I have an update to this repair, hopefully this comment will stay at the top. I used your video last night to confirm that it was my pump, but it can be repaired (yours could have too). You know that metal piece that's on the shaft making the noise? In the video, you stated that you didn't know what that piece was...well, it's the bearing race/shim. I learned that last night. That shim will rub up against the metal housing, causing the squealing noise. So, take the 4 1/4" screws off the bottom of the housing...Once you do that, you will see a Torx (star looking screw head bit) screw dead center of the top of the housing. Take that screw out and keep it. Then, with a Phillips head screwdriver, put the metal pulley off the ground and support it on either side so that it can come down when you strike the top. Now that you have the pulley off the ground, but supported on either side of it (I used a vise, but you could put a 2x4 on either side of the pulley, that will raise it enough), take a Phillips screwdriver and put it, point down, in the threads of where the Torx came out. Give it one good strike, and the whole bearing assembly will pop out of the bottom. BUT NOTE where everything goes as it comes apart. There is a plastic washer in there that has a rubber O-Ring...note which direction the O-Ring faces...For example, is the O-Ring facing up, or down on the shaft (I can't remember now). Now, that piece you said you didn't know what it was, just take the bearing out, and push that back down into the metal assembly, and then simply press the bearing back in (it's a tight fit). That piece simply holds the bearing tightly into the assembly, and can simply work it's way up to the bottom of the assembly due to vibrations and start the squeaking. Now, put everything back together in reverse order, and viola, you just saved yourself $30 bucks! That metal piece is still good, and so is the bearing, so it's just a matter of the shim working its way up over time. If you catch this problem soon enough, nothing is damaged beyond repair. If the bearing shim/race was destroyed because you let it run too long while squeaking, then cut a soda can into strips, and keep adding layers around the bearing until it is a GOOD tight pressure fit, or until it will no longer wobble in the assembly. I reassembled mine (again, after your excellent video), and it is as quiet as the day she came off the line...and I expect her to stay that way another 5 years! I hope this helps a lot of people save $$$. It is stupid that they make you think you have to buy a complete assembly because of their faulty shims working lose over time. BEAT their system and fix the one you have!

Mark Price how do you take the plastic casing apart to get to the pully screw.
      Thank you

Thank you for the heads up on the option to repair instead of replacing the entire part. My water pump looked the same as the one in the video, with the bearing race sticking out. I took it apart, cleaned it and fixed a kink in the race and put it back together. Runs and sounds good. Hopefully it will last for another two years. Thanks again!

I have watched a dozen or more of these videos. This is the best one of them all. As soon as I pulled off the pump I could see that corrugated metal poking out. One thing I would tell people to watch out for is when you pull the hose's off. Some of the videos suggest using a towel. I did and still took a bath. Thank You for posting this really helped me out.

The noise is being caused by the corrugated sheet metal ring you can see on the under side of the pump. It has moved up out of the pump pulley hub until it touches the bottom plate. Careful work with a screwdriver as you rotate the pump can push it back into place. Do it a little at a time over several revolutions of the pump shaft till you get it back to nearly flush with the top of the pulley. Prying against the pump plate may move the pump shaft downward, so when you finish, push the pump shaft upward to return it to its original, free-turning position. This repair will last for several years, but the ring will work its way out of the hub again, so you can do it again, but the price is right: zero.

Lyle Stephens Thanks for the explanation. But fortunately, I fixed it. It's since been replaced with a new high efficiency unit.

Any advice on how to pop off the top of the plastic casing/housing? I have the same style as pictured in the video at 3:30 and the fit is very snug. I didn't have any luck with it tonight.

@@cturboaddict Thanks for your reply. I watched both videos (inspection linked in description) and this fix video, but I can't find anything showing how to remove the top of the white housing. I know it has been a while since you fixed yours, but just curious if you recall how you cracked the housing open? Thanks again!
