It is amazing that someone is a part of our national team competing in the international scene and still nice enough to give advice to everyone who cares to listen. Thank you for you videos Thom and your work, especially solving the Brexit problem around getting Westin products in this country. I always learn from your videos, i love them.
Thanks mate, it seems every time I try and get on the water to make films this year the fishing is rubbish and simply not interesting to show. So I’ve gone back to these Kit room vids!
Best person to lession to get u on right track .I just order 7./21 grm..I b.c in 5 /20gm for crank baits....outer top video and bouncing the lure I try that. Keep up the videos..
Will be testing them out for the trout here on Lough Derg Ireland next spring, that 9cm size looks similar to the twitchbaits I normally use, look great 👌
Thanks Thom brilliant as always, your advice has improved my fishing to the point that I have caught more pike this season than ever before even though I was fishing for Perch. Also mainly on Westin Lures.
Jerkbaits, crankbaits, spinnerbaits & chatterbaits are all very much either ‘off’ or ‘on’ don’t make them try to work if not catching. Just keep trying them regularly
Brilliant video as per usual, I saw one of your videos the other day where you say that you think of fish with personalities and that Zander are so lazy that you think of them as sitting there all winter smoking a cigar and as such you have to put your lure on their nose and leave it there for them to take it. I found that a great way to think about presentation. Would it be possible to do a video on the personalities of pike, perch and Zander and compare how you target them differently to suit their personality?
Great video!!! I'm pike fishing mainly with japanese lures(ZipBaits,DUO,OSP)they're pieces of art and hydro engineering to fish them correctly twiching motion should come from the wrist only using the whole hand just make them moving unattractive and is almost impossible to trigger an inactive predator.
Bought a Tatula 300 baitcaster for lipless jerkbait rod. Tried it on water same day. Realised I need the 8.1x gear ratio and returned it instantly. Luckily it worked out. We call sliders/gliders (like Buster jerk), jerksbaits. The ones with lip, usually not bigger than 15cm, we call twitching wobblers.
Great video, thank you! I understand the speed/action of a rod for twitching. However have a question, what would be the best length for such a rod for off shore fishing?
Thought I’d replied to this but doesn’t seem to have uploaded. So a typical Jerkbait rod will be 6’6”-7’. The longer the rod the better for casting distance, the shorter the rod the more control you have over the lure. The Finesse T&C is 7’1” which is the top end for jerkbaits, but I’m quite tall and it works perfectly for me
No I’m not part of a shop. I work directly for Westin hence why I have a good knowledge of all their products and how they work. Simply type ‘Westin Jerkbite’ or ‘Westin Finesse T&C rod’ in to google and you’ll find loads of places that sell them 👍
Hi Thom, when it comes to large Jerkbaits for pike (10+ cm), when you fish them in a clear water situation do you change your braid colour to something natural? I just bought some Chartreuse line for my new heavy jerkbait combo but considering how thick the line is (0.28mm) and how clear the conditions are when these baits are best applied, do you think the bright line colour will put them off potentially? Would love to hear your thoughts.
If I’m honest I’m not totally sure. My instinct is to say no, braid colour doesn’t affect the fish too much, however I do fish a bit of flourocarbon (about 2-3ft) between my braid and wire trace to keep the braid away from the bait. I’d guess however that predators focus so much on the bait that they don’t notice the braid
Great content as usual Thom! Do you prefer AFW or titanium for the trace and do you find what you use affects the action of the lure? Also, casting across the current rather than up or down stream, doesn’t the presentation on the pause/glide suffer? Thanks in advance and for all your expertease 👍
Hi Paul, I use AFW in 11lb. A lot of people use single strand titanium and I hear good reports I just personally can’t get on with the jet black colour of it. So yes, on a river it’s difficult to fish these baits across the flow as there’s never any slack line, the flow constantly creates a bow. Similar to a walk the dog surface lure on a flowing river, you just can’t get the rhythm/action right. Directly up or down stream would be ok though. Not brilliant, but ok
Hi John. The 5-15g is good with any 1000-2500 size reel. Smaller for small venues like canals, larger for bigger venues like bigger river or reservoirs. Shimano is always a good bet, just whatever fits your budget. I have some Shimano Stradic, Vanford and Ultegra reels they’re all good 👍
Great vid as usual Thom thank you. The question occurs to me, what would you do in very low viz? I tried the Gloucester Canal last week and it was a few inches viz at best. Deep too ... I was scratching my head.
I’ve had a number of big Zander out of the Gloucester canal when I lived near there. Typically it’s about 10-14ft deep down the middle. The ‘top end’ (Gloucester) is coloured most of the time. There’s either small Zander less than 1.5lb or occasional big ones (8-15lb+) and not much in between. So go for the big ones and fish positive like 10-16cm baits. The Sharpness end is clear and some areas have good pike fishing, and there’s good perch too but they’re really tough to find. Generally…. Stick close to all the bridges or locks, that’s when most of the fish are
@@Thomhuntfishing thankyou I’ll have another look and keep the great uploads comming no matter how good we think we are you always teach us something new 👍
Ha ha thanks. We’re all learning, me included. That’s why I like to have these conversations and get involved with different people as we all have something to teach
Hi there, ummmm blimey I’ve had that set up for years. I think it’s an old Gunki handle that is discontinued now, and not sure on the head it’s just a screw in option that came separately
Hi Thom, great video as usual, I've just ordered two 9cm 9g versions from Sweden 😅 Was wondering what trace you use, and what knots you use to attach to braid?
I use the AFW Micro Surflon Ultra wire in 11lb 👍👍👍 it’s knottable so I make loops and tie direct to the loop with a blood knot. The coating protects the braid from the wire. If the coating comes off, change the trace 👍
I always remove a treble. Nightmare small jacks with 3 trebles in mouth. I use tungsten putty in the ring that the treble came out of. Can get to balance perfectly.
2000 size is fine for lakes. 👍 Yes a use some UV lures. They can be great in coloured water. But also non UV lures like solid white, black or Chartruese are great too
Yeah got a new Sony Vlogging camera. The auto focus goes a bit funny when I wave my arms about but in general it looks better than just using an iPhone!

Nice one Thom, those jerkbits look incredible
They are! I’ve had some very special fish on them 👌
great video, really struggled with catching on jerks so I've kind of ditched them. Time to give them another go

Have you done a video that includes how you tie the trace to the braid, i am sure seen it somewhere?

Hello ! First like! 😁
Winning!
How do you attach the trace to the braid without a swivel?
with the coated wire, I make a loop and then tie the flouro on to the loop using a blood knot
Thanks
