Shanghai: The Most Developed City in China - A Driving Tour You Don’t Wanna Miss

  • Love Shanghai, love the city and love Lujiazui!
Lujiazui is Shanghai’s glitzy financial district, known for futuristic skyscrapers like the Shanghai Tower, with its lofty observation deck, and the needle-like Oriental Pearl TV Tower, home to the Shanghai Municipal History Museum.
The area is also noted for its luxe-hotel nightlife, with European fine dining, stylish bars and posh dance clubs offering panoramic views.
Lying on the east bank of Huangpu River and facing the Bund, Lujiazui Finance and Trade Zone occupies 28 square kilometers (10.8 square miles) and is studded with around 100 high-rise buildings.
Many are landmark buildings of Shanghai, making the area a great place to experience the modern flavor of this metropolis.
Often called the 'Wall Street of China', Lujiazui is the largest financial zone in mainland China, with more than 400 banks and financial institutions from both home and abroad, including HSBC, Citibank, and Standard Chartered Bank.
In addition, it is home to the headquarters of over 70 international giants and about 5,000 companies engaged in trade, investment, and intermediary services. The sum of transactions in the Shanghai stock market ranks it the 2nd in the world only behind the New York Stock Exchange.
Since the reform and opening-up policy carried out in 1978, Shanghai has enjoyed a great economic boom, and Lujiazui is gradually becoming more widely known. However, few know the origin of the name (Lu Jia Zui in Chinese), which literally means Lu family dwelling on a mouth-shaped alluvial beach.
In fact, the name is associated with Lu Shen, a noted scholar of Imperial Academy in the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644). After Lu retired, he lived on this land until his death. Today, you can still find Lu Shen's calligraphy in Shanghai Museum. His former residence and family cemetery are located in this area.
In Lujiazui, the charm of the city as an international metropolis is unfolded to the largest degree. One can admire the modern skyscrapers along Binjiang Avenue as well as various buildings of different architectural styles across the Huangpu River.
The four tallest landmarks of the city - the Oriental Pearl Tower, Jin Mao Tower, Shanghai World Financial Center, and Shanghai Tower are constructed next to each other. When night comes, all the buildings are decorated with shining colorful lights, presenting a gorgeous scene before your eyes. The Bund, facing this financial zone across the river, is the most wonderful place to enjoy the night view.
    ---------------------⭐⭐
    Oriental Pearl Tower
Oriental Pearl Tower, measuring 468 meters (1,536 feet) in height, has three viewing floors. An exhibition hall, demonstrating the history of the city, is at the base of the tower. The lower sphere has a viewing hall at a height of 90 meters (295 feet), providing a wonderful position to see the Bund and the graceful scenery along the Huangpu River. Visitors can also have a panoramic view of the whole city on the transparent observatory at 259 meters (850 feet) or the Capsule Sightseeing Floor at 351 meters (1,152 feet).
    ---------------------⭐⭐
    Jin Mao Tower
Jin Mao Tower, with a height of 420.5 meters (1,380 feet), is also a good place to view the city. The superfast elevator takes only 45 seconds to take visitors from the basement to the viewing hall on the 88th floor, providing visitors magnificent metropolitan cityscapes along Huangpu River, and views of the distinctive rosy dawn and sunset.
    ---------------------⭐⭐
    Shanghai World Financial Center
As the tallest flat-roof building in the world, it is 492 meters (1,614 feet) high with 101 stories. Sightseeing area occupies storeys from the 94th to the 100th floor. The viewing hall on the 100th floor is at a height of 474 meters (1,555 feet). The sightseeing bridge on the 97th floor seems to be constructed in the air. It would give you an illusion that you are wandering in the sky.
    ---------------------⭐⭐
    Shanghai Tower
At present, it is the tallest building in China, measuring 632 meters (2,073 feet) in height. The exterior of the building spirals upward to the top with one degree twist per storey to reduce the wind effect.

Great video! A few notes if anyone is curious:
    1. Green license card of a car suggests it is an EV or a hybrid.
    2. It is a weekend morning. So the traffic is not heavy. And only few people on the street. It is still cold in the early spring.
    3. You can see many guys drive fast on a scooter, either in blue or yellow. They are deliverymen. I guess it is busy hour for breakfast delivery in the video.
    4. It seems the video emphasizes business zones of Shanghai. But there are many other places more casual, comfortable or vibrant for daily lives. Also, there are many traditional buildings in Shanghai, not only high skyscrapers.
    5. Not like in the video, I don’t think Shanghai is that car- centric( especially when you compare to many cities in US). You can enjoy the city by walking or a bicycle.

