Everest Base Camp Trek Day 8 - Base Camp to Kala Patthar

- I made it to Base Camp! The grand finale of my Everest Base Camp Trek Day 8 is by far the best video I’ve produced of the trip. From Lobuche we continued the trek over to Gorakshep. After dropping off some unrequired hiking gear we walked further and finally made it to Everest Base Camp. Getting up close to the Khumbu Ice Fall was one of the highlights of Base Camp. Huge ice walls and rocks peppered the surface of the glacier. The following day we woke up before sunrise and made our way on the trek to Kala Patthar, which is where I’ve laid my Aunty’s photograph to rest.

BTW, I MADE THIS INCREDIBLE BIT OF GEAR

That was emotional..ufff..fantastic video..well done
Thanks so much, was an incredible experience in an outstanding part of the world.
Well, my son wow what a journey and a fantastic job done in remembrance of you aunt Linda. this is something I will treasure for the rest of my days and you will have a fantastic story for all 8 of your own kids when you have them. So well done fruit of my loins so proud of you and giving me something I never thought I would ever have, many thanks old boy love you so much and god bless looking forward to your arrival home soon. DAD xxxx
Awww thanks Dad! Glad you enjoyed it. Haha and yes definitely something to show the kids, whenever they may arrive. You can safely say that a Hepton has been to Everest Base Camp now. Just about to check in at the Airport for my first flight. I’ll see you on the other side! Xxx
My son returned from there yesterday and was unable to trek up Kala Patthar due to Altitude sickness too. Your Aunt and your family must be really proud of you and your Aunt can now contemplate Everest all through the day. Well done.
Thank you so much. I just wanted her to be in the perfect place. Yes I can imagine, it’s really tough hiking up there, but at least he saw Base Camp, an amazing trip and you must be proud too. Thank you again for your kind words.
Your series on EBC was amazing. I am going with my son this November. I am double your age and was hoping to get up Kala Pattar but after seeing this think I may have to stay in Gorak Shep that morning. Congratulations on sharing your emotional journey. We scattered my father's ashes in the mountains as was his wish and then more recently my mother's so your video brought back many bittersweet memories
Brother you did the right thing by turning back. I was in a similar situation in Peru. They drove us up to a glacier that was at 17,000ft. They drove us up to 16,000ft. I walked halfway up and turned around I was so sick. My fingernails were a light blue color. Everything was in slow motion. My stomach was upset. It's better to be safe than sorry. Nice video great views. Good job.
Will be there April 23rd.I Really enjoy all your documentaries and this one was the best . Very emotional and good on you remembering a loved one . Even I shed a tear . We are all human .
Thanks very much for watching and for your kind words. Was an epic trip.
Thanks for such beautiful emotional episodes.Tribute to Aunt .
Thank you for sharing your “experience’s”.
From being a 10 year old in 1957 I have had a goal-and- desire to summit Everest, alas it is not to be in the flesh . However because of “you and other like minded people “ wishing to share their experiences through this medium , I feel I have now been in spirit .
Anti Linder will always be with you.
Thank you so much John. I’m glad you enjoyed my video and thank you for the warm words.
Great vídeos. Just subscribed. Godspeed.
Namaste 🙏 and greeting from Sydney,I had the pleasure of flying from Kathmandu to kalapathar in April 2018,we spent about 20mins there, which almost fulfilled a childhood dream,I then did EBC trek in nov 2018 which did complete the dream ( summit out of the question, age 62 ),I have watched your vlog lots and enjoy both the scenery and the emotion, brilliant
a great adventure and touching tribute to your beautiful Aunt, I'm sure she was there with you...an epic view...thank you for sharing, save trekking...Namaste
Namaste. Thank you very much and glad you enjoyed it.
Hi Russ. I just encountered to your channel while searching for the infos on everest, becuz somehow I thought of Everest trekking after my father passed away recently. And it's a coincidence that I get to watch this video. I guess your aunt is probably watching over mt.Everest from heaven, happily.
