Was a bit surprised to see the M102 in this video. We had several of them in the family back in the day and never had any problems with them. But Grandad always made sure everyone followed the maintenance schedules and treated the cars the way they like to be treated. That probably helped a lot. There are still a lot of cars with M102 engines left where I live. Almost half of the W123 cars sold here had gas engines.
Hi Pierre, would be great if you made a video on the 6.9 one day, the great things about it, and also what may go wrong and how easy / difficult the repairs are. Thanks
I will add the W201 190E 2.3 16 Valve engines. These things are just more fragile than they should have been. Lovely cars to drive and much sought after but my 1986 US-version had two engine failures between 1997 and 2004. Timing chain tensioner failure for one that trashed the engine and improper maintenance in the rebuild. Crankshaft has no keyway and must be tightened on a bench to 240 ft/pounds. Great video Pierre.
Australia here; I told my old school Mercedes mechanic to put a double row timing chain in my '83 SEC with 305,000 km on the clock. I know the terrible damage that can happen when these fail in my job as a diesel mechanic. He looked at it and said they had been replaced with double row. Good. I also keep an '84 SE 380, 195,000 km for spare parts.
Do the M110 caveats apply to the 185 hp Euro spec engines as well, or just the catalyzed low-compression US ones? I'm assuming just the US ones, since the Euro ones didn't have all the emissions stuff.
A simple blow by test at the breather hose at valve cover top would show a worn engine block , rings . Used to do that on every used diesels for sale .
My 1982 SEC 380 has been updated with the dual roller chain and sprockets. It’s running very well. It will cruise at 80-85 mph on the interstate all day. This car was a bucket list car after I was T boned in my 1988 SEL 560. Check out my video if you want to see what happens when a modern car t-bones a SEL.
If I may be so bold, he doesn’t work on/recommend w210 due to the excessive over complicated electronics/computer controls. They are however good cars when well maintained, I personally drive one. The m112/m113 has a reputation for reliability. These cars are still pretty common out in the world. It’s the last gasp of old-world Mercedes engineering, but definitely not an easily repairable mechanical vehicle like what came before. I enjoy my w210.
a 1996 w210 300d is very simple compared to 1998/1999 4 speed vacuum controlled transmission and less engine electronics. In 1997 it switched to a 5 speed transmission but engine electronics still minimal. 1998 was a different beast with a turbo - 1999 also
My W116 has an M110.922. It's a '79. Has 291,000 kms on the engine. Solex carb. I remember you mentioned in another video that's what you would own and love the noisey drive train. So i went out and bought one. Now i hear it's doomed.. Great! Some say they've seen M110 do over 800 000 kms... lets see what happens. Thanks for the insightful video
Rust - in the wheel arches, the boot, floor under the back seat, doors, engine bay, hood, etc. Everything else is fixable. I've had the M102 in a W201 which is the same in the W123 230E. It was just a 2.0 litre not the 2.3. They will require a new head gasket at some stage.
Yes, I daily dorve the W201- so much fun. Exactly what they're made for. However, not really suited for rainy weather as they have boot and door leak issues like other mercedes of that era.
Can you please re-upload, or re-shoot this video without the mess for the first four minutes. I really wanted to hear this one but theres something majoly wrong with the editing...

Audio fixed! Excellent information
I only hear music up to point of 4:05. After that i hear Pierre. Editing mistake? 👀

Nice information on the earlier 300D engines. Don't know that information on the rods.
Doing all this without a single note in front of you! Brilliant. Thanks again from us out here muddling along.
Was really looking forward to hearing his thoughts on motors.

One of your best videos!
BEST VIDEO FOR ME, GREAT MUSIC TASTE

Do you represent the whole Australia?

Blew head gasket 1985 300D. Was running strong. 238k..

How does the motor in the 560SEL rank? I'm looking at a 1989 560SEL.
Guess the audio folks had too much coffee this morning……
I enjoyed the music. 🙂 my 260 SE (6 cylinder line) had a new head gasket. should I be worried? It runs fairly smooth.
It's part of the CARisma of this channel
Doesn’t anyone actually check these videos before posting them?
That's why I say the editor of this channel is a race quota hire. Remember Pierre's video he deleted about "White people" he did a couple years back?
I am not having any issues with the viewing.
I’m sure a member of his TH-cam video QC staff was probably out sick that day
Gracias
Could you do a video about w210? Engine, electronics, transmission etc.... I am looking to buy one with around 200.000km on the clock.

I'd go for it. I have a m112 and 722.6 transmission, both passing 500k km
Morin Pierre, you only hear music in the first 4 minutes of your video. Great info thank you.
Pierre what about the m113? Would you consider that the last great Mercedes engine?
That engine sux

hey mate, I'm looking at buying a 116. anything I should look out for? just trying to get owners opinions, its either this or a w123 230e.

@@omzysgarage9323 Hey thanks for the reply mate, I'll keep that in mind to look for rust. Would you say the w201is good daily driver?
Yes, I daily dorve the W201- so much fun. Exactly what they're made for. However, not really suited for rainy weather as they have boot and door leak issues like other mercedes of that era.
@@omzysgarage9323 ok thanks mate, appreciate it. 👍👍
Attention to detail.
I was hoping close captioning might cover the gap, it just features the word: [Music]
Hi Pierre. This is the 2nd video with audio problems mate. Just wanted you to know. Cheers John 🍻
I started to watch this but then went to listen to my M110 instead.
The editor of your vids must have some illegally-downloaded editing software from 2006 that he brought with him from the southern hemisphere.
Smoking that peyote 😂 before uploading
Hey Bro! Repost.
M271 1.8L 4 cylinder timing chain stretch early 2000s engine
P we can’t hear you !!
Music only the dialogue didn’t come through
Seems like Pierre needs a new editor.
I thought M102 was solid?
Can you please re-upload, or re-shoot this video without the mess for the first four minutes. I really wanted to hear this one but theres something majoly wrong with the editing...
Can’t hear the dialogue!
Seems ok now /
Your video is just like Mercedes engines , failing and you forgot to mention the M103 which head gasket fails at 100k .😀😀
He already said that the M103 is very realible. The head gasket is the only item to look for.
Tbh my m104 engine is on 150k miles with a weep of oil.
If you thrash the car to high rpm you'll pay the cost.
Just replace coolant n fan clutch
Bad video no dialogue brother
157 lobes?
Just music!!!
