 140 km and then engine slowly heats up. I have pulled 155 to 160km on this before but now it's struggling. I do have remap ecu. But it never heated before. Please advice.

    • @oc9697
      @oc9697 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      *please note it overheated once on the highway and it stopped acceleration. White smoke came out and engine temp was red hot. The big fan stopped working, the engine dried up the external water tank. Long story short , I changed the egr, and the big fan and it was OK. But now symptoms are coming back as mentioned in my message above

    • @offtrackfamily
      @offtrackfamily  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! We don't know about the 2.2 puma tdci because we have a 2.4 tdci. I do know the engine is a bit different & you also have the particul filter, which isn't the case on a 2.4. Maybe it can also affect this overheating issue if the particle filter if clogged but not sure about that. In anyway, concerning the speed limited at 140km it's normal but if yours is remaped you can ask to the person who remaped it to unlock this speed limit. As explained in the video you have to check a few points. First, it's to know if your cooling system is efficient or not. If your intercooler or radiator is clogged with mud it can't work properly and you will have overheating. Same if your remap is too strong for your stock intercooler or radiator you probably have to install bigger one. If like us all those points were ok, we replaced the thermostat for the one we shared in the video and the problem was gone. Now we can use the full potential of this engine without any overheating in any conditions. (Please note that all this is based on our personal experience & that we professional mechanics.)

    Hi I'm Steve n I have defender 2.2 giving me hard time with over heating. . there is a water leak on the left side of my engine under the manufalt rite at back , at first I thought it was the rubber pipes and I replaced them . Still I haven't solved my problem and it is getting worse. I used to open the heater to bring down the temperature but now . It looks like I now don't have hot water making the heater hot . With my little experience it is a thermostart. Where is it in the engine and how do I replace it please 🙏
