I'm brand new to Lightroom and stumbled across your channel the other day. The relaxed and naturally conversational manner in which these videos are delivered makes them incredibly watchable and so much easier than reading a PDF or manual, so I can't thank you enough for them. It's really giving me the chance to hit the ground running. Top Job :)

Anthony, great videos! Here is how I name everything:
Digital Photos > YYYY > YYYYMMDD as the folder structure. So on the import dialog I have the destination set to the current year folder and then I check the create subfolder box and type in YYYYMMDD and then set the date option to organize into single folder.
For file renaming I do YYYYMMDD Seq#. This system makes it super easy for me to find things!

Began in 2008 with LR3 and imported using [ year-month-date & shoot title ] I'm an event photographers, so this works very well 4 me. In 2014 I blew up my hard - drive ; as I was using my internal drive: knew nothing of external drives. However, I learned and studied external drives. - today I have 3 externals.

Very nice "excruciating details" Tony! I too struggle with destination on import and the best way to keep my images sorted upon import. The method I use now is to import all images into one folder I named "All My Photos" on an external drive. I am doing better with key wording so that really helps when I need to find certain images. I tried using folders but ended up with a gazillion of them all over the place so I quit importing like that. I'm still trying to figure out the best method that works for me.

  • @kevindickinson1541

Hi Anthony. Just catching up with this series. You did ask the question about other ways. I use a card reader and I have a folder for the current year I am in. That is 2019 as we speak. Next year 2020 & so on. My images initially import to that Folder. There maybe different dates and different shoots. But they will all be under 2019. I only use folders and have not used collections. So once they have imported I then decide which existing folder or a new folder they are to go in. I then drag them into that folder. Cull any images. And then I rename them to what I want and keyword them accordingly. Doing it this way means if I don't have much time, I just hit import & at least they are sitting there in LR waiting for me to organize them then or at a later stage. As I said I only use folders. For example if they are Model Shoots. I have a main folder called Model Shoots. Then sub folders for each year & then subfolders usually with the models name. I am not a professional or a prolific shooter. So that works for me.

I use the method for import that you mentioned at the end of the video. I have a 3TB external drive for images, and use Finder to create descriptive folders(and sub folders if needed) on the image drive. Then I copy the images from the more card to the folder. Open LR and drill down to the folder I and importing from. Add meta data then import. Works great for me. LOL i had grown weary of losing images. Now they are exactly where I placed them. Think I picked this up from a Matt K video. Thanks for all your videos!

Thanks again for a great tutorial. I always import photos to a folder that is titled by either the location or event. Over time, I've learned to create folders by year of places that I go to frequently. As an example, a nearby park is the Sandy Ridge Reservation (Lorain County OH metro park) so I have a "Sandy Ridge 2022" folder for this year's images. After watching this video, I will start using keywords which will really help in searching for images.

Thanks Anthony very informative. For importing I have found a system which works for me.
    1/ Firstly I rename the files using the date_by shoot_and sequence number eg Date (YYYYMMDD)_Custom Text_Sequence # (1)
2/ I then store the files in folders by date. In the format Year, subfolder month, subfolder date. eg (2018/2018-05/2018-05-16). Sounds complicated but works for me!!
3/ I save these choices in my Import User Preset and on import only have to add the custom name.
But I have to work hard to add useful keywords, still a job in progress.

Thank you for a detailed and methodological look at the import process. There’s a lot to take in. On the issue of where to locate files I have to say I don’t understand the idea relying on the file destination to find specific images. Isn’t that what the Library module is for? Maybe it’s because I come from the Aperture managed library world that I think this way. Also for me an import session is not necessarily a single “shoot”; it may include some family shots, some bird pictures from the backyard, a hike, etc. It doesn’t make sense for me to manage a whole bunch of destination folders AND also the collections. I manage the collections and let Lr manage the files.

I was using Sony Alpha 7 and Lumix. It sorts it by camera, first Lumix and then Sony. I want to sort them by capture time across. I used to sort them last year from 3 different cameras, it worked like magic. Is it me or Adobe?

