  • This is the first sonata by Domenico Scarlatti I've ever played. The pedaling was a bit of a nightmare and the piece leaves you nowhere to hide in those terms when being translated over to the modern piano, although that's characteristic of a lot of music from this period. The score shown is from IMSLP and is not the version I used in learning the sonata. I got the Schirmer's book of 60 Scarlatti sonatas that has almost zero interpretive markings so I wrote my own in as I worked on the piece. A truly phenomenal keyboardist, it's reported that in 1709 Scarlatti and George Frideric Handel engaged in a musical duel on both harpsichord and organ, with Scarlatti edging out Handel on the harpsichord and Handel winning the organ portion of the contest.
