    I hadn't realized post-production helical cutter heads were a thing. I might have to look into upgrading my planer. Now that one was a deal - due to a bar code error and an inattentive/unknowledgeable worker at Menards, I got it brand new for $10.

    • @the_undead
      @the_undead 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Or the worker new full well what was going on but just couldn't care less or even better could just go with the "oh I just scanned the part it said it was $10 so I got the $10 from the customer and sent them on their way I have no idea what a helical cutter head is". Which seems far more likely to me and what's Menards going to do about it I can't expect their employees to know what things are and how much it should approximately cost

  • @wcvp
    @wcvp 3 ปีที่แล้ว +231

    One thing to keep in mind, just because they come out of the same factory doesn't mean they're the same. Motors, bearings, blades, etc. can be easily changed for different production runs, other parts can be binned so the nicest ones go into the most expensive and the worst (but still usable) ones go into the cheapest, and how much effort is put into quality control can change. Are they actually actually going through the effort of doing all that? Who knows... I'd still buy the cheapest one though lol

    • @AiOinc1
      @AiOinc1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Many foreign factories don't bother stocking more than one set of parts.
      Even if it is the cheapest thing and somehow does manage to be built worse than the thing right next to it on the production line, his $400 savings will cover any shot bearings plenty of times over - Or just once if he does the right thing of getting nice quality ones immediately and still ends up with an amazing deal.

      @@tarstarkusz He didn't buy some cheap brandless knockoff that'll break in a month, he bought a fine product. That's exactly where the best value for money is. If you just go for the expensive brands you end up paying a lot just for brand recognition.
      Take cars for example. Buy the cheapest car you can find and you'll be paying through the nose for repairs, but that doesn't mean you should go and buy a Tesla or something if you want the best value for your money.

    • @tarstarkusz
      @tarstarkusz 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@Huntracony I completely disagree. Commercial equipment is on a whole different level than consumer equipment. I kind of agree that if you are in the consumer market with only occasional light use, something like what he has might be OK and possibly even the best bang for buck. Paying for a brand with machinery is not like with clothes. You are paying for the reputation and the after sales service, parts availability You are not paying for a label, you are paying for what that label represents.
      The real weak point of most consumer equipment is duty cycle. This thing probably has a 5-10% duty cycle.

      It's called a jointer, because it's main purpose is ensuring the mating surfaces of two boards glued edge to edge (flat), to make a larger board, have no gaps. Thus they are jointed. Plus, jointer is short for jointer planer.

    To anyone watching this in 2023 this compromise and extra hassle no longer makes any sense. The prices have changed dramatically at Home Depot and the cutter heads - which YOU will not be getting for free. The cheap Rigid jointer now clock in at $800 plus an additional $300 for the Shelix version of the spiral cutterhead. The Lux version is another $100 over that. The cutter head price is assuming that you buy no extra replacement knives upfront, always a stupid decision in my opinion, and also assumes that you do not purchase either of the torque wrenches that you need to properly and safely secure the carbide cutters with. You can just use a regular wrench or screwdriver but then you're playing the guessing game of did I tighten down enough or did I tighten it down so hard that I cracked the carbide insert or stripped the hole out.
    The Grizzly G0452Z comes with a helical cutterhead, a built in mobile base and is now about $1400.00 including the freight shipping. The bare minimum for the Rigid, conversion cutterhead and mobile base (usually $89 - $100) is going to be about $1200.00 before tax and shipping. Realistically you're now going to be very, very close to, if not over, the price of the Grizzly plus freight.
    I just bought the Grizzly and couldn't be happier.

    There is one argument to be made for the straight knived cutters (I still recommend helical): They have a uniform surface finish. You get some mild but noticeable scalloping with helical cutter heads, but that can be sanded away if it matters (outer surfaces) or ignored if it doesn't (glue lines, inner surfaces). All in all, I'm extremely happy with the cutter I put in my dad's 40 year old powermatic.