Great video. I've been using LR for many years, but am still unfamiliar with some of the more advanced features, so I decided to watch your tutorials. So far, I've learned a few things, and you haven't even gotten to the meaty stuff. As to file/folder naming, I rename my files and my folders by date during the import process, and then in the Library view I rename the folder to append the occasion/location. For example, the files would be named 20180727-00x, and the folder would be 20180727 San Diego Zoo.

In it, you briefly mention that you used to copy all your photos from the camera SD card to a hard drive, and THEN import with Lightroom. However, now you import directly from the SD card. Can you explain why you changed the process. It would be very helpful to know the thought process behind it. Thanks.

Great video, but one question. When you add a photos to a Collection and then want to export to your hard drive, it would be great if it added just the new images, rather than create a whole new file thus more space on your hard drive. Do you physically remove the old file, or is there a way to do this on the already established file on your hard drive?

Please consider a video on optimizing Lightroom's settings, particularly those settings that affect speed. I originally imported directly from my cameras, and I was always disappointed with the time it took to copy/import images. I purchased a USB-3 card reader and saw a dramatic improvement; however, the latest update of Lightroom Classic killed off the speed increase. I'm sure it's some obscure setting that has changed to a slow default, but where is it? A video to cover such issues would be invaluable.

  • @arnau4394

Hi Anthony. I think. The best way to configure destination folder is to name folders by date and divide them when thy get bigger than 1Gb. Like…yyyymmdd-1, yyyymmdd-2, etc. Then in google calendar, o whatever IOS is, you add all the info in a event created for the day you did that shooting. Inside that event you can store all valuable info. When you want to look for that random picture, you just have to use the calendar search bar. That will lead you to the event and it’s date. This keeps simple your picture storage and let’s you create info in another place without putting your work at risk. Then you just have to export your calendar as a file from time to time to have a backup of it.

Thank you for the simply displayed tutorial, I am a new user of Lrc. I do organize my files by trip name and dates. For some reason I did buy several memory cards but with moderate capacity. As my main focus is underwater photography I always make sure that my memory card has available capacity for shots befor each dive. By this I do end up my trip with more than one memory card. My question is, once I created a new destination file through Lrc with the first memory card, can I always add on to the same file extra photos regardless of them having different dates (but all under the same trip)?

@@TiborcoCooking A few things you can try:
      1) Make sure you hold down the Alt key *FULLY* while you type all four numbers. *Do not* let go of Alt until after you have typed all four of the numbers.
      2) Make sure you are using the Num Pad *NOT* the numbers above the letters on your keyboard. The Num Pad is typically to the right of the Enter Key. It looks vaguely like a calculator layout. (You can find pictures of this online if it's still not clear what you should be looking for.)
      3) Make sure Num Lock is *ON* , on your keyboard (there should be a light or symbol somewhere that shows this. Try typing with the Num Pad. If nothing happens, hit the Num Lock button again, it should now be on.)
      4) It's possible your keyboard doesn't have a Num Pad, or something is wrong with it or the Num Lock key. See if it's blocked by debris maybe? If you don't have it, then I'm not sure what the work around would be. You could highlight, then copy and paste the symbol © I suppose.
      5) Some sort of software issue, where © cannot display properly on your computer. I'm not sure what the fix for this would be.
      Hope that helps. Good luck!

I am looking for suggestions on organization of photos imported from Canon camera where I have it set to write a RAW and a JPEG.

I seperate by year. In that year folder I have a subfolder called "trips, travel, and events" another for video, and last I have just one called pictures.
Any photoshoot, travel, camping trip, ski trip, etc goes in my trips, travels and events folder while all the random pics goes in the pictures subfolder.
I used to be alot more in depth with my folder structure but I found it too complicated and annoying searching for photos. As long as I can recall what year they were taken then it's easy to find.
We will see after I have a few more years added to though

