This is my new 2018 Douglass Scott Classical Guitar. He did a wonderful job on the guitar. It has a clear, elegant, and focused sound and I love the feel of the smaller scale length and body of the instrument. I’ve tried out many of his guitars before and I believe them to be some of the best classical guitars out there. His guitars have a really great responsive ‘pop’ to the trebles all within a sweet and sustained sound. His unique fan brace design and the small body on this one is surprisingly loud and projects very clearly but without the over the top mid-range that some doubletops produce. I’ve tried many guitars lately from doubletops, to lattice, to traditional instruments but Scott guitars won me over! This will be my main instrument from now on and I’m very pleased with it. Since this is a small scale with a smaller body and other interesting features I thought I’d demo/review it for you. Maybe you just want to learn about new instruments or you’re interested in buying a Scott. Enjoy.

Rewatching this video, and just wow! Such strength behind the guitars tone; a muscular display of workmanship. The second you hit a string I felt the pop hit my face. Voluminous, focused, and clear in resonance making its presence known in gracious manner with expressive intensity and cutting attitude.
I can only imagine what this fine instrument sounds in real life.

You are absolutely correct about arm placement on a large bodied guitar. I'm retired now but I used to play both nylon and steel string acoustic guitars. I once owned a beloved Gibson J200 and a J100 but the size of the bodies put my right arm in unnatural position that affected my picking ability. I felt large bodied guitars were more appropriate for strumming than picking. Thanks for your videos.

You have a wonderful sounding and beautiful guitar.
I started out with a Jose Oribe 660 mm scale, then a Navarro 650 mm scale, DeCasia 650 mm scale, (all great sounding guitars) but my recently purchased $275 Córdoba Dolce 630 mm scale gives the the greatest playability and with a 1-1/2” oblong soundport that I drilled with a simple hole cut saw provides the best player sound! No need for a reflective room as the sound projects from the soundport to the player. I recommend soundports for a simple no nonsense auditory benefit for the player, totally “unmuffles” the sound.

Yes, it fits great. I'm quite short so I feel this is about time I had a slightly smaller instrument. I highly recommend it.
This is Classical Guitar I'm actually quite tall, so a 650 fits me well but the sound is great on your 632. This is the second great Canadian builder I've learned about recently.
I'm 5 foot tall with small hands and play a massive Ramirez 1a, 664mm scale length.. it sounds amazing, but is an absolute unit.

Congrats - it sounds great and very clear - not sure if reverb was added or not? But it sounds good! Thanks for sharing - I am in the process of moving to a smaller scale classical guitar myself. For more challenging pieces that are in first position a lot - for example Prelude, Fugue and Allegro I find capoing up one first makes it much easier on the fretting hand for me personally, which basically inspired me to look for a shorter-scale guitar. I am totally inexperienced when it comes to classical guitars. The thing that I wonder is that, for such an expensive guitar, I would have expected it to have a far lower string action. Is high string action the norm with classical guitars?
Sounds really nice on here anyway nice and clear defined notes even sound on all of the finger board good sing to it for a young guitar sounds great. With out hearing live it sounds up there with some of the best I have heard, I mean top quality guitars.

Oh wow! Even through camera, the difference between the Córdoba (c10?) and this classical is night and day. It defs sounds much louder, clearer, and Bell like. I will have to look into this luthier if my playing ever gets to this needed level of performance (not anytime soon lol). For now I am more than happy learning on my c10 that I got for 850 US dollars. Currently working on getting Villa Lobos etude one to 120 bpm, at 96bpm currently. Congrats on the wonderful classical guitar sounds great even through camera.
The C10 is pretty nice for practicing though, ya, I also got my C10 on discount which makes it such a great deal.
A beautiful instrument. Why did you choose a cedar over a spruce soundboard? I would have though that most top-flight performers choose spruce...apparently it opens out better over time. Also, I noticed that your new instrument doesn't seem to have quite the power (and projection) of your previous Dominelli....or is that down to its newness or perhaps the acoustics of the room?
I love spruce too, it would be great to have one of each! I like spruce guitars for solo playing but I sometimes feel self-conscious in ensembles even though I know they sometimes project more clearly. Cedars tend to have more body (total generalization and not always true). That said, I think builders are doing more with cedars than in the past ... all generalizations at best!

Not in the same league as yours obvs but I love him. Cedar and rosewood. Problem is I keep stopping playing just so I can look at him and give him a little stroke. 😊

Hi, many thanks for your very informative channel. By the way, have you tried instruments from luthiers from other parts of the world, i.e. Spain, Germany, South America, U.S., even Asia? If so, what is your opinion? And how do Canadian instruments compare with them? I am in Canada.
It always depends on the luthier. I've played great instruments from all around the world and horrible ones too. All it takes is the right luthier to make a great guitar, regardless of country.

