I don't think people can really fully appreciate the level of animation here without trying sfm yourself, and then have the realization of this actually being made in gmod. Factoring the date and time in, undoubtedly, absolutely, insane.
It's an old way of doing it, in my opinion its better because its made in-engine instead of being only a set of anims. Civil Protection (A classic I recommend everyone watches again) did it, and it looks pretty smooth in some scenes. The guy who made Civil Protection actually has a tutorial up on how to do stuff like this, though its old and is probably broken.
This video alone shows how absolutely groundbreaking Half Life 2's facial animation was at the time. These models and rigs are from 2004. It's almost hard to believe. This video was also created before Source Filmmaker was a thing, makes it even more impressive the amount of work that probably went into this.
Honestly, they still are. All the recent games i've played have okay-ish facial animation but they don't feel organic like the HL2 ones. I think the closest i've seen are RDR2 and Half-Life Alyx (obviously)

The way this has better lip syncing, expressiveness, and cinematography than a lot of SFM animations while being made 2 years before SFM even existed is ridiculously impressive. The amount of care, passion, and time put into it is palpable.

His early work was a little too new wave for my taste, but when he came out with ‘the virtual end half-life 2’ I think he really came into his own, both commercially and artistically.

Honestly, some of my favorite gmod videos are from 2009-2012. Dasboschitt, Kitty0706, Rubberfruit, Raikujo. If you watched their more "recent content" as in, most of their channels ended around 2015 or earlier, you'd think they made content as recently as 2016 or even now. That's because a lot of SFM and GMod animators took notes from these great folks. Definitely check out Schwiggan. His animations were as clean as the one in the music video. Yes, he still makes videos to this day. Brings a tear to my eye.
Found this from a meme just today. Honestly, I found it funny from the start but now I just find this very unique seeing that this video doesn't even have any sfm included, and for it being a decade old shows how much this video was ahead of its time
I come back to this video every now and then because I missed it when TH-cam just had a bunch of people making whatever they want. There was no exploitation of the algorithm or clickbait, it was just doing stuff for the fun of it. Also it just goes hard.

this was actually a really good choice for the story of half life 2. the humans of earth fought with all their might against the combine, suffered heavy heavy losses to the environment and even if they do push them out, it doesn't matter. the combine are basically infinite. they have forces in numbers we can't even comprehend. to them, losing earth literally could not matter less. "i tried so hard, got so far, had to fall to lose it all, and it doesn't even matter."
not even counting all the alien species that got thrown onto earth and are eating it up inside out. even if they take out the combine how are they going to retake the planet back from all these new invasive alien lifeforms? from just what we saw it seems near impossible as we can't even control natural invasive species ourselves today. let alone a world where like 60-80% of the total populations already been wiped out.

his work might not have peaked on its release but its a long term effect that will be loved by future generations
His early work was a little too new wave for my taste, but when he came out with ‘the virtual end half-life 2’ I think he really came into his own, both commercially and artistically.

Honestly, some of my favorite gmod videos are from 2009-2012.
Dasboschitt, Kitty0706, Rubberfruit, Raikujo. If you watched their more "recent content" as in, most of their channels ended around 2015 or earlier, you'd think they made content as recently as 2016 or even now.
That's because a lot of SFM and GMod animators took notes from these great folks.
Definitely check out Schwiggan. His animations were as clean as the one in the music video. Yes, he still makes videos to this day. Brings a tear to my eye.

It unironically got me into rock. I started listening to the music because of this machinima i have seen after completing episode 2.
I come back to this video every now and then because I missed it when TH-cam just had a bunch of people making whatever they want. There was no exploitation of the algorithm or clickbait, it was just doing stuff for the fun of it. Also it just goes hard.

this was actually a really good choice for the story of half life 2. the humans of earth fought with all their might against the combine, suffered heavy heavy losses to the environment and even if they do push them out, it doesn't matter. the combine are basically infinite. they have forces in numbers we can't even comprehend. to them, losing earth literally could not matter less. "i tried so hard, got so far, had to fall to lose it all, and it doesn't even matter."
not even counting all the alien species that got thrown onto earth and are eating it up inside out.
even if they take out the combine how are they going to retake the planet back from all these new invasive alien lifeforms?
