    On those old 2 1/2 tons they have a multi fuel engine, we used to mix 1/2 and 1/2 Mogas and Diesel they would have a nice blue flame out the stack.

      Before they hit the Auction Block the multi-fuel element had been removed.
      They run on Strictly diesel. I've got over a million miles in the Duce.5. & the M-51 5 ton dump trucks. The turbos's & gas / diesel mix did blow a great blue flame out the stack....Bad part of those old trucks, they were top-heavy and dangerous. On bad road at any speed.

      @@rogermarshall8991 what makes them multi fuel is the engine design. The fuel density compensator only responds to fuel viscosity and adjusts the fuel rate depending on the fuel type. 2 of mine are running on used motor oil, used transmission fluid, gasoline, old mineral spirits and whatever else will burn. That being said never mix used motor oil and used cooking oil. It turns to the same type of rubbery stuff that opened enamel paint turns into. Not good in the fuel system.

    • @Slim_Slid
      @Slim_Slid 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's quite a difference in power between the two that's one of the reasons why.
      The FMTV's with the Caterpillar 3126/C7 all have 290 HP/860 TQ while the M900/M939 series that had the Cummins NHC-250 were 250 HP/658 TQ and the later A2's with the 6CT was 240 HP/592 TQ.

    • @Slim_Slid
      @Slim_Slid 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@flight2k5 I already know about that,that's why I had written "one of the reasons why" when I was comparing.
      The M1083-M1089 MTV can weigh as much as a M113A3 in some cases.The MTV is what replaced the entirety of the five ton trucks as a series,while the LMTV was made with just one less axle and be classified as a two and a half ton truck.The HIMARS is the same frame and chassis as a FMTV but used as a missile and weapons system launcher.
      I've been able to work on a few FMTV's (Not in the military) that are privately owned by members I know.One of the things I notice is that they seem to always end up in the shop after some time because of head gasket failure.

  • @chriscoe3045

    Remember these trucks are detuned so that the engine doesn't make enough horsepower to break the drive line. Hence the military toughness.

    • @WWPTV
      @WWPTV  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Sleds are 32,000 pounds empty. Count the weight blocks and multiply that by 2,000. Then add to the dry weight and that is how much they pull. Some of these videos you can't make out what is in the weight box.

    Not rolling much coal. Must be running straight diesel fuel. I have a mix of diesel fuel, mineral spirits, used motor oil, transmission fluid, gasoline, and whatever else I can get that will burn. Mostly from cars that I have junked.

    • @1320fastback
      @1320fastback 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Multi Fuel trucks make the most horse power on straight diesel. Doesn't make sense to run mult fuel in a power competition.

    • @KDuboutdoors19
      @KDuboutdoors19 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@1320fastback my 76 seems to make the same amount of power with any fuel. I do know that the fuel rate is different than every other deuce I've seen. 77MM3/stroke vs 74MM3/stroke fuel rate for my other 2. The 76 can pull a hill better with 5 ton of gravel in the bed than one of the other ones empty. Its just an animal.

    • @Slim_Slid
      @Slim_Slid 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The multi-fuel was actually a weak engine with some flaws and lasted short on mileage.
      The LDT-465 was 135 HP/330 TQ while the LDS-465 was 175 HP/447 TQ.
      The multi-fuel was still a compression engine with a fuel compensator and different injection.Using gasoline obviously was last resort.If gasoline is applied,it has to be mixed with motor oil or diesel,on top of having more than what gasoline was included.

    • @ffjsb
      @ffjsb 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Slim_Slid For the size, it was a pretty powerful engine. All the other engines are bigger. Multi-fuels were made for a reason, to be able to use whatever fuel was available in a wartime situation. They didn't need to be speed demons.

    • @WWPTV
      @WWPTV  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Pulls go like this. You arrive at a fair, then you hear the pull order. All that is a list of the different classes. Classes are broken down by weight, horsepower range, big tires, small tires, and by trucks and tractors. There are times where truck pull against tractors but this is rare. So with a given class you might have 5 to 10 and sometimes 15-20 competitors competing for the tops spot $300-400 dollars. It might not seem like a lot, but that is what it pays because they pay the top 8 or so vehicles in a class so everybody gets something. The first hook is the test hook. The sled operator will set the weight in the sled and how fast he wants the weight box to top out on the sled before the first puller runs. After the first puller pulls and if the distance is good or in the range they want, the the class is set. The first puller also has the option to drop their first hook and we try to tell you that on the videos. Sometimes the will watch one more to make sure it is set perfectly in the case of breakage or a lower horsepower competitor gets the first hook. Once the sled it set for the class, then the remaining vehicles will drag the sled as far as they possibly can. The test hook if they dropped it will come back sixth or last depending on if they have problems. The one who pulls the sled the farthest is the winner. So any given night you will see 4, 5, even 10 different winners. The better the momentum you start with, the further your run will be.