Anthony, would you consider making a video on Lightroom importing for those who prefer to maintain an arm's length relationship with Lightroom?
Let me explain: I came to Lightroom after using the much simpler, ON1 PhotoRaw and Corel PaintShop Pro, in which, as you know, you don't have to "import" your photos in order to work on them, and then disappear into a mysterious catalogue system. You just locate them on your computer, work on them using ON1, and save them to a place on your computer that makes sense to you so you can easily find them. I started using LR because I appreciate the excellent quality of the photo processing tools, and their ease of use.
With Lightroom, I find it a mystery as to where my "imported" files actually go. I work around this by saving into the Quick folder, so that I can work on the file in the future. I have sometimes resorted to searching through "all photographs" in Lightroom also, which works, but is obviously tedious.
So I don't find Lightroom user friendly, and I don't want to get married to it. Therefore, when I import my photos, I never import the entire contents of an SD card into Lightroom. I review my photos on my computer or back of camera, make notes, and then import them into LR and process them one at a time. That way, I can better manage where they go. I remember to put them in the Quick folder so that I can find them again. And when I finish working on a file, I always export in TIFF format, so that I can easily find it and work on it in future, in case I accidentally shift the location of my file on my computer or alter the name of the folder it is in, in which case Lightroom will not be able to find it. Of course, with the TIFF, I won't be able to modify the Lightroom adjustments made, but at least I'll have a high quality file that includes the adjustments, and so I can take it from there. I save the RAW file for future reference too, of course.
So in summary, because of what I view as an complicated import and cataloging system, I prefer not to import my files en masse into LR. If some day they make a program that is as good as LR for processing photos, I will move on to it, and rejoice to have that processing quality along with the ability to store my files in a common sense fashion. Until then I will keep my TIFF and RAW files in places where I can find them, separate from Lightroom's baffling (to me) catalogue system.
Sorry for the long winded explanation. But I suspect there may be many like me. The bottom line, and my main question: might you some day make a video for people like me who only import photos one at a time into Lightroom, completely bypassing their catalogue system. I actually would like to understand the LR catalogue and how to import, one at a time, in a way that I easily find the files I worked, with the LR adjustments, later. I assume there must be a way! Thanks for considering it.
PS If you already have a video and you can recommend some portions of it that would clue me in in this way, great. But I tend to zone on out on most LR how-to videos because they go on at length on how you start by importing your hundreds of files into the LR ecosystem, which I don't want to do.

Hey Anthony, I'm interested in donating to get the free 12-page keyboard shortcuts but would like to know if its mostly geared towards Mac? I use windows and will be getting the Classic CC subscription service. (upgrading from Lightroom 5)

Anthony, thank you, only one thing needs a little correction. I've heard many times that development adjustments get written into a DNG file. But no, it doesn't have to be like that. Since I shoot many images with my little Ricoh GR, those images are DNG files. In the catalog settings, Metadata tab, you can specify if you want to write adjustments into the file header. Just tick off that checkbox, and everything gets written into the catalog file, even with DNG. These settings have been there at least since Lightroom 3. (still having a second PC with Win Vista and Lightroom 3.)
Advanced tip: if you create a Pano or HDR from DNG files within Lightroom, strangely LR behaves differently, so my setting recommendation above doesn't apply: some settings during the Pano / HDR processing get written into the DNG file (only once, during that process), the file date changes. To avoid that, just create virtual copies from the original DNGs and proceed with creating a Pano / HDR from these virtual copies. After creating the Pano / HDR you can delete the virtual copies.

if we check that box in that case the problem will be that when you open the same file in other Catalog, it will open with adjustment which you made before? I think so but let me know if you had different experience.

Anthony question on where to store my photos and library if I travel and use three different Macs? My plan is to install a 4TB internal in my 2019 iMac, I already have a 4TB in my 16" MacBook Pro and setting up a 4TB external for iCloud Drive only. I will use iCloud Drive for this because I do not know of another way to share and be able to use my photo library and images across three computers without carrying a external around and I am not going to do that. My images library is about 1TB so 4TB is enough for now. Is this the best way or what do yo suggest it seems like the easiest way as long as I religiously back this stuff up which I do to 10TB externals including an off site 10TB.
