hey dude question for you! im finally getting a new 4runner, SO stoked....Finally pulling the trigger on a RTT, I spoke with a service advisor who ive gotten to know at my toyota about it/racks to support the tent etc - he has a fully rigged out 4runner and is super into camping too etc....He strongly advised me against the RTT saying, among other drawbacks, that it can damage the frame of the car??? He said he's seen RTT's cause doors to close funny over time etc...I never even considered that. Looks like you are running your tents on a 4runner also - I was going to get some heavy duty crossbars like the LFD minimalist overland rack....But would you argue that a full frame/platform on top (like yours) like the Yakima Locknload platform from REI or something would provide more support and decrease risk of damaging the car? Shit what do I do? Help!
Yeah actually sitting in it really changes it even more. It’s crazy how big the ikamper 2.0 is compared to the other one... hell compared to almost every tent I’ve been in really.
Yeah I like to think of them as somewhere between a pop up camper and a traditional ground tent. I think you get the best of both worlds. Easy to transport but not down in the mud.
Thanks for stopping by and checking out this video. If you are looking for info about the giveaway, please check the description. If you’re here for the tents and have more questions please ask me in a comment so that others with the same questions can find them. Thanks guys!
Yeah the uptop rack is by far my favorite. I don’t have a rack because my tent doesn’t need one but if I end up switching tents I’ll 100% go uptop for my rack.
I’d love to have both, but with me going with the 3/4 front runner rack for my 4Runner I’d have to go with the mini. Great video talking about the differences, and this giveaway is awesome.
Yeah I think the mini is definitely nice if you don’t have dogs sleeping with you. I think two people it’s perfectly fine. With a 3/4 rack I don’t actually think you’d HAVE to go with the mini if you wanted the other one. It might be aesthetically a little weird looking but I’m pretty sure it’s be fine. That being said though you could measure it out or just go with the mini. Nothing wrong with that.
I would love the lager RTT, but I got a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited and the hardtop can only take so much weight, plus the size of the roof and where the racks can go on the jeep. I already got a pair of racks that are like 15 lb and are a no drill option that will hold 150 lb, so the tent is about perfect ofr my Jeep JL. If I had something (like my old F-150) I'd get the larger one for sure. and mounted on top of the bed.
If you are looking for size but the weight being a bit better the ikamper xcover is 150lbs. I mean I guess that would technically put you 15 lbs over but it’s pretty close lol.
Awesome video - as usual... I have the Yakama soft top RTT... I have been looking to get the IKamper Mini... it’s just me so don’t need the bigger one... keep up the good work...
Yeah for a single person the ikamper mini would be just fine. I’m not sponsored by them or anything so I can tell you that desert armor has almost the exact same tent for less. It’s called the Warrior Roof Top Tent and it’s $2800.
The ARB is nice as well, but I get the pains of the soft shell life. I did it for a while before I switched to hardshell. The 2.0 is really nice. May make the switch one day.
I sat in both models before buying, and I have to say for me bigger is better. Forget the 4 person idea (unless there little people) the 2.0 is perfect for two adults. And I even love the space when I’m by myself. I modified mine a bit, got rid of the iKamper mats. Replaced it with stick down carpet. This way I can close the top with all my bedding, air mattress deflated. Sleeping on Nemo Jazz 30” wide sleeping bag that attaches to a 30” air mattress. Electric blankets when needed. I have an overhead hoist, so I can install and remove the iKamper single handed. Love the iKamper.
That’s some great info there. I may have just bought an ikamper and swapping out my GFC for it. I’ll have to come back and visit this comment when I start asking adjustments to it. First on the list is the carpet. Does the Nemo Jazz close up in there with the air mattress? You keep it in there with the mattress that came with it?
By permanently removing the iKamper mattress it gives you much more room, when closing the top she’ll. So I close the shell with two sleeping bags, blankets, and air mattresses. The air mattress must be deflated. All bedding must be placed on the far end, opposite of the door. There are other links on modifying your RTT.
i own a mini cooper, a mini countryman and an audi.... really wish i could go with the bigger size but the mini is going to work great. expensive but i want the map print and the hard top, the accessories available for the ikampers are awesome as well
Yeah I mean you could try to make the larger one work but I doubt it would be road legal ha. I think the mini will work great. They also are releasing the ikamper 3.0 in may if you want to wait. They have it up on their site.
Yeah I think if I didn’t live where it snows a lot and needed big sleeping bags in the winter and jackets and all that inside I think the mini would be just fine. It’s about the same size as my gofast camper. My girlfriend and I are pretty snug in the winter with all of our stuff.
@@OXFOOT we have camped inland in 45 Celsius heat, as well as high winds & rain and we were very comfortable!! We haven’t tried cold weather yet so maybe if Covid lifts we’ll try next winter!! Fingers crossed! 😁😁😁
At the beginning of the larger ikamper section it shows Glenn carrying the dog up. You can either carry the dog up like that or you can look into the desert armor dog rami they have. Both are great options for getting the dog in the rooftop tent.
Yeah. You do a test with the hatch before you lock down the tent mounts. So before they tighten down the mounts, open the hatch all the way and make sure the hatch itself isn’t hitting. But the ladder doesn’t affect the hatch hitting, that little spoiler thing hits before anything else would.
a question.or two....do you guy's find the part that 'unfolds'...does the platform tend to 'Rattle' during med. to high winds?......also..with the added insulation carpet you purchased does that just 'stick on' to the metal?..any Mold developing ...in time?... Cheers from Canada!
So I just filmed their tents but I’ve not heard of any that from either of them about any rattling. I have a friend who owns one that had rattling when closed offroading but it was of the tent against the rack so it could have been a rack issue. The carpet he’s referring to in the video is sticky on one side. I believe it’s made for like outdoor applications. So basically it just sticks to the base of the tent. Essentially you could get the same effect from condensation mitigation by putting the carpet on the top part or the tent inside.
If you like the mini and you want to save some money desert armour has one very similar for cheaper. If you like the bigger one roof nest has a similar model as well. There’s a lot of good tents out there.
If Position properly, the shell would be to the wind the stairs downwind however if this is not possible iKamper recommends that during high winds that you tie down the stairs with a rope and steak so the fold out platform doesn’t lift. Also if no rain is expected by removing the rain fly will reduce much noise in Highwinds. With that said when the wind gusts 40 to 60 you’re gonna hear some noise.
I know I’ve seen 2 door jeeps with the ikamper mini but as far as the gobi rack I’m not really sure. The gobi rack for the 4Runner is super narrow and awkward but my buddy has the gobi rack on his 4 door and I really like it. You could check the measurements and see if it fits the rack.
@@OXFOOT Thanks Jason, I’ll do that. It would be really nice to have a RTT, and after looking at many of them, I’ve really fallen in love with the mini. It seems much smaller than most, which is good for me.
I’m currently trying to choose between the two. Was goi for the mini so I can store the Maxtrax. We now have a dog so may have to go with the 2.0. Do you think the mini would fit two adults and a medium sized dog?
I think it would be a pretty tight fit. Depending on what rack you have you might be able to still mount the maxtrax up there. They make side mounting maxtrax mounts for a lot of racks and you can sometimes retro fit another companies mount to your own if your rack company doesn’t make one. It’s probably worth looking into depending on what rack you have.

Loved this comparison. You got my attention when you mentioned king size mattress! Also, Glen + Alana are goals on so many levels!
Yeah I think the huge inside is a major selling point for me. I think we’ve outgrown the pop straight up maybe?
Great video comparing the two. The mattress size gave a great visual.
