  • The kiln does its transformational magic on a holiday kiln opening. Normal face mugs become Grinch mugs glazed green. Reindeer on the wassailing cups really do fly as does my dog, all from the last video. The year's big story the Bundt becomes the poticnica for all Slovenians. Stop back next week for a look at the holiday shows and our search of the Belsnickel.

Really nice kiln load of work Jeff and love the small face jugs. Truth be told I liked them all. So nice to make Johnny the nut roll bowl and how could he NOT love it. Flying reindeer came out sweet, what a way to end 2023. 👍🦌

It's not over yet but your right, I'm looking back with satisfaction at what a year it has been. There is a new journal somewhere with all blank pages, I'm shaking in my boots.

@pottersjournal No doubt you'll be able to top it. 😀 The knee is better already. Now to get it into throwing shape.

If ever I was going to launch an Etsy site this would have been the video to do it with. I hope when or if the day comes, I can pull this magic off again. Happy Xmas.

Love your openings and never tired of seeing your amazing pieces and listening to their stories. I wish I lived close so I could buy one of the reindeer pieces - they feel ( visually ) so warm and welcoming. For me, the antlers behind the ears vs in front does not effect their charm - I like both but maybe behind a little more - I'll have to rewatch and pay attention. And those magic potion bottles with flying magic are adorable - who wouldn't need one to sprinkle the magic everywhere 😊

Thank you so much. I do try and have seen so many other kiln openings that just document a task. Even when not as obvious and fun as this I look for some unifying element not for TH-cam but to learn from myself. Like the antlers, they were all 'the same' yet some I like, some not. I'll rewatch too. Maybe someday I'll be brave enough to get an Etsy.

Talk about Christmas magic, your oil bottle came out of the kiln with the nozzle installed! Wow! 🤣
I love the face mugs and jugs. Truth be told, it was a wonderful load, and I love every piece! I must admit, I had to look up wassail. There are a number of different, sometimes conflicting accounts. One source said it was a form of mulled cider. It's attributed to old English, Norse, Welsh and possibly Druid traditions. Some say it was from the Norse for "good health" and other sources say it was a tradition of going into the orchards/fields, and performing a ritual involving drinking spirits to ensure a good harvest for the next growing season..
I think, like many other traditions, as cultures changed the customs of old religions get blended into the new one, preserving old ways and even giving nonconformists a way to keep practicing a now forbidden belief system.
It's amazing what we learn when we dig just a little into things that seem mundane and familiar. Thanks for posting, and triggering my curiosity!

Remember you heard it here first. Flying dogs and reindeer, YES. Red nose reindeer, NO, a story made up by a department store. Historian and museum curates stress using proper names and usage for pots but they themselves don't have agreement on multi handled cup/bowl like pots. I like the word tyg, I've seen loving cups, calling them possets would really lose people. So today I'm calling them wassailing cups and someone at the show with the right cultural background recognized them as that. Also, at the show with some varying history I had an encounter with the Belsnickel. This one was a bit watered down, still I narrowly escaped a beating.

@@astiandjoel hey. spotted and enjoyed your short from Roxann's back when it first came out. artist lifestyle so much more interesting and more to be learned than from a how to. two iPhones, the first wouldn't pick up sound, the second wont upload to my computer till it's been in the phone for a month. so every time i drop my Fuji FinePix S700 off the roof of the truck I replace it cheaply $35-$50 often used once still in the box, made back at the turn of the century. sorry for delay from my artist living in a shack in the woods. if you plan a trip out of the country your dog can stay here with me.