Indian here. I can't help myself but wonder what decades of vision, planning and cooperation can lift a nation which was destroyed by the British and the Japanese into the envy of the world. Thanks to the 50s, 60s and 70s born Chinese people. You guys have sacrificed your ENTIRE life building this beautiful country up from dirt poverty. I don't have words to express my feelings. It's really sad to see the neo-colonialists backed by the US and G7 is hell bent on stopping the growth of this nation. Keep up with the vision. You guys are already past that stage where big bullys can hurt you. Now you don't hae to worryabout anything. Also I reall hope both India and China solve all our border issues and start cooperating in all the areas of trade and developement.

Our politicians only want to win elections, They have no concern for the morden level of development in our mother country. We people of India really want our leaders to take lessons from the leaders of China. Because we are fed up with the poverty in our country. Hence, New York has much older housing stock, high-rises, subway, and general infrastructure. In addition, New York does not have a friendly state or federal gov’t to provide it with the necessary funds to keep the city in good shape. This means New York is largely left to fund on its own and it explains why the city seems neglected compared to other major global cities. Shanghai does not have any of these problems.

I've never once been to China nor do I know a whole lot about China as a whole. But as an American, I'm extremely jealous of how nice their infrastructure and roads seem to be. Very clean, well-kept, orderly, calm, and things of that nature. As I said, I know absolutely nothing and I'm commenting based purely off of the infrastructure and roads. China and Japan seem to have these two aspects absolutely on point. I wish America could be this clean, orderly, well structured, VERY nice flawless looking roads with minimal issues. You cant drive anywhere here without there being 50 million potholes, dips, bumps, and many other issues. It's very unpleasant. It looks like a very utopian place for better or worse.

    • @ThatsNotVeryFunnyLol
      @ThatsNotVeryFunnyLol 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

Btw, I 100% understand that this is just a small part of China (the infrastructure) and I'm sure the citizens have massive trade offs that they would much rather have compared to extremely nice and clean roads and such. I'm sure the government may be extremely controlling and whatnot, which leads to this utopian like culture. However, it's still interesting how every country that operates like this (China, Russia, North Korea, etc.) have very nice appearances. Is it worth the trade offs? I highly doubt it. But I wish there could be a healthier balance.

From the point of view of an observer who comes from the "Western Hemisphere" where China is presented as a country where the citizens are denied everything that seems worth living in, one can only look in amazement at how happy, free and apparently quite worth living the life of the Chinese is, at least in the metropolises appears!
All I can say, Chinese, is that you can be proud of your country and of your leadership, even if there are certainly points of criticism and improvements. In countries that like to criticize your government like a high school teacher, they probably only do so out of stupid ignorance of how far you have come in the meantime. Your mix of bread and butter and stick seems to work much better for the majority of the population than in countries that have taken up the cause of maximum freedom for every citizen and are becoming entangled in increasingly inefficient processes. You Chinese walk on the better path.

    2 things I noticed
    1) Half the cars were electric
    2) Not much traffic maybe because of properly built city plan, in Delhi no matter what time it is there is always traffic everywhere and only 1-2 main road to travel huge distances so those roads have very high traffic, thats all because of bad city design.

    • @IronKurone

How do you know they are electric cars?

    • @sleepyjoe4529
      @sleepyjoe4529 ปีที่แล้ว +33

I lived there for 5 years, left in 2019 due to COVID:
      1) Most cars bought after 2016 are EVs because license plates in Shanghai are very expensive (almost as expensive as the car itself) and you can't even get it most of the time without winning a lottery for it. But if you buy EVs, the government allows you to have a free or cheaper license plate registration.
      2. Shanghai is divided into two portions by the river: Pudong and Puxi. The footage you're seeing is mostly Pudong (the first hour anyways). I lived right where that big red traditional looking building is (built for world expo about 10 years ago). Pudong is brand new (was mostly villages and farm lands 20-30 years ago) so the layout is very good with proper planning and wide roads with bike lanes. Most of the denser traffic is on the Puxi side of Shanghai.

In addition, if a car fails to yield to pedestrians at an uncontrolled crosswalk without traffic signals, the driver will receive a penalty of 3 demerit points and a fine of 100 yuan. Actually, Shanghai is not the most developed city in China. That title goes to Shenzhen with a higher development index. Hangzhou might also be close. Both cities has more modern infrastructure than Shanghai with the exception of port infrastructure which is the best in the world.