Yuri Jeong thank you so much for your comment, Yuri. It was the perfect place to place part of her soul. I hope it finds you well and if you plan on hiking everest for similar reasons, I wish you all the very best of luck. If you have any questions let me know.
Thank you 🙏 so much for sharing that moment with us , the world 🌎 feels so much more human despite the fact that we are sad for your loss , you are also celebrating your Aunt’s life , she must have had a beautiful soul indeed ! Peace ✌️ and love 💗 from the paradise island 🌴 of Mauritius 🇲🇺. I did the Annapurna circuit back in 2018 and it was a very emotional moment for me as well when crossing the Thorong La pass and the loss of loved ones accompanied me every step of the way , my mom and dad’s spirit carried me all the way to the top . They gave me angels 👼 wings .
What a sweet man. Aunty Linda would be proud x
Emotion one...but the peak was viewed and she will always be happy for this and bless you always .
Probably the best EBC videos I've seen, well done. Great to have such a personal touch to it.
You made it. So emotional as well. Thanks for taking me on a journey with you.
Ahh thanks so much for the kind words. Glad you enjoyed it. 👍
So touching and heartfelt. Absolutely beautiful journey and thank you for opening up. You are an incredible man.
Ahhh thanks so much Jason for the warm words. It was a incredible journey and one so close to my family and I. Hope you get to see it if you haven’t already. All the best and thank you for watching.
Dear Russell,
Just viewed your episode for the second time after finishing the EBC trek myself mid November 2019.
It was even more moving to see than the first time now knowing what it takes to climb especially Kala Patthar.
Your video made sure I ate plenty the evening before (not that I ever lost my apetite during the whole trek 🤞😉) and had that pair of dry socks for this extremely cold morning, we heard it was -15C°...
The exhaustion of 8 days trekking and then this climb together with the memory of my dad who passed away in 2013 and loved the mountains made it a tough morning. Looking at your video now, I think I stopped more or less the same location. That was my top, views were not going to change any more and a perfect place to build my stoneman and add and extra stone for my dad to it...
Thank you for sharing your journeys, emotions (and usefull tips 😊). Keep on travelling and hopefully sharing!
All the best from The Netherlands; Carlyn!
Hi Carlyn. Thanks so much for your warm and kind words and I’m glad you found the video inspiring and useful. It really means a lot to hear and to know that you had a good trip. It’s one that I’ll never forget. My thoughts go to you and your dad as well. Thank you so much and happy trails. Russ
Really glad to see this video on here, I just binge-watched your whole trip. I watched it before my first trip to EBC and learnt a lot from your experience. Hoping you get to do some more of this, the 3 high passes would make an amazing series. I was doing it in March 2022 and got a chest infection after the Kongma La pass so it's still there waiting for me! Cheers!
Amazing...props to you for remembering your aunt in such a special way.
Thanks so much Joe. She’s up there now looking over Everest. It helped my mum with coming to terms with her loss.
Thank you so much for sharing your journey with us. I've loved watching your videos and its encouraged me to make plans for my own trip.in 2021. Good luck with your future adventures.
that was moving in the end.. your aunt will be proud
Well done, my friend! I am very emotional too watching you. Well done. Bravo.
Thanks Priyam. Means a lot.
I really am touched by your whole journey....it looks like such a surreal experience. I watched all the vlogs too. I loved your tribute at the end
I know Im watching this a few years later but you are an honorable young man and wishing you all the best with your great life and amazing journeys !
oh my god, that was so emotional, brilliantly done clip
Thank you very much. Was the only place to leave that photo.
All of your hiking adventures are just incredible! It’s a real pleasure following your channel and getting inspiration from your videos. Remember that your auntie is always going to be looking down on you and making sure you stay safe during all of your epic hikes and through all of the adventures you embark on in life.
Thank you so much for being so kind. I really appreciate it. Yeah it was such a warming feeling knowing that photograph is up there and it did our family a lot of good while bringing a lot of closure as well. Thank you.