I notice you use an arm rest, are they easily obtainable and what is the technical name for them? Does it stop your forearm from sticking to the guitar or is it just more comfortable than not using one?
I love the armrest. It's more comfortable AND does facilitate movement. I don't know how involved it would be to get one installed after the fact. There are some that attach with clamps I think but I haven't tried them.
On doubletop guitars the top in generally very, very thin, therefore the armrest is not just for comfort, but is actually required to prevent your arm from touching the top of the guitar as even the slightest touch can damp the sound
I use an armrest by Andreas Abel. It uses clamps and I´m really happy about it. It works on most classical and steelstring guitars, but you should double check the size of the guitar before ordering one.

I am short too, smaller and narrow hands, just wondering if reducing it to 640mm would be enough or maybe i should go for more like yours.
640 mm is really not a very noticeable difference to me. 630mm is great though.

I'd love to know more about that modernistic piece which starts at 14:36. I don't know much guitar music with that kind of conventionally dissonant harmonic language and I found that very lyrical.

Not sure about these days but his general price range used to start at around $7000 CAND and then go up as you add options such as raised fingerboards etc and/or choose woods.

Could you please tell us about the mic setup and interface you used? I've not had much success recording classical guitar.
UA Apollo Twin interface and two Audio-Technica AT4040 mics. Post production work is key though, a basic zoom h4 can do well is you work on the sound after (I use Logic Pro for software). Is that scale equivalent to a 650mm guitar capoed at the first fret?

I would say that would be a hair more but approximate. It's very hard to tell the difference in feel with this being a smaller body guitar as well and the way the spacing gets divided across the frets. Ya, a video on things to look for could be cool but depends on the price range so there are many variables.
I think the titanium trebles sound great! Did you switch them?

Haha, it's an old sock! Lots of players do this, especially in the summer months.
This sounds good and looks nice, but it also sounds like a lot of other luthier built guitars. Have to say - beyond some rare historical guitars and certain types that have unique color, perhaps too much is made of these guitars in terms of sound and playability. The luthiers learn from another and copy a lot, so in the end they kind of all blend together.

That is a sound portal. Make the sound louder for the player and anyone on stage. Some people say it makes the guitar louder to the audience (through multi-directional sound?) but I think it is so subtle as to make little difference. That said, I like it for chamber music or dead sounding rooms and the cover means I can plug it up if needed.

A subtle yet charming sound. Not as powerful as your Dominelli though but it seemed like you were playing it in a different way. I sometimes find that we play different guitars differently. Do you find that too?
Interesting! Did you say the string spacing at the nut is 42 mm? That sounds quite narrow. I have just ordered a La Cañada 115 with also a 'smaller' neck: 640 mm / 50 mm!

Regular fretboard. I don't think classical guitars do the radius thing. Or at least I haven't tried one.

Well, there are other brands but I haven't tried them all. I like Cordoba for the lower price range and I won't recommend the inbetween price range. I would buy something solid and then save up for something in the higher bracket. That said, lots of people are playing Hill Guitars and I've heard good things. I've also heard good things about Altamira guitars but again haven't tried them.

Hey, just wondering what the action is at the 12th fret on the bass E string?
Not sure, I had Douglass make me a few different saddles though so I can change it for softer solo playing or recording or loud chamber music.
How would you compare your new Scott to the Dominelli guitars you used before this one?
Both are great guitars and equally good but depends on what you want. This Scott is a small scale so it feels different and simply is different. In terms of sound I'd say the Scott might be a bit more defined of a sound with a bit more pop but the Dominelli had lots of body and depth to the sound and his newer doubletops have all the pop one would want. Dominelli can get a really big lovely sound full of rich, warmth when he wants. So it's a change but I would love to own another Dominelli in the future for variety, he's a great builder.

Scott guitars seem to go from around $7000-$8000 CAND but it all depends on the woods and options you choose. I imagine his price fluctuates depending on the Canadian dollar and demand. But only he can answer this, don't take my word for it.
So what size body is it exactly? a 7/8 Standard or smaller?
Good question, I'd say close to 7/8ths at least but I'm sure it differs slightly...
i prefer to buy vintage guitars compared to new guitars because the solid wood had been play-in and very goof quality with excellent resonance. how much is your new Scott classical guitar?
These guitars are custom ordered only and 100% built by Douglass Scott. His prices range depending on the options but I think they are generally between $7000-8000 CAND depending on woods etc. I'm sure prices vary though so give or take a lot
Looks like beautiful instrument. I'm intrigued by the way the strings are attached to the bridge. I've never seen that method before. Are there any benefits?
Yes, the strings contact the saddle (the white part on the bridge) without the string looping around and touching itself which can dampen the vibrations. Also, it's nice and clean to tie the strings.

Not sure on the bracing, I'm sure it is Douglass' own design that he has worked on for 15 years or so.
42 is a good bit smaller than 52, definitely more than negligible
