I have a story from when I was a teenager. We were pier fishing in Panama City FL on pier park for king mackerel. So there was a tourist standing next to me, he had a beer in one hand and his rented rod & reel he got from the tackle shop at the front of the pier. We were just having a conversation, his buddy asked him if he set his drag, guy replied back I haven’t touched it yet. Next thing you know his rod is out of his hand and flying into the water. Looks at me then his buddy and says what the fuck just happened? He’s buddy said your paying for it and you should have set your drag lol.

I can 100% relate I was fishing with 40 lb braid with a shark rig fishing a dead croaker with a penn battle 2. 6000. Man when that thing bit on it was awesome it took a 200 yard run the first time and about spooled me when I got it in it was 5 foot 4 and 150 pounds off of a nc pier

Took my niece on the prowl for some bull reds.
I wanted her to have the best chance and landing one, so she was using my prized, tried and true, best rod I ever had.
She and I started talking as we were drifting across the bay and BOOM....massive strike.
Jerked the rod out of her hands in a millisecond.

Some information I missed that’s relevant to the video:
Reel drag systems are governed by the torque equation (torque equals force times radius) In the case of reels, the radius is actually the distance from the center of the spool to where the line exits.
This explains why the more line there is on the spool, the less drag you exert. All else being equal, if the diameter of the line on the spool reduced to half, then the line tension would double. This is a big factor on bigger fishing gear such as 50W, 80W, etc.

I have been surf fishing on the treasure coast for about 15 years and have caught most species using 15 lb mono 20 - 30 lb leader a few Jack's up to 23 lbs I use a loose drag I'm out for the battle only " I don't eat fish " now I decided to switch over to Indian river wad fishing due to the high east winds and surf dirty water in the winter months coming our way .
So I have reduced my spinning gear to a 2500 series and 10 lb mono with a 20 lb leader remember it's the battle that counts the gear might sound light to some but by using a light drag and smaller lures it will produce more hookups and fun and it should handle fish up to the 30 lb range if things go good.
Thank you for your service USMC 1958 - 1962

I built the feel and technique into my muscle memory as a kid fighting fish long than I had to. ANybody else? It was just for fun but now I reccomend any new angler, especially kids, spend time hooking bluegill, crappie, or any other small fish with a warrior spirit on an ultralight rig and 2-4lb test and extending the fight and learning rod tip osition, drag adjustment, and even some spool braking and reverse even if you could crank the thing in so fast it water ski's across the surface. After a childhood of getting the most play outta every fish (without torturing them), I can't tell u if or how or when I dod what and how many times after I've landed one to be proud of because my head was just in the game. That's only because I practiced with fish and spots that I had constant access to. Without a trust fund learning it on a boat with big fish would take a lifetime. Now I can help a buddy and (if welcome) stnad by and quietly adjust their drag and drop small tips if I see they're gonna break one off. Only do this with permission tho, don't wanna be the arrogant guy that get's blamed for the loss.

It's really cool that drag strength increases as the spool diameter decreases. Most people mistakenly increase drag as the fish pulls out line, big mistake.

I love this video. One important thing you left out was at what pound
would the hook you're using straighten out? I use 1/0 Owner
Mosquito thin-wire octopus hooks when I am using live anchovies. These hooks would
start to straighten out at around 7 lbs. I tested this myself using a scale and a bucket of water. Set your drag accordingly to not just the line, but the hook as well. Great point about the extra resistance on the line in the water when the reel is peeling. I never thought about that.

i'll also say this, you've got a van staal in your thumbnail, and we need to talk about line lay. your drag will not pull evenly when the spool is getting dunked and there is wind and the line lay is van staal level which isnt' great. soft spots in your spool will allow the line to dig in and increase the amount of tension you need to pull drag. your line may get stuck if it is really bad. my suggestion is to end every day with a long cast and bring the plug in under steady pressure. if you're bouncing a pencil popper in teh wind all morning your spool will be very uneven. one cast at the end of the day works wonders to keep ahead of it getting super rough or losing an optimal shape. your saragosa will have a smoother drag range, and your stella even better. your older staals will get a parabolic looking line lay and the line will resist diving into the inevitably looser spool, but that parabolic shape also alters somewhat the pressure on your drag and will cause the rod tip to bump a little as the line works over the parabola and the inconsistent line.
we also need to think about species. you let an albie run. you put the brakes on a big striper. you have to. he will get you into the rocks. some of those fish are older than your younger viewers. they are not dumb. make sure your tackle is up to snuff, the plugs you're using have good wires, and you're regularly matching your hooks and splits to your target species and size and current and wave states. you can cup the spool, you can change your rod angle, and you will have to touch your drag from time to time. modern reels and boat reels like stellas have a very wide range. you can make a little tweak. surf reels are again lacking in this department. it's ok when the drag washers are brand new after a service, but down the road you'll get very little drag or damn near locked without a ton of play in between, and at that point i suggest cupping your spool if you need drag.

I am a new subscriber to your channel and must say I really like the content. I can relate to what you are saying about Okinawa, I was stationed out there back in 2002-2004 and it was Awesome!!! I never really did any surf fishing there (I really wish I did) I was actually really big into freediving and spearfishing, especially with the amount of marine wildlife there is out there. Now that I am a bit older and can't really do what I was able to when I was younger, I've reverted back to when I was a kid and started surf casting and plugging again, and its' been great. The reviews and advice that you provide in your videos have definitely been useful, I look forward to your next video! Semper Fi!!!!

Hey mate I can answer I caught a 3m bullshark on a tld 30 with 30lb braid 90lb wire anyways it got me to the backing had strike set at about 6kg so yeh locked it up to full. Its the only reason I turned that shark and got it in. If I didnt do that I would have been spooled. So I dont get when people say dont go to max drag. Sometimes you just have too.

Unless your fishing in the flats and the stiper have no where it run and those big fat cows run straight to the rocks with the biggest barnacles - tighten your drag if your line can handle it. Fish of my life - braid cut above leader in the rocks.

  • @southernstyleflies5956

The hardest thing is fly fishing for redfish directly under docks to where you don’t let the there be any drag and you don’t let the line get back on the reel so you apply almost 100% drag with your hand and hope the fish isn’t too big which a lot of times isn’t the case. I lost 2 fish last time I was out because I could not turn their head even with all the resistance and then they went back into the dock and broke me off.

    • @comeatmebro3229
      @comeatmebro3229 5 ปีที่แล้ว

even with GT your drag cant just be locked, its needs to be able to pull line but not enough to reef you.
Hand on spool if you need extra pressure on the fish.

caught a 6 foot european catfish on 20lb fluoro leader with a finger sized chub(fish, not what ya americans think ) and 30lb braid as mainline while tryin' to get bigger baits for the catfish, my big cat didn't care and took the small bait, ran 150-200yds at the first run, troughtwroo big sunken trees and literally stopped when I had only about five wraps left, than I went into the water, dived down with my rod, somehow got it out of the first tree(was stuck on several spots) than further downstream another tree, same ting, then I went where I had the water to my waist, it'd go like this: the fish would make small runs, than I'd slowly gain a few yards, then he'd run again and so on, I couldne't tighten cause of the light leader and small hooks, yet I was at the risk of loosin' the fish since I couldn't go further downstream or I'd be cut off from the camp, so I just did the best I could and somehow it all worked out and after a few last rounds after I had it the first time close enought to touch I got a hold of that fish(you grap them in the mouth, gives ya some scratches but so what), then brought it upstream to my basecamp, made som pics and a release video, swam off unharmed.
I had used heavier line as backing that day, never did it again, now I always fill up my reels as much as i can, it's worth the few extra bucks!