Wow, What an incredible experience, those glaciers and mountains looked stunning! We understand any altitude sickness as we recently did the Inca Trail to Manchu Picchu! You did really well, a terrific vlog 😀👍
Aww thank you so much guys. It was really and truly the most incredible trip of my life and I wanted to have it mean something. It’s a terrific feeling to reach that altitude, Hha but also terrible as well. Oh wow I’d love to go to Machu Pichu. I’ll make sure I’ll watch your video of it. Thanks again for your kind words and thank you for watching. Russ
Great video and beautiful photography. I have a friend who has just touched base camp today. Amazing efforts by all that attempt it and those that succeed, take my hat off to all of you. Once in a lifetime experience that will stay with you forever. Your family will be so proud of you and lots will see your aunties photo.
Thank you so much Julie.
Kudos for capturing it ALL. Great little film, you have a talent for editing as well as commentating
Thanks so much Lexster
Incredible journey and moving video. Well done.
Ahh thanks so much Ralph really means a lot.
Good job, when you said you were going to do base camp and kala patthar in one day? I thought no way, I went there 20 years ago.
I think it’s possible for sure but you’d have to arrive and Gorak Shep and sleep first haha. Thanks for watching.
Had me choking up there! Wow what an incredible journey, respect. your family must be very proud. 👍
Beautiful stuff man! Very emotional, perfectly filmed series! This is the best I've watched in preparation for my trek in September. Thank you
Thanks Alex. Glad you enjoyed the vid. Was a really good trip both for the scenery and the self growth. Any questions let me know and good luck for your trip in September. 👍👍👍
I absolutely loved this series, thanks so much mate for sharing your epic trek. I'm planning to do the same in 2021. Really enjoyed it and all the useful tips will surely help me when I finally set off. Cheers mate!
Michael Dwyer Thankyou. I’ll do the same with the diamox, if travel is back to normal and I can get over there. All the best
I really like your journey. Well done have a good trip
The KT thank you very much. Means a lot and glad you enjoyed it. All the best. Russ

What a truly amazing video...
Very moving and inspirational. Your entire Family must be so proud of your achievements.
You done the right thing turning back. Your Aunt would've wanted you to make the right decision to continue on in your life.
I Wish you all the future success in everything you do.
Live Long and Prosper my friend :-D:-D:-D
Ahhh thanks so much for your kind words. Really means a lot. It was a trek of epic proportions and one I’ll never forget. Made my mum very proud indeed. Thank you.
The Trail Hunter
I really Admire all you Trail Hunter's..you have desires to reach these Altitudes and have incredible experiences...
I unfortunately have bad circulation, so sub Zero temps& high Altitude is off the cards for me, but thanks to you sharing I truly get to see how Epic Stuff EBC is-love hill walking but have thee numbest fingers and toes if I hill walk in winter times.
A bit fearful to be honest lol!
At the thought of High Altitude exposure to the Elements.
Thanks for replying Bro ;-)
All the best for all your future Trail Hunting Adventures!
Good job man...ur aunt and me share the same birthday..10 yrs apart...u did good man....
Thanks mate. Yeah. Far too young. I always wonder if the photo’s still there. Hope you’re good man.
@@thetrailhunter4469 ur video was really inspiring..will surely give EBC a shot one day..hopefully the photo is still there..
Nice series of videos bro!👍 maybe low blood sugar/ altitude combo if you didn’t eat that morning.. keep on trekking 😃
Thank you for taking us along with you on this epic trek. I learned a lot from your trekking tips. I wish you had completed your summit on Kala Patthar but you made the correct decision.
Thanks so much! Was an epic trip for sure and one I’ll never forget.
@@thetrailhunter4469 I'm on my way there in October. I'll make sure my friends and I do not disturb your aunt's photo while ascending and descending Kala Patthar.
Love it mate 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Rest in peace Linda.
Bless you, that was real!
Congrats! Sorry about the exhaustion and altitude...loved the honesty. I'm 67 and just did EBC, but needed an extra day for KP, so I'd go again and see more. Started 1/2 diamox at Namche and increased going higher. It's a tough hike but so worth it. If you don't die or have to be choppered out, it's a win.