    This video was fun to watch but it's clearly an advertisement. Fine. But.....
    I have this same Rigid jointer and I've never had the slightest problem with hardwood chips clogging my dust collection system. Even the softer hardwoods like poplar and mahogany are no problem at all. He digs a handful of pine out of the impeller. Yes pine can be a problem. So if I'm jointing pine I simply slip off the dust port and the chips fall nicely to the floor with absolutely no clogging in the body of the jointer. And they don't scatter at all so cleanup is a breeze. I have a Shop Fox 2hp dust collector and about 30' of 4" hose (not pipe) between it and the jointer. Lot's of times I've neglected to turn on the collector and ran boards through it. When I did turn it on the clump flowed through the hose, the impeller and into the bag nicely. The chip thing would be no justification for me.
    I've run several thousand board feet of hardwoods across my Rigid 6" which I got over 10 years ago and I'VE NEVER NEEDED TO CHANGE OR SHARPEN THE BLADES!!! I've made hundreds of 5 piece cabinet doors and every single rail and stile was flattened on my trusty Rigid. The HSS blades on the Rigid DON'T SUCK IN ANY WAY. I just finished gluing together 6 fairly large charcuterie boards all flattened on my 10 year old HSS cutters. I've run every domestic hardwood over it and a few exotics. Hard maple, walnut, white and red oak. More European beech than anything else which is a fairly hard species.
    The blades have some nicks obviously but they slight ridges they create come out with the routine finish sanding.
    When the time comes I'll make the one time $40 purchase of the magnetic blade alignment jig and a set of blades is only $20. A Byrd is even cheaper than the Lux at $309 which really isn't bad at all but I simply can't justify it.

    those bases are nicer if you make with a piece of scrap 3/4 plywood, i only say this because building them this way rather than with the metal erector set stuff gives a shelf when done. i have this jointer and personally like to a bunch of paint cans under it and find the added weight helps make the machine a bit more sturdy when using it.. thanks for the upload your content rocks

    So, I got away really cheap by getting a like new 6 inch Craftsman jointer in immaculate condition, for only $75 bucks? The guy j bought it from even put a cool caster upgrade kit on it..

    I bought a cheap Porter-Cable benchtop jointer, and I have chips flying out the top no matter what I do. I'm hoping I can upgrade the cutter head. It's very disconcerting to have wood chips bouncing off your face as you joint a board...

    although I think you have a very solid theory, something is off. I will say this carefully in case I messed up. I went to what I think is the site you mentioned and every tool I looked at could be found elsewhere for sometimes hundreds less. what gives? I do see that you mention two different places, so is that where I screwed up. I am not a TH-cam D*&khead I appreciate your time, but if you think about it it is time wasted if nothing is gained. I hope it is a simple mistake . thanks again and keep giving your usually spot on content. that's why I subscribed in first place

    Sad that there is ONLY ONE orientation for the carbide tips. I would have expected a carbide tip, such as what is used on a lathe, with at least 2 tips available from each carbide blade.
    Or did I miss something?

    Just remember that not all spiral cutter heads are helical cutter heads. That’s why you often see now the use of the term “helical style” cutter head.
    It’s very misleading since many “helical style” cutter heads have only 1/3 the number of carbide cutters that a true helical cutter head has and they are often only 2 sided HSS cutters and not 4 sided carbide cutters.
    It’s buyer beware and many companies that sell the “helical style” heads count on people not knowing the difference.

    Shop Fox is owned by the same Company as Grizzly but not necessarily built in the same place at all. The Shop Fox are built in their Taiwanese factory that has better QC and more features and most of the Green Grizzly Tools are Chinese. Still pretty good QC for that location but not in the same league at all.

    Does it need a specific paint for restoration? Mine is brown >_

    Not a criticism of the video but you should know how much those inserts cost, they can be well over 100 for a pack of ten and that head takes 40. So you will get long life out of them and they are superior for sure, but that replacement bill is going to come with some sticker shock. Also some do not know that if they are just dull you can re-sharpen carbide, or at least find someone that can for you.

    400$ 😮
    That's the lowest I've seen anywhere!
    But, none of the top brands offer ANY jointer/planer in India, so my only option is still a hand-held planer mounted upside down. That's only 4", but more than enough for plywood and thin stuff.
    Come to think of it, if I can jerry-rig 2 of those 4" blades side by side on a custom rotor, that'd be one hell of a cheap 8" jointer 😂😂

    Not true on the cast iron bits being the same. There are quality standards set by the companies based on price. That comes to the tolerances of the milling of the dovetail ways to the amount of time the castings are aged to allow for stress relief. In the old days, the best companies would let the castings rest for years until being milled and put into production. I just feel you're doing a disservice to people who don't know better by making unfounded claims like that.

    Do you find the jointer 'tippy' on the mobile base? I have the same machine and it's so skinny and top-heavy that it's a bit scary to roll around. Every time a wheel hits a crack or bump on the floor, it wants to tip over sideways. I need to build a wider base and bolt the machine down to it.

  • @sebastiannielsen

    Whats the practical difference between a planer and jointer? Seems the "only" difference is that on the planer the cutter head is above the plank and on the jointer it is below the plank, but on the jointer you could plane a big closet or other big wood project so it becomes smooth.
    Thus you don't need a planer, you only need a jointer, right, because the jointer can do all the jobs a planer can do, and a little bit more?
    Only thing I can see, is that the planer is much safer to use than a jointer as the cutter head is "hidden" inside it.
