  • Journey with me to the fabled gold and silver regions of Colorado with a ride aboard the spectacular Georgetown Loop Railroad! This museum line operates out of Silver Plume, Colorado on a small remnant of the old narrow gauge Colorado & Southern. The highlight is a heart pounding run across Devil’s Gate High Bridge - a marvel of 19th Century engineering.
    All aboard, amigos!

I loved your comment " Going under the trestle is just as exciting as going over it' I was fortunate to be the Engineer of the day at Roaring camp in Santa Cruz. The old corkscrew trestle did just that.

That was a fun one. I remember when they were reconstructing the line in the 1970s. My family drove up to Silverplume to explore the work in progress. The high bridge hadn't been rebuilt but I think new piers had been poured. We started hiking down the valley along the roadbed toward Georgetown. My younger brothers were tired and cranky so Dad took them back to the car where my mother was waiting. I hiked on down to Georgetown all the way to the freeway exit where I sat and waited and waited and waited until one of the town police officers showed up and asked me if I was lost. "Nope, just waiting for my parents to pick me up." They were in a parking lot near where the line ended in Georgetown. I'd hiked much further than anyone figured a 10 year old would. I've ridden the line several times since, and in the '90s was fortunate to have a good friend who lived in Silverplume and was a museum docent and guide at the mine. She rode the train to work each day.

That was my first experience with narrow gauge railroad when I rode it back in 2019. Ever since I have been fascinated in it and start to model in hon3. Hope to finish the build of locomotive 111 soon.

I remember visiting here a couple times as a 10 or 11 year old kid in love with trains. Now as a 31 year old falling in love with trains again i cant wait to go back.

What I find so fascinating is the difference in the landscape between the old photos and today. Notice the lack of trees then and now.

That whole area is full of the stuff that all narrow gauge and mining enthusiasts dream of! We spent a couple nights in Georgetown 6 or 7 years ago, riding the train and seeing the sights at the Argo Tunnel. Would love to go back some day, but it’s a pretty good haul from NC!

Looks like you have had a great trip. I have to put this on the ever growing things to do when we do our 4 Corners trip in about 2 years I have to time the trip to be in some little town in Arizona for a open house

Stumbled across this video looking for inspiration for a train track I'm making in a videogame. Now considering the next family vacation!

Wonderful video brought back a lot of memories. Most of you will not believe this. Back in the 70s my good friend Malcolm Furlow & my wife & I attended the Narrow Gauge Convention in Denver. The big talk at the convention was the Georgetown Loop High bridge was built & finished (no trains running yet). Malcolm said that afternoon lets ride over to Georgetown & take some photos. On the way there Malcolm dared me to walk across the bridge When we got to the bridge Malcolm & my wife got out the old 35MM & starting shooting photos of the surroundings. Malcolm looked up at the bridge & asked my wife who was the idiot on top of the high bridge. My wife said it was her Idiot Husband. Took a couple of photos for Malcolms files & reference material & off we went before the police showed up. Yes i did cross the bridge & walked back across to meet up with my wife & Malcolm. See being from Florida we just do not have any HIGH NARROW GAUGE BRIDGES & I had to do it

There are those who'll argue in favour of steam, or of diesel. Some prefer UK railways, while others swear by the U.S. railroads. Surely we can all agree though, that there is 𝒏𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 that compares with an American steam whistle in the right hands?👍😁

What time of year did you go? We're going in the summer and are concerned if the open air cars would be too hot for our little kids.