Thanks very much and glad you enjoyed it. It was incredible and yes, would do it again in a heart beat.
good info, beautiful video's, i'm planning 2go in 2024-01, saw a lot of vlogs and video till so far, from U is the best. not a lot of views , must have ''nepal'' , '' mount everest, .i greetings from the Netherlands - Danny Nesh.
You turned red ....episods are awsome
I'm crying in ball
Hha ah I hope you enjoyed it. 👍
Love this video mate. Hoping one day will get to do EBC
What’s the song at the end of the video can I ask? Sounds bliss
Ahh thanks so much mate. Means a lot. I can’t remember off the top of my head but I’ll check and get back to you. Definitely go man, it’s like walking through a painting. 🤙
Just finished the series, looked phenomenal mate. I'll be doing the Annapurna circuit and/or EBC this October so this was a good insight. What's the music you used for the intro? Cheers.
Ahh thanks very much and thanks for watching! Glad it’s been a good insight, that’s really what I want my hiking videos to be is a good insight and resource to the hiking community to thanks! Ahh wicked, I’ll definitely return for the Annapurna Circuit but thought “I’m in Nepal, can’t leave without doing Base Camp.” The music I used is from a website called Artlist.io I’m sorry I’ll have to fish out the track from the folder in the project tomorrow. Another good one for music is Epidemic Sound. Pretty good.
Let me know which treks you do in Nepal by the way!
The Trail Hunter Only recently discovered your channel & it’s a great blend of hiking / travelling. Will do, Annapurna is a definite and I’m considering doing EBC after as I’ll already be acclimatised by then. I’m planning on going with a friend although if he drops out I’ll carry on solo, possibly with a guide. Ok nice one, I’ll have to check that out.
5:18 hello again and what do trekkers do if there is no enough room for everyone in Gorakshep?
Hi bro, love you, your video made me cry. Thank you very much bro
I wish to be there much EBC, help me how can?
Thanks so much and glad you enjoyed the video on an emotional level. Hmm first you need to figure out when you would like to. Spring and Autumn are the most popular times of year. But you can go all year round. Watch my video on best times of year. That would be a good place to start. th-cam.com/video/9-AnLjrD2Wo/w-d-xo.html
The Trail Hunter thank you bro, I wish to know how to hire guide or porter bro?
Where do you get your music from?
Hey mate you related to Phil Strudwick?
Hi mate. Not as far as I know. It’s my uncle’s surname.
The Trail Hunter ok all good he’s from Slough and lives in Sydney now
Heard you on a podcast and realised I’ve seen your vids - they’re great. Going in April. Psyched!
Ahh haha I don’t know any other Strudwick’s so maybe there’s a relation! I’ll ask my uncle. Nice one man, good luck on the trip. You’ll love it.
The Trail Hunter cheers, going with my brother and planning on doing similar things as what you did with your aunt’s photo for our other brother who died in 1992. Just love the idea of them getting a view to such an epic location 🤟🏼
One question. How long going up Kala Pattar before you see Everest? Can you do just part of it?
Hi James. Thank you so much for your kind words and I send my condolences for your mother and father, but what an incredible place to scatter their ashes. As for Kala Patthar, you can see the summit of Everest from about a 3rd of the way up so no, you don’t need to go the whole way. Try to get a goodnight’s sleep if you can and eat plenty before you head out. I struggled the night before and didn’t have enough to eat so the cold and altitude really kicked me in the butt. Thanks for watching, it’s an incredibly trip and I hope it offers you everything you ever dreamed of. Any more questions, do let me know. 👍
@@thetrailhunter4469 thanks Russell for the tips. I will give it a shot. Once again thanks for taking us on your wonderful journey
Hi, how many days it took for whole trekking??
The whole trip took 12 days. 9 days up and 3 days down. Thanks for watching. 👍
And everybody says this is so easy. Anybody can climb Everest with enough money. What a bunch of crap.
