  • A review of the HB and HB Lite Guitar Supports that use clamps.

    I was very excited and pleased when I was sent the HB Guitar Supports all the way from the Ukraine. I’ve been looking for a trustworthy support for performance using clamps instead of suction cups for a long time. I used to love my Murata but because the clamps are so wide they don’t work on my raised fingerboard guitar because the top slopes down. Luckily, both the HB Support and the HB Lite support work great since they attach lower on the instrument and the clamps are closer together.

    Hurray!! Someone finally got away without the suction cups... Interesting artefact. Good review. It is a good way to hold the guitar, it looks for more steady and reliable. Thanks for sharing.

    I just ordered the full size model because of this review. It seems to solve the suction cup issue. This is also better than the magnet solution because those neodymium magnets could attract any nearby metal objects, e.g., on my couch when I'm lazing around with the guitar. Your lessons are the best on the www!

    Thank you for this detailed video review! I actually ordered an HB Support because of this and can't wait for it to arrive. :)

    I just received and did a preliminary fit and test of the full size model. I like it very much so far. easy to adjust and stays in place really well. Seems well made. one does not have to tighten the clamps much at all for a secure fit.. a good choice I think.

    This looks brilliant. I just got my first support this week - an Ergoplay - and I was a little disheartened that it just didn’t feel secure enough. The clamps look like just what I need. I’m also interested in what you said about it suiting kids. I teach kids and if I can’t deal with suction cups, there’s no way they will! Thanks for the review.

      The GuitarLift feels most secure to me: www.thisisclassicalguitar.com/review-guitarlift-guitar-support-rest/ But I like the small profile of this one and it feels good. To tell the truth though I still use my Gitano the most for ease!

    Great review!
    Another benefit of the clamps is for guitars with an unfilled/porous/matt finish like mine, suction cups just don't work and I have to stick on adhesive strips to get them to stick, but they still don't stick great so this eliminates that!
    Sorry if someone in the comments has already mentioned this or if I missed it in the video.

      Yes, clamps are a good solution, there is also the Murata and Woodside clamping supports as well.

    Hi,
    Could you test the small HB to find out if it could be used for a traditional flamenco player with both feet on the floor and the lower bout resting on the right leg.

    Thanks, Bradford; I ordered one today. Would like to know what the piece was that you were playing when you demo'd the full-size HB...is the notation available on your site?

    Will they work with a thinline guitar? About 2.5 inches thick? I can't find anything out there that can work with that. Sadface..

    Hi Bradvord! Thank you very much for your videos and way of teaching. I have at home Ergoplay supports(one of them same , like show on this video) and I would like to try also HB suppot. I have some questions: 1.Would both version the work on the right leg? Can you verify, please ?2. Are this support slides on the leg?
    3.Are the weigth of HB support same like Ergoplay support, which you show or it is more heavy? Thank you in advance.

    • @Thisisclassicalguitar
      @Thisisclassicalguitar  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi,
      1. It would feel similar to your Ergoplay on the right leg.
      2. It's doesn't seem to slide much, but again, similar to the Ergoplay.
      3. It's a bit heavier than the Ergoplay but not by much, nothing to worry about.

    Hi Bradford, Thanks for your videos, very helpful, especially for someone who's starting late wit the classical guitar (I'm 57). I've been teaching myself for about a year now but I often am not sure how to structure my practice, I get confused due to all the material out there dedicated to self-study. I bought probably half of these books available in the market (methods, etudes, scales, technique, slurs, theory, easy classical guitar pieces and many more). I discovered your site and am glad I did because it gave me a sense of structure. I downloaded your free method 1, but I see that many of your videos are on your 20 favorite exercises and then I also see that you have Classical Guitar Technique: Essential Exercises, Scales, and Arpeggios available. And the confusion is starting again. should I just finish the method one only or combine it with any other book you have availableion your website? (or even combine it with any other material available out there e.g. Segovia's scales and studies, Giuliani's 120 studies, like I said before, I probably have it.) Sorry for the long comment. I'm serious about learning since now I have the time but need your guidance as to how to do it in the most productive and structured manner. Thanks a lot

      @Thisisclassicalguitar  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      After completing my Volume 1 method just proceed to Volume 2, that's it. After Volume 2 you can buy the Technique Book + Grade 1 but don't bother until after Vol.2. There is a technique section at the back of Vol.2 to keep your technique practice busy.

    Hello Bradford,
    I just received the HB Lite, and I have a question you might help answer.
    Even when I screw the support as hard as I can with my hands (not gonna get the wrench out are we), the bottom clamps will slip off the body at the mere weight of my left hand hanging from the neck. Pushing the leather strap up with a single finger will do the same.
    Did you experience that? Or... do you think I may put too much weight on the neck compared to what is proper form? It stays on when the guitar just rests on my lap. Also, didn’t have that problem with suction cup, they could take some weight alright.

    • @Thisisclassicalguitar
      @Thisisclassicalguitar  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, I didn't notice any slipping and I certainly didn't screw it on too tight as I'm cautious about that. Yes, it could be that you are pushing down a bit much, most students have some tension issues that they often redirect into the hold/pushing on the guitar.

    • @kaozium7878

      @@Thisisclassicalguitar Thank you for your observation! I’ve been trying to slightly shift the weight on the right forearm and I haven’t had any slip since. Hope this mini-thread can help others.

    If only they made something like this for electric guitars! I use a Dynarette with my Les Paul but still have to add a footstool at a low setting. Also tried something called Performaxe but It was uncomfortable and I couldn't get a high enough angle with it. The search continues...

    You said you used some adhesive strips to protect the French polish before applying the supporter, will the French polish be removed too if I remove the strip? Is it a must to use the strip on guitar ? If I don't use the strip, will mark be made on the guitar ?

    • @Thisisclassicalguitar
      @Thisisclassicalguitar  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The strip is non-adhesive. It won't remove your french polish. However, you will notice that where the strip was placed it will look 'fresher' since it was protected for awhile.

    Maybe something on how works with the wood vibration, sound of the guitar .. but just a luthier or a good test

    • @Thisisclassicalguitar
      @Thisisclassicalguitar  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because the edge of guitars are fairly heavily braced I think the wood is very free to vibrate...

    Vinyl Cling wrap eventually peels off, right? How long does it take for it to start peeling and you need to apply a new sheet ot it?

    I would not use that on French Polish especially in warm or most climates. The fire of my case even left marks on my finish that rubber grip would be a disaster.

    Really upset about this recommendation. The portable guitar rest is a terrible product. Don’t buy it. Not only does it not fit my guitar, not only does it slip off, it has damaged my guitar. I know everybody has to make a buck, but it’s clearly a product you don’t actually use or at least you now recommend others. Worse, this company links to this video from their sites - and I made the mistake of trusting the review. Really disappointed

    • @Thisisclassicalguitar
      @Thisisclassicalguitar  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sorry to hear that. Mine worked well as seen in the video. What type of guitar did you attach it to? Did you use it in the way I did in the video (as in, in the classical position)?
