Meet the Bags Packed Family: Jonathan and Kelly, along with our three adventurous children. Nine years ago, we embarked on an incredible journey, leaving our home in Alaska, USA, behind to explore the world. As teachers, we were fortunate to find amazing opportunities in Chennai, India, where we spent two enriching years. Seeking new experiences, we then made our way to the United Arab Emirates.
Just as we were settling into our UAE life, the pandemic struck, but it didn't dampen our spirits. Instead, we saw it as an opportunity for another chapter in our journey. We moved to Indonesia, where we currently hold teaching jobs, and it has been a time of learning, growth, and connection.
As a family, we thrive on traveling and embracing the unknown. Adventures are our way of life, and through our experiences, we aim to inspire our children to be confident in meeting new people, trying diverse cuisines, and immersing themselves in different languages and cultures.

@@BagsPackedFamilyIf you are still in Jogja, you should try many kinds of mushroom dishes in Jejamuran Restaurant. You may search in google map to find the place. I guess your family especially your wife will love it, since they cook delicious dishes of mushrooms, but the taste is so similar to beef. Great taste, vegan friendly.
When you arrive West Sumatera, you should try sate padang Mak Syukur in Padang Panjang (a very famous and legendary sate padang). And try pokat ketan (sticky rice that serves with avocado juice), nasi goreng and mie goreng (minang style) in Rumah Makan Gumarang in Padang Panjang. They are great taste. Oh how i miss minang cuisine in west sumatera so much. Have fun!
Don't forget to try rendang at RM Selamat in Bukittinggi (search in google map). Rendang that had been named as the best food in the world by CNN years ago comes from this legendary restaurant. You should come early in the morning so you won't run out of the rendang. While you are in Bukittinggi, you must visit Jam Gadang in front of RM Selamat. Jam Gadang is a giant clock tower that is built in 1925 given by dutch queen Wilhelmina.
Very close to Jam Gadang is Pasar Atas, you must visit to see traditional market with many kinds of traditional food and snacks.
Still in Bukittinggi, you should try itiak lado mudo (a very spicy duck dish in green chili/sambal) in Ngarai Sianok. Ngarai Sianok is a very beautiful panoramic valley). Also come to Lobang Jepang (Japanese Tunnel), an underground historical landmark that was built by Indonesian people during Japan colonial period. Bukittinggi also has Rumah Makan Family Benteng that serves the legendary traditional minang dish "ayam pop". The chicken is delicious and not sipcy.
Don't forget to try minang cuisine in Pongek Or Situjuah in Payakumbuh. They have great taste and beautiful landscape. Oh, while you are in Padang, you must visit RM Lamun Ombak for great taste minang cuisine, not so far from the airport. Also try singkong balado (sweet & spicy fried cassava snack) in Christine Hakim store at the town.

hey guys just want to share something, if you travelling/get with belly/stomach ache at indonesia you need to get "tolakangin" syrup, and also bring couple of "plossa".. its common ache for locals at tropical area, wear warm clothes and reduce air intake/inside your skin/body when travel with more clothes that covering your body.. enjoy indonesia
You have to try Gudeg yu djum( It's dry gudeg) and gudeg bu slamet(not too sweet gudeg) Both are delicious, tempo gelato prawirotaman( the ice cream is like ice cream in italy), sate klathak pak pong, tengkleng gajah(the food is made of goat beef not the elephant😂 because the means of elephant in bahasa is Gajah), kopi klotok (coffee), bakmi Jowo(there serve Traditional noodle and Fried rice), sop ayam pak min(chicken soap), angkringan, ayam geprek(it's spicy chicken), kopi joss(the Unique coffee, There is Charcoal inside )

There are lots of tourism and culinary delights in the Yogyakarta area and its surroundings... Magelang.. Boyolali Selo.. Sleman.. Klaten.. Gunung Kidul beach..... And all of that is very close together. I hope you can visit it sir

Hello from Cibubur (Bogor) my favourite lovely family..and you're in my family's favourite city. We go there like every year, since our children were as old as Forest. You should try "Sate kambing dan sapi pak Amat" in Alun alun Utara. They serve beef sate besides lamb & chicken. The traditional soup is also delicious.

I reccomendation for take Tolak Angin if your body feeling not well. It very famous traditional medicine for Indonesian people. Like if the body feels sore, the throat feels sore or even the stomach feels sick. It works perfectly. And for the kids you must buy Tolak Angin for kids 😊

you should by GUDEG is famous food in yogyakarta,, and that's veggie food match for kelly.. it's made form jackfruits..
it is for real something to improve in indonesian common foods to provide choices of vegetarian meals, i do understand your struggles. gudeg traditional food from Jogja and kopi klotok a hype traditional household meal restaurant they serve most of their foods as vegetarian friendly, you should try those for your next family trip there!

Wow. You're already in Jogjakarta. Nicknamed the Educated City, It Was Formerly the Capital of Indonesia. Jogja is famous for its leader who is a Sultan, the Gajah Mada University campus, and the Borobudur Temple.
Malioboro is included among them.
If you re looking for good quality batik I recommend to go to Margaria batik located in Malioboro, its nice.
You should try sate ratu, one of the best sate in Jogja
