  • This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Discussing the advancements and challenges in the field of nanomedicine, and its potential to improve therapeutic outcomes.
Dr. Emmanuel Ho joined the University of Manitoba, College of Pharmacy as an
Assistant Professor in 2010. He is also cross-appointed to the Faculty of Engineering, Department of Biomedical Engineering and the College of Medicine, Department of Immunology. He earned his Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of Toronto and was awarded numerous scholarships, most notably, an Industrial Post-Graduate Scholarship from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). As a post-doctoral fellow at the British Columbia Cancer Research Center, Dr. Ho was awarded the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Post-Doctoral Fellowship along with the Michael Smith foundation for Health Research Post-Doctoral Fellowship (MSFHR). His current research interests include the development and characterization of novel nanomedicines, medical devices, and vaccines for the treatment and prevention of HIV/AIDS. He was recently presented the 2013 Rh Award for Outstanding Contributions to Interdisciplinary Scholarship and Research and was the recipient of the 2014 GlaxoSmithKline / Canadian Society for Pharmaceutical Sciences Early Career Award. Dr. Ho’s research program is supported by grants from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, CIHR, Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI), Manitoba Health Research Council (MHRC), Manitoba Medical Service Foundation (MMSF), and the Dr. Paul Thorlakson Foundation Fund.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

So if nanos are self assembling, self replicating, & self healing do they overtime replicate and replace the organic you? Will we all become replicants?

Maybe but it would be so subtle you wouldn't notice. If you think about it we're always changing

If they're now at the point where they can direct nanomaterials to a tumor and reduce it's size then I'd say we must be pretty close.

I do have an idea how to manipulate these nano cells or genes (if intru' can't go more ) but the problem is everyone is after the money that they could get by selling the info...I'd rather keep it myself as my theory (atm) and after my course that'll be the time im foccusing in it... now?, never...and also the speaker tend to make the discussion more difficult where its just nano that is 2.5nm bigger than a cell and 6 nm small than a biomaker... anyways yes..it can helps but making it is impossible right now but using a medium and a carrier could make it possible...knowing the routes is also a plus...so see all specialists not just those in general ones...

They have found a cure, the cure just doesn't make as much money as the treatment lol

Why is it that natural medicine such as cannabis been suppressed? The US government has known THC has the ability to shrink tumors since the 70's. Yet instead of spending money on a natural drug that doesn't have negative side effects we spend money on nano technology. A technology that we don't know what the lasting effects will be.

Kate Kaiser I see your point but you understand that just like any other new drug on the market, any nanomedicine produced would undergo extensive lab testing, in real conditions before it's approved by the FDA or whatever drug regulatory agency it may be. We don't just make new drugs, mass produce them, and see what happens (most of the time, anyway?).

Hi Kate, I am reading your posting five years late. We are now seeing the application of unnatural drugs, claiming to be vaccines, untested and being forced on the world. The results will be devastating. Many people will be killed or deformed, and the drug barrens liability -free. May GOD help us all !!!!!!!
