REL T/9x subwoofer compared to its legendary predecessor the REL T/9i

  • We compare the new 2021 REL T/9X to the beloved REL T/9i. The REL T/9x is the largest subwoofer in REL's completely revised T series. Do the changes to the amp, cabinet, and driver deliver enough sonic improvements to warrant an upgrade?
    Your host Duncan Taylor has used a pair of REL T/9i's for years to power the low end of his system, and he puts these new T/9x subs to the test.

    Hi Duncan, very useful thank you. I just took delivery of a T9x today - to replace a T5i (I was thinking of running both, but seriously there is no need I don’t think you’d even hear it, so will likely be going on eBay!!). Fantastic sounding sub I’m super-pleased with it straight off the bat it’s giving me extremely deep, clean bass with my AE309’s using the supplied Neutrik connection👌looking forward to further tweaking and fine-tuning over the next week or so.

      I guess your idea of 'extremely deep' needs some rethinking. 27 hz (-6db) inroom. lolz.

    Hi Duncan,
    Very like your sharing. Anyway, I see you use Vicoustic Super Bass Extreme as bass traps, but they affect only 60-125Hz and most effective in 75-100hz. But Rel T9i or x can go down to 28hz. So is the Vicoustic appropriate for Sub Rel?

    I have purchased one 9x and am waiting for a second to arrive. I have the Q Acoustics Concept 300s. Where did you set the crossover?
    Thanks

    Hi Duncan, I have a single T/7i and have been planning get a second one. Do you thinks it’s worth adding a t/7x or should I stay within the same line and get another t/7i? Btw. big fan of the Podcast, some of it is over my head, but so much gold ❤️

    Nice ! I still have my old T1 that is over 15yrs old now and blew the amp by the lighting hit so 8 yrs ago REL service did sell me the new amp module for very reasonable price and since than it's been perfect .
    I have a smaller 13x18 room and T1 feels it great and makes my Monitor stand speakers sound huge and powerful.
    I always wondered what upgrade new version would bring , would it be better to get two T5s rather than one T9 ? My system is two channel stereo so could I connect these in mono configuration by using RELs speaker level connection method and how would I connect it than as each connector has 3 wires L,R , Ground ?

    • @Roof_Pizza
      @Roof_Pizza ปีที่แล้ว

      What is a 'very reasonable price'? I'm kinda thinking it isn't.

    • @kdomster9141
      @kdomster9141 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Roof_Pizza I think it was around 160usd for the amp module , it is super easy to replace at home in no more than 5 to 10 minutes ... This was in their Sumiko days , who knows how it would be now .
      Blown up board would need 3 parts replaced , diode, resistor and cap as it looks like some sort of power surge destroyed them , and maybe I should have tried to repair it as it is easy single level SMD board if I remember correctly.

    According to John Hunter, head designer for REL, the amps in the T9i and T9x are virtually identical, with just 'a few minor tweaks', but exactly the same power.

    • @NemoPropaganda
      @NemoPropaganda 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My understanding is the the limiters were tweaked to allow for greater peaks and push the amp a bit further. REL is generally very conservative with their specs. I compared the 5i to 5x and had a similar experience to TMR.

  • @robinhook37
    @robinhook37 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I’m doubtful about the remarks that the 9x will make bass sound evenly anywhere in the room. It’s not scientifically possible. A 50hz bass wave has a ~7 meter wave length, which is the size of a typical room. There will be peaks and valleys at that wave length… it’s just science.

    The T/9x has an image more in line with what a subwoofer has to be. Its measurements are wider and lower compared to the T/9i.

    I've got a stereo pair of the T/5x.. hooked up via high level/speakon to a BAT VK-75SE and there's no way of getting around the 60hz hum. REL has been absent for the most part in assistance, so not really a big fan of their customer support. I am a fan of TMR Audio as this is where I purchased the BAT amp. Customer support has been fantastic and I highly recommend doing business with this company.

      They state a work around in their manual if there is a hum. Also make sure your equipment is grounded and the electricity you provide is clean (plugged into a nice surge protector as opposed to super cheap extension cords or surge protectors). I spend $50 on a single surge protector at minimum and have never had an issue.

    • @Yooyangs
      @Yooyangs 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cyberathlete Thanks for the reply. I've tried all of the work arounds, even contacted the designer of the amp. Going low level RCA from the preamp to the sub eliminated the hum, but also eliminated 90% of the bass. I have everything running through a Furman Elite-15. I've reduced the volume on the subs to about 35%. Still have a slight hum. I guess I'll live with it.

    • @erikhoogantink8529
      @erikhoogantink8529 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do the cables to your subwoofers ly parallel to some power cables? This could give the 60hz hum. And try to only ground one device, just your amplifier but not the subwoofers for example. It could be a potential difference between different grounded devices.

    • @Yooyangs
      @Yooyangs 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@erikhoogantink8529 Thanks for the input, nope wires aren't in parallel and both subs are not grounded as that's the only way on my particular amp to hook them up. 3 wire speakon, Red/Yellow to terminal... black floating. I've learned to deal with it. Can't tell when playing music.. just at idle.

    Hello, I am considering the T/9x. Could you tell me the dimensions of your room, please? I think mine may be similar. I am just a bit concerned that it may be too much for my room. Thank you for a great channel, I only discovered it this evening.

    • @tmr_audio
      @tmr_audio  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The dimensions of the room we tested and filmed in are approximately 11x22. The T/9x performed very well in there, and I would recommend starting with one and placing it into a structural corner at the front of the room, immediately behind the main front speakers. From there you can tweak and move it around to find the best response.
      It also gives you opportunity to upgrade or perhaps go for a stereo pair in the future. Hope this helps!
      Happy listening!
