  • Making pottery lids and getting it right requires procession for success. The element of shrinkage and clay memory come into play too. Getting it wrong with consistent precession can be a failure, spectacularly. Do you like making lids?

I hear you on making honey pots. One year, I had an order for 100. By the end, I KNEW I was not happy as a production potter It took me years to make another, I was so sick of them, lol. It was my students who got me making them again as they wanted to learn. The lifting pad is genius!

LOL. Once you master doughnut ring jugs wouldn't you like them as a production idem, and you did it too. th-cam.com/video/CArnh0242_0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=QdPDqH_YoQzgNqpa and some nice gravy boats too in your last video.

@pottersjournal Donuts will always be in my inventory as I love throwing/morphing them. But I'm the type who needs constant challenge and change in the studio. I'm a little kid who gets bored easy, lol.

Oh my Jeff I think you win the prize for your stash of "spare" lids! That's quite a large box truck also. I use a plastic ruler with a big sharpie line for somewhat close measurements. I haven't attempted making a lided vessel yet so I'd better put that on my to do list.
    Have a great week!

I may be sorry, but I just wedged up clay for 12 more jars to 'fit' the new batch of extra lids. It's still fresh in my head I'll try 2 then go for the rest.

LOL, Jeff, my hubby would shoot me if I brought home an old truck for a kiln shed...although I've thought about buying an old camper to move my throwing stuff to. 😉
Actually, I do use a grill cover over the kiln when it's not in use, so it is protected from the elements. It's just inconvenient when I need to fire and we have several days of rain.
I feel your pain on the lids, and wonder if a damp sponge on the edges would have removed just enough to make them fit? Anyway, now I've got to make some honey pots. Thanks! 🤣😁

When I first came back to making pots, 2017, I kept the camera far back. More confidant now it's in closer but I still try to distract you with some story. Thanks for putting me in the pro's category.
Now the important stuff. Sam is not my kind of dog but until his hair come in on entire back side, he needs a place to heal outside the shelter. He doesn't like my kind of farm but did come back when he ran off from 1/2 mile to a sense of home I gave him. My Ralph's were both pray driven and loved keeping the rodent away on my farm, I didn't fight their nature. Both so different in size and looks, personality, a boy and girl both loving and so totally loyal in their own way.
Now do make at least one lidded jar, you can make the lid flat on the wheel.
