- The US Air Force is preparing to bid farewell to one of its longest-serving and most iconic aircraft, the McDonnell-Douglas KC-10 Extender tanker. After more than four decades of service, the final KC-10s are set to be decommissioned, marking the end of an era.
Thanks for your service 🇱🇷
They were a long-standing fixture at RAF Mildenhall & will be sadly missed 🙏
Spent many Yeats flying C141s at Travis along side the KC10 and C5. Sad to see her go.
Personally I think that as with the B-52 and it’s maintenance , overhaul and upgrade programs why not do the same with the KC-10 fleet thus keeping a proven design in service rather than FORCING a problem laden, unreliable and INFERIOR DESIGN on our military people. Has our military command staff and procurement people lost their collective mind???
What a joke, we need more options than 2 or 3 companies.
Politics prevents Airbus from competing.
Airbus
@@charlesharper2357 L0CKHEED TRIED T0 W0RK WITH AIRBUS F0R THE NEW TANKER BUT US REFUSED. THE REST 0F NAT0 "KN0W" WHAT A BIG MISTAKE G0ING WITH B0EING WILL BE. T0 HAVE T0 CHANGE THE "RULES" T0 AWARD ANYTHING T0 B0EING IS BEC0MING THE N0RM.
@@pietjepuk2072 Nope. American companies.
Do we have enough 46 to replace all of the retired kc-10?
Sometimes he says KC-46 and other times KC-40?
Ya, what the hell is that all about?
Reliability and capability. The KC30A (MRTT) is so much more capable then the 46.
If they would have gone Airbus for the tanker contract’ they would have hell to pay. The awarding of this contract is why Airbus refused bid on the new Airforce one, they had zero chance to win the contract.
Boeing has bought too many politicians to lose.
We refueled behind the KC10 a bit differently. We would rendezvous at 9,000 feet and refuel at 10,000. Our refueling speed was different as well, 190 knots. Guess the aircraft I flew?
Ironic the DC-10 left passenger service because of safety issues. And now, many years later, Boeing has the same reputation.
Why did the air force spend probably billions of dollars on this aircraft. Now getting rid of it , the k46 which I hear it’s way over priced and lots of problems!
Age of the aircraft, out of production and unavailability of spare parts.
Typical military picking the wrong aircraft because of some dumb ass civilian oversight or something like that.

they should give them to ukraune .. certainly they can use them for something
Tri engine aircraft are a nightmare for maintenance.
But they're so pretty
KC46 flop.
United States needs to give some of these to Nato add to Poland and the Baltic Nations upgrade this plan be able to build them of their own not as big as a Kasey 10, if Ukraine had just two of them and I flew pretty close to Poland's border Ukraine Poland and all of the allied countries that are by Poland and Ukraine would be able to have Casey 10 review capability at will. But you would have to put up fighter cover for the Casey 10s.
It's KC not what you called it.
1st!
Who cares!
Boeing has certainly had more than it’s share of problems with its products in recent years and this raises questions about the wisdom on the Air Forces part in accepting an inferior product. Personally as with the B-52 and the overhaul and upgrade program for it I cannot understand why the Air Force doesn’t institute the same for the KC 10 fleet rather then accept an obviously inferior aircraft full of reliability issues! Perhaps we should get back to MERIT BASED promotions among our military command staff rather than the “WOKE,DEI” mind virus infected crop of command level personnel that America has currently been inflicted with. This would be an important first step in the procurement of better equipment for our military men and women! General Mark Miley being a shining example of what comes from WOKE/DEI!
The KC-10 kept running out of fuel!
