As a kid I never knew who Charles Grodin was and LOVED every time he was on the show. I love that someone can keep in character like this and make it hilarious every time.
@@utubeDaveutube seen both, midnight run was one of my favourites...I find he didn't get as much work as he should have because I found his deadpan sarcasm hilarious.
I love the early shows. I’d stay up later just to watch. It was like an irreverent alternative to Carson, definitely fashioned for the younger college crowd. So clever and hip. Great comedy, interesting guests and outstanding music. It had such a cool New York vibe to it. By the time Dave got to CBS, I’m afraid his show was almost unwatchable! Totally different.
Only catching upon Grodin now at 40+ years old. The guy has incredible timing. A joy to watch, and hilarious to boot. Where are all the good comedians (Paul Foot excluded)?
He started it on Carson's Tonight Show which is why they had the opening about being "friendly." He did this banter with Carson for many years before going on Letterman. He was mild on this first show compared to Carson. His act was so popular on Carson that they booked him during sweep (rating taking) weeks. He is obviously wicked smart as a successful writer, director, and actor.
There was some Don Rickle’s DNA in Charles Groden, don’t you think? Don’t know if they ever appeared together, but the interchange would have been a blast on the TV Talk Show guest couch!
When late night was about entertaining people. Good times. And now, they wonder what Making America Great Again is all about. Someone makes late night great again.
Brother Theodore probably broke character more often than Charles Grodin ever did. ... His running conflict jokes with Letterman were as good as Jimmy Kimmel's Matt Damon routine. ... always hilarious!
You know there was a time in my life.when I had a since of humar.he reminds of a much better time in my life.I do believe when I was inocent . Way back when..... you know . Yes or no?....
I will mark EVERYTHING else off my calendar the day Don releases a Charles Grodin collection
@Don Giller hint hint.
@@LeeKav Sadly, I suspect it's coming really soon now.
What lovely man. So much of my childhood and as an adult. Love from Africa mr Grodin. Gods blessing.

He was brilliant! Watch him in movies too (with Robert DeNiro and Warren Beatty (Heaven can wait)

💚 I didn't know this funny guy. I've just watched him on Johnny Carson, they were really good together!
Watch Midnight Run with him and DeNiro. Hilarious.

Waiting for you to turn 80 for you to notice they were there all along as well.
When Mr. Grodin was the guest on any late night show you knew you were in for a very interesting evening of television.
RIP Charles Grodin April 21, 1935-May 18, 2021
That cold open was hilarious! and I love the band playing "Cool Jerk" going into commercial at the end
You're my hero, Don!
Too good, RIP
I just heard of his passing a couple weeks ago.
RIP to a legend
I love Grodin's cool humor. Fearless.
How did he ever come up with this as an act. Godin is hilarious.

Charles Grodin is the King of Life and Love.
Zen! The late, great Charles.

Don appeared as a guest on Charles’ own Talk Show: th-cam.com/video/fEIIsYal890/w-d-xo.html
Pretty funny that Grodin lambasts Dave for all the dog pictures when he's largely known for the Beethoven movies.
😊
Largely known for Midnight Run. I also really liked him in Seems Like Old Times, for those of you who have not seen it.
Remember those would be over a decade later 😂
So ironic...Grodin's pet peeves from the future star of Beethoven....
One of the best Letterman guests ever!
Bill Murray, Martin Short, Steve Martin, Teri Garr, Jack Hanna, and ANYONE else besides this oaf.

ever laugh so hard but you can't make noise and your shoulders start to hurt
I loved his style of comedy. Most people don't get it, they think he's being mean.

It's not about trump.the egotistical, Narrsassistic mad man that he is
You,ve got the goods.
Grodin in total control.
One of the very early shows.

Wow. This is a really early letterman show.
This was really funny.
Rip
Mr. Grodin died today. :(
Looks like an aging Patrick Bateman in the first shot
My birth date! I was 14 that year...
Grodin was hilarious, and I think he just got better with age. He really grew into the "grumpy old curmudgeon" role! lol
He saved Beethoven.
A thin David Letterman!
He is much funnnier on Lettermen than he was on Carson. Johnny didn't seem to know how to deal with him.
RIP
Finally I have a name for that dog I've been fixating on: Stan!
I like how the set looks like Archie Bunker's house.
Grodin foretelling the Beethoven movies.
So funny.
Charles looking especially like Ted Bundy here.
Ted had a better personality.
Sweetheart, there's something I have to tell you...
Who is the make-up woman at the beginning? I've seen her in many clips.
Candy Carell.

Beethoven's dad
Letterman grew up play Zod, didn’t he?
Was that the real Jimmy Serrano 🤣
he had a different sense of humor didn't he?
I think Phil Hartman got his style from him.
What happen to the United States ?!
